Abstract:
This article traces the pluralist politics at the heart of Clark Kerr's bookThe Uses of the Universityto the present-day politics of diversity. Pluralism was the dominant theory of American politics at midcentury, and Kerr was among its most admired spokespersons. First as a labor economist and strike negotiator, then as chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, and later as president of the University of California system, Kerr relied on “pluralistic decision-making” to harmonize relations among the multiversity's mix of vested interests. Shortly afterThe Uses of the Universitywas published in 1963, however, student protesters at Berkeley and at other multiversities like it let Kerr know that they had grown tired of the pluralist politics that he championed. Ironically, in their effort to upend the pluralist status quo and to make politics more participatory, campus insurgents sowed the seeds for the growth of a new brand of pluralist politics known as diversity. By uncovering the relationship between pluralism and diversity, this article reveals the enduring—and surprising—political legacy of Kerr's multiversity model 50 years after he unveiled it.

Abstract:
Gandhi's critique of the modern state was central to his political thinking. It served as a pivotal hinge between Gandhi's anticolonialism and his theory of politics and was given striking institutional form in his vision of decentralized peasant democracy. This essay explores the origins and implications of Gandhian antistatism by situating it within a genealogy of early twentieth-century political pluralism, specifically British and Indian pluralist criticism of state sovereignty and centralization. This essay traces that critique from the imperial sociology of Henry Sumner Maine, through the political theory of Harold Laski and G. D. H. Cole, to Radhakamal Mukerjee's reworking of these strands into a normative–universal model of Eastern pluralism. The essay concludes with a consideration of Gandhi's ideal of a stateless, nonviolent polity as a culmination and overturning of the pluralist tradition and as integral to his distinctive understanding of political freedom, rule, and action.

Abstract:
Kata-kata kunci: Apologetika, Prasuposisional, Triperspektivalisme, John M. Frame, Aplikasi, Pluralisme Agama Pluralism exhibits a new awareness that assumes that all beliefs have general similarity when compared one with another. As a result, there is no religion that can claim that it has the claim to ultimate truth when compared with a host of other options. Indonesia, as a pluralistic nation, exhibits the challenges of religious pluralism. Because of that reality, there are frameworks of Christian thought that have arisen that emphasize the similarity of several religions which erodes and ultimately eliminates the uniqueness of Christianity. However, Jesus Christ and his work of salvation is absolutely true and the other religions are false. This article will introduce an apologetic model that can be used to defend the uniqueness of the Christian faith among the challenges of religious pluralistic thought in Indonesia. John M. Frame’s triperspectivalism presuppositional apologetics is proferred and developed through constructive apologetics (normative), defensive apologetics (existential), and offensive apologetics (situational). Abstract:
This paper proposes a new method for distributing votes in democratic elections in such a way that allows for the public to put their trust in independent candidates or those from small political parties. Using the case of a party founded by the authors called The Pluralist Party the paper presents primary data to evaluate the effectiveness of the method – called delegated transferable voting (DTV). Using an auto-ethnographical empirical study in which one of the authors plays a significant role as anthropologist, the paper finds that DTV is more likely to lead to the election of independent candidates over party political ones. Pluralism advocates the election of those who are independent of political party whips in order to best represent the people. The election of independent candidates or small parties is a model of pluralism that can achieve this. The empirical study, through investigating the campaigning methods used by The Pluralist Party, shows that putting effort into an election – whether money, materials or labour and however funded – can improve outcomes for political parties. Making use of official government data in addition to the collected data showed that a higher number of votes for the Pluralist Party was associated with a higher education level, more rooms in a household, a lower number of people not in education, employment or training, and a lower ‘knol,' which is a unit for measuring brain activity.

Abstract:
In recent years, theorists of radical democracy have criticized the liberal pluralist model of politics, a model which views the political forum primarily as a space for bargaining and the aggregation of individual preferences. While conceding that some measure of bargaining and preference aggregation is probably an ineliminable feature of democratic politics, radical democrats have charged that this model underestimates or ignores the transformative effects of democratic political interaction. In particular, liberal pluralism does not allow for the possibility that democratic politics can generate new forms of solidarity, enhance personal freedom, and inculcate virtue.

Abstract:
Abstract Legal pluralism in former colonial territories, like South Africa, often involve the simultaneous existence of multiple marriage forms, distinguishing marital forms associated with former colonial systems from indigenous forms of marriage. These pluralist systems are not value-neutral but continue to favour marriages associated with colonial rules and processes. In addition, they create complicated distinctions between different forms of marriage which are thought to reflect the distinctive cultural or religious identities of those who marry according to these systems. This article argues for an alternative approach: the explicit recognition and encouragement of legal hybridisation as a strategy for disrupting colonial identities and hierarchies which recognises and values the historical and contemporary processes of hybridisation in the law and social practices. It uses the metaphors of the language politics around Afrikaans to describe a rigid form of pluralism based on claims of authentic identity on the one hand, and of isishweshwe, a colourful cotton fabric, which represents the resilience, vitality, and creative exchange which characterises hybridity and which promises to address gender and racial inequality inherent in the current model.

Truscott, Philip. "A pluralist model of tax-benefit policy." Thesis, University of Surrey, 1989. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/848134/.

Full text
Abstract:
In order for a pluralist democracy to function well it is necessary that the means to bring forward policy proposals should be dispersed widely among a variety of political parties, pressure groups, and institutions. The goal of this thesis is to define and solve the problems of creating a computer model of tax-benefit policy suitable for a pluralist society. Computer modelling of tax-benefit policies poses two serious problems. Firstly, can such computer models be sufficiently easy to use so that non-experts can use them without the need for computer specialists? Secondly, can they be flexible enough so that truly innovative policies can be simulated, or must the user be restricted to a narrow set of policy options? The first section of the thesis defines the major dilemmas involved in creating a tax-benefit model. Chapter 1 outlines the problems inherent in solving the aforesaid problems of usability and flexibility. Chapter 2 shows how far these problems have been solved already by describing the features of eleven existing models of the British tax-benefit system. The second section of the thesis examines the store of knowledge on which an ideal tax-benefit model should be based. Chapter 3 discusses the various principles which have been advanced as yardsticks by which to measure tax-benefit policy. Chapter 4 examines four case histories of major changes to the tax- benefit system in the past. Chapter 5 makes a detailed examination of the form of behavioural response to tax-benefit policy which has been most frequently explored by policy researchers : the extent to which work incentives are affected by tax-benefit policy. The third section describes the characteristics of a new computer model and a new computer language which have been constructed for this thesis which attempt to deal with the problems of tax-benefit modelling in a pluralist society. Chapter 6 outlines the general features of the data, the new computer language, the Policy Simulation Language, and the new model the Policy Option Model which have been created. Chapter 7 gives a detailed explanation of how the features of the Policy Simulation Language and the Policy Option Model have been implemented. Chapter 8 describes the characteristics of the Policy Option Model's user interface. Chapter 9 gives examples of the output from the Policy Option Model. In order to collect the data for chapter 10 the Policy Option Model was demonstrated to a number of people in the field of tax-benefit modelling who use other models. Chapter 10 contains a selection of the comments of these people after these demonstrations. Chapter 11 outlines possible future developments of the Policy Option Model and discusses the extent to which it has succeeded in solving the problems of tax-benefit modelling in a pluralist society.

Abstract:
Abstract May the Real Surrogate Stand-Up: A Pluralist Critique of the Shared Decision-Making Model in Neonatal Intensive Care In the fast-paced environment of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), decisions about the health care of newborns involve multiple - and sometimes competing - normative forces. Informed by critical legal pluralism, this thesis offers an analysis of the normative interactions that emerge when parents and health care professionals meet at the bedside of a critically ill newborn. Using the shared decision-making model favored by the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) in its 2004 position statement on treatment decisions regarding infant, children and adolescents, I claim that in the NICU context consent is not sought in cases of medical certainty, where the best interest of the patient has already been ascertained according to medical norms. Consequently, the "shared" component of decision-making occurs only after the cause for decision-making has been determined by the child's health care team and presented to the child's surrogate decision-makers. Using ethnographic studies on the lived experience of parents in NICU, I question the marked difference between the authority given to parents by Canadian legal and medical guidelines and the authority they are allowed to exercise in fact at their child's bedside. I conclude by a critical reflection on the emergence of plural law in the NICU trough dynamics of parental resistance or conformity to accepted medical norms.

The present research focused on answering the following problem question: what are the limitations found in the PNH evaluation model proposed by Santos-Filho (2014) as a starting point for local efficiency and specificities? Thus, the overall objective of the study was to elaborate for the Hospital and Maternity Dona Iris an evaluation model for the HNP, focusing on humanization in the context of the Stork Network, adding participatory elements and starting with the strategic axes of monitoring and evaluation proposed by Santos-Filho (2014), the principle of efficiency and local specificities. The methodology used can be classified as applied, descriptive, with a qualitative approach and with regard to procedures such as case study. Crossing the methodological path of pluralistic perspective, interviews were conducted with 40 pregnant women, 13 health professionals and 2 managers. The main results identified in the diagnosis were: the maternity does not carry out local assessments with a view to measuring the humanization in the context of the Stork Network; the demand for vacancies and services extrapolates the delivery capacity of maternity services, impacting on the quality of care and the humanization both for patients and for health professionals; the waiting time for care is the main negative aspect posed by pregnant women and good care is the main positive aspect mentioned; transparency, one of the values that make up the organizational identity of motherhood, has not been applied to content, since production and financial reports are outdated in electronic websites; and health professionals do not realize that humanization in HMDI applies to them. Based on the diagnosis, a proposal for an evaluation model for HNP was prepared in the context of the Stork Network containing a list of indicators, variables and keywords for each evaluation axis; a technical sheet for describing indicators; a script for interview with users and health professionals; and a list of criteria to be analyzed in the direct observation of the health professionals' performance. The study is limited because it is a case study in which its findings, in principle, can’t be generalized, requiring new studies in other maternities to assertively verify the possibility of replication of the model throughout the network. maternal and child health in the city of Goiânia.

Abstract:
Understanding and managing change is a strategic objective for many organisations to successfully compete in a market place; as a result, organisations are leveraging their data asset and implementing data warehouses to gain business intelligence necessary to improve their businesses. Data warehouses are expensive initiatives, one-half to two-thirds of most data warehousing efforts end in failure. In the absence of well-formalised design methodology in the industry and in the context of the debate on data architecture in data warehousing, this thesis examines why multidimensional and relational data models define the data architecture landscape in the industry. The study develops a number of propositions from the literature and empirical data to understand the factors impacting the choice of logical data model in data warehousing. Using a comparative case study method as the mean of collecting empirical data from the case organisations, the research proposes a conceptual model for logical data model adoption. The model provides a framework that guides decision making for adopting a logical data model for a data warehouse. The research conceptual model identifies the characteristics of business requirements and decision pathways for multidimensional and relational data warehouses. The conceptual model adds value by identifying the business requirements which a multidimensional and relational logical data model is empirically applicable.

What are the logics that public organizations enact in their daily activities? This doctoral dissertation investigated the institutional logics of the State. The institutional logic concept adopted was the one of Friedland and colleagues: institutional logics are 'stable constellations of practice', the necessary coupling of substances and material practices that constitutes the institutions’ organizing principles (Friedland et.al., 2014). The State is understood as one of the central institutions of society, composed by two dimensions. One is the bureaucratic dimension, permeated by different ideas about how things should be done in the State. The other is the capitalist dimension, permeated by different ideas about what should be done,i.e., what should be the role of the State. I have chosen a specific type of public organization to explore the logic of the State: the Brazilian independent regulatory agencies (IRAs). IRAs have diffused widely in the past years, and the literature suggests that they represent the 'appropriate model of governance' of the capitalist economy (Levi-Faur, 2005). They changed both how things were done - emphasizing the state's rule-making instruments - and what should be done - focusing on competition promotion and correcting market failures (Majone, 1994). In Brazil, IRAs were part of a broader process of State Reform, and represented an important innovation in terms of organizational design, based on autonomy, and role to be performed, based on competition promotion. However, the process of IRAs’ diffusion was largely impacted by the local context and despite being idealized as purely regulatory, their policies and activities indicate that they do much more than promoting competition. In fact, state policies in general, and regulatory policies in particular, 'are rooted in changing conceptions of what the state is, what it can and should do' (Friedland & Alford, 1991). To assess the institutional logics of the State, this research investigated over 9,000 press releases published by three formal independent regulatory agencies in Brazil between 2002 and 2016. Those press releases cover all the news they released since their creation. Press releases are frequently used by Brazilian IRAs, and they serve as a good proxy of the policies and activities conducted by these agencies. I applied a correlated topic model (CTM) to extract the main themes discussed by the agencies in the past years. Originating from the study areas of natural language processing and machine learning, topic models are probabilistic models that uncover the semantic structure of a collection of documents, or corpus (Blei, 2012; Blei, Ng & Jordan, 2003). Differently from other content analysis techniques, topic models are purely inductive and conform to the ‘relationality’ of meaning assumption of the institutional logics literature (DiMaggio, Nag & Blei, 2013). The results indicated that the logics enacted by independent agencies do not refer only to procedural correctness (Meyer & Hammerschmid, 2006) or democracy (Ocasio, Mauskapf & Steele, 2015). In fact, much of what they do is grounded on broader substantive values, reflecting developmental-, pro-competition- and social-oriented interpretations of the role of the State. Yet, the bureaucratic logic is very pervasive within IRAs: it permeates substantive logics, but also it stands up as a logic of its own. Regulatory agencies enact it more often when they are not able to perform their substantive mission. IRAs re-frame at their discretion the practices of administrative police (standards setting and inspections) and public participation (procedural fairness) during periods of crisis, in order to justify their actions. By doing so, they were able to legitimate their existence, gain a new sense of mission and avoid blame for their actions.

Pluralism, the variety of philosophical, moral, cultural and religious worldviews of contemporary society, is a characteristic of Western democracies. This places upon such societies a great challenge for the teaching of moral principles in schools and for the establishment of such principles in the public sphere. John Rawls's political idea of an overlapping consensus is a principle of decision-making that can be used as a model for arriving at principles for moral education and also as a model for moral deliberation in the public domain. Multicultural narratives can play an important role in enhancing the creation of an overlapping consensus on public moral issues in pluralistic societies. They can be examples of the kinds of challenges involved in the moral decision process and also serve to illustrate the importance of moral perception as a complement to moral reflection in the task of moral deliberation. Teaching the multicultural nature of modern civilization and also the universal incidence of the democratic council tradition can strengthen citizens' sense of mutual respect in the course of public speech. This can help to develop a culture that is more open to the formation of an overlapping consensus on matters that concern public morality.

Abstract:
Abstract Context: DevOps is an increasingly popular approach to software development and software operations. Being understood as mutually integrated, both activities have been re-united under one single label. In contrast to traditional software development activities, DevOps promotes numerous fundamental changes, and the area of software testing is not an exception. Yet, the exact appearance of software testing within DevOps is poorly understood, so is the notion of TestOps. Objective: This paper explores TestOps as a concept rooted in industrial practice. Method: To provide a pluralist outline of practitioners’ views on What is TestOps, the YouTube platform was searched for digital content containing either “TestOps” or “DevTestOps” in the content title. Through a qualitative lens, the resulting set was systematically annotated and thematically analyzed in an inductive manner. Results: Referring to DevOps, practitioners use the notion of TestOps when characterizing a conceptual shift that occurs within the area of software testing. As a matter of fact, two dominant categories were found in the data: (i) TestOps as a new organizational philosophy; (ii) TestOps as an innovative software technique (i.e. process supported by technology). A set of high-level themes within each of these categories was identified and described. Conclusion: The study outlines an inconsistency in practitioner perspectives on the nature of TestOps. To decrease the identified conceptual ambiguity, the proposed model posits two complementary meanings of TestOps.

Abstract:
With the society and economy of China entering the transition period, people's requirements for urban life show a trend of diversification and high standards. Urban design is no longer limited to physical space but starts to carry out multi-angle and multi-level comprehensive consideration on the social and spatial problems of symbiosis. In this context, the innovative social governance and the quality improvement of urban public space that highlights the role of the public have become hot topics. As the main body of city users, ordinary people entering into the deep and substantial participation from the superficial and symbolic is the only way for urban design to transform from the expert-led "optimal scheme" to the "reasonable scheme" recognized by pluralistic bodies. In the process of western democratic politics, the participation theory that focuses on the construction of micro democracy is prevalent, and the public participation based on pluralism has become the theoretical basis for the planning participation. Besides, the concept of communicative planning and collaborative planning, which emphasize cooperation and consultation, also enriches the connotation of multiple participation. Due to different systems and awareness, it is difficult to promote public participation under China's national conditions. Community building, the interdisciplinary product of urban design and social governance under communities, is regarded as the experimental field for participating in the reform. Therefore, under the current administrative system and regulations, this paper tries to make use of the grass-roots management mode with Chinese characteristics to establish an inclusive multi-participation mechanism. It allows residents of different ages can go deep into the process of community building by taking the family unit. Meanwhile, some suggestions and strategies are raised for effective participation. We hope the bottom-up process of urban design in microscale can be an effective instrument to reflect the public's will and repair social relations at the same time, while explore and solve urban problems in diverse cooperation.

Abstract:
We consider the election control problem in social networks which consists in exploiting social influence in a network of voters to change their opinion about a target candidate with the aim of increasing his chances to win (constructive control) or lose (destructive control) the election. Previous works on this problem focus on plurality voting systems and on a influence model in which the opinion of the voters about the target candidate can only change by shifting its ranking by one position, regardless of the amount of influence that a voter receives. We introduce Linear Threshold Ranking, a natural extension of Linear Threshold Model, which models the change of opinions taking into account the amount of exercised influence. In this general model, we are able to approximate the maximum score that a target candidate can achieve up to a factor of 1-1/e by showing submodularity of the objective function. We exploit this result to provide a 1/3(1-1/e)-approximation algorithm for the constructive election control problem and a 1/2(1-1/e)-approximation ratio in the destructive scenario. The algorithm can be used in arbitrary scoring rule voting systems, including plurality rule and borda count.

Abstract:
To be successful in one’s profession, an engineer operating in the contemporary globalized world needs to be adequately equipped with suitable management skills. They include talent to plan, implement and manage engineering projects in diverse and pluralistic teams, ability to communicate at different levels, perseverance in the face of failures and crisis, creativeness to improvise innovative solutions, maintenance of physical and mental health, ability to invent and implement eco-friendly engineering solutions, and smartness to work within stipulated time-frames, etc. Large residential student communities prepare suitable context for engineering students to nurture their general management skills, if carefully planned. In the current paper, we present some innovative models and appropriate methods to convert large residential student communities into an arena where students can train themselves in general management skills. It also presents some results of two years of implementation of such methods in a men’s hostel, which accommodates youngsters between 17–19 years of age in their first year of undergraduate engineering study.

Abstract:
Although current rapid prototyping methods have had a significant impact on product and process design, they are often limited in both accuracy and choice of suitable materials. Also, the current methods share little similarity to typical manufacturing processes. In this paper, a method for using CNC machining as a Rapid Prototyping process is described in order to exploit the creation of functional prototypes in a wide array of materials. The method uses a plurality of simple 2 1/2-D toolpaths from various orientations about an axis of rotation, in order to machine the entire surface of a part without refixturing. It is our goal to automatically create these tool paths for machining, and eliminate the complex planning traditionally associated with CNC machining. The current approach to process planning involves calculating all the necessary data from the slice information of an STL model. An overview of the CNC-RP process and the process planning methodology is presented.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents the results of a modal decomposition method applied to the time resolved data of two different test turbines. The analysis is carried out on the measurements performed by fast response aerodynamic pressure probes as well as on CFD simulations. As shown in the earlier aeroacoustic theory, a plurality of rotating patterns, also called spinning modes, are generated by the rotor-stator interactions. The modes may be computed from the flow quantities, such as total pressure, velocity and flow angles, through Fourier decompositions performed in time and space. The deterministic unsteadiness is then simplified to a limited number of Fourier coefficients. At a fixed radial position, circumferential lobes are identified for any multiple of the blade passing frequency. Therefore, the flow may be described as the superposition of rotating patterns, the spatial characteristics of which are correlated to the linear combinations of blade/vane number. This analysis has been applied to a one and a half stage low pressure turbine and to a two-stage counter-rotating transonic turbine. In the former test case there is a limited number of modes that characterize the flow field. Hence, the decomposition in modes simplifies considerably the evaluation of the sources of unsteadiness and deterministic stresses. The second test case presents more complex interactions. In fact, the presence of two rotors induces oscillations at frequencies that corresponds to the linear combinations of the two blade passing frequencies. Circumferential modes are identified for the most characteristic frequencies and their physical meaning is discussed.

"Engine Performance Prediction for Varied LPT Vane Geometry Utilizing Test Rig Data and Combined CFD and Cycle Models." In ASME Turbo Expo 2012: Turbine Technical Conference and Exposition. Full text
Abstract:
Engine performance is a result of the interaction between individual components. Any deviation from the design geometry does not only affect the flow locally, but can also lead to significantly altered whole engine performance. Specifically for Low Pressure Turbine (LPT) vanes, erosion and subsequent refurbishment can lead to considerable changes in geometry. Following vane refurbishment, the part’s effective flow area may be measured and adjusted to meet turbine nozzle matching requirements for the engine build. Other parameters such as pressure loss and outlet flow angle are not evaluated, but rather assumed equivalent to a new part. Consequently, a large portion of vanes is rejected only after engine test, making it an expensive process. A new methodology is presented here that promises to reduce the cost of acceptance tests by predicting the performance of an engine with a refurbished vane. It follows a multi-fidelity approach involving experimental testing, zero-dimensional cycle modeling and three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Baseline performance maps of the LPT stage with varied vane geometries are generated using CFD. The obtained performance maps are incorporated into an engine cycle model. A multiple map feature for the cycle model was developed for this purpose. It enables accessing a plurality of stored maps representing a single LPT. Using performance parameters derived from test data of the isolated vane, a performance map is generated through interpolation of the baseline maps. The expected engine performance can now be readily predicted, and a well-founded decision on acceptance of the refurbished vane made.

Abstract:
Use of the digital technologies is new and very productive approach for balance of different data. It is very important for balance of supply and demand and for increase of competitiveness of products. Various types of digital models were developed as a result of scientific research, they found reflection in article. Digital models for the description of the list of the sequences of steps and operations of various stages and process in general allow to install system of interrelations between operations and steps and to reach necessary log-ic, increase of effectiveness of any process. Object-relational models for establishment of communications between data of various blocks of databases and functional models of the choice of strategy of data balance form analytical base for justification of the choice of the direction of transformation of data. Models of a combination of a plurality of various data of the offer of products in the form of matrixes of multi-purpose optimization have double effect, because they allow not only to develop various options of data combina-tion, taking into account opportunities of change of location of products over the markets and temporary phases, but also to estimate aggregate useful effect from products. These models together with models of comparison of various options and the choice of optimal solutions allow to generate compatible strategic and current programs of the offer of products as a plurality of the output data balanced with each other and with data of demand. It is providing the best synergetic result. The developed methodology of creation of system of the interconnected digital models for transformation of data and generation of the output data of the situational-strategic program of the offer of products is a cornerstone of formation of new digital econ-omy – of economy of balanced data.

Developing a good pro-pluralism religious education curriculum requires much planning and a deep understanding of the context. In a country like Iraq, where the education system is in decline due to years of conflict, weak governance and management, and a displacement crisis, this becomes a challenging task. This Learning Briefing, prepared during the implementation phase of the Coalition for Religious Equality and Inclusive Development (CREID) project to introduce reform to the religious education curriculum in Iraq, highlights the key areas of best practices and lessons learned from our stakeholder engagement. The aim is to share these learnings with programme managers, donors and partners to help inform future interventions and curricula development on effective approaches and models for improved quality education.

Crispin, Darla. Artistic Research as a Process of Unfolding. Norges Musikkhøgskole, August 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.22501/nmh-ar.503395.

Full text
Abstract:
As artistic research work in various disciplines and national contexts continues to develop, the diversity of approaches to the field becomes ever more apparent. This is to be welcomed, because it keeps alive ideas of plurality and complexity at a particular time in history when the gross oversimplifications and obfuscations of political discourses are compromising the nature of language itself, leading to what several commentators have already called ‘a post-truth’ world. In this brutal environment where ‘information’ is uncoupled from reality and validated only by how loudly and often it is voiced, the artist researcher has a responsibility that goes beyond the confines of our discipline to articulate the truth-content of his or her artistic practice. To do this, they must embrace daring and risk-taking, finding ways of communicating that flow against the current norms. In artistic research, the empathic communication of information and experience – and not merely the ‘verbally empathic’ – is a sign of research transferability, a marker for research content. But this, in some circles, is still a heretical point of view. Research, in its more traditional manifestations mistrusts empathy and individually-incarnated human experience; the researcher, although a sentient being in the world, is expected to behave dispassionately in their professional discourse, and with a distrust for insights that come primarily from instinct. For the construction of empathic systems in which to study and research, our structures still need to change. So, we need to work toward a new world (one that is still not our idea), a world that is symptomatic of what we might like artistic research to be. Risk is one of the elements that helps us to make the conceptual twist that turns subjective, reflexive experience into transpersonal, empathic communication and/or scientifically-viable modes of exchange. It gives us something to work with in engaging with debates because it means that something is at stake. To propose a space where such risks may be taken, I shall revisit Gillian Rose’s metaphor of ‘the fold’ that I analysed in the first Symposium presented by the Arne Nordheim Centre for Artistic Research (NordART) at the Norwegian Academy of Music in November 2015. I shall deepen the exploration of the process of ‘unfolding’, elaborating on my belief in its appropriateness for artistic research work; I shall further suggest that Rose’s metaphor provides a way to bridge some of the gaps of understanding that have already developed between those undertaking artistic research and those working in the more established music disciplines.
