Abstract:
BackgroundNon-clinical psychosis-like symptoms (PLIKS) occur in about 15% of the population. It is not clear whether adverse events during early development alter the risk of developing PLIKS. We aimed to examine whether maternal infection, diabetes or pre-eclampsia during pregnancy, gestational age, perinatal cardiopulmonary resuscitation or 5-min Apgar score were associated with development of psychotic symptoms during early adolescence.MethodA longitudinal study of 6356 12-year-old adolescents who completed a semi-structured interview for psychotic symptoms in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) birth cohort. Prenatal and perinatal data were obtained from obstetric records and maternal questionnaires completed during pregnancy.ResultsThe presence of definite psychotic symptoms was associated with maternal infection during pregnancy [adjusted odds ratio (OR) 1.44, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.11–1.86, p=0.006], maternal diabetes (adjusted OR 3.43, 95% CI 1.14–10.36, p=0.029), need for resuscitation (adjusted OR 1.50, 95% CI 0.97–2.31, p=0.065) and 5-min Apgar score (adjusted OR per unit decrease 1.30, 95% CI 1.12–1.50, p<0.001). None of these associations were mediated by childhood IQ score. Most associations persisted, but were less strong, when including suspected symptoms as part of the outcome. There was no association between PLIKS and gestational age or pre-eclampsia.ConclusionsAdverse events during early development may lead to an increased risk of developing PLIKS. Although the status of PLIKS in relation to clinical disorders such as schizophrenia is not clear, the similarity between these results and findings reported for schizophrenia indicates that future studies of PLIKS may help us to understand how psychotic experiences and clinical disorders develop throughout the life-course.

Abstract:
Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) help the learners to take control of their learning. PLEs enable the learners to set their own leaning targets and manage their learning by communicating with others in the process of learning. As latest technological advancements have brought revolution in every field of life, so as in the PLEs. Modern PLEs are the integration of a number of latest technologies i.e. blogs, Wikis, RSS feeds, where content is shaped as per the individual needs and interests of the students. Focusing on these latest aspects of the PLEs, University of South Australia initiated a three year new learning platform project in 2010, called LearnOnline, which will replace the University's current online teaching environment UniSAnet. LearnOnline was launched with a vision to foster richer learning through promoting students' active involvement in their courses and involving the students in a deeper learning experience. LearnOnline is built on modular approach and consists of different components i.e. ePortfolio, Course Outline, Lecture Recording, Copyright Monitoring, Student Email, Assessment and Feedback, Virtual Classroom, Course and Teacher Evaluation. Each component is developed separately and is fully independent. This methodology is helping the incremental implementation of the LearnOnline. As soon as a component is completed, after testing, it becomes the part of LearnOnline. In this paper, the author explains the features and workings of LearnOnline in detail and also evaluates its design methodologies.

Abstract:
Information technology that is currently developing does not only apply to the world of information technology but has developed into other fields of work that require information technology to support the needs of their field. Services in information technology have been implemented by the District Internet Service Center (PLIK) Bangka Belitung to support government programs. Research conducted at PLIK aims to see and assess how PLIK's performance, especially Mobile PLIK, to the service level of their partners' satisfaction. During the PLIK research, researchers wanted to measure their level of service. The level of service that is measured is by looking at the implementation of the SLA (Service Level Agreement) that they have contracted with the user to what extent. So, the researchers took the data by observation, interviews, and questionnaires. After all, data is needed, the COBIT 4.0 Framework becomes a reference for researchers to examine this service level with the Delivery and Support (DS) domain on each item. The conclusion from the whole research process is that Mobile PLIK has measured their service maturity level (Maturity Level) at layer 4, namely Managed and Measurable. However, there are several districts that are still at layer 3, namely Define. Define that they have targeted and planned every measure of their work steps and of course they can improve the services provided to partners and be reciprocal to partner satisfaction with PLIK. Unlike the case with Define, layer 4 is Managed and Measurable, which means that Mobile PLIK has been organized and can be measured in conducting every agreement between partners and PLIK, so that its implementation can be accounted for every item in the domain.

Abstract:
Technological developments are a requirement for more practical system operation. One example is in data transmission. Wireless data communication is currently very popular. In today's revolution 4.0, of course, the use of cables in data transmission media is rarely used, but not every device supports wireless data communication. One of them is the PLC (Programable Logic Controller). As for additional extensions for PLCs to communicate wirelessly, they are sold separately and, of course, the price is quite expensive. Therefore, a solution for PLCs to communicate wirelessly using the TL-WN722N access point is widely available on the market. Measurements are made with the concept of point to point by looking at the results of modbus scans using Modscan32 on a PC server. The results show that the optimal maximum distance is 80 meters, with an average data transmission time of 1 second.

Abstract:
This article presents a case-study of two distance learning courses, in order to address the question of universal adoption of mobile devices and applications by students, and the impact of these devices in personal learning environments (PLEs). First, a critical discussion of the value of these concepts in the current technological context was carried out, followed by an analysis of their impact on educational use, based on data collected in online courses on physics and statistics at Universidade Aberta, the Portuguese Open University. The results indicated that all students have adopted mobile learning, and the make-up of an individual’s PLE depends more on the learning resources available rather than on gender or age. These findings can help provide more efficient ways to implement learning by connecting current social needs to learners’ mobile PLEs, particularly when flexibility of time and space are of utmost importance. Further studies at the Portuguese Open University will address a larger and more balanced sample of students across more course units.

Abstract:
Today, we do not talk about death very much; if we do, we talk about mass death in media which is an estranged tragedy and does not appeal to us. On the other hand, the spirit of the time which we live in tries to prevent us from aging mostly by using consumerist philosophy, thus placing death and dying, and, especially, the consciousness of our own death in the grey zone. In this article, we aspire to sketching the main attitudes toward death in consumerist society, using theories of consumerism and also Google Analytics in order to define the lifestyle of the contemporary consumerist. Then, with some examples from the point of view of philosophy of religion and also keeping in mind the theology of Book of Job from the perspective of philosophy of religion, we will try to find an answer to the question – “how does the theology of the Book of Job or the interpretations thereof can help us to form our style of death?” Two main ideas are synthesised in the course of the article: firstly, consumerist lifestyle can be characterised as “desire for the desire”, while in Book of Job, when it is read from the consumerist’s perspective, one can see the repeating of faith, which is also an essential part of the theology of Soren Kierkegaard. Thus, the synthesis of these conclusions can construct consumer’s “death style”, which can be defined as “desire for the everlasting”.

Abstract:
Background: Cloning techniques are applied to an endangered orchid species in order to reproduce individual plants and to preserve their genetic characteristics. Objectives: To establish a new protocol for clonal propagation of a threatened orchid of horticultural importance. Study species: Trichocentrum stramineum, a threatened orchid endemic to Mexico. Study site and duration: Totutla, Veracruz, Mexico. All experiments were designed and carried out at the Botanical Garden-UNAM and the IIAF-UMSNH over a course of six years. Methods: Seeds were germinated in a modified KC basal medium; protocorms and apical bud explants were obtained from the resulting in vitro plants and cultivated with or without plant growth regulators (PGRs). Both experimental groups were subcultured in order to evaluate the number of protocorm-like bodies (PLBs) and buds per explant. Results: On average, protocorms generated 51.2 and 54.1 PLBs in the absence or presence of 1 mg l-1 6-benzyladenine (BA), respectively, while 13.1 and up to 23.7 PLBs and / or shoots were observed on the apical bud explants in the absence or presence of 1 mg l-1 kinetin, respectively. In both cases, responses were direct, without the formation of an intervening callus. Approximately 200 PLBs were subcultured and developed into whole plants within 14 weeks. These were acclimatized to greenhouse conditions with a 90 % survival rate after 12 weeks. After 44 weeks, flowering was observed (3 %) individuals measuring at least 12 cm in height. Conclusions: The developed protocol proved to hold great potential for commercial propagation and conservation programs.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This book, which conducts a comparative analysis of constitutions and consists of two main parts, focuses on the basic constitutional laws in Poland and Germany. The first part contains an extensive study of the aforementioned laws in both countries, their significance in terms of the actual constitutions of those countries and their historical, cultural and political foundations in the context of European public law. The second part presents a series of individual theoretical and practice-oriented studies, including ten contributions by former and current judges at both Poland’s and Germany’s constitutional courts and the European Court of Justice. The main subjects these essays address are the challenges to the basic constitutional laws currently posed by the friction between freedom and security, the European dimension of fundamental rights protection and the situation relating to fundamental rights in a globalised world. This bilingual anthology offers its readers in-depth and multifaceted analyses of the basic constitutional laws in Poland and Germany, plus extensive comparative legal references.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the risk of ‘recharacterization’, which refers to the court’s practice of deeming a transaction to be something other than what the parties intended. It argues that although English courts rarely indulge in recharacterization, there are policy considerations that may come into play and put the more adventurously structured transactions at risk. It is important that this risk, which is a legal risk, be understood and evaluated in the more extreme cases and that it is strictly confined to cases where the policy reasons for recharacterization are compelling. The remainder of the chapter discusses different ways of raising money, the risk of wrong labels, essential differences between sale and security, the lender’s dilemma, and the House of Lords’ decision in National Westminster Bank plc v Spectrum Plus Ltd.

This chapter considers borrowing as an important method of financing a company’s activities, and security as a right of recourse against company property if the loan is not repaid on time. It begins by discussing security for financial obligations, paying particular attention to security contracts, the redemption or discharge of security and the realisation of security. It then turns to the registration of non-possessory security contracts, the priorities of legal and equitable charges and floating charges as a form of security and their crystallisation. The extent to which the assets of a company to which anyone is considering extending credit are already charged as security is also explained. The chapter considers three particularly significant court cases: Evans v Rival Granite Quarries Ltd [1910] 2 KB 979; Re Spectrum Plus Ltd [2005] UKHL 41, [2005] 2 AC 680; and Re Yorkshire Woolcombers Association Ltd [1903] 2 Ch 284.

Abstract:
Courses in language construction are often taught with an eye to generating interest in the linguistics major from undergraduate students who might otherwise be uninterested in taking an introductory course. With the focus primarily on linguistics, the artistry of language invention is often lost. This chapter lays out a method of teaching and evaluating language construction that is rigorous, informed by linguistics, and takes language creation seriously as an art form. Specifically, this chapter argues for the importance of instruction in naturalistic language creation. Two forms of naturalism are introduced and contrasted: weak naturalism (based on statistical typological patterns) and strong naturalism (based on simulating natural linguistic evolution). The chapter closes with an extended example of a homework assignment employing some of the ideas introduced in the chapter, plus a word of caution about the use of linguistic theory in a course on language construction.

Abstract:
During the last half of the nineteenth century, medical schools grew significantly in number and enrollments, as did all institutions of higher education. Many medical schools added optional fall and spring sessions to compete with the private courses and provide additional training for their students. Faculty members were appointed in the clinical specialties, which led to the expansion of the curriculum to include courses in the specialties and the replacement of the repetitive course with a graded one. After the Civil War, enrollments in higher education grew significantly, especially in professional schools. The number of students enrolled in all institutions of higher education increased from 32,000 in 1860 to 256,000 in 1900. The 1860 enrollments, which consisted almost entirely of men, comprised 3.1 percent of the white male population between 18 and 21 years of age. The 1900 enrollments, which included many women in colleges and normal schools, comprised 5.0 percent of the white male and female population between 18 and 21 years of age. In 1860, 51 percent of the students were enrolled in colleges and universities, 44 percent in medical, law, and theological schools, and 6 percent in normal schools. In 1900, 41 percent were enrolled in colleges, 33 percent in professional schools, and 27 percent in normal schools. A higher standard of living and greater access to education led many students to enter college directly from secondary school, according to a study of 20,000 graduates of 11 well-established colleges. The study found that the median age at graduation, between 22 and 23 years, changed very little between the late eighteenth century and 1900, but that the range of ages became smaller over the period. This indicated that students had more preliminary education and were less likely to delay attending college. The admission standards of the colleges remained low. Most did not require a high school diploma. Entrance requirements included Latin and mathematics, plus Greek for admission to the classical course. Equivalents were widely accepted. Most students did not meet even these requirements.

Abstract:
The chapter ‘Schizophrenia’ covers all aspects of this disorder. It first describes in detail the major and varied clinical features, before reviewing the diagnosis and classification of schizophrenia and how these have varied over time. The section on aetiology includes description of the recent major genomic advances, plus consideration of environmental and psychological factors. The neurobiology and pharmacology of schizophrenia are discussed before a summary is given of the neurodevelopmental model. Returning to clinical matters, the chapter then reviews the course and prognosis of schizophrenia before a detailed description of treatment and management. It concludes with the important issue of how schizophrenia is discussed with patients and carers.

Abstract:
The smallest unit of a verb is its stem and it is this stem that is most frequently used as the imperative. There are other means as well, all based on a stem plus a suffix: a polite request is issued in two ways, depending on whether one or more persons are being addressed. A third form is the compelling request, being applied as encouragement or to convey a certain degree of impatience. A paraphrased request is formed by using, for instance, an affirmative of negated present-tense form or by a verb form expressing possibility. Instructions can also be given in a declarative form expressing present or future. A certain ‘imperative’ effect can of course also be achieved by using modal forms corresponding to ‘can’ and ‘may’.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter studies the cost-based and margin approaches, which are attractive to courts because they rely on actual data and are easily understood. There are several variants. The simplest version is to collect data on the cartel’s avoidable, marginal, or average costs, and add to this a competitive or pre-cartel margin to determine ‘but for’ prices. If the cartel’s prices are found to exceed the prices calculated using the firm’s marginal costs plus a competitive margin, the difference is regarded as the overcharge. This approach is attractive because it is based on the defendant’s cost data, the prices charged by the defendant, and evidence of what might be regarded as a reasonable or competitive mark-up on these costs. More recently, the English courts have adopted pure cost-based approaches which treat cost as a proxy for benefits or to take account of cost inefficiencies and cost savings during the cartel period.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how the lower courts confront central legal questions that routinely arise in price-fixing and other horizontal-restraints cases in which the existence of an agreement is in dispute. In light of the discussion in the previous chapters, it is not surprising that the practice in lower courts is difficult to characterize—although some commentators nevertheless depict a substantially harmonious state of affairs. The problem begins with the frequent need to make inferences from circumstantial evidence, which all acknowledge to be necessary. As a consequence of the problem of defining agreement, it is difficult to know what one is trying to infer or how inferences can be made even when evidence of agreement appears to be fairly direct. Various seemingly clear rules, such as the demand for so-called plus factors, are unclear upon examination and cast serious doubt on the conventional view of the law.

Abstract:
Most people are more perceptive to the geometric rather than the symbolic representation of information. In engineering disciplines, visualization combined with game characteristics can provide an essential mode to facilitate students’ understanding of important and abstract concepts, and improve students’ willingness to learn. In this project, game characteristics are introduced into course module design, but different from commercially available games in that the level of the contents and assessment tools in this project are meaningful to teachers, students, and parents. This paper focuses on the design of the Gaming and Interactive Visualization for Education system. Specifically, some initial design results from the three universities for three different courses plus the development of evaluation system will be presented. The system is expected to (1) offer interactions with gaming scenarios that can excite emotions, (2) provide an engaging learning experience of understanding engineering concepts by allowing students to visualize and interact with 3-D objects in a game scenario, (3) employ situated learning by exposing students to the type of challenges they will face in industry, and (4) fit better with the learning styles of the majority of engineering students.

Abstract:
Published studies in the open literature and experience of new engineering graduates have shown that employees who are able to clearly communicate their thoughts and ideas to their employers through written reports and oral presentations advance more quickly in the organisation compared to those who lack these skills even if they possess superior technical knowledge. Also, surveys of engineering employers have shown that while the technical knowledge of engineering graduates is considered to be adequate, the perception is that graduates lack the personal communication skills required of them in the work place. The traditional method of teaching communication skills to engineering students is through especially designed units which are taught by specialists in the field of communication. Engineering students generally consider these units to be of little importance due to a lack of engineering relevance. In order to overcome such shortcomings, teaching and learning of communication skills was integrated with the teaching of technical contents to final year students in a two-semester long Final Year Project (FYP) core unit in the undergraduate engineering degree during 2003 to 2008. The assessments tasks for the FYP unit included submission of a Project Proposal, a Progress Report, a Research Paper and a Final Report, plus an Oral Presentation. Students were given instruction on how to prepare for these activities at appropriate times during the semester. This paper describes the details of the approach used and the results obtained by students who have completed this unit.

Abstract:
For the past couple of decades there has been a change of emphasis in the world nuclear power from that of building new Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) to that of taking measures to optimize the life cycle of operational plants. National approaches in many countries showed an increase of interest in Plant Life Management (PLIM), both in terms of plant service life assurance and in optimizing the service or operational life of NPP. A strong convergence of views is emerging from different National approaches, particularly in the area of the economic aspects of NPP operation and in the evolution in the scope of NPP PLIM. The latter can directly affect the cost of electricity from NPP in an increasingly competitive environment. The safety considerations of a NPP are paramount and those requirements have to be met to obtain and to extend/renew the operating license. To achieve the goal of the long term safe, economic and reliable operation of the plant an Integrated Life Cycle Management Programme (ILCMP) is necessary. Some countries already have advanced PLIM Programmes while others still have none. The ILCMP objective is to identify all that factors and requirements for the overall plant life cycle. The optimization of these requirements would allow for the minimum period of the investment return and maximum of the revenue from the sell of the produced electricity. Recognizing the importance of this issue and in response to the requests of the Member States the IAEA Division of Nuclear Power implements the Sub-programme on “Engineering and Management Support for Competitive Nuclear Power”. Four projects within this sub-programme deal with different aspects of the NPP life cycle management with the aim to increase the capabilities of interested Member States in implementing and maintenance of the competitive and sustainable nuclear power. Although all four projects contain certain issues of PLIM there is one specific project on guidance on engineering and management practices for optimization of NPP service life including decommissioning. This particular project deals with different specific issues of NPP life management including aspects of ageing phenomena and their monitoring, issues of control and instrumentation, maintenance and operation issues, economic evaluation of NPP life cycle management including guidance on its earlier shut down and decommissioning. The paper describes in detail the full scope IAEA activities on different issues of NPP life management and some of its achievements in this field during the nearest past as well as plans for the future.

Abstract:
While much of the prior information system (IS) research has employed technology acceptance model (TAM) and theory of planned behavior (TPB) to explain user’s technology acceptance behavior, most of them use self-reported use intention to develop their investigation. The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine the validity of behavioral intention’s prediction on actual system usage under a voluntary context. By integrating constructs of the two closely related theoretical paradigm (TAM and TPB), we propose an integrated model to investigate the relationship. In doing so, we used questionnaire to gather the system usage perceptions of students who took an online management information system (MIS) course at a large Canadian university. At the same time, we also set up the e-learning system to record students’ actual usage. Using partial least square (PLS) approach, data collected from 105 students are tested against the model showing a very good fit with 60% explanation of the behavioral intention. The relationship between the intention and actual system use however was found to be insignificant and weak. Our study questions the validity of using self-reported intention to represent system usage and provides insight into future research directions on technology acceptance behavior.

Abstract:
Decoding the Disciplines is a methodology aimed to support teachers and students of University to tackle obstacles and difficulties in learning process. It is assumed that students come to classroom with different level of secondary school preparation and teachers are generally reinforcing the inequalities in principle deplored as form of injustice in our society. The question of giving tools that students need to succeed in our disciplines requires new strategies intend to make teaching effective in line with the development of the democratic vision of teaching. The methodology represents a dynamic sequence of steps based on the understanding of the content of discipline taught and learned. All disciplines are involved, humanities as well as sciences. Under the Erasmus Plus Programme some European Universities are collecting relevant evidences to understand what to teach about an academic discipline. Monitoring students' learning and motivation means to bring out the bottlenecks, which hinder the achievement of knowledge and slow down the learning process leading to failure. Presentation of initial results aims to share the benefits of this methodology able to guide students to master basic mental operations required in university courses. Decoding emerges as challenge and option for policy-makers of higher education.

Full text
Abstract:
Lower-limb amputation affects the ambulation ability and quality of life of about 600,000 individuals in the United States alone1. Individuals with transfemoral amputation typically walk slower, expend more energy, and have a higher risk of falls than able-bodied individuals2. Ambulation activities such as climbing ramps or stairs or standing up from a seated position are much more difficult than for able-bodied persons. Advances in prosthetic technologies are needed to improve the ambulation ability of above-knee amputees. Passive knee prostheses are lightweight, robust, and quiet, but can only perform activities with dissipative dynamics. Powered prostheses3 overcome this limitation by motorizing the prosthetic joints throughout the entire day, thus enabling the achievement of more activities. However, the prosthesis actuator must then accommodate a wide range of speed and torque to support the various activities, plus provide power over the course of the entire day. Consequently, powered prostheses provide the ability to perform more tasks at the expense of substantial weight, noise, and battery life, which in turn affect their acceptability and clinical viability. To address these shortcomings, we propose a hybrid actuation design for prosthetic knees. The proposed hybrid actuation system uses a motor, transmission, and control only for those activities requiring net-positive mechanical energy, such as climbing on stairs and ramps or performing sit-to-stand transfers. For non-positive mechanical energy tasks, such as standing and walking, the motor and transmission are mechanically disconnected, and passive knee components are used alone, thus achieving improved joint dynamics, and avoiding any electrical energy consumption.

In ASME 2008 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. ASMEDC, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc2008-49827.

Full text
Abstract:
Modern automobiles contain various mechatronical components to support the task of driving. To enhance driver vision and driving safety at night time, advanced lighting systems, such as a predictive advanced front lighting system (PAFS) enhance automotive lighting by swiveling the headlights horizontally into approaching curves on a winding road. In addition to this, basic leveling light systems tilt the headlights vertically, in order to adjust to the vehicle chassis pitch due to the vehicle load or suspension effects based on the vehicle dynamics from driving on a rough road. More advanced leveling systems even account for the vertical course of an undulating road using GPS-data to locate the vehicle’s position plus digital map data to predict the vertical course of the road in front of the vehicle. That way, the headlights follow the road curvature and illuminate the road ahead of the vehicle without glaring oncoming traffic. In order to design, evaluate, and optimize the control algorithm within the electronic control unit (ECU) of the leveling light system, various control parameter values need to be adjusted and fine-tuned to ensure an optimal response of the system to the current road scenario. For this task, numerous time-consuming and costly test drives at night are necessary. This paper proposes to use a Virtual Reality-based night driving simulator as tool to simulate and evaluate an advanced leveling light system. The PC-based night drive simulator visualizes the complex beam patterns of automotive headlights in high detail and in real-time. The user drives a simulated vehicle over a virtual test track at night, while the vehicle motion directly affects the lighting direction of headlights. Thus, the effect of the vehicle dynamics on the lighting can be evaluated directly in the simulator. The system is connected to the control algorithm of the advanced leveling light system, which controls the headlights tilting angle. This provides a close-to-reality simulation of the advanced leveling light system during a simulated drive at night. That way, within the virtual prototyping process of the advanced leveling light system, good combinations of control parameter values can be indentified, based on virtual test drives in the night driving simulator, and the number of real test drives can be reduced significantly. Promising combinations of the control parameter values then can be validated during a real test drive a night.

Abstract:
During the recent years an increasing interest in computational reactor safety analysis is to replace the conservative evaluation model calculations by best estimate calculations supplemented by uncertainty analysis of the code results. The evaluation of the margin to acceptance criteria, e.g. the maximum fuel rod clad temperature, should be based on the upper limit of the calculated uncertainty range. For example, due to power increase, licensing limits are approached. Therefore, regulators are looking closer on the way, how calculations are performed to meet these acceptance criteria. Methods have been developed and presented to quantify the uncertainty of computer code results. They are briefly presented in this paper. The present overview considers the international situation of development of uncertainty evaluation of computer code results and their application in licensing. Best estimate analysis plus uncertainty evaluation is used in licensing up to now in approximately seven countries. Demonstrations of applying uncertainty methods have been performed in nine additional countries at least. Most organizations use statistical methods. One statistical method is the GRS method proposing ordered statistics. Several demonstrations to apply the GRS method have been performed by GRS for courses of events in the nuclear steam supply system, calculating experiments as well as nuclear power plants. The method has also been applied for post test calculations of containment behavior, as well as severe accidents. One of the most important conclusions is that care must be exercised in determining ranges and probability distributions of the uncertain input parameters.

Abstract:
Networks that foster collaboration have been used for educational purposes for many years as they optimise resources and enhance the student experience by bringing together the very best of the teaching staff available. When nuclear education at UK universities had declined to such an extent that its sustainability was in jeopardy, networking the remaining pockets of expertise at several universities was proposed as the best solution. The Nuclear Technology Education Consortium (NTEC), was therefore established in 2005, and brings together six preeminent nuclear universities in the UK plus the Nuclear Department of the Defence Academy to provide a Master’s level programme in nuclear science and technology. Following extensive consultation with industry an innovative delivery method of one week modular courses is used for the programme which caters for both full-time and part-time students. Full-time students can complete the programme in one year (September to September) while part-time students complete the programme in three years. As the courses are all delivered in this one-week format they can also be taken individually for continual professional development. The programme can also be completed via web-based distance learning which provides options for the 21st century student wherever they are based. With many countries embarking on a new build programme, extending the lifetime of their current reactors and planning geological disposal facilities the nuclear workforce will need to expand over the next decade. The flexibility of the NTEC programme allows both the current nuclear workforce to upskill as well as the development of the next generation workforce, providing them with the skills, competencies and professionalism required by the nuclear industry. Over 200 students have completed the programme on a full-time basis, with 80% either entering the nuclear industry directly, or embarking on further nuclear education programmes, demonstrating that the curriculum of the NTEC programme is matched to the requirements of industry. Nuclear education at UK universities has grown substantially in the last twelve years with NTEC at the forefront, producing graduates to meet the global workforce demand, both in terms of quantity and quality.
