Abstract:
Transcending the boundaries of literature, the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Stanislaw Lem contribute to a dialogue between literary, philosophical, and scientific cultures. A critical approach to these writers that ignores the epistemic dimension in their works opens itself to the charge of misunderstanding their artistic goals and aspirations. In my dissertation I thus define, justify, and conduct an interdisciplinary study of Poe and Lem's works.
My project is underwritten by the epistemological assumption that literary works, and notably works of fiction, can make a contribution to knowledge that can be assessed in terms of interdisciplinary criteria. In the first chapter, where I discuss literature and knowledge within the interdisciplinary context, I examine various epistemological arguments in light of my central assertion. Next I examine the concepts involved in the discussion of literary works. Following the pragmatic re-orientation in literary and philosophical aesthetics, many fundamental concepts we take for granted--artworks, fictions, and texts among them--require exact re-examination and definition. Consequently, in Chapters Two and Three I review and refine the recent theories concerning the nature of works of art, the specificity of literary fictions, and the problem of literary interpretations.
My subsequent discussion of Poe and Lem is built on the theoretical base of (literary) epistemology and analytical aesthetics. I study Poe and Lem's literary fictions and theoretical essays, and the contributions they make to various fields of inquiry. In the process I critique, and sometimes refine, the explicit and implicit hypotheses articulated in their works. Specifically In Chapters Four and Five I discuss strategic and game theoretic models in the interpretation of fiction, including the concepts of communication and rationality. In Chapter Six, completing the epistemological circle inaugurated in Chapter One, I discuss the epistemological and cosmological theories proposed in Poe's "Eureka".

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study traces archetypal images in selected prose fiction by Edgar Allan Poe and shows his consistent use of such imagery throughout his career, and outlines the archetypal images that Poe uses repeatedly throughout his works: the death of the beautiful woman, death and resurrection, the hero's journey to the underworld, and the quest for forbidden knowledge. The study examines Poe's use of myth to establish and uphold archetypal patterns. Poe's goal when crafting his works was the creation of a single specified effect, and to create his effects, he used the materials at hand. Some of these materials came from his own subconscious; however, a greater portion came from a lifetime of study and his own understanding of the connections between myth and archetypal images.

The goal of the dissertation is the comparison of fantastic tales of the romantic writer Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) and the Brazilian writer, who also produced stories of the fantastic genre, Machado de Assis (1839-1908). The predominant issue is how the two authors who lived in different eras and in different countries so diverse socioeconomically may have their supernatural works compared. To answer this disturbing question, some clues of Poean influence on the fantastic tales from the Brazilian writer were obtained, such as the celebrated translation of Poe's poem "The Raven" (1845), made by Machado (or "O Corvo", as translated by himself in 1883); it is also important to our studies to analyse the quotes in newspapers in which Machado wrote, such as o Diário do Rio de Janeiro (1866) and Gazeta de Notícias (1895), as well as the comparison between the short stories “O Espelho” (1882) and “Sem olhos” (1876), by the Brazilian writer, and “William Wilson” (1839) and “Ligeia” (1838), by Poe.

Abstract:
The purpose of this literary research project is the analysis of the thematic content as well as the formal devices of five of the poems written by Edgar Allan Poe. In order to connect and find the common concepts that pertains to this research, the following poems were chosen: “Annabel Lee” (1849); “Leonore” (1845); “To Helen” (1831); “The sleeper” (1831); and “Ulalume” (1847). In spite of the importance of poetry for Poe, it is noticeable the lack of pieces of research about this issue when compared with the number of researchers about his short stories. With this in mind, our attempt with this work is to make a study regarding one of the most relevant and recurrent subject in his poems: the presence of women, who were an unsolved issue in his entired life. Five poems have been chosen to this purpose, and converging on the concept of women as ethereal symbols and absent lovers existing beyond the limits of the terrestrial body. These descriptions of an idealized concept of women made contrast with some lewd female characters commonly developed by other American authors that were also concerned with horror stories. Our attempt is to take the transgressive allusions present in these poems in the light of Poe`s own background through his life in the American puritan society.

Assim, a presente pesquisa procurou sistematizar o peculiar modus operandi de Poe através da análise de seus contos The black cat, The fall of the house of Usher, The oval portrait, The man of the crowd, William Wilson, Ligeia, e ensaios The philosophy of composition Philosophy of furniture e The poetic principle, para em seguida contrastar os resultados obtidos com as teorias do fantástico, em especial a de Todorov, permitindo estabelecer, dessa forma, pouco a pouco, outra leitura da literatura fantástica, sob a ótica da própria teoria pessoal de Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe said about his poem The Raven, in his essay The philosophy of composition, that [...] no one point in its composition is referrible either to accident or intuition - that the work proceeded, step by step, to its completion with the precision and rigid consequence of a mathematical problem. thereby demonstrating that he understood the creative process is a purely logical, conscious and analytical. And indeed, analysis of his texts proves the proposition cited. In addition, the american author is seen by much of literary criticism as the master of horror, featuring some of his texts in the canon of masterpieces of fantastic, with almost indispensable the presence of some of his tales in a collection of this literary category. Starting from those factors, it was possible to hypothesize that as the Poe‟s work is so closely related to the fantastic, the analysis of their rational and systematic compositional method may lead to inclusion of new elements the existing structure of fantastic literature. Thus, this research sought to systematize the peculiar modus operandi of Poe through the analysis of his short stories The black cat, The fall of the house of Usher, The oval portrait, The man of the crowd, William Wilson, Ligeia, and the essays The philosophy of composition, Philosophy of furniture and The poetic principle, then to contrast the results with the theories of fantastic, particularly Todorov‟s, establishing, thus, little by little, another reading of fantastic literature, from the perspective of their own Edgar Allan Poe‟s personal theory

The intent of this study is to draw analogies and contrasts between Edgar Allan Poe and Alphonsus de Guimaraens vis-à-vis the aesthetic principles they decided to impress upon their poetic work, chiefly as far as the themes of love (Eros) and death (Thanatos) are concerned. We have endeavored to describe that these poetic overtones are addressed from a gothic-melancholic angle in order to reach the sublime. In the first four chapters, we theorize on how the gothic, melancholy and the sublime can be intertwined poetically. In the fifth and sixth chapters, we discuss the modi operandi that Poe and Alphonsus employ in this tripartite relationship of gothic motifs, melancholy and the sublime. In the last chapter, we make use of Freudian theories to a large extent so as to demonstrate the outcome of this gothicmelancholic interplay between Eros and Thanatos in the romantic-symbolist poetry of these artists.

Abstract:
The paper aims to verify how the writings of Edgar Allan Poe and Machado de Assis had been influenced by the humanity' scientific and technological advances. The analysis proposes to reveal the sight of these two writers over the new possibilities that had been offered to the society, with the main objective of emphasizing the literature role in this process, considering that the human being is able to see the behavior of an entire period of time and consequently to himself through the literary work. This action of “looking back” and of “looking inside”, believes this research, allows him advance still more. In order to do that, the research takes some concepts as intertextuality and interdisciplinarity, extremely valued to the Comparative Literature, with the main objective of promoting relations between the different areas of knowledge – Literature and Science –, between the two different writers and, in the end, among the various literary genres that take part of the corpus of this study. After a brief view of the humanity history of scientific and technological advances development, the analysis of the selected texts is performed, endeavoring to emphasize and make the relation between the ways of thinking of these writers, proving that specific ideas about science and its advances really are in the literary production of each other. In the end, after the confrontation established during all over the research between the thinking and the position of the writers, the literature role in the humanity’s development and advance is discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In mythical literature, there is an ancient wisdom that is proposed to be interpreted from the reading of Edgar Poe, and which can shed light on the postmodern era and the new challenges it sets for man. In 1848, Edgar Allan Poe, a poet heir to the mythographic tradition, in his cosmogonic "poem" Eureka, carried out a hybrid experiment combining scientific inquiry, paranormal intuition and poetic imagination. By linking myths, physical sciences and the evolution of thought to the intuition of an underlying Reality, he recognizes a fundamental connection between Being and the World, and the existence of truths that cannot be demonstrated by an ordinary logic, like the principle of Cohesion or Universal Coherence (Consistency) which links Everything. The most recent cognitive experiments show that Poe's poetic conceptions agree with emerging questions in current science concerning the involvement of memory and consciousness in the making of reality. They are recognized here as being intimately linked, producing by their joint activity phenomena which escape a classical vision but leave interpretable traces. A comparative and transdisciplinary approach makes it possible to explore with Poe the faculties specific to living things and to test their visibility at different levels of reality. Following intuition, like Poe, makes it possible to generate avenues of research that open up new perspectives on condition that they are testable, which is why the hermeneutical approach to texts is complemented by an experimental approach exploring other modalities of a fundamental link between beings and their ecosystem

Abstract:
A unified theory of Poe’s works, bringing his diverse writing together into one coherent story can be found in his cosmogony, that is to say, in his understanding of universal mechanics. This latter understanding is based on the idea of a god dividing himself into the almost infinity of matter that makes up the universe, building it in his literal image. The division of the divine soul is, according to Poe, echoed by the intrinsic division of the human soul. As such, Time, Death, and Destiny are fundamentally interconnected: cosmic history and human history are one and the same, ruled by time and circumscribed by death. This story can be found all throughout Poe’s works and is thus the archetypal pattern at the core of this unified theory

Abstract:
The aim of the thesis is to submit the fiction of E.A. Poe (1809-1849), in particular his short stories featuring intradiegetic narrators to a phenomenological and textual exploration, the purpose of which is to show how in these works writing becomes mimetic of mental disturbance. In order to thus examine the way in which madness plays a central role in the corpus, shaping it by unfolding rhythms distinctive of psychosis and a credible symptomatology, we adopt a psychopathological and phenomenological perspective, such as inaugurated in psychiatrist Ludwig Binswanger’s Daseinsanalyse, developed by a number of disciples, among whom Ronald D. Laing, Bin Kimura, etc. In its approach of psychosis, this phenomenological clinical method is predicated upon three central vectors: presumption, mannerism and distortion, that is to say pathological modes of being in the world that are prevalent among mentally disturbed subjects. The dissertation relies at the same time on the conceptual instruments of literary and textual analysis, to reveal the discursive methods mimetic of mental disorders, namely systems where pathos determines logos and conversely

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper presents a brief summary of the Skopostheorie proposed by Katharina Reiß and Hans Vermeer in Grundlegung einer allgemeinen Translationstheorie (1984) in order to assess the way in which the concepts of “communicative translation” and “equivalent translation” could be applied to a new translation of the cryptogram found in Edgar Allan Poe’s short-story, “The Gold-Bug” (1843). There are over twenty translations of the story into Brazilian Portuguese, but a new effort is nonetheless in order in view of the insufficiency of all existing translations with regard to the literary treatment of the special problems posed by the cipher and Legrand’s decipherment. The important role played by cryptology in the genesis, reception and later influence of “The Gold-Bug” is demonstrated by means of examples and arguments, and finally a new translation of the cryptogram is proposed with the aim of producing, in Brazilian Portuguese, a text with the same literary and ratiocinative qualities which eventually led to the tale’s immense popularity and Poe’s rise to the status of “genius” still in the 19th century.

Semichon, Laurent. "Charles Baudelaire's translations of Edgar Allan Poe." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6871.

Abstract:
Although one of the best-known cases of intercultural literary partnership, Charles Baudelaire's translations of Edgar Allan Poe's works have been little analysed with a methodology appropriate to Translation Studies. Relying on a functionally target-oriented approach to translation and an empirical methodology, the present thesis undertakes this analysis. Positioning the prospective function(s) of the translations as intended by the translator within their historical context, Chapter One explores the para-discourse of the translator and its contemporary reception. Beyond the Romantic critical tradition of the whole project, Baudelaire's introductory writings on Poe appear to target in a propagandist way the literary elite of the time. On the contrary, the selection and organization of the five volumes of translations for publication suggest primarily a popularising strategy intended to capture, through the fictional genre, the attention of the growing mass audience of the Second Empire. In Chapters Two and Three, traditional appraisals of the translations in terms of quality assessment are questioned in favour of an explanation of interpretative frameworks and translation strategies as seen through the analyses of two translated tales and of textual variables throughout the corpus. Baudelaire's biographical interpretation of the narrative voice combines with clear strategies to normalize the stylistic authority of the texts and to increase their dramatic and expressive impact, offering in the end a less rhetorical, but aesthetically more Romantic and narratively more Realist reading of Poe's fantastic tales. Baudelaire would thus have managed to reconcile at a textual level the ambiguities of his para-discourse in terms of targeted readership as seen in Chapter One. It is finally argued that beyond the constraints of the receiving system and the strategies of the translator to accommodate these, the French image of Poe as produced by Baudelaire owes much to a French resistance to the narrative ambiguity and style that Poe's writing represents. Confirming or challenging existing criticism on the Poe-Baudelaire case, the present thesis thus hopes to contribute, not only to our relatively limited knowledge of mid-nineteenth-century French translation, but also to our understanding of French short fiction and its conflicting stakes in terms of aesthetics and readership.

Abstract:
The story of how Poe's works were greeted in France between 1844 and 1877 brings out several anomalies due principally to the difficulty of rendering it natural without compromising its originality. In order to understand how those who translated or published them attempted to resolve these problems, we should interest ourselves in the image of the writer himself, as this played an important role concerning the acceptance of his work. The mythical and scandalous portrait of Poe painted and imposed by Baudelaire, based on a critical discussion, contributed as much to the works being condemned as to their success. The task of naturalising inevitably involves the process of translation so that the noticeable and determinant influence of Baudelaire and Mallarmé whose passion for Poe and perfectionism have prevailed over a number of attempts at clumsy or incorrect adaptations, even though baudelaire's own translations are by no means faultless. Finally, dialogue with the public and the new production and its translators reveal that the latter had to take into account the literary experience of the readers into order to speak about Poe's works. In any case, the acknowledgement of earlier models did not so much eclipse the strange character and originality of the works, which often contested at the time, finally ensured that they became masterpieces

Space and Time are structural elements of fundamental importance in literary narrative, and may take several functions. The methods and narrative procedures the writer arranges are diverse. Their establishment generate a relationship between them which aesthetic and narrative values are often different for each work. Each writer designs them according to their style, as well as their aesthetic-literary conceptions. From this axiom, which is the existence of space and time as narrative categories, we analyze two specific literary works: the short story called The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe, and the novel The Judgment by Franz Kafka. Drawing on the analysis of their works, we see how both categories are presented in a short story and in a novel and how they assist in achieving predefined effects, such as the ones listed in “The Philosophy of Composition” and in the Fantastic Realism, respectively. Our aim is to highlight the specificities of how Poe and Kafka portray Space and Time in both narratives. By doing so, we intend to study the main narrative aspects of the short story and the novel in question so as to highlight their specific features, listing their narrative functions. Therefore, the concepts of topic and described Space, in addition to the aspects of Time from the narrative and diegetic levels are focused

Abstract:

Abstract:

Main features of the Gothic in the literature of the late eighteenth century and the early nineteenth. Definition of the genre considering Poe's short-stories in the literary context at the time. Influence of early "gothic" novels in the development of fantastic fiction. Study of gothic elements in the setting of his tales contributing to the creation of the supernatural. How he manages to give rise to the fantastic through the imaginary and how he succeeds in destabiliing the reader through an outstanding power of imagination. The world in which he makes his characters evolve clearly reflects his wish for self-destruction and this can be found throughout his work. Abstract:
Odilon Redon, The Visual Poet of Edgar Allan Poe: A Study of the Lithographic Album A Edgar Poe argues that the album A Edgar Poe, published in 1882, fundamentally alters Redon's artistic career. The thesis advocates the importance of Poe's writing to Redon's development, contending that the lithographic album confirms nineteenth-century literary and artistic interest in Poe. The thesis maintains that, while Redon subsequently attempted to disassociate himself from the American writer, his art was recognized and admired for its Poe-esque visions. Chapter One examines Edgar Allan Poe's influence on the nineteenth-century French artistic and literary avant-garde. The chapter argues that the artistic and spiritual resemblance between Poe and Redon facilitates the design the lithographic album A Edgar Poe, a work Redon uses to promote his own standing as an artist. Through examination of the original plates of the lithographic album A Edgar Poe at The Art Institute of Chicago, Chapter Two illustrates Poe's centrality to the evolution of Redon's art. Chapter Three argues for the importance of A Edgar Poe in Redon's oeuvre, contending that subsequent albums and commissions show the important role of literary art in Redon's artistic growth. The chapter demonstrates the significance of Redon's work to the Symbolist avant-garde of Brussels. Utilizing Andre Mellerio's notes, essays, collected letters and writings in the Ryerson & Burnham Library at the Art Institute of Chicago, the thesis argues that the album A Edgar Poe represents a pivotal stage in Redon's career through its dedication to a literary artist and the unification of art and poetry. Contending that the album develops themes prevalent in the noirs, the thesis illustrates the artistic resemblance and relationship between Poe and Redon and emphasizes the crucial role of Poe's work in Redon's progression and acceptance as an artist.

In this work I will study a particular urban subject present in every society, I will investigate the urban subject of the criminal illustrated in an Edgar Allan Poe’s selection of seven tales. In this case I have decided to rename the criminal as “pariah”. I use this term because I consider that it fits perfectly when defining a person that is “undesirable” and “rejected” by society. The choice of this term is also supported by David Reynolds’s work Beneath the American Renaissance in which he refers to the “asocial” subjects of the urban city as a “pariah”. I have lent this term because I consider that it is suitable to describe the subject being studied. It is also relevant to add that Charles Baudelaire refers to Poe as a “—drunkard pauper, oppressed pariah” (58). The use of the term pariah to refer to Edgar Allan Poe’s protagonists is just a coincidence with Baudelaire’s use of the term.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Based on the study of the representations of suffering, our research considers the issues and consequences of a reader’s tendency to confuse the author’s voice with one of an instance which is created within his writing. Suffering being easily presented in relation to the creative potential, it plays a large part in the authors international reception. Its complex representations in the works of Fyodor Dostoevsky, Charles Baudelaire and Edgar Allan Poe led these writers to develop a particular aesthetic, in the center of which is a created subject with an inner-self which is easily confused with that of the author. The embodiment of suffering thus shows the fragility of identity, of which the representations are always fragmented, paradoxical or even oxymoronic, because it allows the coexistence of multiple approaches regarding its representations. From that perspective, suffering acts, as the prose poem of Charles Baudelaire said, as a “luminous poison”. Spread inside and from a moving subject, suffering hides and reveals at the same time, thereby confronting the reader with the unbearable mystery of identity

This research has as main objective investigating the composition of suspense narratives – their origins and implications – from the analysis of the works of Edgar Allan Poe, G.K. Chesterton and Alfred Hitchcock. On the basis of the survey on the works of two great names in literary crime-fiction and the examination on the filmography of ‘the master of suspense’: Poe’s Black Cat, Chesterton’s The Honor of Israel Gow and Hitchcock's The Lodger are defined as models of paradigmatic narratives in the oeuvres of each artist in question. Thus, based on the narrative analysis and the theoretical support about suspense, the contrast between blame and innocence will be assigned as a common element to the narratives of the three authors; as well as it will be discussed the hypothesis that Hitchcock created a moral suspense, quite characteristic to his cinema style of crime-fiction, from the convergence between peculiar elements of Poe’s work and odd elements of Chesterton’s work. In other words, based on a simple initial connection – the crime-fiction – this research intends to collect the maximum information on the stories under analysis in order to comprehend the suspense and the fear originated in the conflict between guilt and innocence, in both arts (cinema and literature).

Abstract:
Hedayat, passionned by the techniques of the western works, realize his aim to liberate the persan literature from the yoke of the conventionalism, after meeting the great masters of the western literature. The thought and the works of hedayat have been influenced by western current in a large period of his life. In our study these moments of the meeting are traced. We privileged the meeting with poe and discoverd the univers of the fear and the horror of the death, accomplished in the crime and the loss of the identity. Hedayat is an innovator in adopting the new techniques of writing. Baudelaire, Poe, Rilke, Joyce, Kafka, Faulkner are authors, Hedayat admired the style. The work of Hedayat let him to express the qualms of the modern man. If Hedayat is an innovator in persan literature, he is also in western literature. Some qualifications of his work show us affinities with nouveaux romans specially, with Robbe-Grillet works, and the theater of the absurd specially with beckett's works. Hedayat in his meeting with the west discovers another enchantement. It comes from the screens. Abstract:
This study examines one aspect of the relationship between writers and thiers public in twentieth century France : the growing concern among French writers that a mass public and increased democratization in society were lowering the standards of literature. Our study begins by tracing the roots of this concern to the nineteenth century and to the writings of one of the first writers to address the issue in his poetics, Edgar Allan Poe. Poe believed that a mass public was a good thing for literature, but french writer interpreted Poe’s poetics as warning against the potential danger of a large and diverse public influencing writers. This perception of Poe Set the stage for symbolist poets to argue that writers should no cater to a large public and should remain as far removed as possible from the masses. Paul Valéry is one of the greatest spokesmen for this approach and we chronicle his writings on literature and culture approach. Our study suggests that writers like Valéry were in fact very successful and literature itself quite popular and influential in society during this period because of the crucial role that literary critics played as mediators between inaccessible and difficult writers like Valéry and a mass public. This popularity allowed writers like Valery to develop political notions that were widely sirulated such as his definition of Europe and proposals about cultural exchange. Our study concludes by examining literary prorams on the radio in the 1930s and 1940s, which were largely created and maintained, not by writers but by literary critics. Their efforts, along with writings (like those of Valery) promoting “difficult” literature and refined civilization, helped writers to maintain their influence and popularity in France until after World War II

The objective of this work is to study the myth of the double as character in the novel The Double, of Jose Saramago, published in 2002. To explain the form of this myth in the Contemporarity we cover the trajectory of the myth since the sprouting of the reason and the conscience of itself in the beginning of the man. As hypothesis, we understand the myth of the double as non-separable part of the nature human being who will follow the evolution of the artistic phenomena, since the first representations in the walls of the caves until the fragmentary art contemporary, being its literary construction impregnated by the historical and social-cultural modifications, transforming the literary language into instrument of critical and metalanguage. To justify the study of the myth to be the primordial form of narration, oral in principle, suffering to a mutation to be registered for the writing, losing the sacred character and acquiring literary contours. It is in this aspect that we observe the transformation of the myth, more specifically, from the work of Edgar Allan Poe, the short story William Wilson, chosen for its importance in the formatting of a double modern, fruit of a society that entries for the Modern Age for the Industrial Revolution and its consequences, such as the growth of the cities and the massification of the population; until the romance The Double, presenting a double in search of an identity that if presents unstable. Analyzing the double while character, we verify the influences of the historical and social-cultural factors in its composition, beyond its relation with the author and the narrator of the literary text, the some voices that if face in the narrative and propitiate to look at intent disclosing the double that if it projects in these relations and it constructs a multifaceted text

Abstract:
This study aims at clarifying the connections between Raymond QUENEAU’s prose works and the narratives from the English-speaking world which he read and listed from 1917 to 1938. On the basis of a rational perusal of QUENEAU’s reading lists, we first delineated a group of ten writers who announce or epitomize literary modernity and whose writings reveal a concurrence, both precocious and lasting, with the French writer’s own texts (Edgar Allan POE, Lewis CARROLL, Joseph CONRAD, Henry JAMES, James JOYCE, William FAULKNER, Gertrude STEIN, Ernest HEMINGWAY, Henry MILLER, Erskine CALDWELL). This empirical foundation having been firmly established, we were then able to go beyond the links which have been widely discussed in current criticism and to identify less detectable and sometimes underrated relations. Within that framework we investigated several issues : how does QUENEAU express his literary originality against the background of modern poetics where the basic features of classical fiction are thoroughly undermined because of the doubt cast upon the validity of meaningful representation? Once seen in the company of his favourite English-speaking authors, how does Queneau use the art of writing to outline an ontology of anxiety when facing the possible annihilation of both mundane reality and beings?

Abstract:
This thesis is a corpus centred round jules verne's voyages extraordinaires and its coherence is meant to be psychothematic : travelling is seen as an exploration of death, and writing as an imaginary journey. Thus, travelling is not merely a dream of exhausting what a map of the world may offer, but also a dream of utopias : the utopias of the extraneous, of love, of the future, of a harmony between nature and society - such utopias are forced into the para- doxical exorcism which the various counter-utopias have formed: a moral evil explored by detective of fantastic narratives, a political evil seen as a repre- hension of desires and as the oppression inflicted by history- meanwhile science-fiction tries to see through a hazardous future. Hence our preference for the various aspects of the literature of limits, which, aware that the world is only our weltanschaaumg, is quite heedless of the rules of a reducing pseudo-realism. Therefore, the wonderful, the fantastic, science-fiction, utopias and counter-utopias, poetry and the exploration of death are as many ways of expressing not the preposterousness but the infinite significance of the world. Let transcendency begin with writing, such was, perhaps, our clew, from the first to the last of these texts

Brown, Natalie. "Missing Homes: Poe, Brontë, Dickens and Displacement." Thesis, 2021. https://doi.org/10.7916/d8-h5bv-yp77.

Full text
Abstract:
“Missing Homes” examines three nineteenth-century authors whose experiences of displacement from home, professions and/or class influenced their literary innovations. Displacement is not a new theme to scholars of nineteenth-century literature, who have established it as a defining experience of an era characterized by financial crises, industrial development, migration and empire. However, scholarship on displacement has often focused on how novels train readers to manage the experience of displacement and has depicted the emotions like nostalgia that arise from it as potentially compensatory or reconciliatory to the dynamics of capitalism. “Missing Homes” departs from these narratives to explore authors who found displacement anything but manageable or liberating and whose works illustrate a more unstable spectrum of emotional responses to displacement and its dire long-term consequences. Attention to these authors, I argue, offers a parallel theory of nostalgia in which the unsettled longing for a place to call home registers political discontent with the relationship between the individual and the collective rather than reconciles the individual to displacement. Departing from critics who have focused primarily on the work performed by metaphors and figures of the domestic, “Missing Homes” engages in biographical readings of the lives, economic circumstances and fiction of Edgar Allan Poe, Charlotte Brontë and Charles Dickens to show how they pursued fantasies of securing homes that could remove them from undesirable personal, economic and political conditions. The failures of these fantasies reveal how conventional narratives describing how individuals might attain security often fail in the face of collective economic conditions in which attaining objects like a home is both economically challenging and often emotionally unfulfilling. Although the variables of their lives were different, I suggest that these authors’ stories of displacement fail to perform therapeutic or intervening work, because the problem of displacement is rooted in material conditions that narrative innovation alone cannot resolve. Instead, readers should derive from these texts and their failures the need for more collective forms of security.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The stories inscribed in the Gothic period have become a source for readers to have access to mysterious events and eerie circumstances that, through an intimate view into the relationship between the living and the dead/undead, reveal a deeper meaning of personal, social and cultural concerns. In the stories “Ligeia” (1838) and “Berenice” (1835), Edgar Allan Poe describes the agonizing death of young beautiful females, which stirs a morbid and romantic interest in readers. In these stories, the lover is an observer of the beloved’s death who becomes aware of the presence of death in life. The woman who agonizes and dies turns into a disturbing force which threatens the man’s understanding of life and death.

Madeira, Pedro Daniel Gomes. "Three chapters in the history of femicide." Doctoral thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/46367.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation describes the genesis of the idea of femicide in a period of English and American Letters, the last decade of the eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century, in which patriarchal values and constructions were entering a crisis which resulted in the revision of the idea of gender—in a way, that was the period in which the concept of gender was coded. In the first chapter, I look at the way the term femicide was first given currency in the English language in 1827 through Robert Macnish’s The Confessions of an Unexecuted Femicide, a fiction disguised as a true story, and how it spawned a short-lived literary sub-genre. In the second chapter, I examine Poe’s reworking of the femicide story, and to the ways in which he has drawn attention to its Gothic roots. Finally, in the third chapter, I offer a reading of Memoirs of the Author of ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Woman,’ in which I argue that Godwin’s “sentimentalised” portrait of Mary Wollstonecraft, and by extension of the female intellectual, constitutes an implicit refutation of her ideas, and therefore can be profitably compared to the portraits Poe’s femicide narrators make of Morella and Ligeia in the tales named after them.
