Abstract:
The essay is an attempt to highlight the significance and the extent of religious influence on classical Malay literature. It plans to do this through the analysis of the structural elements of the plot at both at the surface and underlying level. To narrow down the analysis, only one genre of Malay literature, the so-called hikayat romance will be taken as corpus of investigation. To allow room for a more comprehensive analysis within this restricted corpus, two types of hikayat romance will be taken to task; these are the fantasy/court romance and the hagiographical romance. Both of these works are suitable for this study as they exhibit a remarkable level of religious influence in their textual elements. The analysis, however, will focus especially on the “exile motif” which is the controlling and generative element in the plot. Keywords: hikayat romance, generic structure, exile motif, Hindu interpretative model, sufistic interpretative model

Abstract:
The authors investigate to what extent differential equations can describe the dynamics of love relations in masochistic novellas. Unlike previous researchers, they base their analysis not only on psychological credibility. They relate their model to the ideas of literary criticism. The authors compare Ivan Turgenev's Torrents of Spring with the most famous masochistic novella Venus in Furs by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. To prove that the dynamics of masochistic relationships differ from that of the other types of romance they also investigate the plot of the undoubtedly non-masochistic story by Anton Chekhov “The Lady with the Dog.” Instruments of literary criticism coupled with mathematical modelling allow the authors to reproduce the temporal and spatial dynamics of love plots in fiction more precisely and clearly than it was done in previous research.

Abstract:
The expedition on Malory’s Morte d’Arthur emphasis on the masculine activity of chivalry—fighting, questing, ruling— while parallelly reflects the chivalric enterprise as impossible in absence of the feminine in a subjugated position. The medieval romance text of Malory differs from other Arthurian romance literature in the explicit legislation (as opposed to implicit coding) of chivalric values, most notably in the swearing of the Pentecostal Oath, an event unique to Malory’s text. This paper emphasis on the way the institution of the Oath defines and sharpens specific ideals of masculine and feminine gender identities in the Arthurian community, arguing that a compulsion to fulfill these ideals drives the narrative of the Morte d’ Arthur forward to its inevitable ending. Thus, the function of gender in the Morte d’Arthur can only be adequately explored in a book that traces in depth the development of gender constraints from the beginning of the “Tale of King Arthur” to the “Day of Destiny” and its aftermath. One reason the Morte d’Arthur merits a sustained study in terms of gender is due to its status as the most comprehensive and sustained medieval treatment of the Arthurian legend by a single author. This text is about the famous fiction stories about legendary King Arthur, his life and death predominantly compose the spine of Malory’s tale. There are, as well, other passages and tales, in which Arthur is not in the centre of the plot. Abstract:
This article incorporates Gerald Prince’s and Caroline Levine’s work on form to reveal some of the innovations in Patrick Gale’s ‘A Slight Chill’ ([1996] 2018). This short story juxtaposes two antagonistic plots: the vampire Lotta Wexel’s gastronomic activities and her teacher Angel Voysey’s romance. By attending to, and drawing connections between, smaller forms (e.g. allusions and metaphors) and larger ones (plots and genre), I argue that we may better understand Gale’s project. Lotta’s plot effectively exposes and frustrates Angel’s. In foregrounding such interactions, he encourages the reader to reassess both the affordances and the inadequacies of the models and expectations that Angel inherits. This article goes on to analyse Gale’s screenplay for his upcoming film adaptation to show how he gives a new application to his earlier project. If the short story is particularly invested in the decisions before Angel, then the screenplay explores, even more so than its source material, how and why we categorize characters into hierarchical forms. This article contributes to knowledge, then, by examining Gale’s writing programme, which has received inadequate scholarly attention; by illuminating some of its complexities; and by demonstrating the value of thinking about the short story in terms of form.

Abstract:
Abstract Hawthorne’s Rome is the home of dark and evil catacombs. It is a city haunted by evil spirits from the past that actively shape the romance’s plot. Rome’s dark gardens, endless staircases, hidden corners and vast catacombs, as well as the malodorous Jewish ghetto, affect Donatello’s and Miriam’s judgment, almost forcing them to get rid of the Model, Miriam’s persecutor. Hawthorne’s narrator’s shockingly violent, harsh and seemingly anti-Semitic description of the ghetto in Rome is just one among many similarly ruthless, and at times offensive, accounts of the city wherein Hawthorne situates his last completed romance, The Marble Faun. Hawthorne’s two-year stay in Rome in 1858-59 sets the scene for his conception of The Marble Faun. In addition to providing Hawthorne with the extensive contact with art and artists that undoubtedly affected the choice of his protagonists (Kenyon, a sculptor; Hilda and Miriam, painters), Italy exposed Hawthorne to Jewish traditions and history, as well as to the life of Jews in the Roman ghetto. Most probably it also aroused his interest in some of the political affairs in which Italian Jews were involved in the 1840s and 50s. This historical background, especially the well-publicized abduction and conversion of a Jewish child, Edgardo Mortara, in 1858 provides important political and cultural background for Hawthorne’s portrayal of Miriam in The Marble Faun.

Abstract:
Relevance of the study. The revealing of methodological effectiveness of integration interaction of different methods of analysis and scientific reflections for analytical procedures is relevant in the context of the intersection of interests of studies of harmony and musical semantic. Main objective of the study – to designate semantic aspects of harmony in conditions of unlocked structures on material of romances of the nineteenth century. Methodology. An integrative methodological projection of algorithms of study tonally-harmonic and compositional processes on the procedure of musical semantic analysis is proposed. General outline of the analytical operations deployed in several discourses: • functional-harmonic and compositional analysis of the piece in its entirety, taking into account the poetic framework; examine the nature of the interaction of harmonic and compositional logic; • the isolation of the verbal text of the key signs of poetry - semantic words; determination of their compositional arrangement in musical form; • segmentation of musical intonation tokens, their selection from the text of the work, revealing the breadth of contextual coverage of meanings and semantic potential; correlation with the semantics of «migratory genre and intonation formulas»; • detection of specificity of implement semantic elements within the analyzed text or composing style, revealing of aspects of particular musical semantics; detection meaning of harmonic connection tokens, wich unlock structure, with the word and the melodic intonation; definition of internal, external and immanent, extramusical nature of the phenomenon; establishing its degree of semantic activity. Results. Varieties of unlocked structures are systematized: with system-logical parameters – functionally, subsystemically and modulation unlocked structures; with phonic parameters – dissonance and consonance unlocked structures; with causal parameters – potentially and principally unlocked structures. External or extramusical and internal, immanent-harmonic motivations of their forming are identified. Among the external factors of unlocking are articulated: the impact of the poetic word as the source of empathy; irreversible course of imaginative mutations; retention of states innuendo, incompleteness, undecidability, anxiety, confusion, fear; semantic marks of question, surprise, regret. The gap of functional balance in the phase of clotting of harmonic integrity is seen as a reaction to the motion of meaning. Among the internal factors the unlocking are highlighted: density and irreversibility of modulation streams; phenomena of modal variability; the impact of modal experience of regulation of harmonic processes; the power of cyclic unity; inner aspiration to an open form as allusion of infinity. Functional inversion, and the special status of the tonal system with reduced centripetal potential (Y. Holopov) are listed as an important incentive of the unlocking. The phenomenon of the unlocking as a principle (the mechanism) the organization of text units of harmony is investigated in conjunction with the semantic field of piece, music tokens, artistic word and meaning. Factors of the displacement of semantic connotations fixing of keywords, semantics of "migratory genre and intonation formulas" (L. Shaimukhametova) during the formation of the vertical layers of music are considered. Three positions based on analysis of the works of R. Schumann, F. Liszt, G. Mahler, P. Tchaikovsky, M. Mussorgsky, illustrating the semantic nature of the harmonic disjunction are allocated. Position 1: harmony as meaning generator. It acts at the level of the formation of intonation and harmonic tokens – pitch compacted units of musical sense, elements of particular musical semantics. It forms a zone of high concentration of semantic elements in a vertical cut of music. It is fixed in vocal miniatures: R. Schumann’s «Im wunderschonen Monat Mai», F. Liszt’s «Verlassen», M. Mussorgsky‘s «Orphan». Position 2: harmony as a regulator of meaning. It acts at the level of the changes of emotional amplitudes. It provides strength and depth of emotional impulse. It revealed in F. Liszt’s romances and songs: «J’ai perdu ma force et ma vie», «Sonetto XC», «La?t mich ruhen», «Was Liebe sei?», «Einst». Position 3: harmony as a modulator of meaning. It affects to the level of tonal drama, transformation of semantic field of piece. It transforms the track of pitch content irreversibly. It appears in the case of a harmonic unlocking of the modulating type, wich running contrary to the idea of rounding tone frame. It shifts whole pitch platform of musical piece under the combined influence of intonation, word, number of plot and drama of movement of meanings. It forms in vocal works: F. Liszt’s «Gebet», P. Tchaikovsky’s «We were sitting with you», M. Mussorgsky’s «General», G. Mahler «Erinnerung».

Abstract:
Joe Abercrombie is a prominent contemporary British author famous for working in such a currently popular branch of fantasy as grimdark. The characteristic feature of Abercrombie’s novels is a conscious play with conventions, traditions and clichés of classical fantasy. This article is devoted to analysis of some central figures of Abercrombie’s The First Law trilogy: infamous warrior Logen Ninefingers, young nobleman Jezal dan Luthar, inquisitor Sand dan Glokta, and Bayaz, First of the Magi. The study aims to reveal, through comparison with classical models, how the mentioned characteristic feature of Abercrombie’s books manifests itself at the level of character development. The analysis shows that for creating his characters Abercrombie employs classical archetypes (a wise mentor, a young protagonist on a long journey to find treasure), which have roots, as much as fantasy literature itself, through adventure fiction and chivalric romance, in the fairy tale and mythos. However, in distinction from the authors of classical fantasy such as J.R.R. Tolkien and his numerous less talented followers, Abercrombie fills the characters who impersonate those archetypes in his works with psychological content that is not in accord with or even contradicts their traditional plot functions. Moreover, the writer changes and transforms the meaning of those functions, thus creating a complex, shadowy realistic image of his grimdark fantasy world instead of an optimistic fairy-tale one typical of earlier fantasy books. Abercrombie’s characters are not only realistic and impressive, they are built upon a three-element structure, more complex than that of characters in classical fantasy, which demonstrates the development of this kind of literature in general.

Abstract:
In 1924The Classical Quarterlypublished a note by Alexander Haggerty Krappe titled ‘Euripides’Alcmaeonand the Apollonius Romance’. Drawing attention to the obscure origins of the ancient Greek and Roman novels in general and pointing out the scholarly agreement on the role love plays in both the ancient novels and Euripidean tragedy, Krappe observed that ‘Euripides was drawn upon for whole episodes in order to enrich the plot of the [ancient] novel’. Krappe then goes on in his note to attribute the plot of Euripides' lostAlcmaeonas a source of inspiration for one of the major episodes of theHistoria Apollonii Regis Tyri(to wit, the separation and reunion of Apollonius and his daughter, Tarsia). Today, this reliance of the ancient novels on Euripides is generally recognized, but, curiously, Krappe, while identifying an episode from the lostAlcmaeon, failed to identify a clear plot-borrowing from another extant Euripidean play, theAlcestis.

Abstract:
The love plot is one of the most widely consumed genres of fiction for women. Romance often dictates a woman's identity and her "story" or narrative, leaving little room for other avenues of self-development. However, when romance fails, even in the realm of fiction, women are left with shame. Shame might suggest a catastrophic aftereffect of the failure of women's initial investment of the love plot; however, I argue that shame functions in place of the love plot and helps to provide a critique of the oppressive and patriarchal nature of conventional romance. Using affect theory, I look at both Mrs. Henry Wood's East Lynne and Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea as they rewrite the love plot typified by Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre.

Sillitoe, Catherine. "A new model for Romance verbal clitics." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7450/.

Full text
Abstract:
Perlmutter (1971)'s seminal work on clitics has set much of the research model for ensuing studies. Despite enormous changes in linguistic theory over the intervening period, models in which clitic order is determined on the basis of grammatical person remains a key ingredient of most analyses. A key tenet of the current proposal is that clitic-forms may perform more than one syntactic function, reflected in their position within an elaborated series of feature projections including heads, not only for VP argument referents but also non-argumental datives and nominative actors. Surface clitic patterns are merely sequential spell-outs of this structure. There is no need for clitic re-ordering at a morphological or syntactic level. The proposed model requires no complex exclusion or conversion mechanisms nor sophisticated syntactic processes, whilst being iconic and, therefore, learnable without the need for prior knowledge e.g. Universal Grammar constraints. The model has no need of lexicalized units, treating all clusters as purely compositional sequences directly interpretable from context. Giving each 'case' its own position leads to a simple and coherent model readily applicable across Romance. The work addresses 1-/2-/3-/4-clitic clusters in French, Italian, Spanish, Occitan, Catalan, and Romanian in their various dialect forms, whilst briefly illustrating many other Romance dialects.

Full text
Abstract:
The overall objective of this research consists of two main parts: (1) provide evidence that autocrine production of IGF-I modulates tight junction permeability and (2) demonstrate the ability of IGFBPs to regulate IGF-I delivery across cell layers. To meet the first objective, parental and IGF-I secreting bovine mammary epithelial cells were tested for cell layer permeability, tight and adherens junction proteins, IGF-IR, and a downstream signaling components of IGF-IR. In comparison with parental cells, IGF-I secreting cells had high levels of IGF-IRs, but low levels of the junction components E-cadherin, b-catenin, and occludin. The differences in parental and IGF-I secreting cells was not due to extracellular stimuli since inclusion of IGF-I, IGFBP-3, or co-culture with SV40-IGF-I cells did not alter the barrier properties of parental cells, suggesting that intracrine signaling may alter cell connectivity. The second objective focused on exogenous rather than endogenous IGF-I and the role of IGFBPs and IGF-IRs in ligand transcytosis. Bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs) cultured on surfaces optimized to minimize paracellular transport were utilized to investigate the kinetics involved in the transport of insulin-like growth factor-I from the apical side of confluent monolayers to the basolateral side. Binding competitors were used to determine the role of the cell surface insulin-like growth factor-I receptor (IGF-IR) and cell surface insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs) in this transport process. Although IGFBPs initially retard delivery of IGF-I, using a computation model, this report shows that pulse durations of less than 6 hrs resulted in enhanced delivery of IGF-I in the presence of IGFBPs, above that for delivery in the absence of IGFBPs. In addition, the model was utilized to identify key parameters to target when developing engineered growth factors for the treatment of diseases. It is shown that the sorting factions and internalization rates are reasonable targets for the design of engineered growth factors. Since the sorting fractions are dictated by binding affinities in the acidic environment of the endosomes, it may be beneficial to design and analog of IGF-I that is more resistant to changes in pH, similar to those develop from epidermal growth factor.

This study derived the digital terrain model from lidar data using an iterative slope-based algorithm and developed processing methods for directly measuring tree height, crown diameter, and stand density. The lidar system used for this study recorded up to four returns per pulse, with an average footprint of 0.65 m and an average distance between laser shots of 0.7 m. The lidar data set was acquired over deciduous, coniferous, and mixed stands of varying age classes and settings typical of the southeastern United States (37° 25' N, 78° 41' W). Lidar processing techniques for identifying and measuring individual trees included data fusion with multispectral optical data and local filtering with both square and circular windows of variable size. The window size was based on canopy height and forest type. The crown diameter was calculated as the average of two values measured along two perpendicular directions from the location of each tree top, by fitting a four-degree polynomial on both profiles. The ground-truth plot design followed the U.S. National Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) field data layout. The lidar-derived tree measurements were used with regression models and cross-validation to estimate plot level field inventory data, including volume, basal area, and biomass. FIA subplots of 0.017 ha each were pooled together in two categories, deciduous trees and pines. For the pine plots, lidar measurements explained 97% of the variance associated with the mean height of dominant trees. For deciduous plots, regression models explained 79% of the mean height variance for dominant trees. Results for estimating crown diameter were similar for both pines and deciduous trees, with R2 values of 0.62-0.63 for the dominant trees. R2 values for estimating biomass were 0.82 for pines (RMSE 29 Mg/ha) and 0.32 for deciduous (RMSE 44 Mg/ha). Overall, plot level tree height and crown diameter calculated from individual tree lidar measurements were particularly important in contributing to model fit and prediction of forest volume and biomass.

Abstract:
This paper examines the effect of uncertain initial soil moisture on hydrologic response at the plot scale (1 m2) and the catchment scale (3.6 km2) in the presence of threshold transitions between matrix and preferential flow. We adopt the concepts of microstates and macrostates from statistical mechanics. The microstates are the detailed patterns of initial soil moisture that are inherently unknown, while the macrostates are specified by the statistical distributions of initial soil moisture that can be derived from the measurements typically available in field experiments. We use a physically based model and ensure that it closely represents the processes in the Weiherbach catchment, Germany. We then use the model to generate hydrologic response to hypothetical irrigation events and rainfall events for multiple realizations of initial soil moisture microstates that are all consistent with the same macrostate. As the measures of uncertainty at the plot scale we use the coefficient of variation and the scaled range of simulated vertical bromide transport distances between realizations. At the catchment scale we use similar statistics derived from simulated flood peak discharges. The simulations indicate that at both scales the predictability depends on the average initial soil moisture state and is at a minimum around the soil moisture value where the transition from matrix to macropore flow occurs. The predictability increases with rainfall intensity. The predictability increases with scale with maximum absolute errors of 90 and 32% at the plot scale and the catchment scale, respectively. It is argued that even if we assume perfect knowledge on the processes, the level of detail with which one can measure the initial conditions along with the nonlinearity of the system will set limits to the repeatability of experiments and limits to the predictability of models at the plot and catchment scales.

In the classic split-plot design where whole plots have a completely randomized design, the conventional analysis approach assumes a compound symmetry (CS) covariance structure for the errors of observation. However, often this assumption may not be true. In this report, we examine using different covariance models in PROC MIXED in the SAS system, which are widely used in the repeated measures analysis, to model the covariance structure in the split-plot data in which the simple compound symmetry assumption does not hold. The comparison of the covariance structure models in PROC MIXED and the conventional split-plot model is illustrated through a simulation study. In the example analyzed, the heterogeneous compound symmetry (CSH) covariance model has the smallest values for the Akaike and Schwarz’s Bayesian information criteria fit statistics and is therefore the best model to fit our example data.

Abstract:
Language-modeling--based approaches to story plot generation attempt to construct a plot by sampling from a language model (LM) to predict the next character, word, or sentence to add to the story. LM techniques lack the ability to receive guidance from the user to achieve a specific goal, resulting in stories that don't have a clear sense of progression and lack coherence. We present a reward-shaping technique that analyzes a story corpus and produces intermediate rewards that are backpropagated into a pre-trained LM in order to guide the model toward a given goal. Automated evaluations show our technique can create a model that generates story plots which consistently achieve a specified goal. Human-subject studies show that the generated stories have more plausible event ordering than baseline plot generation techniques.

Abstract:
This study illustrates a data driven system identification method for loudspeaker model estimation using the knowledge of the underlying physics of loudspeakers. In this study, diaphragm displacement is analyzed to estimate the model structure and parameters based on impulse response equivalent sampling and autoregressive moving average model. The estimated loudspeaker models are compared in the frequency response function plot. It is shown that the autoregressive moving average (ARMA) based loudspeaker models are comparable to the model estimated by the conventional method based on electrical impedance. Also ARMA modeling strategies with and without knowledge of the physics-based model are compared. Some issues related to ARMA modeling are addressed.

Hoinkes, Ulrich. Indexicality and Enregisterment as Theoretical Approaches to the Sociolinguistic Analysis of Romance Languages. Universitatsbibliothek Kiel, November 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.21941/hoinkesindexenregromlang.

Abstract:
Social indexicality and enregisterment are basic notions of a theoretical model elaborated in the United States, the aim of which is to describe the relationship between the use of language variation and patterns of social behavior at the level of formal classification. This analytical approach is characterized by focusing on the interrelation of social performance and language awareness. In my contribution, I want to show how this modern methodology can give new impetus to the study of today’s problem areas in Europe, such as migration and language or urban life and language use. In particular, I am interested in the case of Catalan, which has been studied for some time by proponents of the North American enregisterment theory. This leads me to indicate that explicit forms of social conduct, such as language shift or the emblematic use of linguistic forms, can be interpreted with regard to the social indexicality of Catalan. I thus analyze them in a way which shows that authenticity and integration in Catalan society can be achieved to a considerable extent by practicing forms of linguistic enregisterment.

Full text
Abstract:
The use of bee natural product for enhancing pollination is especially valuable in problematic crops that are generally avoided by bees. In the present research we attempted to enhance bee visitation to Male Sterile (M-S) tomato flowers generally used in the production of hybrid seeds. These flowers that lack both pollen and nectar are unattractive to bees that learn rapidly to avoid them. The specific objects were to elucidate the chemical composition of the exocrine products of two bumble bee species the North American Bombus impatiens and the Israeli B. terrestris. Of these, to isolate and identify a bee attractant which when sprayed on M-S tomato flowers will enhance bee visitation, and to provide a procedure of the pheromone application regime. During the research we realized that our knowledge of B. impatiens is too little and we narrowed the objective to learning the basic social behavior of the bees and the pattern of foraging in a flight chamber and how it is affected by biogenic amines. Colonies of B. impatiens are characterized by a high number of workers and a relatively small number of queens. Size differences between queens and workers are pronounced and the queen seems to have full control over egg laying. Only about 9% of the workers in mature colonies had mature oocytes, and there were no signs of a "competition phase" as we know in B. terrestris. Queens and workers differ in their exocrine bouquet. Queen's Dufour's gland possesses a series of linear, saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons whereas that of workers contains in addition a series of wax-type esters. Bees were trained to either visit or avoid artificially scented electronic flowers in a flight chamber. Since bee also learned to avoid scented non-rewarding flowers we attempted to interfere with this learning. We tested the effect of octopamine, a biogenic amine affecting bee behavior, on the choice behavior of free-flying bumblebees. Our results show that octopamine had no significant effect on the bees' equilibrium choice or on the overall rate of the behavioral change in response to the change in reward. Rather, octopamine significantly affected the time interval between the change in reward status and the initiation of behavioral change in the bee. In B. terrestris we studied the foraging pattern of the bees on tomato flowers in a semi commercial greenhouse in Yad Mordechai. Bee learned very quickly to avoid the non- rewarding M-S flowers, irrespective of their arrangement in the plot, i.e., their mixing with normal, pollen bearing flowers. However, bees seem to "forget" this information during the night since the foraging pattern repeats itself the next morning. Several exocrine products were tested as visitation enhancers. Among these, tarsal gland extracts are the most attractive. The compounds identified in the tarsal gland extract are mostly linear saturated hydrocarbons with small amounts of unsaturated ones. Application was performed every second day on leaves in selected inflorescences. Bee visitation increased significantly in the treated inflorescences as compared to the control, solvent treated. Treatment of the anthers cone was more effective than on the flower petals or the surrounding leaves. Methanol proved to be a non-flower-destructive solvent. We have shown that bumble bees (B. terrestris) can be manipulated by bee-borne attractants to visit non-rewarding flowers. We have further demonstrated that the bees learning ability can be manipulated by applying exogenously octopamine. Both methods can be additively applied in enhancing pollination of desired crops. Such manipulation will be especially useful in tomato cultivation for hybrid seed production.
