Awang, Alias. "Resistance mechanisms in cocoa to the cocoa pod borer Conopomorpha cramerella (Snellen)." Thesis, University of Reading, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.553134.

Full text
Abstract:
The underlying resistance mechanisms to cocoa pod borer (CPB) in cocoa were investigated. Experiments performed under field conditions in Malaysia showed that female CPB preferred to lay eggs on pods of clones with a rough pod surface compared to clones with a smooth pod surface. This appeared to be related to a higher density of trichomes on rough pods. The production of volatile compounds by cocoa pod trichomes is thought to stimulate females CPB to lay more eggs. Cocoa pods develop a lignified sclerotic layer and the thickness of this sclerotic layer determines the hardness of the pod, but

Abstract:
The Cocoa Pod Borer (CPB) moth, Conopomorpha cramerella (Snellen) (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) was first detected attacking cocoa in Papua New Guinea in 2006. Attempts to eradicate were unsuccessful and efforts to promulgate intervention strategies in the cocoa farming communities moved slowly due to various constraints. This provided an opportunity for the pest to spread. The pest, by now, has been in the country for more than six years. However, there is no information and work done on the local biological and ecological interactions of the pest and its distribution. This information is pre

Abstract:
Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) is a sub-tropical and tropical pulse rich in plant-based protein, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins. Helicoverpa armigera is the most devastating insect pest in pigeonpea. This study focussed on deciphering the molecular host plant resistance (HPR) mechanisms applied by Cajanus scarabaeoides a wild pigeonpea against insect using transcriptomic and proteomic studies. These HPR mechanisms were transferred to the cultivated pigeonpea via interspecific hybridisation, and they are stable at F2 generation. The study outcome provides a unique insight into the insect resi

The osteoclast ruffled border is a highly convoluted, complex membrane that is necessary for bone resorption. It is thought to form following mass lysosomal fusion with the boneapposing plasma membrane and vesicular trafficking is vital for its formation and function. The aim of this PhD was to better understand the ultrastructure, formation and function of the ruffled border using TEM and advanced imaging techniques. Ruffled border reformation following calcitonin treatment was visualised and the stages of ruffled border formation were described. Ruffled borders in healthy and osteopetrotic o

Abstract:
Scottish military offensives against England from 1369 were largely the product of governmental policy, and involved the participation of much of the political community of the realm. They were launched with careful timing, taking account of international developments and domestic problems in England. In the reign of Robert II they involved close co-operation with France and succeeded militarily, enabling the Scots to regain English-occupied lands in southern Scotland and achieve diplomatic gains. Military success encouraged the Scots to the point where they were willing to engage in attacks o

In India, the world's largest producer of groundnut, the oil is of prime importance as a cooking medium (Wightman and Amin, 1988), and in recent years this crop has gained a lot of importance due to shortage of edible oil.
