“Caint na ndaoine”. The Irish Language as a Precedent for StandardisationCritics of the standardisation of the Irish language argue that the “modernisation” of the Irish orthography has been detrimental to the preservation of the various dialects that form native spoken Irish. The effects of standardisation on Irish consequently form an important precedent for language standardisation. The potential alienation of a language’s native speakers is an outcome of standardisation that is obviously destructive for a language community that exists in a minority. The issues that surround the movement for a standardised Plattdeutsch are similar to those faced in the standardisation of Modern Irish. Since the recognition by the European Union of Low German (Plattdeutsch) as a regional language in 1998, there has been newfound momentum in the movement for its reestablishment as a unified language of Northern Germany. One of the great difficulties of this movement however is the lack of any universal orthography due to the separate nature of the language’s dialects. Given the sociolinguistic similarities of these two (albeit unrelated languages), a study of the effects of the standardisation of Irish is useful for an assessment of the possibility of a standardised Plattdeutsch. “Caint na ndaoine”. Język irlandzki jako precedens standaryzacjiKrytycy procesu standaryzacji języka irlandzkiego uważają, że „modernizacja” irlandzkiej ortografii zaszkodziła ochronie wielu dialektów składających się na oralny język natywnych Irlandczyków. Skutki standaryzacji irlandzkiego stanowią więc ważny precedens standaryzacji języków. Możliwe wyobcowanie natywnych użytkowników języka jest w oczywisty sposób destrukcyjnym dla trwania wspólnoty mniejszościowej rezultatem procesu standaryzacji. Zagadnienia towarzyszące ruchowi na rzecz standaryzacji języka dolnoniemieckiego są podobne do problemów standaryzacji, wobec których stanął współczesny irlandzki. Uznanie przez Unię Europejską dolnoniemieckiego (Plattdeutsch) jako języka regionalnego w 1998 dało nową siłę ruchowi na rzecz ustanowienia go ujednoliconym językiem północnych Niemiec. Jedną z wielkich trudności tego procesu jest brak uniwersalnej ortografii, co wynika z różnorodności dialektów tego języka. Zważywszy na socjolingwistyczne podobieństwo tych dwóch (niespokrewnionych ze sobą) języków, studium efektów standaryzacji języka irlandzkiego jest użyteczne dla oceny możliwości standaryzacji dolnoniemieckiego.

This article based on the research of specific scientist who studied and still working on language issues and dialects. The article explores the consonants of the Low German (Plattdeutsch) dialect of the Germans of Kyrgyzstan, in comparison of consonants of the literary Germans language. The main difference in the field of consjnants in the Low German dialect and the literary German language is the absence / presence pf the second movement of consonants: holt — “Holz”, tid — “Zeit”, twentech — “zwanzig”, twei — “zwei”; assimilation according to the signs of voicelessness / voiced consonants: bliwe — “bleiben”, jestorwe — “gestorben”, leje — “lügen”, Sorje — “sorgen”, moke — “machen”, koke — “kochen”; assimilatory changes in groups of consonants sn, sm, sl, sp, st, sw, nd, nt, ld, lf.

F. E. Peters stellt in seiner Studie Überlegungen zur Idiomatik und Phraseologie des Plattdeutschen an, der Muttersprache des Schriftstellers. Er plädiert dafür, das Plattdeutsche in seiner Besonderheit und unabhängig von Vergleichen mit dem Hochdeutschen zu bewerten und zu würdigen. Kürze, Prägnanz, Anschaulichkeit und intuitive Treffsicherheit des Plattdeutschen werden hervorgehoben und anhand von Beispielen aus dem Alltag belegt. Peters unterstreicht die sich in dem Bewahren von Formeln ausdrückende „einfältige Sprachfrömmigkeit“ des Plattdeutschen, für ihn ein Zeichen junger und primitiverer Sprachen, gewissermaßen „Sprach-Marionetten“ im Kleistschen Sinn ausgestattet mit der Anmut des Unbewussten.

Charakterisierung des literarischen Schaffens von Moritz Jahn. Seine Bedeutung für das Plattdeutsche. F. E. Peters beschreibt, Moritz Jahn humorvoll folgend, "polare Spannungen" in Niederdeutschland: "Es gibt Niederdeutsche, die ihrem Lande nie so ganz trauen, die daheim in einer immerwährenden leisen Unruhe hinleben und die aufatmen, wenn sie in gebirgiger Gegend das nackte Gestein unter ihren Füßen fühlen. Dann wird klar, was sie sich bis dahin mühsam verhehlt haben: dass sie nämlich in einem geheimen Winkel ihrer Seele glauben, ihr Land sei vom Meere unterspült, könne an besonders dünnen Stellen durchbrechen, vom festen Kern der Erde losgerissen werden und in die Nebel der Unendlichkeit hinaustreiben. Auf felsigem Grund werden sie dann die neue und wohltuende Sicherheit mit großer Freude so lange genießen, bis das unwiderstehliche Heimweh sie zurücktreibt in die Unsicherheit."

Abstract:
"Die dröge Trina" erzählt eine von F. E. Peters in hochdeutscher Sprache veröffentlichte Geschichte aus der "Baasdörper Krönk", der bedeutenden niederdeutschen Dorfchronik desselben Autors. Der Roman, 1946 erschienen, beschreibt, wie die Bauerntochter Trina Dührsen, raffgierige Anbeterin des "Taler-Gottes", durch ihre Habgier das Leben ihres Bruders und ihres Ehemannes zerstört und versucht, ihren Neffen Wilhelm um sein Erbe zu bringen. Der Roman findet dennoch ein versöhnliches Ende, als Trina inmitten der Inflation der Jahre 1922/1923 die Entwertung ihres Geldes und damit die Vergänglichkeit irdischer Güter erlebt, gleichzeitig aber menschliche Werte schätzen lernt . Der eigenwillige Untertitel "Geschichte einer Poahr Dangoaß" bezieht sich auf den Spitz- und Schimpfnamen Trinas, eine Verballhornung des französischen Begriffs "poire d’angoisse" (für das Folterinstrument der Mundbirne), der ihr in Anspielung an ihren schlechten Charakter und die schönen, aber wenig schmackhaften Birnen ihres Hofes, die "Gurgelschnürer", verliehen wurde. "Die dröge Trina" schildert mit freundlich-ironischer Empathie mentalitätsgeschichtlich aufschlussreiche Verhaltensweisen, Sitten und Bräuche der norddeutschen Provinz im Zeitalter der Industrialisierung. Berühmtheit hat die Beschreibung eines Schweinewiegens erlangt. Die dröge Trina ist 1945 als Fortsetzungsroman unter dem Titel "Trina Dührsen" in den Flensburger Nachrichten erschienen.

In Miriam Toews’s A Complicated Kindness (2004; Giller Prize finalist; winner of Canada's Governor General's Award) Nomi Nickel, a sixteen-year-old Mennonite girl from southern Manitoba, Canada, tells the story of her short life before her excommunication from the closed community of the fictional East Village. East Village is based on a real town in southern Manitoba called Steinbach (where Toews was born), where Mennonite culture remains segregated from the rest of the world to protect its distinctive Anabaptist Protestantism and to keep its language, Mennonite Low German or Plattdeutsch, a living language, one which is both linguistically demotic yet ethnically hieratic because of its role in Mennonite faith. Since the Reformation, and more precisely the work of Menno Simons after whom this ethno-religious group was christened, Mennonites have used their particular brand of Low German to separate themselves from the rest of humankind. Toews constructs her novel as a multilingual narrative, to represent the cultural and religious tensions within. Set in the early 1980s, A Complicated Kindness details the events that lead up to Nomi’s excommunication, or shunning; Nomi’s exclusion is partly due to her embracing of the “English” culture through popular, mostly 1970s, music and books such as J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye. Insofar as Toews’s novel presents the conflict between the teenaged narrator and the patriarchal, conservative Mennonite culture, the books stands at the crossroads of negative and positive freedom. Put succinctly, since the beginnings of the Protestant Reformation, Mennonites have sought negative freedom, or freedom from persecution, yet its own tenets foreclose on the positive freedom of its individual members. This problem reaches its most intense expression in contemporary Mennonitism, both in Canada and in the EU, for Mennonite culture returns constantly to its founding precepts, even through the passage of time, coupled with diasporic history. Toews presents this conflict between this early modern religious subculture and postmodern liberal democracy through the eyes of a sarcastic, satirical Nomi, who, in this Bildungsroman, must solve the dialectic of her very identity: literally, the negative freedom of No Me or positive freedom of Know Me. As Mennonite writing in Canada is a relatively new phenomenon, about 50 years old, the question for those who call themselves Mennonite writers arises in terms of deciding between new, migrant, separate-group writing and writing as English-speaking Canadians.
