Pavani, Monica <1968>. "In the skin of another : Anne Michaels', Sujata Bhatt's and Adrienne Rich's dramatic monologues as embodiments of painter Paula Modersohn-Becker."

Full textThe thesis studies the works of English war poet Isaac Rosenberg (1890-1918) with the main aim of analysing the influence of his pictorial training on his poetic production, an aspect which has been generally acknowledged, but scarcely investigated by critics. The first three chapters examine the social, cultural and artistic context in which Rosenberg lived before enlisting in the army; in particular, the focus is on the Jewish community of London’s East End, the involvement in the First World War, and the art scene of the early Twentieth century. The study also considers the art school he attended, the Slade, his limited pictorial production, and his thoughts on aesthetics, as included in the letters and prose. The fourth chapter, core of the thesis, proposes an analysis of the poems which aims to show how Rosenberg exploited his experience as a painter in his writing, especially in the war poetry. Among the identified strategies are the symbolic use of colours, the imagery related to light and shadow, the adoption of a particular perspective, the fusion of abstract and concrete. These techniques are seen as attempts to respond to the difficulty of representing and communicating war experience.

Full textAs exemplified by recent works (Contro le radici; Rootedness; The philosopher’s plant), the image of the root recurs very often in contemporary metaphorology. This figure is used not only in politics in order to communicate a relationship between culture and groundedness, but also in other fields. More precisely, the vegetal metaphor is a paradigm through which contemporary philosophers and writers depict the relation between man and the world. This inquiry starts from Heidegger’s stance. According to him, a valuable work of art has to be rooted in the native land of the artist. The aim of this work is to highlight the controversial aspects of this statement through the work of Andrea Zanzotto. Although he is the most “rooted” poet in Italian literature, his poetics is related to a philosophical questioning that leads to doubt of the interdependence between authenticity and groundedness. Therefore, the discovery of a reality without any center is reflected by peculiar images and figures. The lexicon used to describe is very close to the botanical and geological metaphors used by philosophers like Deleuze, Guattari, Glissant. Thanks to a methodology founded on phenomenology and aesthetics, this survey wants to offer a new interpretation of Zanzotto’s poetry and prose.

Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2018. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/8474/1/Maltese_Giulia_tesi.pdf.
Full textThe goal of this dissertation is to propose a critical study of contemporary Sahrawi poetry in Spanish (from 1972) by elaborating a corpus-based analytical model which insists on the osmosis between the poet’s autobiographical and the collective experiences of the Sahrawi people, the latter being considered as the basis of identitarian consciousness. To achieve this main goal, the following specific objectives have been accomplished: (1) the contextualization of the phenomenon by defining its historical-political, anthropological and cultural dynamics; (2) the definition of the theoretical bases of the corpus-based analytical model; (3) the application of the analytical model to a selection of representative texts from monographs and anthologies. Thus, the present dissertation combines a descriptive conceptual approach with an empirical experimental focus: first, by deepening the historical, anthropological, political, linguistic and cultural dynamics that define the Sahrawi identity, second by developing the corpus-based analytical model. The latter aims to trace the discursive manifestations of the polyphonic nature of the poetic I in its attempt to rewrite a collective biography (multi-biography) that switches between autobiography and autofiction. This is done mainly by integrating the Critical Discourse Analysis with the pragmalinguistic approach and by using some corpus linguistics tools. The complex macro-concept of identity has therefore been implemented in several approaches and disciplines. In the specific case of the Sahrawi people identity entails an even more complex reflection on the stages and spaces of the colonization, the occupation, the Algerian exile and the diaspora. Moreover, within this context, identity also comprehends three different meanings: the national identity, the political identity and the cultural identity. In this sense, Sahrawi's contemporary poetry in Spanish becomes the mouthpiece of the Sahrawi people, claiming their national identity as a bridge between intimate and communitarian aspirations, ultimately providing a tool for both intimate and communitarian self-recognition and resistance.

Full textStarting from a wide investigation in the literary reviews in the '30s, the research has focused on the major magazines, for which hermetic poets and critics worked. The correspondence between poets and editors in chief and members of the editorial staff has proved extremely interesting; the most meaningful letters, especially the unpublished ones, are presented in the thesis. Many critic-theoretic documents and some rare poetries by Mario Luzi (never collected nor published by critics) are also reproduced. Moreover lyrics by various poets, such as Mario Luzi, Umberto Saba, Carlo Betocchi, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Salvatore Quasimodo, Alessandro Parronchi, have been anthologised (with text transcription and apparatus criticus below); all of them present some changes in text compared to the final version, printed in volume. This analysis represents, at least, the third part of the thesis.

Full textThe research presented here concerns the analysis of the poetic writing of three contemporary Italian women writers: Antonella Anedda (1955), Patrizia Cavalli (1947) and Mariangela Gualtieri (1951). We decided to approach this corpus on the basis of certain theories of Lacanian psychoanalysis. The starting hypothesis rests on the idea that poetic text, because of its particular status within language, needs to be examined on the basis of scrupulous reflection on the relation between the unconscious and language. We have developed a notion of poetic text that is based on two major approaches by Jacques Lacan, namely the unconscious as the space of the subject manque-à-être and the unconscious parlêtre. From this point on, we have defined the text as the place of coexistence of two distinct universes: that of the Symbolic, which refers to the incessant sliding of the subject on the chain of signifiers, and that of the Real, which is singular, opaque and indecipherable lalangue, which inhabits every speaking being. It has therefore proved necessary to question the issues of enunciation and interpretation in depth. The Lacanian concept of pas-tout, closely linked to the feminine question, has guided us in the formulation of an ethic of reading the text that aims not to neglect its real, corporeal and irreducible dimension. We then tested our approach through the analysis of the chosen poetic corpus. Examining the specific mode of enunciation of each of the three poets referred to has allowed us to give a voice to three major exemples of contemporary Italian poetry. The writings of Anedda, Cavalli and Gualtieri have thus established themselves not only as three completely original experiments in the panorama of Italian poetry of recent years, but above all as three complex and different answers in relation to the issues of contemporary subjectivity

Full textThe present study intends to propose an original reinterpretation of Nomellini's painting, based on a critical path centered on the iconographies of work. This analysis is chronologically limited to the first phase of his activity: from the Florentine beginnings, around 1886, to the participations in the Venice Biennale in the 1907 and 1909 editions. Thus we intend to define an ideal catalog of works dedicated to the theme of work capable of retrace and clarify that aesthetic-ideological evolution already highlighted by Ragghianti, which had led several artists initially inspired by humanitarian social ideals, first towards an "idealist signification" of a D'Annunzian character and then adherence to a nationalist and "imaginative mythography ". A development that in Nomellini's case starts from paintings that portray the peasants of the Maremma according to a humanitarian social perspective and with a style still poised between naturalism and the representation of a new sense of light, and which finds a provisional point of arrival in the Genoese canvases of declared social criticism, made with the pointillist technique. If Nomellini's symbolist turning point also entails the disappearance of the theme of work from his painting, the iconography of work reappears again in Nomellini's production of the first decade of the twentieth century, transfigured, however, by a new ideological perspective aimed at a nationalist mythization of the world of work and workers and faced with a mature divisionism.

Full textMario Luzi and Giacinto Spagnoletti were major figures of the 20th century literary milieu. Luzi, in particular, was among the most important representatives of the Florentine Hermetic literary circle. Given the prestige of the two characters, it is possible to easily understand the documentary and historical value of the present study, whose aim is to report on the letters written by the poet from Castello to the critic from Taranto. The letters cover a time span of more than a half century, from 1941 to 1993, and are reported integrally for the first time. As proof of their importance, suffice it to say that some of the letters were partially quoted by Stefano Verdino, editor of the volume Mario Luzi. L’opera poetica [Mario Luzi. Poetical works] published in 1998 in the collection «I Meridiani» by Mondadori, containing a section entitled Cronologia in which Verdino quotes them in order to draw a very detailed biographical sketch of the poet. The reported autograph texts are kept, but not yet catalogued, in the library of the Schlesinger Foundation, in Lugano. The present research study has proved very challenging and interesting, especially the part concerning the contextualization of references, the reconstruction of events and the identification of works and characters, who are often referred to through nicknames (explained in the footnotes and in the section “Annotazioni” [‘Notes’] at the bottom of every letter). The reading of the correspondence between coeval literary characters and the consultation of the most important reviews of the time proved of primary importance for the analysis of the letters. The mentioned research made it possible to report integrally and, hopefully, to preserve for future memory, Luzi’s 163 letters, which, besides testifying a more than 50-year-long friendship between Luzi and Spagnoletti, provide useful information about relevant events and characters of the literary and, more generally, intellectual entourage of the time (publishing industries, literary competitions, universities, newspapers and journals, etc.). Of particular critical and philological interest proved the letters in which Luzi describes his modus operandi to his friend and reveals the tormented phases of his prose and poetic production, thus providing even the reader with the key to enter his precious literary ‘workshop’. Of the same relevance are the letters in which Luzi becomes a critic of the work of his addressee, who was not only an author of anthologies and ‘militant’ reviews, but also of novels and poems of which Luzi was an attentive reader and the first, sometimes unrelenting, critical mentor. If the great value of these texts is to be acknowledged firstly from a documentary and historic point of view, it must also be underlined that they are of great relevance because of the personal and private information they provide. In other circumstances Giacinto Spagnoletti himself stated that ‘we could not get [that information] from any other sources’ [“non conosceremmo da altra fonte”]; the most evident contribution given by the letters is to provide the scholars with information which integrate and complete the official biographies of the two writers, thus helping to better understand some autobiographical and intimist issues which can only be found in the embryonic phase in their literary production.
BOTTA, GIOVANNI. "JACQUES MARITAIN E GEORGES ROUAULT." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/6440.
Full textThe research I conducted was made possible by a process of recovery of unpublished correspondence between Jacques Maritain and Georges Rouault. The fund Rouault-Maritain is currently located in the Archives of the Foundation Georges Rouault in Paris. The correspondence of Rouault is the result of a donation of Antoinette Grunelius Isabelle Rouault, coming in part from the Archives of Maritain Kolbsheim. The hard work of recovery of the matches, which lasted three years, was made possible thanks to the active assistance of the grandchildren of Rouault in Paris. The correspondence consists of 104 letters (some of these very long) and a smaller corpus of letters (30) between the Maritain and family Rouault. The first difficulty that the survey was required to decipher the handwriting of Georges Rouault, of difficult intelligibility. It is therefore repertoriata a grid to orient the morphology of the characters tend adopted by Rouault so as to favor the slow work of understanding. All letters have been cataloged chronologically and through an identification code. The letters are cited according to this code, and the context shows always the sender and the recipient. Another difficulty encountered is the syntactic structure of the correspondence is not clear and sometimes wrong; the speed and urgency are the recurrent features of the epistolary style of Rouault, at least against Maritain. This difficulty has therefore given rise to extra work that involved the whole family Rouault to provide a precise meaning to each letter. The third phase of the work has been to the contextualization of each letter by identifying the circumstances and implicit allusions. All this was accompanied by explanatory footnotes. For the case of the letters of Jacques Maritain, the situation was much smoother thanks to the well-known calligraphy clarity of the philosopher. The correspondence has unearthed new information has emerged that make substantial additions biographical and that illuminate many aspects of the fraternal relationship and friendship between Georges Rouault and Jacques Maritain and their respective families. The last part of the research is focused in the analysis of the correspondence and in the discovery of 4 convergence of poetic philosophical nature between Rouault and Maritain since the new aspects found in the biography and letters from their works.
MARCHESI, VALENTINA BARBARA. "LE PROSE CRITICHE DI EUGENIO MONTALE." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/1037.
Full textEugenio Montale (1896-1981) has been a literary critic as long as he lived. Since 1920 till death, Montale worked together with many newspapers and with the most important literary reviews of his period. In 1948 was assumed at «Corriere della sera», in Milan: here he became a journalist as a job and dedicated himself to disclosure Italian and European literature, with a particular attention for English and French ones. This essay analyzes his critical proses, identifying their main themes: authors and books reviewed, themes and cultural issues which Montale wrote about as long as he wrote. Some figures of writers, critics and philosophers (Sergio Solmi, Emilio Cecchi, Benedetto Croce, Roberto Bazlen) represent the ideal boundaries for an idea of poetry, which Montale points in his proses: communicating with these figures, he reflects upon the main issues of contemporary culture and literature. Montale’s critical style can infact be placed between journalism and literary criticism. In the last part of this essays it has been tried to find out some important junctions between literary essays, narrative proses and poetry, living all together in Montale’s activity.

Full textThis work aims to study the first literary production of Monaldo Leopardi (1176-1847), Giacomo Leopardi’s father, according to a cultural and historical point of view. Initially, we rebuilt the relationship between Monaldo Leopardi and his family with the Society of Jesus (XVI-XVIII Century), pointing out the model of «Christian hero» he embodied during his jesuitical homeschooling. Then, we analysed Monaldo Leopardi’s literary production (1800-1806) considering three different aspects: first of all, the connection with the Italian Accademie that we investigated thanks to archives resources, with a special focus on the Accademia dei Disuguali Placidi Ravvivati (1801-1803) he founded; afterwards, we studied his poetic and theatrical works referring to the volume "Opere del conte Monaldo Leopardi Gonfallonieri da Recanati" (1803). Finally, we decided to examine the development of this literary production with main Christian traits, by comparing father’s and son’s literature and by focussing on the journal “La Voce della Ragione” (1832-1835) and the letters between Monaldo and the jesuitical general Jan Philip Roothaan.
DI, MAIO FABRIZIO. "L'opera di Ottiero Ottieri." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Roma "Tor Vergata", 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2108/1284.
Full textThe subject of this thesis concerns the Ottieriâ s literary work from his first novel Memorie dellâ incoscienza (1954) to Una irata sensazione di peggioramento (2002), analysing three themes which come over his poetry: industry, sanatorium and politics. The thesis is planned on seven chapters. In the introduction, the characteristics of Ottieriâ s novels are developed: original and unclassifiable, Ottieri has organized an extensive literary project through thirty works connected by a continuous plot of themes and leitmotivs which are linked on different subject as Italian and European literature, history, psychiatry, art, politics. In the first chapter, the Ottieriâ s youthful devotion to fascism is analysed in the light of his own memories (Memorie dellâ incoscienza), an autobiographic novel in which an alter ego (Lorenzo Bandini) analyses the dramatic issues of Italy during the Second World War. In the second chapter the emergent theme concerns the industrial world through four works (two novels: Tempi stretti and Donnarumma allâ assalto, the diary La linea gotica and the play I venditori di Milano) which allow him to be the â pioneerâ of Italian industrial literature. From the third to the fifth chapter, the principal theme which comes over is mental illness; depression, schizophrenia, alienation are bound to be the centre of his literary works and not only of his life. The sixth chapter studies two novels, La storia del PSI and Il poema osceno, which are the summary of his political ideas. The seventh chapter is about the last works of Ottieri; aware of his imminent death, the poet describes his life as a borderline individual and as an unsuccessful writer.
RONDENA, ELENA. "La letteratura concentrazionaria." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/290.
Full textSuch a long time has passed since the end of the Shoah and it has become clear that there are a lot of works written in those years which now form the corpus of literature based on the experiences in concentration camps. The authors of these works are not very well-known and they are usually considered minor but their works have often reached highly intellectual, moral and stylistic results. The narration of their traumatic memories is the result of precise decisions, i.e. what to tell, in what chronological order, but especially in what forms. The texts based on the experiences in concentration camps can in fact be studied from different points of view. The most unusual is their study through genres: short story, autobiography, essay, novel, journal, letter, poetry. The distinction between one genre and another is not often clear-cut. What is interesting to underline is that in front of a tragedy, as the Holocaust was, it is possible to choose to tell one's own experience by paying special attention to the way of expressing it. This is evidence that in front of evil man does not ever lose the desire to look for truth and beauty.
