Abstract:
This study explores undergraduate students’ difficulties in translating English and Arabic plurals. The results of an English and Arabic plural translation test exhibited cases where Arabic plurals matching those in English were translated correctly. However, the students had difficulty translating the following: (i) Arabic plurals with a singular English equivalent, e.g., مجوهرات /mujawharaat/ jewellery; (ii) Arabic duals with two different singular stems, e.g., الرافدان the Tigris and Euphrates; (iii) multiple Arabic plurals, i.e. plurals of paucity and multiplicity, e.g., دجاج /dajaaj/ chicken, دجاجات /dajaajaat/ a number of hens; (iv) stems with two plurals and different usages, e.g., economics اقتصاديات /iqtiṣadiyyaat/, economies اقتصادات /iqtiṣadaat/; (v) compound plurals, e.g., image processors معالجات الصور /muʕaalijaat aṣṣuwar/; (vi) English nouns ending in -ies that have the same singular and plural form, e.g., series, species; (vii) singular and plural forms of the same base when the base could assume two parts of speech, e.g., rich and riches; wood and woods; (viii) foreign/Latin singular and plural forms, e.g. ,indices, larvae, tempi, oases; and (ix) names of tools and articles of dress consisting of two parts ending in -s, e.g., scissors مقص /miqaṣ/, مقصات /miqaṣaat/, scales ميزان /mīzaan/ and موازين /mawazīn/ and more. Error data analysis showed that the subjects made more errors in translating Arabic plurals into English than in translating English plurals into Arabic, made more interlanguage than interlanguage errors, had more morphological than semantic difficulties on the Arabic-English plural translation test, and had more semantic difficulties on the English-Arabic plural translation test. They tended to translate imitatively rather than discriminately, and literal translation was the most common strategy. When they could not access the meaning of a noun on the test, they provided an equivalent that was phonologically close, or offered a paraphrase, an explanation, or an extraneous equivalent. In translating English and Arabic plurals, transfers were bidirectional, i.e., students transferred a noun’s morphological features from the source to the target language, regardless of whether the source language was Arabic (L1) or English (L2). Recommendations for plural translation instruction are provided.

For the existing methods of image registration based on feature, a new method of image registration based on plural differential is proposed with the theory of plural differential. The proposed method uses plural differential to enhance the texture feature of the digital image first, and then uses SIFT to extract the keypoints, at last uses the RANSAC algorithm to get the correct number of matching keypoints.

Abstract:
In discussions of imago Dei, we largely confine ourselves to functional and moral affinity to God, that is that we have been made in God’s image with the result that obedience to God amounts to imitating his moral character and behavior. However, we need to add the existential affinity of God’s being to our understanding of God’s image in us, specifically the fact that he is both singular (in essence) and plural (in person). To some degree, people share God’s singular–plural quality and that one–many affinity can give great insight into gospel ministry. Moreover, as with the moral dimension of imago Dei, this singular–plural dimension also was marred by sin so that we, as individuals and as whole cultures, tend to lean toward one extreme or the other, toward singularity (unhealthy individualism) or plurality (monolithic communalism). The gospel of grace addresses both. Therefore, as we prepare to do ministry, we should study our audience to discern the existential lean of its own incarnation of imago Dei, so that we can best speak the gospel to fit audience need.

Abstract:
Even before they started the editorial board of the new Dutch hymnal was blamed for being too elitist. The fact that they had been selected on the basis of their expertise made them vulnerable for such criticism. Subsequently the position of the editors has been a point of continuous reflection. In this contribution, we will argue that this image of editors as dissociated from users of the hymn book is only one among several available identity repertoires. In order to answer the question which ‘identities-in-relation-to-users’ do the editors construct in the meetings of the board and how do they value these identities?, we will use a broad definition of identity and focus on positions performed in social interaction. The interaction in question concerns seven selected meetings of the editorial board, all of which were audio-taped and transcribed. Looking closely at the identities that were constructed during those meetings, we distinguish six positions, ranging from a great to no distance between editors and users: editors, professionals, experienced, vanguard, pleasers and equals.

Abstract:
Dutch compounds with ‘e’ or ‘en’ as linking element between modifier and head were presented to mother tongue speakers of Afrikaans in an experimental setting that explored the possibility that these different spelling formats would suggest a singular or plural meaning of the modifier. The participants appeared to interpret ‘en’ in the linking element as an indication for singular, and ‘e’ as signifying plural. This outcome supported the findings in comparable studies on Dutch, which also revealed a tendency to understand the spelling of the linking schwa in relation to conventions for the spelling of the plural suffix. In Afrikaans the spelling of the plural forms is ‘e’, whereas in Dutch the spelling of plural forms is ‘en’. This explains why the results of the Dutch and Afrikaans experiments, while using the same materials, are each other’s mirror image.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis intends to explore the ‘making-of’ of fashion photography, over several decades and geographies. The aim is to operate an epistemological displacement to rethink fashion photography beyond certain interpretations that identified its scope with semiotic, gender or identarian paradigms. Rather, this study proposes to think the ‘making of’ as a result of practices, negotiations, exchanges and hierarchies that characterize – but also move beyond – the very action of producing and publishing a fashion photograph. By shedding light on the multiple and overlooked sources produced around the production and circulation of the fashion image, the research explores three moments in the life of fashion photographs: the making of a fashion photograph; the collecting and conserving practices; and its exhibition. Therefore, the ‘making-of’ is here understood in a broad sense. This term is not only used to identify the descriptions and detailed information showing creative processes behind the production of a fashion photograph or an editorial series, but it also takes into consideration the mechanisms of circulations beyond the industry, the networks and the institutional processes concurring to the formation of the cultural value of an image. In doing so, this thesis sheds light on the polysemic meanings and values of fashion photography, moving beyond an interpretational path that has restricted this practice into an “applied” art in search of artistic legitimization

Abstract:
Acinarno predominantni tip je najzastupljeniji u hirurškim i biopsijskim uzorcima bez statistički značajne razlike u raspodeli predominantnih tipova u njima (p=0,65883). Predominantni tip u primarnom tumoru određuje predominantni tip u limfogenim metastazama.
Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) belongs to the family of protein-tyrosin kinase family, whose activation is associated with the proliferation of malignant cells, invasion, inhibition of apoptosis, tumor angiogenesis and metastatic spread and thus plays an important role in carcinogenesis and tumor progression. Activated mutations take place around the catalytic tyrosine kinase domain. Biopsy, cytological and surgical specimens are used for the detection of EGFR mutations at the time of diagnosis of adenocarcinoma or carcinoma with an adenocarcinoma component, most reliably using a polymerase chain reaction. The fact that the application of molecular tyrosin kinase inhibitor therapy to patients with EGFR mutated lung adenocarcinoma improves the prognosis of the disease, there is resistance in certain types of EGFR mutations and connection with histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of tumor, that the bronchoscopic specimen is often the only specimen in which it is necessary to determine the molecular profile of the tumor, the primary objective of this thesis is to determine the frequency and type of EGFR mutations and their connection with the characteristics of adenocarcinoma. In order to realize this objective, the following secondary objectives have been set: to execute histopathological reclassification of lung adenocarcinoma based on the criteria set by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, the American Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society; determine the expression of TTF-1 in lung adenocarcinoma and connection with EGFR mutation status; determine the frequency, type and connection of EGFR mutations with predominant type of adenocarcinoma and confirm whether bronchoscopic biopsy may be a representative specimen for the determination of EGFR mutation status. Histopathological material of lung adenocarcinoma in surgical specimens is more heterogeneous in relation to biopsy specimens and such difference is statistically significant (p<0,001). Acinar predominant type is the most common in surgical and biopsy specimens with no statistically significant differences in the distribution of predominant type among them (p=0,65883). The predominant type in the primary tumor determines the predominant type in lymphatic metastases. EGFR mutations in the type of insertions on exon 21 and L858R mutations on exon 20 have been detected in three out of 60 (5%) of patients in five out of 120 specimens (three surgical and two biopsy samples), more often in women older than 60, smokers and in a solid predominant type. There are no statistically significant differences in the concentration of isolated DNA between EGFR mutated and wt EGFR adenocarcinoma in biopsy (p=0,132) and surgical specimens (p=0,641). The percentage of invalid results in determining the EGFR mutation status is higher in biopsy specimens compared to the surgical specimens. There is a statistically significant difference between the number of TTF-1 positive and TTF-1 negative adenocarcinoma (p<0,001), but not in the distribution of these patients according to gender (p=0,1231), average age, smoking habits (p=0,6488) and average tumor size (p-0,21). There is a positive correlation between TTF-1 positive expression and EGFR mutation status and therefore TTF-1 positive expression can be a predictor of positive EGFR mutation status. Bronchoscopic biopsy is a representative sample for the determination of EGFR mutation status because: most diagnostic biopsy specimens have more than 100 preserved tumor cells, there is no difference in the distribution of predominant types in relation to surgical specimens, EGFR mutations are detected in samples with less than 100 tumor cells and less than 20% of volume density of tumor tissue, the difference between the concentration of isolated DNA in EGFR mutated and wt EGFR adenocarcinoma in biopsy and surgical specimens is not statistically significant (p=0,132 and p=0,641).

Abstract:
The interest of this PhD-thesis originates from the conjunction of two important questions, the first one being that of representation of Africans in literature - and especially in travel literature and in photos. The thesis aims to show that the representation of the "other" is not always as fixed and as clear as one might think. Parting from different theories of the perception of the "other", we aim to show that the representation of the "other" in these illustrated travel books is very often ambiguous. The second is a question of communication and deals with the combined usage of different types of media (text, photographs, drawings, layout, peritexte (Gérard Genette). It originates thus from intermediality. The work aims to clarify the role of these different types of media in respect to the representation of Africans. Does the combination of these different types of media draw a picture of Africans which is different from that depicted in the text or in the image on its own? It is interesting to look at the added value which might be achieved by the combination of these elements. Does the added value arise from newly created dimensions which could not have been achieved by any one form of media on their own?

Abstract:
Karcinom pluća predstavlja vodeći uzrok smrtnosti među svim malignim obolenjima, a uprkos dostignućima u dijagnostici i terapiji u poslednjih 30 godina nije došlo do bitnog poboljšanja izuzetno niske ukupne stope petogodišnjeg preživljavanja kod ovih pacijenata. Urađeno je poređenje manuelne i volumetrijske procene terapijskog odgovora primenom razičitih ispitivanih sistema klasifikacije uz utvrđivanje stepena različite klasifikacije i analizu preživljavanja pacijenata do pojave progresije bolesti.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of mortality among all malignancies, and despite advances in diagnostics and therapy over the past 30 years, there has been no significant improvement in the extremely low overall rate of a five-year survival with these patients. At the time of the diagnosis, more than a third of all newly discovered cases are at the IV stage of the disease. Precise and adequate monitoring of the response of the tumor to therapeutic treatment with lung cancer patients in IV stage, as well as the early detection of progression of the disease or inefficiency of therapy in this group of patients is of great importance as chemotherapy is the only therapeutic option for these patients. The existing conventional methods of one-dimensional measurement and assessment of tumor response to therapeutic treatment according to RECIST criteria do not use all the advantages of CT diagnostics and rely on the subjectivity of manual measurements. Advanced radiological techniques, such as volumetry, can contribute to the development of the image monitoring of the therapeutic response of tumors in patients with lung cancer. The aim of this study is to evaluate the application of one-dimensional and volumetric measurement in the assessment of the therapeutic response to lung cancer with multslice computerized tomography. Methodology: A study per type of prospective study included 100 patients with lung cancer at the IV stage of the disease at the time of detection, which were tested in the period between 2013 and 2016 at the Institute of Pulmonary Diseases of Vojvodina in Sremska Kamenica and met the criteria for entering the study. With all patients involved in the study, two radiologists independently assessed all CT chest exams, performed one-dimensional manual and volumetric measurements of selected target lesions, which enabled the determination of intraobserver and interobserver variability and the agreement of the target lesion measurement results using the test method. Based on the results of the performed measurements, the categorization of the therapeutic response of the tumor with conventional RECIST criteria, as well as the application of a modified categorization system for volumetric assessment of the therapeutic response with modified optimal limit values for classification (progression of the disease and positive response to the therapy) was performed, calculated on the basis of the tested sample. Comparison of manual and volumetric estimates of the therapeutic response was made using various classification systems with the determination of the degree of difference in classification and analysis of survival of patients until the progression of the disease. The influence of morphological characteristics of target lesions on the results of volumetric measurement was determined by the analysis of the deviation of the measured tumor volume relative to the arithmetic mean between the groups of lesions of the examined morphological characteristics. Results: The application of volumetric measurements on the test sample leads to a lower rate of variability in the results of measuring the dimensions of the target lesions compared to the conventional manual measurement method, and in the case of interobserver variability (0.9% versus 6.5%) and in terms of intraobserver variability (4.9% to 0.9%). The volumetric assessment of the therapeutic response of the tumor using modified boundary categorization values (3Dindividual model) results in a significantly different classification of the therapeutic response in relation to the use of conventional RECIST criteria. In the case of volumetric assessment of the therapeutic response, the classification of patients using the new “3D-individual” categorization system leads to a misclassification in 22.2% of cases compared to RECIST equivalent to volumetric criteria, reflecting the equally good predictability of PFS in these two systems. The results of the study showed that the appearance of the lesion margins and relation to the surrounding anatomical structures influenced the variability of the results of volumetric measurements. Conclusion: The application of volumetric measurements as a new aspect of the morphological evaluation of lung cancer response to applied therapies can help in making therapeutic decisions both in the treatment of individual patients and in the conduct of clinical trials.

In recent years, commercial cotton lint have been developed with better quality, presenting different characteristics, but with similar coloring. This can be a problem because these samples is identified, large-scale, performed by a visual inspection, which is a very subjective method and error prone. Another way available for classification of samples is the use of HVI system (High Volume Instruments) to determine physical quality parameters. However, this apparatus has a high cost when compared to digital imaging technique, furthermore has the need for adequate infrastructure and a trained analyst for analysis procedure. This work proposes the development of a novel analytical method based on the use of digital image and multivariate analysis to (1) naturally colored cotton plumes classification according to the type of cultivar and (2) simultaneous determination of degree of yellowness (+b), reflectance (Rd) and wax content (WAX). The acquisition of digital images of cotton lints was carried out through a webcam and histograms containing distributions in levels of colors in standard RGB (red-green-blue), grayscale and HSV system (hue-saturation-value) they were obtained. In the classification of samples, models based discriminant analysis by partial least squares (PLS-DA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) with variable selection by the successive projections algorithm (SPA) or stepwise (SW) were evaluated. For the determination of the parameters +b, Rd and WAX, PLS models and multiple linear regression (MLR) with variable selection by the SPA were developed and compared. The best classification results were obtained with LDA / SW model with a correct classification rate (TCC) of 96% for the test group using the HSV combination. As the calibration methods, satisfactory prediction results were obtained for both models (PLS and MLR-SPA) with values of RMSEP near repeatability of the reference method. Furthermore, no systematic error was observed and there were no significant differences between the predicted values and reference, according to a paired t-test at 95% confidence. As advantages of the method is simple, low cost, does not use reagent, does not destroy the sample and realizes analysis at short time intervals.

Abstract:
The intensity at which soils provide ecosystem services are function of soil properties that permanently evolved according to numerous processes. Lessivage and bioturbation are of crucial importance as they imply the clay size fraction but are still poorly characterized. This study aims at i) developing a digital 2D image analysis method to quantify both processes intensity, ii) quantifying the effect of two centuries of continuous cultivation and of a decade of organic amendments spreading on their intensity, and iii) characterizing their dynamics. We succeeded in quantifying those processes by carefully considering different levels of soil organization while combining a colorimetric and a textural approach. The percentage volume of worm-worked soil since 10 000 to 15 000 years is 65% at 40 cm depth and between 20 and 30% at 150 cm depth that corresponds to a soil mass flow of 6 500 t.ha-1, i.e. 1 700 t.ha-1 of clay size fraction. Illuviation is responsible for a clay size fraction mass flow of 1 100 t.ha-1. On a time scale as short as two centuries, cultivation was found to induce i) a change of the soil poral network characteristics until 1 meter depth, ii) a modification of the structure of the worm-worked soil volume, and finally iii) an increase of the lessivage intensity. A decade of organic matter spreading tended to lower the intensity of lessivage. Finally, our study points out the fact that soils are highly reactive and that our method may be particularly helpful to predict soil evolution while facing climate change among others

Abstract:
Self-renewal and pluripotency are the two major hallmarks of embryonic stem cells (ESC). Since ESC were first isolated in culture, one of the big challenges has been the maintenance of their pluripotency in vitro. ESC cultures require specific factors, which are responsible for the activation of pluripotency pathways and inhibition of differentiation pathways. A plethora of biochemical and mechanical modulators have been shown to individually affect the pluripotency state. However, how these different modulators work together to determine the pluripotency/differentiation state of ESC remains to be established. The work developed in this thesis aimed at uncoupling the biochemical and mechanical modulators effect in ESC fate. To understand how different modulators regulate pluripotency, the ESC gene expression was evaluated upon the effect of different biochemical modulators – leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) and mitochondria respiratory chain modulators – and mechanical modulators – substrate stiffness. First, multiple combinations of the different stimuli were performed. Then, the effect of each modulator in ESC gene expression and the inter-relationship between paired modulators was determined. As expected, when two modulators were combined, ESC gene expression changed. Nevertheless, the magnitude of LIF effect (- LIF vs. + LIF) was dependent on mitochondria respiratory chain inhibitor Antimycin A (AA). However, it was independent of the indirect activation of oxidative phosphorylation through galactose. Interestingly, the magnitude of mitochondria respiratory chain modulators effect was dependent on the presence of LIF. Unexpectedly, the magnitude of stiffness effect (stiff substrates vs. soft substrates) in gene expression was not dependent on any biochemical pluripotent modulator tested. These results suggest that stiffness and biochemical modulators regulate ESC pluripotency through non-interfering pathways, where stiffness is a key modulator in the regulation of ESC fate. Challenged by the common heterogeneity of ESC culture, the increase of image-based-assays to evaluate pluripotency, and the lack of image analysis approaches available to automatically quantify pluripotency, we developed an open-source software, Pluri-IQ, to quantify ESC pluripotency in culture. Pluri-IQ was designed to automatic segment ESC colonies in both phase-contrast and fluorescence images, with high precision. With a low user input required, Pluri-IQ was able to quantify the percentage of pluripotent, mixed and differentiated colonies after alkaline-phosphatase, or pluripotent antibodies staining assays. Moreover, it was capable to analyze single or multiple low magnification images, with an accuracy around 90%. In summary, the results presented in this thesis identify the stiffness as a key role in ESC fate, working independently of biochemical pluripotent cues. In addition, a new free-software for ESC image quantification was developed, which has the potential to be routinely used, increasing unbiased data acquisition and reproducibility.

Abstract:
In many of his political writings, Carl Schmitt seeks to render conflict and struggle visible and recognizable. He wages a metapolitical struggle against depoliticizing types of spirit and for the political. The meaning of history, as this chapter shows, is a crucial terrain for this metapolitical struggle: friends and enemies are symbolized and rendered (in)visible through historical discourses. The analysis demonstrates that Schmitt strongly rejects representations of history that tend to obfuscate its political nature, such as ideologies of progress or the idea of repetition in history. Instead, he advocates a sober and profane image of history, acknowledging its plural and contingent nature. Paradoxically, a figure of theological provenance, the katechon, is the minimal rest of an eschatological vision that Schmitt considers necessary to keep history and theology apart and to maintain an open and profane understanding of history.

Abstract:
The Qurʾan and Late Antiquity: A Shared Heritage, the culminating summary of the work of the most prominent German scholar of the Qurʾan, provides an original introduction to the Qurʾan against the background of the plural religious and literary cultures of Late Antiquity. In order to bridge the polarity between understandings of the Qurʾan in the Islamic world and the West, the work offers a critical introduction to the study of the Qurʾan within Western scholarship, before employing a range of philological and historical methods to present a critical image of the history of the text’s emergence, redaction, and earliest “setting in life” within the community. Setting out and upholding a chronological understanding of the stages of the “proclamation” represented by the final, canonized text, Neuwirth sets forth an original philologically and historically informed reading of the text. This entails a detailed description of the stages of “communal formation” detectable behind the canonized text, as well as an exploration of the emergence of patterns of communal liturgy and ritual-textual practices reflected in the literary forms of the suras. The process of the text’s historical emergence is set carefully against the background of the other scriptural traditions into which it inscribes itself, and the relationships between the Koran and the text corpora of the Old and New Testaments, as well as to ancient Arabic poetry, are given detailed and original treatment. No work of this kind exists now in English: both thoroughly and critically aware of the body of Western research on the Koran, and based on a thorough and historically informed literary reading of the Koranic text.

Abstract:
Beginning at least with Bach (1986), semanticists have suggested that objects are formally parallel to events in the way substances are formally parallel to processes. This chapter investigates whether these parallels can be understood to reflect a shared representational format in cognition, which underlies aspects of the intuitive metaphysics of these categories. The authors of this chapter hypothesized that a way of counting (atomicity) is necessary for object and event representations, unlike for substance or process representations. Atomicity is strongly implied by plural but not mass language. The chapter investigates the language–perception interface across these domains using minimally different images and animations, designed either to encourage atomicity (‘natural’ breaks) or to discourage it (‘unnatural’ breaks). The experiments test preference for naming such stimuli with mass or count syntax. The results support Bach’s analogy in perception and highlight the formal role of atomicity in object and event representation.

This chapter examines how William Kentridge develops his investigation of Plato’s allegory in More Sweetly Play the Dance (2015), unravelling it and testing the limits of his commitment to it. It is proposed that Kentridge’s use of pre-cinematic techniques to conceal the image and keep it at a distance reflects Jean-Luc Nancy’s understanding of the image as distanced and separate. Nancean thinking can work in conjunction with the artist’s imagery and conceptual logic because it considers the personal and corporeal in conjunction with community and commonality, in other words, how we coexist in the world. The Nancean singular plural is visualised in Kentridge’s winding procession in which singular and plural coexist in a spaced intimacy.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the ways in which visual representations both succeeded and failed as instruments of knowledge. It opens with an account of a dissertation about methods of learning with mnemonic printed images that appeared in a revised edition in 1731 and was authored by Siegmund Jacob Apin (1693–1732). The first part of this treatise refers to key pedagogical visual representations of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including the works of Jan Amos Comenius (1592–1670), Johannes Buno (1617–1697), Andreas Vesalius (1514–1564), and Leonard Fuchs (1501–1566). Among the philosophical prints discussed by Apin are the illustrated thesis prints of Meurisse, Chéron, and Gaultier. In the second part of the dissertation, Apin presents criticisms of mnemonic images. Apin's dissertation allows us to appreciate both the early modern interest in epistemological visual representations and some of the reasons for the demise of the philosophical plural image over the course of the 1700s.

Abstract:
Challenging the epic nationalist academic framework built around tropes of national origins, colonial emancipation, and independence, this study looks at the early articulation of alternate definitions of Hispanicity and of Spain’s wrestling role within its cultural and economic colonial network. At stake here is the instability between Spain as a signifier and its plural signifieds: through the many issues of “el Español,” José Blanco White sought to resignify “lo español” ie Spanishness as a plural Transatlantic network of cultural connections through the image of a decentralized confederation, a full enfranchisement of criollos, and a questioning of colonial logics which included a refutation of slavery and of peninsular preeminence. Poet and propagandist Juan Bautista Arriaza, by contrast, mobilized a series of tropes (metaphors, allegories, hyperboles) which signified Spain as uniquely peninsular, and redefined Creole agency as subaltern and peripheral, thus reinstating a Eurocentric colonial agenda at a time when the metropolitan Bourbon state had been entirely overwhelmed. The theoretical shift of a postnational Transatlantic Studies with its emphasis on circulation and transit – its inherent challenge of the national epistemic frame – recasts this debate no in nationalist terms but historically within the new network of neocolonial cultural and commercial flows where London had become a prominent metropolis.

The chapter shows how Socrates becomes the crucial figure that Hannah Arendt turns to, against Plato, for thinking the human as rooted in plurality and attesting to both action and thought. As a positive split image of Plato’s negativity, Socrates is singled out in the context of interrogations that cross Arendt’s entire work about radical evil and, later, about the banality of evil. Socrates works as an antidote to both: radical evil because his practice of dialogue is a political practice that calls on politics as a shared space of plural interaction; and the banality of evil because, by assuming thinking as an activity consisting in the internal questioning of oneself, Socrates discovers conscience as the source of ethical judgment.

Abstract:
This concluding chapter argues that, during the Cold War, countries in the Global South had played the superpowers off each other, achieving almost unchecked aid during decolonization—but this approach no longer worked. Economists and social scientists attacked the Cold War, claiming that the aid distributed then, while abundant, had been distorted by politics, with negative consequences for national economies. Cold War aid, they said, fostered inefficient distribution, thwarted institutional development in newly independent countries, propped up failed states, and nourished civil wars with weapons and ideology. The book reveals development's many expectations other than humanitarian motives: political loyalty, broader markets, and personal or group legitimacy. It also recounts a plural history, seeing the global history of development as made up of projects with worldwide aspirations but clearly framed for national purposes and within regional dimensions. The image of development as a single design, the concretization of a hegemonic view, a global faith, a center around which global polity is organized, is a simplified representation.

Abstract:
Lawrence's mentor Edward Garnett, who had brokered publication with Duckworth, cut the manuscript by about ten per cent. This weakened the role of Paul's brother William, which justifies the plural of the title and reinforces the thematic emphasis on Oedipal relationships. The complete text was eventually restored by Cambridge University Press in 1992. In March 1913 Lawrence sent Jessie the proofs with an accompanying letter. She returned the letter, the final act of their association. She had written an autobiographical novel of her own, The Rathe Primrose, which Lawrence read and admired, but which she subsequently destroyed, together with all his letters to her. Despite this she retained a detailed memory of what he had written, with the result that her remembered versions are printed in the Letters of D.H. Lawrence. After his death she wrote a vivid and deeply moving memoir, D.H. Lawrence, A Personal Record. We owe to her an unforgettable image of the delightful young genius she had loved, but she had little sympathy for the great and conflicted writer that he became. Sons and Lovers was published in May 1913 to largely favourable reviews.

Abstract:
In order to clarify the destruction mechanism of large structures in large seismic movements, a non-contacting displacement measurement system with a three-dimensional dynamic position with high precision is required. We have developed a three-dimensional measuring system with image processing using optical motion capture technology. This system consists of light emitting markers installed on the object structure and plural high speed cameras which obtain images of markers’ movement simultaneously, to measure the dynamic position of the three dimensional spatial coordinates of the markers. In order to measure the dynamic position with high precision, we have ever developed sub-pixel processing method which is able to measure very small displacements of the markers by analyzing the luminance distribution. Moreover, we have developed a new marker of spherical surface emission type which formed the luminance profile to improve furthermore the accuracy in rotational movement. Shaking tests were carried out with this measuring system and the results indicated that this system using new markers had sufficient accuracy within errors of a few millimeters in the structure of a 4 meter cube. Consequently, we have acquired the potential to apply to the measurement to the 3-D Full Scale Earthquake Testing Facility (E-Defense).
