Abstract:
Biological pretreatment is a cost-effective method of delignifying lignocellulosic biomass, making it less recalcitrant to hydrolysis into fermentable sugars. In this study, selected agricultural wastes were pretreated with mushrooms (Lentinus squarrosulus and Pleurotus ostreatus) to delignify them for bioethanol production. The substrates were supplemented with 0.2 % CaCO3, inoculated with 12 % (w/w) L. squarrosulus and Pleurotus ostreatus spawns and incubated at 25 oC for 21 days. The highest lignin removal and highest bioethanol yield of 77.45 % and 13.98 % were obtained from bean husks pre

Depression and anxiety are common mental health conditions that can have a significant impact on an individual’s life. Although orthodox treatments for these conditions can be effective, they often accompanied with unfavorable side effects. Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus spp) have been reported to possess numerous health benefits, including antitumor, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. The present study aimed to investigate the antidepressant and sedative properties of the ethanolic extracts of Pleurotus squarrosulus. This study focused on the cultivation of two local fungal species from spawn produced locally. The strains were isolated on PDA medium, then transplanted on sorghum-based seedling substrate. The production of fruit bodies was carried out on a substrate based on rice haulms mixed with sawdust of Gilbertiodedron dewevrei enriched with rice bran. In total, 4310g of Pleurotus tuber-regium fruit bodies and 894.22g of Lentinus squarrosulus were harvested after three successive emergences, the time between emergences being 3 to 4 days for Lentinus squarrosulus and 30 days for Pleurotus tuber-regium.

The increasing problem of carbon dioxide emissions has become a significant concern, with mushroom production identified as one of the contributing factors. This is because the mushroom production process emits carbon dioxide through respiration, and the carbon dioxide emitted by the mushrooms contributes to an increase in greenhouse gases. The carbon dioxide emitted by mushrooms can be utilized in various applications, such as supporting vegetable cultivation in greenhouses. However, the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by mushrooms varies. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the growth, yi

Lignocellulosic substrates are wastes in the environment whose reducing sugars are not readily available for use. Biological pretreatment is the use of microorganisms and/or their metabolites to break down substrates to obtain simple sugars which is also cheap compared with other pretreatment techniques. This work is aimed at degrading lignocellulosic substrates with higher mushrooms to obtain simple sugars that could be used as raw materials for other industrial processes.
