Abstract:
The article explores the categories “social” and “spiritual capital” used by sociologists and argues that, on the basis of field studies, by the author and also Pnina Werbner, carried out on “spiritual entrepreneurs,” namely South Asian origin Sufi shaykhs in the UK, the category of “spiritual capital” needs to be sharpened, even redefined, in order to create distance from the category of “social capital.” The article critically explores a number of social theorists who have commented on spiritual capital as a form of social capital and challenges their understandings of religious phenomena.

Brown, Eliza. "A narratological analysis of Pnima...ins innere by Chaya Czernowin." Thesis, Northwestern University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10036014.

Full text
Abstract:

Chaya Czernowin’s opera Pnima…ins innere is about the encounter between a young Israeli boy and his grandfather, a Holocaust survivor so traumatized by his past that he cannot speak. Fittingly, the opera does not contain any words: the four singers in the work instead sing phonemes and other non-verbal sounds. This document provides an analysis of the opera from the perspective of musical narratology (the study of musical narrative), seeking to discover how Czernowin enacts the encounter between the child and the old man by means of music alone. In particular, narratological concepts from Byron Almen’s A Theory of Musical Narrative (Indiana University Press, 2008) are adapted for application to Pnima. Three primary musical agents are identified and analyzed in detail: two instrument groups that respectively embody the psyches of the old man and the child, and the string orchestra, which functions as a collective presence rather than enacting the psychology of an individual. Interactions among and changes to these musical agents over the course of the three scenes of the opera are analyzed and interpreted in light of Czernowin’s statements about the work and other contextualizing texts. Using Pnima as a case study, this document comments on both the potential and the limitations of musical narratology with respect to the study of post-tonal music; it also suggests ways in which the analysis it contains might assist in the creation or criticism of productions of the opera.

Abstract:

Thesis, Pau, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PAUU1010/document.

Abstract:
The evolution of international environmental policies and national and local conservation contexts gives increasing importance to the anthropic dimension within the national parks (category II UICN). Not only does this dimension takes into account the local population that lives permanently in these various natural areas, but also the economic actors who, legally or illegally, benefit from those protected areas (tourism, gold-washing, wood, etc.) or participate directly or indirectly in the process of the territorial elaboration of a national park. The integration of the anthropic aspect definitely help the emergence of new dynamics and strategies of collaborative management and policies. Building on political geography, socio-cultural geography and political ecology, this thesis aims to shed light how that anthropic dimension (sociocultural as well as economical) entails the transition of some protected areas from a classical type to a new category we identify as the “Nature and Anthropic National Park” (PNNa). We focus on three specific study cases in the American continent: the Amazonian park of the French Guiana, the Sea Park of Saguenay-Saint-Laurent of Québec, Canada, and the Amazonian Amacayacu National Park of Colombia. The systemic analysis of their structure and their functioning, as far as macrostructure of policies and microstructures of management are concerned, has allowed us to bring out that transition in the territorial management of these category II protected natural areas and the deriving conflicts for power

"Subversive narrative techniques and self-reflexivity in Vladimir Nabokov's the real life of Sebastian Knight, Lolita, Pnin, Pale Fire and Ada, or Ardor: A family Chronicle." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/18694.

Abstract:
This dissertation has three aims. First, the establishment of the theoretical foundations of deconstruction and its appropriation by literary criticism. Second, the application of deconstruction to the novels of Nabokov; it has to be stressed that this application is not itself a deconstructive reading, rather that deconstruction offers the interpretative horizon for an analysis of the inner logic of self-reflexivity in the novels in question. which is defined with de Man and against Derrida as a procedure of textual self-deconstruction. The procedure, evident in the proliferation of textual strategies in Nabokov's work, marks the point at which literary modernism transforms itself through the radicalisation of the critique of narrative, subject and meaning into a postmodern aesthetics of deconstruction. The interpretation of the novels then serves thirdly to pose the question of the value of the theory of deconstruction for the task of interpretation, or more generally. the value of deconstruction for literary theory. The interpretation of Nabokov's novels reveals a paradox: selfdeconstructive literature does not require a deconstructive reading. On the contrary, the textual deconstruction of meaning and reference requires the non-deconstructive standpoint of a coherent literary analysis for its demonstration. Comparably and conversely, a deconstructive reading presupposes a text and/or an author committed to the intention of a meaningful whole (however ambiguous). The author's distinction between deconstruction as a method of interpretation and as a literary theory thus points to the limitations of deconstruction as interpretative method in relation to modern and postmodern texts precisely because of their metafictional affinity to deconstruction. Beyond this, however, deconstruction's treatment of the text as pretext for its own operations, taken to its logical conclusion, would dissolve the very cognitive object and interest of literary studies.

Abstract:
The thesis called Academic Spectacle: Commodification of Knowledge in Pnin, The Breast, and White Noise deals with the commodifying influence of the consumer society on education, knowledge and the perception of information, as it is reflected in the following American academic novels: Pnin (1957) by Vladimir Nabokov, Philip Roth's The Breast (1972) and White Noise (1985) by Don DeLillo. The thesis combines the approach of literary analysis with the use of cultural- theoretical terms and theories relating to the state of postmodern society from the texts of Waltr Benjamin, Jean Baudrillard, Guy Debord, Linda Hutcheon or Theodore Adorno and Max Horkheimer. In addition, it elaborates on sociological concepts, such as "the risk society" of Ulrich Beck, the "public arenas model" of approaching social problems of Stephen Hilgratner and Charles Bosk or "the hyperconsumer society", the term Gilles Lipovetsky applies to the state of present societies. Therefore, the thesis belongs to the area of cultural studies, which typically combine the approaches of sociology and literary studies. For the sake of analyzing the influence of the consumer society on the academic environment (as it is reflected in the given novels), we established four basic aspects of commodification: reification, banalization,...

Abstract:
This chapter discusses Pnina Motzafi-Haller's Concrete Boxes: Mizrahi Women on Israel's Periphery (2018). This ethnographic study is the outcome of four years of field work, during which Motzafi-Haller visited the town of Yeruham, in Israel's southern district, several times a week. During these visits, Motzafi-Haller conducted in-depth interviews with five Mizrahi women: Nurit, Efrat, Rachel, Esti, and Gila. Four of them were raised in Yeruham and live there to this day; the fifth was also raised in the town but left it later. The life choices and social position of each of these women represent different coping strategies vis-à-vis the reality of life on the Israeli margins. Motzafi-Haller sensitively details their daily lives and provides a fascinating look at Mizrahi women positioned at the center of this particular social space.

Thermo-responsive hydrogel can change their swelling behavior and drug release characteristics in response to environmental temperature [1–5]. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) hydrogel undergoes a phase transition when the temperatue is lower than a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of ∼32°C in aqueous solution [8], and drug release profiles in PNIPA hydrogel can be controlled by the alternation of their solution temperatures.

Abstract:
A novel class of nanocomposite hydrogels (NC gels) with a unique organic / inorganic network structure was synthesized by in-situ free-radical polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) or N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) in the presence of inorganic clay (hectorite). Since NC gels are composed of a unique organic / inorganic network structure, which consists of exfoliated clay platelets uniformly dispersed in an aqueous medium with a number of flexible polymer chains linking them together, NC gels exhibit high transparency, high degrees of swelling, and superb mechanical properties with extraordinarily large deformations. Also, NC gels formed from thermo-sensitive polymers, e.g. PNIPA, exhibit rapid temperature-response in transparency and gel volume (de-swelling) at the lower critical solution temperature (LCST). All the properties of NC gels are very different from those of conventional, chemically-crosslinked hydrogels (OR gels). Here, we evaluated various properties of NC gels from a biomaterials point of view, such as mechanical toughness (capable of sewing), absorption (water and saline), purification and extraction, drying (effect of cover film), coexistence of absorption and drying, sterilization (by autoclave and γ-ray irradiation), preliminary implantation (implanted to rabbit intramuscularly) and blood compatibility. These results indicate that NC gels are promising as soft biomaterials with blood compatibility as well as high transparency, absorbing power and mechanical properties.
