Abstract:

Abstract:
Avšak pováleční papežové, především Jan XXIII. a Jan Pavel II., díky své autoritě, vrátili Svatý stolec zpět mezi důležité politické hráče. Apoštolská stolice však nemůže si do budoucna nemůže automaticky mezinárodní vliv nárokovat. Záleží především na jejím hlavním představiteli, jakým způsobem se svým postavením naloží a jaké ambice zasahovat do mezinárodních událostí bude mít.

Abstract:
This thesis compares afterwar fates of three noblemen from the foothills of the Šumava mountains - prince Joseph Windischgrätz, Otomar von Pelikan and Georg Heintschel von Heinegg. These noblemen share a few characteristics. Except being members of the royalty, their mother tongue was German and they all had similarly huge property in a size of a few hundreds hectares. These estates were situated in the not so fertile area of the Šumava foothills. Since all three men were noblemen, after 1918, they felt as being strangers in their own country. This impression was even stronger on their Šumava manor farm estates which were situated in predominantly Czech areas with German minority. Each of the men reacted differently to his uprootedness - Georg Heintschel was involved in the Austrian Fatherland Front and he later entered NSDAP and was a dedicated Nazi member. After the war, he was for this sentenced to death. Pelikan pinned his hopes on Sudeten German movement and entered SdP and during the so-called second republic also into NSDAP. However, already in the beginning of the war he started to temper his opinions and at the end he used his position in the Nazi hierarchy for helping people. Pelikan represents an example of an equivocal collaboration in this thesis. Pelikan's afterwar trial lacks verdict because...

Full text
Abstract:
Recently, the volatile developments in Northeast Asia have put Japanese assertive policies on the spotlight and revived the necessity to understand the state's pacifist conduct that had been studied by scholars aiming to grasp its projection into foreign and security policies ever since the end of the Second World War. The academic debate between neorealism and constructivism gained momentum with the dissolution of the bipolar world order following the end of the Cold War. Yet, the examination of their respective approaches proved the inappropriateness of the rigid adherence to either of the IR stream when scrutinizing the Japanese case. Hence, the thesis expands in the field of analytical eclecticism by reconciling the outputs of the academic debate and consequently maps Japanese post-Cold War evolution through synthesis of concepts emanating from neoclassical realism and strategic culture. The thesis thereby acknowledges the crucial role of the system and its structure and, at the same time, understands the peaceful and antimilitarist principles as a driving force behind Japanese decision-making embedded in the state's strategic culture. Against the backdrop of the complex theoretical and methodological research design, the thesis examines the relevant empirical data within the timespan of almost...

Abstract:
Martin Šmejc Abstract: "Conception of reconstruction of Yugoslavia after WW II." The topic "Conception of reconstruction of Yugoslavia after WW II." covers three different phenomena. The most important factor, that determined the development of Yugoslavia during the WW II., was the coming to power of the communist Partisans led by Josip Broz Tito. Their vision of Yugoslavia's reconstruction after the war was defined during the second session of the AVNOJ in Bosnian town Jajce in November 1943. How should according to those visions reconstructed Yugoslavia look like is one of the research questions this thesis is going to answer. The second phenomenon touches upon the conceptions of Yugoslavia's reconstruction by the royal Yugoslav governments in exile. Their project was quite as important as of the Partisans. Their importance resides in the fact that until March 1945, when a united government of Royalists and Partisans based on Tito-Šubašić agreement was created, the government in exile were considered as the only legitimate representatives of Yugoslavia. The third analyzed phenomenon is the impact of the three Allied powers on the situation of Yugoslavia until 1948. The third question posed in this analysis will determine the scope of influence of the USA, UK and USSR on the development of Yugoslavia -...

Abstract:
(in English): This master's thesis focus on the repatriation of Koreans from Japan after World War II. The repatriation process was in many aspects more complicated than it could seem to be at the first sight. A hindrance to the repatriation of more than 2 million Koreans, who were left behind in Japan after the end of war, was vague politics of Supreme Command for Allied Powers (SCAP). SCAP did not possess any specific plan considering Koreans and other foreigners in Japan after its arrival to the Japanese archipelago. Therefore, the government of Japan was the one who seized upon the Korean repatriation and began sending ships from Japan's islands loaded with Korean laborers and soldiers, who were living testimony of its war crimes and a thread for Japanese public order. The government of Japan, however, was limited by number of ships, which it could provide for transportation of Koreans, and by number of available ports. As the waiting time for boarding on a repatriation ship was getting longer and longer, majority of Koreans could not wait anymore. In those cases, they usually decided to rent a small vessel, by which they got transported to the Korean peninsula. Those vessels, however, were making their voyages without a permission and were easy target for pirates or typhoons, which were...

The main goal of this disertation is to map American pespectives on the position of Central Europe in American foreign policy after the Cold War. Its ambition is to systematize the particular area of American foreign policy thought that deals with Central Europe and, more precisely, with U.S. relations with the region. The goal is to contribute to a better understanding of how have the individual camps and traditions represented in the American foreign policy debate approached this particular issue. To achieve these goals, this disertation employs two existing typologies of American foreign policy thought and, subsequently, attempts to create a new, original typology that would better suit the aim of mapping the whole spectrum of relevant American perspectives on Central Europe. This disertation does not describe what has really happened in Central European-American relations, but rather aims at understanding better the U.S. foreign policy thought or, better said, one specific part of it: Opinions on U.S.-Central European relations and the position of Central Erope in international politics. Analysing the American post-Cold War discourse on Central Europe is the instrument to achieve this goal. This disertation, however, does not pressupose a direct causal link between the discourse and the...

Title: Comparison of the Czechoslovak and German prison systems following World War II Author: Klára Pinerová Department: Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Arts, Institute of Economic and Social History Supervisor: prof. PhDr. Jiří Štaif, CSc. After World War II, countries that fell into the Soviet sphere of influence experienced major social, political and economic changes in a process which is in literature usually referred to as "Sovietization". This dissertation analyzes this process in the particular case of prison systems in Czechoslovakia and the Societ Occupation Zone which later became the German Democratic Republic. Its main focus lies on the way the Soviet model was applied in both countries, what kinds of similarities or differences can be traced in its development and what were the factors and reasons causing them. The main argument of the dissertation is that Sovietization, even though it produced similar results, was carried out in different ways in the individual countries, depending not only on previous development, but also on the geopolitical position and specific features of the country as well as on the will of the local communist establishment to adopt the Soviet model. It should be also noted that the Soviet model was not uniformly defined, but subject to konstant...

In other six chapters I elucidate the situation of the Odry region in particular periods: in 1938, during World War II, and in the era of the liberation, followed by the transfer of the German population and the process of a new habitation. The last chapter then discusses the postwar Odry region as a home both lost and obtained. 1 Abstract in english: The aim of this thesis is the particular legal act n. 143/1947 Sb., on the transfer of the assets of the Hluboka's branch of Schwarzenbergs to Czech country, also known as "Lex Schwarzenberg". The purpose of this work is to describe this unusual case (in Czech law an extraordinary case), especially from the point of view of the context of its creation. For this reason, the thesis deals with the political background in the time of adoption of this legal regulation and then wiith the predominant basis of legal theory. An important part of the thesis is also the analysis of the act itself. The basis for writing the presented work was mainly archival materials from the second half of the 1940s, for example from the Archives of the Office of the President of the Republic or from the private Schwarzenberg Archives in Murau. Some of the presented archive materials have been published in the past, others not. Another important source is specialized historical-legal and theoretical-legal literature. An Abstract The text focuses on the aim of the state politics to gain the position of the first global hegemony after the end of the Cold War. It observes, with the regard to the wide-ranging influence of the USA at that time, and to the important American visions about its character, especially their particular decisions. It tries to describe the way, which the other influential participants of the global politics, the states as well as those of other kind, used to express their reactions to this activity, and their relation to the USA, the strongest contender in the effort to acquire the first global hegemony. The power contest is here mainly introduced by the insight into the course of the conflicts, which they, after the end of the Cold War, faced and influenced. The text concentrates on those political and security challenges with, apart from the policies of the USA, the strong presence of the intervention of the international organizations, above all the UN, the NATO and the EU, or of the occassionally created alliances. The prospects of hegemonial possibilities is presented in the conclusion.

The victory of Christian democrats in the parliamentary election of 1948 in Italy was made possible by a cooperation between the Holy See and United States during the pre-election campaign. The thesis presents the outcome of research done on American, but especially on Vatican foreign policy. The foreign policy of Pius XII between 1945 and 1950 had three main features. They were support for European integration, relations with certain European states and fight against communism. A stand of the Holy See on these issues is compared to the American one. The outcome of the analysis is that their foreign policies had some aims in common but that it hardly ever led to cooperation. There were some minor examples of cooperation, but there was none as significant as the one in Italy in 1948. Key words: Holy See, Pius XII, foreign policy, USA, communism, integration

This thesis deals with post-war lives of eighteen respondents who were according to the Nuremberg Laws labeled as Jews or half-Jews. They have been imprisoned in concentration camps, they had to hide or emigrate during the World War II. This thesis focuses on their lives after the war. It traces their return, not/regaining of their property, reunification with their family and friends, or their post-war emigration. The thesis also centers around their lives after the communist regime came to power in Czechoslovakia, it was a regime that many Jewish survivors supported in the beginning. The thesis also concentrates on their lives during anti-Semitic purges in the 1950s to which many family members of the respondents fell victims. In the 1960s, borders were a bit more "open" and this was welcomed my many because most of the Jewish families had relatives and friends abroad. Lots of the respondents decided to emigrate after the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia. The following decades of normalization maintained the discourse of hidden anti-Semitism and restrictions of personal freedoms. Many respondents eagerly welcomed the Velvet Revolution. They were able to strengthen their own Jewish identity thanks to newly gained freedoms and emergence or re-creation of many Jewish organizations. Last but not...

Kořeny vzájemných vztahů českých a polských historiků můžeme hledat již hluboko v XIX. století. V této době, kdy se začínají formovat základy moderního polského a českého národa, vznikají i obrysy moderní české a polské historiografie. Jako příklad zde můžeme uvést živý zájem otce naší historické vědy Františka Palackého o dění v Polsku, a to zejména v době národních povstání let 1831 a 1863. I když Palacký ke druhému z těchto povstání zaujímal stanovisko ryze negativní a to hlavně díky svému slavjanofilství, rozpoutala se v řadách české inteligence debata, která dostala dění v ruském záboru do středu veřejného života a kromě jiného vyvolala zájem i o dějiny našich sousedů a jejich historickou tradici.

The Organization of Repatriation of Displaced Persons in Czechoslovakia after World War II. Bc. et Bc. Jana Kasíková Abstract Analyzing the social aspects of the repatriation process of those forced out of their home countries to Czechoslovakia during WW2, this thesis first describes the communication and cooperation of the Czechoslovakian exile government in London with international organizations, particularly with UNRRA and SHAEF. Furthermore, the social, health, transportation and financial impact of creating and maintaining the supporting structures for repatriating displaced persons is explored, with both governmental and non-governmental perspective. Special attention is given to the participation of the general public, e.g. donations, volunteering, media coverage and public relations. The final chapter then explores the organizational structure of the repatriation process in Czechoslovakia. Specific communication between Czechoslovakian and French institutions is presented as an insight into international cooperation. Abstract:
EN The purpose of my thesis is to analyse the process of secularization in the post-war era in Italy. The study is focused on lower social classes. The aim of my thesis is to show the complexity of the process such as secularization; on the one hand there are statistic numbers showing the trend of falling religiosity, on the other hand we know Italians as believers in God and Italy as a country with catholic symbols appearing openly in public. To understand this ambivalence, it is necessary to distinguish church, religion and faith. As a primary source for my thesis I have chosen novels of the neorealist writers. As neorealism tries to capture predominantly the social reality and the writers show greater capability of uncovering the motivation of historical figure than any other possible sources, selecting the works of the neorealist writers proves to be more than suitable. The main methodology chosen for my thesis is typification, through which I tried to define the social stereotypes. The thesis is composed of nine chapters. Chapters one to three describe the political, economic and social situation of post-war Italy and define the social segment on which the thesis is focused. Presented is a characterization of neorealism and the authors as well as the most important theories of secularization...

Abstract:
The subject-matter of this dissertation paper is the description and analysis of the topic of the post-war fate of certain Czechoslovak pilots in Great Britain in the post-war years. In the introduction to this paper, I outline the atmosphere at the time and the process of integration of western pilots in Czechoslovakia after liberation. The paper at the same time addresses the efforts of the British wives of these pilots to assimilate into Czechoslovak society. The changes in the political circumstances, especially, compelled the RAF pilots to start considering leaving Czechoslovakia again. After February 1948, the persecution of the RAF officers was already evident. Political purges in the armed forces compelled them to leave Czechoslovakia again. The paper typologises the exodus of the RAF pilots abroad into subgroups and for each of these subgroups, it demonstrates the various and clearly very similar fates of the pilots, which are linked by departure to Great Britain, where they served in the RAF during the war. The typology of the exodus differentiates those pilots who remained in Great Britain and did not return to Czechoslovakia after the war and those that left legally and those that left the country illegally and emigrated. To clarify the problems of hijack of aircraft, the form of back...

I wanted to reveal the impacts strengthening the resistance towards the recatholisation. These are natural conditions, the cohesion of relationships with the non-Catholic background, insufficient church administration; the activity of non-Catholic predikants and the national conservatism of the dependents, non-Catholic officials and authorities not settled on the demesne. Each and every impact mentioned has been closely analysed in relevant chapter. Finally, I summed up the progress and results of the recatholisation from 1650 till the end of 1651.

This thesis describes the situation of French media during World War II and after its end. It compares the degree of collaboration in the territory occupied by Nazi Germany and in the area administered by Vichy government with Marshall Pétain as its head. The work notes that the Vichy government gradually becomes pro-German. It also emphasis on the Resistance movement as the new French media arises just of Resistance press. After the Liberation extensive trials with collaborators were carried out. This work is focused on the purge held in media especially. It explains the re-creation of new French press on Resistance press basis, politically mostly left-winged. The field is evenly professionalized - schools arise, the technical equipment is improved, women have been entering the editorial departments. But the shaky political situation, including the threat of the Cold War, results in a crisis of the political press. Journalists react by putting emphasis on truth and facts, and create, within co called new left tendency, platform for emerging democracy. The press of entertainment (sports and women's magazines, e.g.) is also developed as reaction to politics. Radio broadcast and telecast are slowly growing after the Liberation. 1. INTRODUCTION The post-World War II America was considered an era of great progress in many aspects. Generally, it mirrored in the betterment of living standard that suddenly had steeply risen due to a flourishing economy and prosperity. This era beginning at the turn of the late forties and early fifties became also known as the embodiment of the American Dream that for many Americans came true thanks to a heyday of revolutionary projects in housing, infrastructure and other developments that followed later on. Basically, new visions of lifestyle came up hand in hand with new opportunities and trends. Since one of the major advancements in this period of progress represented the phenomenon of the booming motor vehicle transport that went hand in hand with the extensive highway building, hardly anybody could have foreseen what merits and impacts would come up therewith. Several changes that occurred due to the above mentioned advancement in economy can be referred to as yielding and positive. However among others, this postwar period also brought its side effects as for instance: the rise of suburbia, the deterioration of city cores, suburban sprawl and or the problem of endless bumper-to-bumper gridlocks. Those last-mentioned phenomena together with the highway building and flourishing car industry had...

Abstract:
I will attempt to base my work on historical facts while describing the overall situation as it was perceived then. The post-war period was a time of reconstruction both in terms of economy and morals. In the education area, the renewed Republic faced a decision whether to continue the heritage of the First Republic and its experimental schools or whether to follow new trends from abroad (mainly the USSR). At that time the Communist Party already had a strong position but it is was still only one of the parties influencing the course of events in the country. The 4-year Gymnasium (secondary school) was re-established and it became a selective institution. The first attempts to unite the education system are starting to appear. Later on, prototypes of normalized schools are being founded. There is also a pressure to make schools public. The main effort is to increase the over-all expertise of the secondary school teachers. Most reforms fail due to the lack of financial resources in the post-war state. This time period may be described as the time the education system was searching for its identity. It was the time of discussion between the heritage of the First Republic and the accession of the Communist party and its aim to establish a unified education system.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce books of financial orders of Prague Old Town Council from 1656 - 1677 (1678) as a unique historical source for studying expenses of the municipality. These books are higly significant for being the only preserved economic Old Town records from that period of time. Thanks to them it is possible to reconstruct the municipal economy in the 2nd half of the 17th century. The author of this document has tried to analyze individual types of expenses and sort them out into a system. He has recognized four basic categories: repayments to municipal creditors, expenses for the purchase of land and estates, building investments, gifts and donations, salaries and wages. The last category has been made of small number of other expenses. All the above mentioned expenses are described in detail in different chapters and interpreted in the context of Prague Old Town history. Title Opinions of a German about the value-shifts in the society after the Second World War. Interpretation of the novel "Clown" by Heinrich Böll and its film adaptation Abstract This diploma thesis deals with the novel The Clown (1963) by an important representative of the German post-war literature Heinrich Böll and its film adaptation (1974) of the same name by a Czech director Vojtěch Jasný. The first part of the thesis presents author's life, literary work as well as the roots of his broadly humanistic view of life, which are closely interlinked with his strong Christian belief and his personal value system. The main target of the thesis is a thorough interpretation of the novel, in which author's critical viewpoint on the socio-cultural development of the post-war German society is very strongly reflected. The author's sharp satirical tone in this novel and the very evident anticlericalism are being looked at and explored in terms of the biblical motto of the novel and its main message. The aim of the final chapter is to point out the main differences between the novel and the film adaptation.
