Background: A large body of scientific literature derived from experimental studies emphasizes the vital role of vagal-nociceptive networks in acute pain processing. However, research on vagal activity, indexed by vagally-mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV) in chronic pain patients (CPPs), has not yet been summarized. Objectives: To systematically investigate differences in vagus nerve activity indexed by timeand frequency-domain measures of vmHRV in CPPs compared to healthy controls (HCs). Bletilla striata is a well-known traditional Chinese herb with anti-inflammatory properties that is widely used in the treatment of lung conditions such as silicosis, tuberculosis, and pneumogastric hemorrhage. However, little information on the anti-inflammatory ingredients and their activities is available. In this study, an effect fraction of Bletilla striata (EFBS) was enriched, and its anti-inflammatory activities and underlying mechanisms were investigated. EFBS was enriched by polyamide column chromatography and characterized by HPLC; an LPS-induced acute lung injury model was used to e

The hairy skin of the human body is the main receptor of fabric contact. In order to evaluate clothing comfort objectively, electroneurophysiological tests with nine subjects were carried out to determine their cognitive differences in fabric static and dynamic contact. Electroencephalography and electrocardiography signals were collected when the subjects statically and dynamically touched a piece of polyester fabric with their forearms. According to their electroneurophysiological responses to fabric contact, the subjects could be categorized into three different types, namely, extraordinary

Electroneurophysiology has been more and more widely used to evaluate the tactile comfort of fabrics. In our previous study, it was found that three different types of subjects exist, namely extraordinary, ordinary, and non-sensitive people, corresponding to their electroneurophysiological responses to fabric-skin contact. In the current study, 19 subjects were recruited, including one extraordinary sensitive, eight ordinary sensitive and 10 non-sensitive subjects who were tested with a smooth cotton fabric and a rough polyester fabric in a fabric-skin dynamic contact experiment. BackgroundThe vagus nerve (VN), also called the pneumogastric nerve, connects the brainstem to organs contained in the chest and abdomen. Physiologically, VN stimulation can rapidly affect cardiac activity and heart rate (HR). VN neuropathy can increase the risk of arrhythmias and sudden death. Therefore, a selective test of VN function may be very useful. Since peripheral neurodynamic tests (NDT) are reliable for the assessment of neuropathies in somatic nerves, we aimed to validate a novel NDT to assess VN activity, namely, the VN-NTD.MethodsIn this cross-sectional double-blind, sex-balanced

Bletilla striata (Thunb.) Rchb.f. is a perennial herb belonging to the Orchidaceae family. Its tubers are used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat gastric ulcers, inflammation, silicosis tuberculosis, and pneumogastric hemorrhage. It has been reported that different soil types can affect the growth of B. striata and the accumulation of secondary metabolites in its tubers, but the biological mechanisms underlying these effects remain unclear. In this study, we compared agronomic traits and the accumulation of secondary metabolites (extractum, polysaccharide, total phenol, militarine) in B.

Abstract:
Background: Gastro-intestinal stromal tumour (GIST) commonly involves stomach. Recently there has been an inclination towards managing these benign but potentially malignant lesions by minimal invasive techniques. Surgical excision of gastric GIST mostly requires anterior wall gastrostomy especially for intraluminal lesions. The size and location of the lesion are critical from technical point of view. Lesions located at gastro-esophageal junction requires larger anterior gastric wall opening to reach the site of tumour for excision. Endoscopic excision for such lesions is not always amenable.

The author does not believe that all of psychology must fit into the narrow boundaries accepted by mainstream reductionist and rationalistic science. Jungian Psychology validates the awareness of spirit. This chapter explains how the soul has the ability to interact with the physical body and how mediums and psychics receive their information—both of these happen through the spiritual body. The author believes that the small voice in our head comes from our soul through the unconscious where our soul resides.
