Lowmansville: Poems is a collection of poems exploring a mythic location in southern Appalachia, which bears the name of an actual community in Kentucky but is not intended to be a literal depiction of that community. Abstract:
This creative thesis is a collection of original poems entitled Other. The poems in Other reflect my study of the aesthetics of poetry as well as that of how women are represented as poets and as the subject of poems. Some of these poems are the product of my particular interest in the use of persona. Most reflect my desire to achieve self-reflection, to write from my experiences and perception, while still maintaining the universality that is an essential element of successful poems. The critical introduction situates my poems within the framework of the poetic mode Personal Classicism—poetry

Abstract:
This mini-dissertation examines selected poems by three female poets who deal with what I have termed ‘the personal’ in relation to specifically female concerns in their poetry, namely Anne Sexton, Antjie Krog and Finuala Dowling. There has been a considerable rise in personal and autobiographical writing in the last few decades, and this trend shows no sign of decreasing. This kind of writing has provoked much heated debate, both regarding its content and its style(s). Many critics and poets, such as Robert Lowell or James Dickey, disapprove of the frankness with which female poets discuss su

Abstract:
The following is a collection of original poetry, supplemented by a critical introduction tracing biographical, literary, and theoretical influences. The critical introduction takes the form of a series of loosely connected notes. The poems are divided into two major sections. I begin by discussing the difficulties involved in writing an overarching introduction to a collection which was never intended to be a cohesive whole, that is to say, a group of individual poems rather than a themed collection or sequence. I examine some of the influences on my work, including other poets and authors.

Abstract:
Something Blue is a collection of poems that explore the physicality of relationships. ?Light on Lake Michigan,? the first poem in the manuscript, explores a mother?s suicide by drowning. In the title poem, ?Something Blue,? the speaker finds out an ex-lover has married and wonders if his abuse has continued with his new wife. ?Fourteen? and ?Purge? examine the objectification of bodies that today?s teenage girls inflict upon themselves. The poems are mostly written in free verse, with careful attention paid to line and stanza lengths and internal rhythm.

This collection is the result of an exciting approach to the study of creative writing by an academic institution. The opportunity to obtain a Masters Degree for the writing of poetry helped to energise my efforts to put together fifty-three new and unpublished poems. Abstract:
The best kind of poem, I think, is that which delights readers by drawing them toward another world, whether that world is located closer to the real or closer to the fantastic. Perhaps delight at being drawn toward another world is the criterion of excellence for all creative work, not specifically poems. Nevertheless, this criterion has become, through my writing of the present poems, my guiding principle as a poet. My poems, if they succeed, are windows to other worlds. Because these worlds are not, and cannot be, wholly developed in individual poems, readers see in each poem only a part of

"Using the structure of the liturgical calendar and the lives of the saints for inspiration, Kevin Brown explores not only faith, but subjects ranging from love to childhood and from grammar to grace. The saints' backgrounds serve as metaphors for our lives today, as we struggle with our mortality and our morality. In these poems, Brown is able to laugh at himself and his failings while reminding us of our own. He points out where our various approaches to faith make us better people and where we fail to follow what we tell others to do. In these poems, the miraculous becomes ordinary even as

Abstract:
Stubborn Work is a collection of poems about definition and uncertainty. The poems herein probe the concept of a continuous self in the face of an ever-shifting landscape. In this work foundations of self-identity, family identity, gender, home, place, and (at the hands of a psychological disorder) even reality itself are shaken and called into question. Over and over, in lieu of every new shift, the poet attempts to re-write themselves—to ask, continually, what it means to move forward after each new shift, and remark on how the past always follows closely behind, directing the course.
