Abstract:
Kata-kata Kunci: Daya ilusif-persuasif, keindahan, akal, intelek, seni. Abstract: The majority of Plato’s reader interprets his philosophy in dualistic perspective, that there is the intelligible world (kosmos noetos) which opposed to the sensible world (kosmos aisthetos). This perspective caused many contradictions. In Aesthetics, E.H. Gombrich, an art historian who creates the Greek Revolution Theory, also read Plato under the perspective of dualism. For him, Plato thought that the contemplation of beauty can lead to the realm of transcendent ideas, while art can only flatter, deceive the senses and seduce the mind to feed on phantoms. Meanwhile, Gombrich also thought that Greek Art is beautiful precisely because of the power of illusion-persuasion. This article aims to reconcile the contradiction by replacing the intelligible world - sensible world to the intelligible realm - visible realm (topos noetos - horatos topos), the original term which Plato used in his corpus. And it concludes that Plato did not oppose the power of illusion-persuasion in art but placing them as an instrument to realize Agathon. Keywords: Illusion-persuasion, beauty, mind, intellect, art.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Plato opposed εἰκὼςμῦθος and εἰκὼςλόγος, thereby asserting the logos as the highest type of account, which revealed the strict rationality and intelligibility of the cosmos. Plato used the logos to affirm a new way of life in accordance with the intelligibility of the kalos cosmos and its copies (εἰκών) created by Theos. For Plato, therefore, dialogue as an exercise was more important than the results obtained, and for Aristotle, the discussion of problems had more educational value than their solution. Plato and Aristotle perceived the logos in the meanings of dialogue as the art of living by the highest account. They considered the logos as an opportunity to make a transition, or rather, self-transformation to the highest order, into which the idea of agathos was opened. The author argues the thesis put forward referring to the original texts of Plato. Abstract:
Kata-kata Kunci: Hipostasis, idea, Intelek, Jiwa, topos noētos - topos horatos, Yang Esa. Abstract: Is the popular truism in the philosophy of Plato, kosmos noētos - kosmos aisthētos (the intelligible world - the visible/sensible world), really authentic or an anachronism? This article aims to prove that this truism is incorrect. For this argument, the author will attempt to identify the genesis and historical dynamics with respect to an anachronism, namely, that the kosmos noētos - kosmos aisthētos was not derived from the philosophy of Platon but rather innovative creation of Philon of Alexandria and Plotinos in order to justify their philosophy. Thus, though the interpretation of Philon and especially that of Plotinos has dominated the interpretation of Plato’s philosophy in almost all studies of Platonism, this way of thinking is not identical with the philosophy of Plato that puts topos noētos - horatos topos (the intelligible region - the visible region) in connection with a single kosmos in order to realize the paideia according to the Good. Keywords: hypostasis, idea, Intellect, Soul, topos noētos - topos horatos, the One.

Abstract:
The characterization of the poetic act as a state of irrationality and ecstasis does not, as Plato pretends (followed by many interpreters until today), correspond to the oldest ancient Greek tradition – allegedly documented by the earlier poets as well –, but is Plato’s invention. As part of this invention Plato identifies for the first time in history poetical inspiration with divine possession. Plato’s subversive invention of the mad poet is the basis for his model of the philosopher who himself shall dispose of enthusiasm, as the poet does, but who shall moreover dispose of intellectuality.

Abstract:
The popular question why Plato wrote dramatic dialogues, which is motivated by a just fascination and perplexity for contemporary scholars about the unique form of the Platonic texts, is confused and anachronistic; for it judges the Platonic texts qua philosophical texts in terms of post–Platonic texts not written in dramatic dialogic form. In comparison with these, the form of Platos early aporetic dialogues is highly unusual. Yet, in its contemporary milieu, the form of Platonic literature is relatively normal. Dramatic dialogue was the most popular form of Attic literature in the late fifth and fourth centuries. This explains why Plato wrote dramatic dialogues.

Abstract:

Thesis, Paris 1, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA010529/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This work proposes to examine the tragic vision of the Greeks, going back to its origins, i.e. Homer, in order to see how it is maintained, intensifies, and even finds itself abandoned (in Aeschyluses work or in Sophocleses one). Then we'II see how this vision was completely defeated by Plato's soteriological theology. The tragic vision is a religious vision, structured by the hierarchy of the Fates -Those of the gods, heroes, living men, and the inhabitants of Hades. Between the race of gods and that of humans there is an abyss: the gods are not mortal and humans are not immortal. The constant meddling of the gods in the affairs of humans most often results in suffering, unhappiness, and death. The world after death is a place where souls reside, that of shadows, unconscious of their own existence and the existence of others. At the heart of this vision, man is not fee and does not choose; he is not responsible for his acts and does not deserve what he undergoes. If one suppresses one of these four fundamental beliefs, or if one assists in a decision 111ade by a good, fair, or compassionate god, one cannot speak of tragic vision. Therefore, this work focuses essentially on the texts where it is expressed in all of its purity: Homer (The Iliad), Aeschylus (The Persians), and Sophocles (The Trachiniae, Ajax, Antigone, and Oedipus the King). Particular attention is given to the words that translate it. But a different vision opposes from the Odyssey and Oresteia, an anti-tragic vision which finds its form completed in the religion of Plato. The last part of this work strives to bring out the principal points. Plato assesses that there exists in man an element of divine and immortal nature, hence the substitution of a theology of deliverance and the assimilation to the divine with a theology of separation. The sage replaces the hero, it is no longer the glorious death that is a “beautiful death" and which must be chanted, it is that of Socrates, the servant of Apollo. According to this philosophico-religious thought, man is fee, he makes choices, and he is responsible, and thus deserves from this time forward the punishments and rewards that are in store for him. Furthermore, Platonic theology is fundamentally a theodicy: the gods can only be good, the origin of evil resides in the two souls of the World: the good and the bad. The message of tragic theology is the resignation to the mystery. Plato takes on as a divine mission moving the soul towards salvation, and with this anti-tragic, he creates a different link between the gods, the sages, men, destiny, the afterlife and the psyche

Scrofani, Francesca. Thesis, Paris, EHESS, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017EHES0101.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes ps.-platonic Minos, a short dialogue transmitted within the Corpus Platonicum, whose authenticity has been questioned since the 19th century. Minos is centered on the definition of “law” and praises the mythical figure of Minos as a king and a lawmaker. This study replaces the dialogue in its historical context and argues for its philosophical and argumentative coherence. It covers three main points. First, a semantic study of the modes of argumentation used in Minos shows the important role played by etymology as an argumentative method. Second, the study of the three definitions of law provided by the dialogue allows for a comparison between Minos, Republic, Statesman, and Laws. Finally, the study of king Minos’ praise points to the 4th century BC and to the Ancient Academy as the historical context for the production of this text. Therefore, Minos can be considered as one of the first exegeses of Plato’s political dialogues produced within the Academy

Full text
Abstract:
This work seeks to analyze certain aspects of Plato’s dialectical methodology. It especially aims at understanding the modus operandi of the hypothetical reasoning (as it was implemented in the Meno, the Phaedo, books VI and VII of the Republic and the second part of Parmenides) on the one hand, and the method of collection and division (as it was applied in Phaedrus, Sophist and the Statesman). It also highlighted the tight link and complementariness these two methods allow with regards the pursued end and the research orientation taken. Indeed, the reflection about the dialectical processes of research is at the heart of Plato’s epistemological enterprise, especially from the middle-period dialogues. His questioning was based on the meta-scientific debate around the foundations (ἀρχαί) and then took Hippocrates’s medicine as a successful model of rational intelligibility applied to the empirical world. The world of plurality and of the many accounts for the orientation and the new objects of the dialectics used in the later dialogues. To this end, the concept of τέχνη appears to be the most relevant theoretical tool to restore the complexity of the Platonician dialectical endeavor. The theory of knowledge, to which dialectics lead, is essentially characterized by the refusal of any axiomatic deductive element, and the use of noetic insight. This is how the Platonician ἐπιστήμη departs from the Aristotelian scientific method

Abstract:
Unlike Martin Heidegger, who was always critical of Plato’s role in the history of philosophy, and Jan Patočka, who was more charitable but still had serious misgivings about Plato, Edmund Husserl saw Plato truly positively. However, his view resulted from the fact that he had simplified Plato’s theory substantially and adapted it to his own view of philosophy. According to Husserl, Plato was an inspirational figure as a founder of philosophical ‘theory of science’, and because he sought abstract knowledge of the Forms, he could serve as a useful contrast to the one-sided philosophy of modern empiricism. This paper attempts to present Husserl’s position in a greater detail and assess it.

Full text
Abstract:
Treated herein is the elastic buckling of circular plates based on the Reddy plate theory. This plate theroy extends the Kirchhoff (or the classical thin) plate theory to allow for the effect of transverse shear deformation. Unlike the Mindlin’s shear deformation plate theory, there is no need for a shear correction factor in the Reddy plate theory. In this paper, exact buckling solutions are derived for circular plates whose edges are simply supported and elastically restrained against rotation as well. This general edge condition includes the classical simply supported and clamped edges at the limiting, values of the elastic rotational restraint constant. The buckling solutions are expressed in terms of the well-known Kichhoff buckling solutions. A comparison of buckling loads between the Mindlin, Reddy and three-dimensional elasticity plates is also given.
