Abstract:
AbstractStudy aim: Assessment of postural stability performed on an unstable stabilometry platform. Comparison of the results ob­tained by two groups consisting of elderly (OW) (60+ years old) and younger women (YW).Material and methods: Seventy-three female volunteers were divided into two groups: 40 young women (20.2 ± 1.75), and 32 elderly women (68.3 ± 7.43). Participants performed five stability tests on Biodex Balance System SD: three 20-second tries, the Postural Stability Test (PST) and the Fall Risk Test (FRT). Three stability indexes - overall (OSI), anterior-posterior (APSI), and medial-lateral (MLSI) - both with eyes open (EO) and closed (EC) were analyzed. The impact of vision on balance was calculated as EC-EO. Also effect size was calculated and evaluated.Results: All of the parameters differed significantly between groups in favour of YW. The largest difference in significance as well as effect size was noted for FRT, p < 0.001 and 1.86 respectively. Tries measure the impact of vision on balance (EC-EO). The results concerning tries with EC-EO showed the strongest discrimination between groups - OSI p = 0.0088 (relative differ­ence 0.23 ± 0.26) and APSI p = 0.0268 (relative difference 0.17 ± 0.2). YW had a significantly better outcome.Conclusions: YW had better results in all of the parameters taken into consideration, with most of them being significant. This confirms that all of the regressive changes appearing with age influence balance. Lack of visual input (EC) in OW caused sig­nificantly worse results in most of the measured parameters, showing that vision is a very important factor for balance mainte­nance in the elderly.

Abstract:
Context: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) often presents with a dysfunction in deep abdominal muscles activity during standing tasks. Although some studies indicated that deep abdominal muscle activity improved during some functional tasks following stabilization exercise (SE), there is no study to evaluate the effect of SE on lateral abdominal muscles thickness during standing postural tasks. Objective: The purpose of this study was (1) to evaluate the lateral abdominal muscles thickness in the participants with CLBP while standing on a balance board and (2) to compare the effects of SE and a general exercise (GE) program on the lateral muscles thickness changes. Methods: This was a between-groups, triple-blinded randomized controlled trial design. In total, 40 females with CLBP were randomly assigned into 2 groups: GE (control group) and supervised progressive SE (experimental group). Diagnostic ultrasound imaging was used before and after the intervention to measure lateral abdominal muscles thickness during standing on 2 different levels of platform in the Biodex Balance System. Visual analog scale and Roland–Morris Disability Questionnaire were used to evaluate changes in pain intensity and disability. Results: The results indicated significant increases in transverse abdominis muscle thickness during all standing tasks (P = .02) and significant decreases in pain intensity and disability following SE intervention (P < .001). However, the lateral abdominal muscle thicknesses were not changed after GE intervention while standing postural tasks (P > .05). The GE group revealed only significant decreases in pain intensity after intervention (P = .03). Conclusion: Supervised progressive SE improved the activity of deep abdominal muscles in standing postural tasks in the patients with CLBP.

Stability plays a key role in the sport competition in football. Synchronized operation stabilization of the lower limb and trunk of the support with the dynamic movement of the contralateral limbs allow you to perform tasks specific to the discipline, eg. variety kicking of the ball. Purpose. The aim of the study was to evaluate differences in the capabilities to maintain postural stability in standing on one leg dominant and non-dominant leg with professional players including grouping variables: age, height, weight, volume of training aimed at improving the stability and general internship of football player career. Although commonly assumed that the non-dominant leg is predisposed to act more effective support for the body, the work to date have failed to identify indicated differentiation. It should be noted, however, that they were carried out on small trials in people less active, or among amateur athletes. Basic procedures. The study involved 31 professional soccer players from 1 to 5 level of division. In order to assess postural stability, each of the test performed three times a standard stability test consisting of three 20-second attempt to maintain balance on one leg becoming dominant and non-dominant leg on stabilometric platform BIODEX Balance System. For each of the lower limbs test was repeated three times. Assessment were average angular range deflections platform in the two reference planes, and the volatility of these deflections. These parameters were treated as a measure of postural stability of the respondents. Main findings. In the whole group of patients, no statistically significant differences in the possibilities to maintain postural stability in standing on one leg dominant and non-dominant leg. No significant differences were also detected when considering grouping variables. Conclusions. The results do not indicate a significant difference in the ability to maintain postural stability in standing on one leg dominant and non-dominant leg in professional soccer players.

Abstract:
Background. Ankle sprains can lead to functional deficits. However, few papers have investigated deficits following a single lateral ankle sprain as either assessed subjectively by the patient (e.g., with questionnaires) or measured objectively (e.g., by evaluation of postural stability). This paper aims to provide subjective and objective assessment of functional status in athletes after a single lateral ankle sprain. Material and methods. A lateral ankle sprain group (LAS) consisted of 20 athletes after a single lateral ankle sprain (mean age 23 ± 1.78 years). A control group (CTRL) comprised 20 athletes with no history of injury (mean age 22.5 ± 2.67 years). Subjective assessment was based on the Foot and Ankle Disability Index questionnaire (FADI-Q). A Biodex Balance System SD dynamic platform was used to assess postural stability. Static and dynamic testing was performed in single-leg stance. Results. Statistically significant differences were noted during the comparison of the LAS and CTRL groups in FADI-Q in the following parts: FADI (p=0,017) and FADI TOTAL (p=0,049). Moreover, statistically significant differences were noted in the LAS group between subjects with instability (N-STAB) and without instability (STAB) of the ankle in the parts FADI (p=0,006), FADI SPORT (p=0,011) and FADI TOTAL (p=0,002). During static and dynamic postural stability testing, no significant differences were found between sprained and healthy limbs, between the LAS and CTRL groups, or between the STAB and N-STAB groups. Conclusions. 1. A deterioration of subjective functional status after a single lateral ankle sprain was revealed. 2. A single ankle sprain is associated with a high risk of developing functional instability. 3. There were no differences in objective functional status between the groups.

Abstract:
Introduction: Epilepsy is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system. According to the World Health Organization, it accounts for 1% of the global burden of disease worldwide. Pharmacotherapy remains the primary therapeutic tool in this disease. However, more and more emphasis is placed on approaching this group of patients in an interdisciplinary manner, taking their various needs into account: social, professional, economic or psychological. Attention is also paid to the positive impact of physical activity on the quality of life of patients with epilepsy. The patients with diagnosed epilepsy often complain of a feeling of instability not reflected in standard neurological examination. Early detection of postural control disorders is possible using an objective research tool which is the modified CTSIB test (Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction and Balance). Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to assess the influence of targeted physical therapy on the quality of life among patients with diagnosed epilepsy of unknown etiology using the SF-36 quality of life questionnaire. Materials and methods: The study included 11 professionally active adults with diagnosed generalized epilepsy of unknown etiology, treated at the Department or Outpatient Clinic of Neurology at John Paul II Specialist Hospital in Kraków. Finally, out of the 11 recruited patients (5 women and 6 men), 1 patient was excluded from the study due to a history of craniocerebral trauma. Patients were examined 3 times every month using EEG and the SF-36 quality of life questionnaire. Additionally, between the 2nd and the 3rd month of the pilot study, the study group underwent physical therapy focused on balance disorders using the Biodex SD stabilometric platform. Results: Overall, the quality of life index measured using the SF-36 quality of life questionnaire in the study group improved after the completion of targeted physical therapy. Conclusions: 1. Generalized epilepsy of unknown etiology results in a significant deterioration in the quality of life of patients, which may also be accompanied by disorders of postural control. 2 A targeted program of physiotherapy in the treatment of patients with generalized epilepsy of unknown etiology may has a positive effect on their quality of life. null
