Abstract:
An important model in the study of electron-atom collisions was development by Temkin and Poet. Although the model has been used to test many theories and approximation methods, the novel method of solution used by Poet has not been developed further to any great extent. The Temkin-Poet model of electron scattering simplifies the three-body scattering problem by suppressing all angular dependence of the wavefunction. In this thesis we return to Poet's method and apply it to a range of calculations for the hydrogen-isoelectronic series. Firstly it is demonstrated that the method provides high-precision solutions for elastic and inelastic scattering. these solutions will then be used to investigate various aspects of electron scattering including the ionisation of hydrogen in the near-threshold region, resonant states in helium, and the scaling of elastic cross sections for a number of hydrogen-like ions.

Lockhart, Paul G. "Geopolitics, Borders, and Federalism: Challenges for Post-War Iraq." TopSCHOLAR®, 2014. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1443.

Full text
Abstract:
The fall of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I enabled the victorious Western powers to implement the Sykes-Picot Treaty and reshape the geopolitical structure of the Middle East. The imposition of arbitrary borders on the Middle East region, specifically the state of Iraq, would lead to significant conflicts over the course of the 20th century. In 2003, a US-led invasion would further compound the instability and sectarian conflict within Iraq by completely dismantling the state. In the years after the invasion, the United States has been directly involved unsuccessfully in trying to rebuild and stabilize the state of Iraq. The goal of this study is to propose and analyze four options for the future geopolitical structure of Iraq that, by design, could maintain the current geopolitical borders and possibly contribute to stability in the Middle East. A qualitative approach that examines the benefits of different models of government is used to identify themes that may apply to the state of Iraq, Because adoption of any of the proposed options depends on choices that must be made by the Iraqi government, this thesis presents only a theoretical argument about the country’s likely future. It is my contention that the most likely route to achieving long-term political stability within Iraq is implementation of a federalist model of government that resembles the Swiss model. The Swiss model provides a framework to create ethnic tolerance through specific power devolution, internal cooperation, and conflict resolution between the different tribal and ethnic groups within each region, and external cooperation and adjudication of issues between the regions and the central government. This study’s results show that the different options analyzed all have positive and negative characteristics. The three-region Swiss model provided an exceptional framework and addressed a number of Iraq’s problems, but elements of the other models could be implemented into the three-region model to create a more stable state. Further analysis is needed to determine the best model of government to stabilize Iraq.

Liu, Xin. "Port choice : a frequency-based container assignment model." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/10574.

Full text
Abstract:
The process of containerization has connected the world with a cost-effective freight service, successfully forming a competitive global market. Mixed freight shipping has changed dramatically due to containerization and globalization. The port system has experienced a tough time keeping pace with globalisation in terms of its roles and functions in liner shipping. Consequently, port choice has become a challenging problem to analyse with many stakeholders and complex circumstances. The literature formulating the basis of this maritime container assignment model can be identified as a combination of port choice modelling, a freight flow model and empty container repositioning. It is observed that the maritime container assignment problem shares a greater affinity with transit assignment than with traffic assignment conventionally applied freight in the four step approach, because containers are generally carried by shipping lines which operate services on fixed routes or port rotations. A model capable of representing full and empty container flows at a global level would be useful to almost every stakeholder in the container liner shipping industry, such as shippers, shipping lines, port authorities, terminal operating companies, regional and national planning authorities, marine insurance companies, and others. The classic frequency-based transit assignment approach of Spiess and Florian is transferred and applied to maritime containers as the foundation for a global maritime container assignment model. The first version of this model assigned full and empty containers to routes to minimise expected travel time, which consists of sailing time between ports and dwell time at intermediate transhipment ports. Service frequency and port capacity influence the pattern of full and empty container flows and therefore port choice. In this thesis, the model is further developed to fit the reality of container liner shipping by minimising expected cost rather than expected travel time. The objective is now to assign container flows to routes to minimize the sailing costs and expected dwell costs at the origin port and intermediate transhipment ports. The constraints included are extended to include the maximum number of containers each route can carry. Finally, the capabilities of the cost-based container assignment model are explored through a case study of the Europe-Far East trade lane. A range of strategy and policy options, such as a shipping line planning a new route or modifying an existing route and a port authority considering expansion, are simulated. A possible approach to model validation through independent data is proposed. Recommendations for future research are provided at the end of the thesis. Many aspects are covered in the thesis; an origin-destination matrix estimation, automated virtual (task) network construction from routes and schedules, improvements to the probability distribution used for ship arrivals, a validation procedure, and model extension from port-to-port movements to door-to-door container movements.

Abstract:
Today, freight volumes on roads have gone up to a level that there is a need for alternative transport modes. Short Sea Shipping (SSS) is one alternative with a potential that can help reduce the high traffic on roads. Most SSS systems use vessels whereby cargo is rolled on and off using a ramp with very small capacities usually less than 500 TEU, but with increasing cargo traffic, it is not clear if such solutions will be efficient. For ports involved in SSS to meet up this new wave of change, the challenge to make appropriate investments and analysis tools is important. The type of vessel suitable for a SSS operation (such as roll-on roll-off (RoRo), lift-on lift-off (LoLo) etc) has been addressed in this thesis based on their compatibility and cost effectiveness with the terminal equipments. The purpose of this study is to develop an optimization model that can be incorporated into a Computer Decision Support System (DSS) for selecting equipments including ships at a strategic level for investments in handling unitised cargo at port terminals in the context of Short Sea Shipping (SSS). The main contribution of the thesis is the application of computer science techniques in the domain of strategic decision making related to the configuration of complex systems (e.g. interrelationships between ships and equipments) with choices of handling equipment. From modelling the selection of port terminal equipments for SSS, we realised that while integer linear programming is a promising approach for studying such systems, it remains a challenge to handle complex issues in depth especially in relation to the quay crane due to interdependencies between time, cost and capacity of equipments. Model results indicates that a LoLo vessel with a capacity between (500 and 1000 TEU) capable of completing a SSS voyage such that handling is done within 48 hours will be less costly than a RoRo that does it with multiple voyages or one voyage each for multiple RoRo vessels for TEU volumes greater than 1000. But RoRo vessels remain useful for trailers that cannot be transported by LoLo vessels. containers.<br>Lotsgatan 14 374 35, Karlshamn Mobile: 0046 768 85 67 13

Mokheseng, Mokheseng Johnny. "A model for the efficient strategic management of the port of Ngqura." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/417.

Full text
Abstract:
Ports are the backbone of the economy of countries endowed with shorelines and they spearhead foreign trade through the importation and exportation of goods to and from their domestic markets. The newly constructed Port of Ngqura will be the outlet for exports of semi-finished and finished goods produced in the Coega IDZ and will also receive raw material to be processed. Its position at the center of the world’s main trade routes, equidistant from American, European and the Pacific Rim regions makes the Coega IDZ the ideal location for any manufacturer adding value to raw materials, components and producing goods bound for the world markets. Traditionally the ports have been developed and operated by the government enterprises. Recently all these are changing in many countries all over the world, with more private participation in the development and operations of the ports. This evolution has entrusted Port Authorities in taking control over port planning, broad regulation of shipping and port operations, applying conventions, laws and rules. South Africa is no exception to these winds of change, hence the adoption of the new port bill in managing all ports in the country. The Port of Ngqura will then serve as a benchmark for all other ports, with a new management structure which will help the port to be efficient. The study addresses the model for the efficient strategic management of the Port of Ngqura. The model looks into placing the Port of Ngqura ahead of its competitors through efficiency in port management and operations. Efficient ports are catalysts, facilitators and attractors of international sea borne trade. Competitive efficiency is achieved by employing the best suited port equipments, facilities and technology to cater for customer’s needs and requirements. A successful port must be able to constantly adopt new roles in order to cope with the ever changing market environment.

Qokweni, Noluvuyolwetu. "A creativity model to increase employee productivity." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/5401.

Full text
Abstract:
For business firms to continue as going concerns, productivity is a primary goal. In order for the firms to remain productive, it is imperative that managers continuously explore ways of improving productivity and employee performance. Employee productivity, in particular, is the measurement of performance and competitiveness in any business firm. A competitive advantage enables a business firm to, amongst others, survive financially, expand its operations and grow its market share. Creativity and innovation are fundamental sources of competitive advantage. In order for a business to retain its competitive edge, it must effectively enhance employee productivity, creativity and innovation. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate a creativity model that could contribute to the enhancement of employee productivity. More specifically, the study investigated how employee productivity (the dependent variable) was influenced by the independent variables rewards, a climate conducive for creativity and innovation, employee creativity, self-esteem and performance intent. The sample consisted of 82 blue-collar employees from various manufacturing firms in Port Elizabeth. The empirical results revealed that the firms’ rewards for performance and their climates for creativity and innovation were positively related to the creativity of their employees. The creativity and self-esteem of their employees were positively related to their employees’ performance intentions, while collectively these three variables were positively related to their employees’ productivity. The managerial implications of these and other findings are discussed in the study.

Audo, S. "Development of a dynamic model for strategic port planning and investment." Thesis, Cranfield University, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/1826/3696.

Full text
Abstract:
Different levels of congesti'on are 'encountered in ports all over the world and particularly in developing countries. Depending on the volume of traffic flow over time, the changes of development in the economy and industrial activity and the random arrival and service pattern of ships; the optimum berthing capacity resulting in minimum cost at any future time period has to be determined to avoid undesirable repercussions. The existing methods fail to provide the links between the aggregate economy, demand and optimal berthing capacity for all time periods of the planning horizon, and conventional techniques based on static frameworks are used to arrive at optimal strategies for specific times into the future. This study is an attempt to remedy those difficulties and relate future demand to optimal berthing capacity in an interactive dynamic fashion. Three models are developed: a forecasting model linking seaborne trade to gross domestic product, population, productions consumption and elasticity of demand;, a simulation model relating the various demand levels to different port configurations; and an investment model relating the resulting congestion cost to capital cost, where an optimal strategy in berthing capacity is achieved for the years 19859 19909 1995 and 2000. The last model has been extended using the above mentioned points in time to result in an optimal berthing capacity for any future time period within the planning horizon 1985 - 2000. This model is validated through forecasting, simulating and appraising the 1992 and 1998 results and reducing the amount, costs and time of work by 75 per cent.

Roh, Hong-Seung. "Establishing a generic systems model of port clusters and their associated port logistics process." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2006. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54265/.

Full text
Abstract:
Ports are playing an ever pivotal role in the development and operation of industrial supply chains. Port management has historically been reactive to legislative and customer pressures. Such a reactive approach has resulted in ad hoc infrastructure development including physical facilities and information technology. Ports may thus be viewed as large scale complex systems where there is a need to define a more holistic perspective of their design and operations. Recent developments in the construct of port clusters and maritime clusters have led to increased complexity. The advantage in these developments is that greater integration between the port and associated services and users in the supply chain in port should be realised. However, there is a need to apply appropriate industrial engineering tools and techniques in order to visualise such clusters as whole systems without the need for excessively complex models. Such visualisations will help in developing our understanding of the interrelationships between the various parts and aid in the development of structured design methods. The thesis presents a structured analysis and design technique (SADT) in order to visualise a port cluster as a system of systems wherein hierarchy lies. This research identifies a port cluster and within that a port logistics process. SADT has been chosen as there are readily available software tools to aid in the visualisation and it provides a robust structured method by which to model hierarchical systems. This study applies SADT to the port cluster system that has distributed around the Port of Busan in Korea but has not been organised systematically. This dissertation shows that SADT does provide an opportunity to define and analyse the cluster in terms of the port logistics process, port activities and actors. In conjunction with the calculation of the industrial productivity of the cluster, it will be able to distinguish who could be the leading industry or leading company in the cluster. Finally, the results of the industrial productivity analysis also will be express using SADT diagram, so that it could provide the clear picture which industry/business should be the leader in each port logistics process.

Abstract:
This monograph could also be called by: elements and subsidies to a model of management and automation of the Brazilian ports, because its initial objective was to propose a model of the port processes. There was an expectation that the implantation of the system would occur in a short time. However, the desired model would only be ready after its implantation and being in operation. This new scene would make possible the reduction of logistic costs and the rational use of the mesh of transports, with the increment of the cabotage and inland navegation, using the Technology of the Communication and Information for rationalization of the processes and simplification of the activities of the public and private agents. Such model can be explained by the necessity of the improvement of the port operations, considering the international scenario of technology, with the increment of the automation , in which the trend is the dissemination of the electronic exchange of data (EDI Successful experiences in this direction can be evidenced in domestic territory, as the Supervia Electronic of data system (SED), used at the Ports of Santos and Rio de Janeiro. The evaluation of the model SISPORTOS proposal must be considered: it has being developed by the Departmento de Programas de Transportes Aquaviários (DEPTA). In spite of not being implanted and not being validated by the port community, the model is presented in order to subsidize new initiatives and to submit it the test. The focus will be given in the system of port management, over all in relation to that they depend on the relationship between the agents, private or public, in the diverse scopes (municipal, state and federal).

Abstract:
Magister Philosophiae - MPhil<br>Life expectancy in South African has been fluctuating following the global trends that affects both developed and developing countries. In South Africa the average life expectancy from 1994 to 1996 was higher with an average of 61,3 years. As from 1997 to 1999 it declined to an average of 58,4 years. The difference in years between 1994-1996 and 1997- 1999 was 2,9 years. From 2000-2002, life expectancy continued to decline to an average of 54,6 years. Life expectancy declined in a constant proportion from 2003-2005 and 2006-2008. In 2003-2005 it slightly declined to 52 years and in 2004-2007 it declined to 42,0 years. Life expectancy escalated after the mentioned years to 54,4 years between 2009-2011 and from 2012-2013 life expectancy was 54,0 years on average. This study examined factors or variables that verify the socioeconomic determinants of life expectancy in post-apartheid South Africa. Understanding the relationship between life expectancy and the socioeconomic variables was based on three objectives. The main objective for this study was to determine the impact of socioeconomic variables and health policy efforts on life expectancy, seeking an in-depth understanding by investigating the causality relationship between life expectancy and socioeconomic variables thus later investigating the difference between male and female’s life expectancy. This study was motivated by the fluctuating life expectancy in South Africa. The fluctuation in life expectancy were thus studied in relation to socioeconomic determinants which are government health expenditure, government education expenditure, GDP per capita, total fertility rate, urban population, access to sustainable drinking water and undernourishment. The mentioned variables were used as socioeconomic determinants of life expectancy during post-apartheid South Africa.

Mazubane, Ewart Mphilisi. "A strategic entrepreneurial model to develop females for tourism related businesses." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1188.

Abstract:
Since the inception of the new dispensation, entrepreneurship has been identified as one of the key enablers of economic participation. For this reason the government has established strategic institutions and mandated them to promote entrepreneurship in the country with the aim of increasing economic participation and entrepreneurial activities. One of the key and the fastest growing industries that have been identified as needing attention with regards to increasing participation of the women entrepreneurs is the tourism industry. There is now a noticeable growth of women entrepreneurs in this industry. They are found running bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) and conducting tours in urban areas as well as townships and rural areas. This is further evident if one looks at the value chain in the tourism sector. However, women entrepreneurs that are found in this sector are facing specific challenges that hinder their progress towards achieving sustainable businesses, especially those running or intending to run B&B businesses. Some of these challenges are sector related and some are just inherent to pursuing an entrepreneurial journey. The participation of women in the mainstream of entrepreneurship presents unique challenges as well. Women were never allowed to participate fully in the entrepreneurial activities. The latter still contributes to the challenges faced by women in their journey towards developing and operating sustainable businesses irrespective of the industry in which they operate in. Based on the above discussion, the main problem statement of this study is: To develop a strategic entrepreneurial model to enable female entrepreneurs to operate sustainable B&B businesses in the tourism industry.

Abstract:
An <i>in vivo </i>model of latent VZV was developed in the adult rat by subcutaneous injection of VZV infected cells into the left footpad. Foot reflex withdrawal responses were recorded for longer than 60 days post infection similar to changes seen in PHN patients. The aim of this study was to further characterise this model so that it could provide a useful and unique opportunity to study the host-virus interaction involved in the pathogenesis of PHN. Nested PCR was able to detect viral DNA in the different lumbar DRG. Viral DNA was present in the infected DRG as early as 24 h post infection and viremia was ruled out as no viral DNA could be detected in the blood of these animals at 24 h, 48 h and 72 h or in blood obtained at later time points. This suggested that the spread of the virus is mainly through axonal pathway. Viral DNA could not be detected in other tissues like spleen, spinal cord and brain suggested that the latent virus was limited to the peripheral nervous system. A global approach was taken to look at the transcriptional activity in the latently infected neurones by carrying out a microarray experiment. The Rat Expression Set 230A GeneChip used comprise of 15,866 known rat genes. Of the 15866 probe sets represented on the RAE 230A, 5295 probe sets were not detected (33%). 9556 genes detected on both samples, of which 332 with altered expression and 57 of them has an increase in expression. Of the 57 increased in expression, there were 32 which met the cutoff value of 50 and only 5 had a fold change of greater than 2. Among them, prostaglandin D2 synthase was found to be upregulated three fold and validation of this gene by real time PCR shows an upregulation of 2.7 fold. This study is in effect a pilot study giving a general overview of the changes within the DRG and thus provide a source of further characterisation of this model to the pathogenesis of the VZV induced allodynia.

Abstract:
Physical exercise have several health benefits, but it can also be a source of cellular damage. The energetic demands of physical exercise and training promote an increase on metabolic rate, and its pathways may produce secondary harmful compounds that will cause cellular damage. Some of those compounds are the free radicals and Reactive Oxygen species, which are highly instable molecules that react quickly, oxidizing important functional molecules such as proteins, membrane lipids and DNA, in a condition known as oxidative stress. To dampen the action of these molecules, the cells express antioxidant defence proteins. One of the most ubiquitous and polymorphic of those is the family of Gluthatione STransferases (GSTs). The great physical load of competitive training creates serious oxidative stress on athletes so, it is expected that their expression of GSTs will vary throughout the season to overcome such aggression, quickly recovering from one training session and preparing the antioxidant defence for the next one. Our main objective was to verify if the expression of a GST (GSTT1) varies throughout the season, as expected theoretically, and how it fluctuates after a competition. We also check if the distribution of the GSTM1 and GSTT1 Null/Present genotypes had some influence in the preparation and performance of our sample, consisting in 20 national level swimmers. A control group of 52 random individuals was also used to compare genotype distribution. We collected blood samples in analytic filter paper, at 5 different moments throughout the winter season. DNA was isolated from a sample of each individual, amplified by PCR for our interest genes, and ran in agarose gel by electrophoresis to genotype our 20 swimmers. RNA was isolated from all the samples of a swimmer and converted in cDNA by reverse transcriptase. The relative expression of GSTT1 was done using β-actin (a housekeeping gene) as a control gene and the first collected sample of the swimmer as control condition, by the RT-PCR technic. Three swimmers were accessed for the whole 5 moments, while eight were only evaluated their expression at 48h and 72h after competition. The results showed little influence in the distribution of genotype from swimmers to controls. The expression results show influence of the GSTT1 expression profile throughout the season and after an intense exercise with sport performance and as a fitness check tool.<br>O treino desportivo com o objetivo de performance competitiva coloca os atletas sob um forte risco de desequilíbrio oxidativo, conhecido por stress oxidativo.

Riley, Mike. "Developing a model for the application of post-occupancy evaluation (POE) as a facilities performance enhancement tool in the higher education sector." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2013. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/6192/.

Full text
Abstract:
Post-occupancy evaluation provides a mechanism for systematically evaluating facilities performance. However, the effectiveness of existing models within HE is subject to question with few institutions fully embracing its application. The research sought to establish the extent to which POE models are utilised and the degree to which they satisfy the needs of HE in England and Wales. The outcome of the work was to propose a POE model that addresses the needs of Higher Education institutions. The research found that development of POE models has been driven by numerous factors resulting in creation of sophisticated POE frame-works. However the extent to which they are considered effective is limited. Earlier work focuses on the identification of factors that influence user satisfaction and development of complex quantitative models. Users of such models seek to learn lessons from projects to improve the design and delivery of facilities and enhance their performance in use. However, the extent to which existing POE models facilitate this is subject to question. The study adopted a mixed methods approach to establish whether existing models reflected the factors influencing user satisfaction in the specific context of HE. It revealed that physical and internal environmental factors influenced user satisfaction in varying patterns with varying results in differing situations. The perception of quality consistently correlated with users' overall perceptions of satisfaction with buildings. The term 'quality' is a made up of several discrete factors; further work could be developed to allow these to be fully defined. The research concluded that a single POE model would be inappropriate and a frame-work is proposed based on a balanced scorecard, reflecting four performance dimensions tailored to the context of HE and allowing linkage of POE to strategic institutional plans. The project liberated contribution to theoretical knowledge and professional practice. It established that within HE the concept of a consistent set of factors correlating with overall satisfaction is flawed. It went further to identify the construct of 'quality' as a key factor influencing satisfaction and established user satisfaction is a construct that is time related. It also found that application of POE is inconsistent across the HE sector in terms of purpose and extent of connectivity to institutional objectives. These findings indicated that adoption of a standardised POE model within HE is unlikely to liberate consistent, useful data to enhance building and facilities performance. The adoption of the proposed approach offers a vehicle cost effective development of tailored POE solutions.

Abstract:
This study examined experiences of teachers in ex-Model C secondary schools in Port Elizabeth with specific reference to the strategies adopted, challenges and rewards of teaching in diverse classrooms. It is located in the realm of diversity pedagogy and multi-cultural education and contextualized against the socio-political and colourful historical climate of education in South Africa. This study was conducted by using the qualitative research approach against the backdrop of the phenomenological design according to the interpretivist paradigm. Data were elicited through in-depth semi-structured interviews with 16 teachers from 4 ex-Model C English medium secondary schools (formerly White schools) who had experiences of teaching both pre-1994, when schools were mono-ethnic, and post-1994 when the schools were multi-ethnic. The interviews were transcribed and the rich thick data were analysed and categorized into themes and sub-themes by adopting a constant comparative method. The findings of the study indicate that teachers failed to embrace diversity to its fullest, although they did not mind teaching diverse learners. Furthermore, it is evident that they have not made concerted efforts to implement culturally responsive teaching strategies to cater for diversity in their classes as the approaches tend to be cosmetic and superficial. The findings indicate that teachers are stuck in the quagmire of business as usual-, colour-blind-, assimilationist, contributionist approaches that militate against culturally responsive pedagogy. It is recommended that teachers be empowered with skills in diversity education by various stakeholders such as School Governing Bodies, the Department of Basic Education and teacher unions so that they are better equipped to implement strategies in their classes that cater to the needs of a diverse learner population.

Gbologah, Franklin Ekoue. "Development of a multimodal port freight transportation model for estimating container throughput." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/34817.

Full text
Abstract:
Computer based simulation models have often been used to study the multimodal freight transportation system. But these studies have not been able to dynamically couple the various modes into one model; therefore, they are limited in their ability to inform on dynamic system level interactions. This research thesis is motivated by the need to dynamically couple the multimodal freight transportation system to operate at multiple spatial and temporal scales. It is part of a larger research program to develop a systems modeling framework applicable to freight transportation. This larger research program attempts to dynamically couple railroad, seaport, and highway freight transportation models. The focus of this thesis is the development of the coupled railroad and seaport models. A separate volume (Wall 2010) on the development of the highway model has been completed. The model railroad and seaport was developed using Arena® simulation software and it comprises of the Ports of Savannah, GA, Charleston, NC, Jacksonville, FL, their adjacent CSX rail terminal, and connecting CSX railroads in the southeastern U.S. However, only the simulation outputs for the Port of Savannah are discussed in this paper. It should be mentioned that the modeled port layout is only conceptual; therefore, any inferences drawn from the model's outputs do not represent actual port performance. The model was run for 26 continuous simulation days, generating 141 containership calls, 147 highway truck deliveries of containers, 900 trains, and a throughput of 28,738 containers at the Port of Savannah, GA. An analysis of each train's trajectory from origin to destination shows that trains spend between 24 - 67 percent of their travel time idle on the tracks waiting for permission to move. Train parking demand analysis on the adjacent shunting area at the multimodal terminal seems to indicate that there aren't enough containers coming from the port because the demand is due to only trains waiting to load. The simulation also shows that on average it takes containerships calling at the Port of Savannah about 3.2 days to find an available dock to berth and unload containers. The observed mean turnaround time for containerships was 4.5 days. This experiment also shows that container residence time within the port and adjacent multimodal rail terminal varies widely. Residence times within the port range from about 0.2 hours to 9 hours with a mean of 1 hour. The average residence time inside the rail terminal is about 20 minutes but observations varied from as little as 2 minutes to a high of 2.5 hours. In addition, about 85 percent of container residence time in the port is spent idle. This research thesis demonstrates that it is possible to dynamically couple the different sub-models of the multimodal freight transportation system. However, there are challenges that need to be addressed by future research. The principal challenge is the development of a more efficient train movement algorithm that can incorporate the actual Direct Traffic Control (DTC) and / or Automatic Block Signal (ABS) track segmentation. Such an algorithm would likely improve the capacity estimates of the railroad network. In addition, future research should seek to reduce the high computational cost imposed by a discrete process modeling methodology and the adoption of single container resolution level for terminal operations. A methodology combining both discrete and continuous process modeling as proposed in this study could lessen computational costs and lower computer system requirements at a cost of some of the feedback capabilities of the model This tradeoff must be carefully examined.

Vieira, Guilherme Bergmann Borges. "Modelo de governança aplicado a cadeias logístico-portuárias." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/96496.

Full text
Abstract:
Os resultados evidenciam a existência de um modelo de governança mais eficiente e maduro no porto de Valência e revelam oportunidades de melhoria na governança dos dois portos.<br>Ports are key to the competitiveness of exporting and importing sectors that make use of them and for the development of the regions in which they are inserted. And, for the proper port management, is necessary to understand the port in a broader sense, considering the set of actors included in the port logistics chain and the activities developed by these actors. In recent years, studies have been developed focusing ports as business clusters and addressing the coordination mechanisms or governance of the different actors in the port logistics chain. In this context, an emerging issue concerns the analysis port governance models and its relation to port performance. Governance in port logistics chains is a key factor for the competitiveness of ports and represents the mechanisms used to coordinate relations between the actors of the port community and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of logistics flows related, thus improving the port competitive insertion. Given this context, this thesis aims to propose a governance model applied to port logistics chain. For this, initially are studied the different classifications of seaports, being considered the elements that compose them and their relation to governance; port logistics processes are analyzed, identifying possible opportunities for improvement and its relationship to port governance; and is analyzed the evolution of port governance studies in recent years, identifying the existing governance models and their relation to port performance. From these elements, a conceptual model is developed to support the analysis of governance in port logistics chains and based on the proposed model, is made a comparative analysis of governance in the ports of Santos and Valencia. The results show the existence of a more efficient and mature governance model in the port of Valencia and reveal opportunities for improvement in the governance of the two ports.

Abstract:
Through the researcher's experience and informal discussions with other pedagogues working in tertiary music environments, the researcher was of the opinion that there is currently not a comprehensive arranging/orchestration method book that could be used exclusively as a course text in post-secondary arranging courses. While there are numerous published method books available, they are generally produced in North America and do not address all the needs of an arranging/orchestration course. The aim of the research was to find what are the constituent parts and theoretical underpinnings of a model Arranging course text book. Also, to find what materials are currently being used by lecturers and teachers throughout Australasian universities, colleges and other institutions for the delivery of arranging (and/or orchestration) courses, and if these materials differ from those used in North America. Of interest are the assumptions made in the background knowledge of the students entering these courses from upper-secondary level or otherwise and if this project can assist students making the transition. Finally, is there potential to have a standard text published in Australia, what are the important elements that should be included, and is it possible to deliver such a text as an online document? The research showed that most teachers and lecturers in post-secondary school music courses teaching arranging/orchestration use extracts from several books and link them together, filling in the gaps, with their own methodologies and experiences. The problem with this approach is the resultant lack of uniformity through the various sections of the course; in particular the musical examples used and the availability of audio recordings of the examples. Some older published texts, while valuable in their content, do not supply audio recordings. Most texts investigated that do supply audio recordings only demonstrate good arranging/orchestration techniques and fail to compare the same example conceived through poor technique. This study revealed some important findings about the lack of a course method book existing that met the needs of educators delivering post-secondary courses in arranging. The key elements of such a course book were identified through research and then written into a model text (the project) with accompanying CD audio examples. Upon gaining valuable insights and completing the project, there was some scope for improving, extending (or changing delivery method) and publishing the project.

Abstract:
Criminal Justice<br>Ph.D.<br>In January of 2012, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter outlined the crime fighting measures that his administration would pursue during his second term as mayor. Included was a plan to introduce a multi-agency crime reduction program, which Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey and District Attorney Seth Williams would co-chair, called GunStat. GunStat was described as a collaborative effort to reduce gun violence through (1) identifying locations with a high incidence of violent crime, (2) pinpointing violent offenders responsible for these crimes, (3) focusing on arresting and prosecuting these offenders for crimes committed at these places, and (4) enhanced monitoring of offenders on probation and parole who are living and/or offending within these locations. In effect, GunStat was designed to target the right people (prolific, violent known offenders) at the right places (hot spots of violent crime). This dissertation is an in-depth, ex post facto evaluation of Philadelphia’s GunStat model as implemented over two phases and two years. It involved both a quasi-experimental research design which employed propensity score matching methods to generate comparisons, and a process-evaluation where several themes, including program implementation, were explored. The results here suggest that GunStat did not reduce crime relative to comparison locations. However, the qualitative data highlighted the importance of informal inter-agency networks that were developed during the course of the intervention, and suggested that GunStat put future collaborations on a solid footing. The implications for criminal justice policy, theory and evaluation design are discussed.<br>Temple University--Theses

Abstract:
The general goal of this dissertation is to discuss different dimensions of a class of Post-Keynesian models known as Stock-Flow Consistent Models. The main features of these models are: (i) the presence of balance sheets matrices of the sectors to be modeled, guaranteeing the consistency in the economic stocks; (ii) the flow of funds matrix, that records the real and financial transactions of the economy. The first step of the work is to analyze the origins of the SFC models, presenting the works that preceded the first elaborations. Next to it, the current SFC literature is surveyed. These two steps are accomplished by means of a survey of the literature in academic journals, working papers, dissertations and thesis. The third step of the work is a discussion of methodological issues such as the role of expectations in the behavioral functions for consumption. Finally, the fourth step consists of elaborating a SFC model in order to analyze four fiscal policy regimes: (i) balanced budget, (ii) a target for government’s expenditures , (iii) a target for government deficit, and (iv) a target for government debt. The steady state behavior of each regime is analyzed, as well as its resilience to adverse shocks. The second regime is the one with the higher steady state growth rate and also is the more resilient to negative shocks.

Abstract:
The thesis provides a comparison of different portfolio models and tests their performance on the financial markets. Our analysis particularly focuses on comparison of the classical Markowitz modern portfolio theory and the downside risk models of the post-modern portfolio theory. In addition, we consider some alternative portfolio models ending with total eleven models that we test. If the performance of different portfolio models should be evaluated and compared correctly, we must use a measure that is unbiased to any portfolio theory. We suggest solving this issue via a new approach based on the utility theory and utility functions. We introduce the unbiased method for evaluation of the portfolio model performance using the expected utility efficient frontier. We use the asymmetric behavioural utility function to capture the behaviour of the real market investors. The Markowitz model is the leading market practice. We investigate whether there are any circumstances in which some other models might provide better performance than the Markowitz model. Our research is for three reasons unique. First, it provides a comprehensive comparison of broad classes of different portfolio models. Second, we focus on the developed markets in United States and Germany but also on the local emerging markets in Czech Republic and Poland. These local markets have never been tested in such extent before. Third, the empirical testing is based on the broad data set from 2003 to 2012 which enable us to test how different portfolio model perform in different macroeconomic conditions.

Full text
Abstract:
This research paper focuses on developing a model for the integration of the transport operators in the Nelson Mandela Bay area. The motivation for this integration is the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Public Transport Plan, which has set the goal of developing a new public transport system for the Metropolitan area. This system will integrate the different modes of transport into a single, seamless and scheduled service which will adhere to contractually enforced levels of quality, reliability and safety. In order to achieve this vision, the current bus and taxi operators will need to be unified into a viable and operational entity structure which will provide the required services to the public. The main research problem has therefore been identified as follows: How can the bus and taxi operators in Nelson Mandela Bay be integrated into a single entity, or small number of entities, in order to provide a viable, efficient and sustainable public transport service? This research paper sought to address this problem by conducting a case study of the Nelson Mandela Bay project, which took place over the course of a one year period. The author served as the project manager on the team that was responsible for developing the integration model. Additional research included a study visit to the cities of Bogota and Pereira in Colombia, which have implemented similar transport models, as well as a secondary study focusing on generic organisational integration strategies in existing literature. This paper is fundamentally a qualitative study. In this light, the research data was analysed according to the quasi-judicial method, which was deemed most suitable to the case study format adopted. The findings of the analysis were evaluated, and based on the resultant conclusions, a final integration model was recommended. The fact that this study is based on an actual project that has real world implications and consequences makes the result very relevant, and as such it will serve as a valuable addition to the body of knowledge which can be of assistance to other cities or project teams facing similar challenges in South Africa or even internationally.

Abstract:
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo)<br>Abstract: The following study aims to verify the applicability of the mental model to explain the dynamics of the exchange rate in Brazil from 2001 to 2018. The end of Bretton Woods agreement in 1973 led to changes in the international financial architecture, such as the ones observed in the relationship between a country with its exchange rate. As some countries chose the floating Exchange rate regime instead of the fixed one. the exchange rates of the following years presented a highly volatile behavior. This behavior added to financial globalization, growing demand for liquid assets, and deep markets, caused a financialization of the Exchange rate. This process strengthened the relation of the Exchange rate to short-term capital flows. In addition, it permitted speculation profits from the exchange variation. In this same period, lots of theories and models were formulated trying to explain this new outline. Among them, there is the post Keynesian approach of exchange rate determination. According to it, agents’ expectations and short-term capital flows are the driving force of currency movements. Thus, this approach created a mental model which delineates the development of those expectations. The complete mental model has three phases; indicators, base factors, and processes, and it will be used as part of this paper methodology. As this study is a descriptive and explanatory, its methodological procedures were divided in two parts. First, there is a descriptive statistical analys... Abstract:
The dissertation thesis studies the extension of the context of the term model as a means of interpretation for Czech and Slovak post-conceptual works of art. Based on result of a historical excursion into the history of painting, sculpture and architecture, the thesis offers a new typology of a model which is exemplified on particular work of art of Czech and Slovak post-conceptual era in the first two decades of the 21st century. The historical part of the thesis concludes the following: model in the art is an emancipated form originating from different academic as well as layman discourse; emancipated model has a methaphorical layer and thus it reflects wide historical, cultural and social relations. The categories proposed include: a linear model, a physical model, a cognitive model and an immersive model. The linear model encompases the sketch themes and so-called visualization metaphors (graphs, charts, schemes, etc) and originates as a reaction to information saturation and complicated networks. The physical model is a form to architecture and hobby modelling, it is characterised by a simple, „sketchy“ structure reacting to social themes and individual and collective memory. The cognitive model points to the cognitive turn of the society, it evaluates the materialisation of mental space and explains the emancipated model as an open category. Finally, the immersive model interprets the medium of exhibition as a model form which is articulated by and artisitic manifesto or an architectural interference. Another form of immersion that is being discussed in the chapter about immersive models, is a photographic or 3 D computer illusion as a reaction to society‘s virtualisation. Simultaneously to theoretical-historical research, an artistic research was taking place which became the basis for the creation of different categories and typologies of model. Each proposed category thus includes a so-called author‘s note reflecting the practical part of the dissertation thesis.

Abstract:
Approved for public release, distribution unlimited<br>MBA Professional Report<br>Husbanding services are crucial elements of a port visit. In support of mission objectives, combatant commanding officers and sealift masters rely on contractors to act on the U.S. Navy's behalf in coordinating the delivery of supplies or performance of services. Through the years, the cost of port services around the world has increased in various magnitudes. However, the U.S. Navy's ability to track and analyze port-visit costs changes remains rudimentary. Current systems lack the functionality needed by the stakeholders to effectively and efficiently forecast port-visit costs. The researchers developed a Web-based modularized application that stores and displays invoices, generates reports, and more importantly, forecasts future port-visit costs using the standard port-visit cost forecasting model for husbanding contracts. The forecasting function of the application provides two predictive methods, namely confidence interval estimator and exponential smoothing. The analysis clearly shows that low requirement variability improves the reliability of the interval, while high frequency of port-visits increases the accuracy of the exponential smoothing results. The capabilities of the application provide stakeholders with a valuable tool to analyze port-visit requirements and costs trends.

Mustapha, Nazeem. "Aspects of a spherically symmetric model of the post-decoupling universe." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/17524.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 84-88.<br>The central aim of this thesis is to consider aspects of the spherically symmetric Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) solution as a model of the post-decoupling universe. To do this comprehensively is a massive task and is not our aim here. Indeed, far from it, we will concentrate on select instances of this programme and attempt in some places to indicate possibilities for further study. There are many solutions of the EFE which satisfy what we consider to be 'reasonable criteria' for a cosmology and others that do not. The LTB solution may be accepted as a reasonable cosmological model because ■ It allows non-empty solutions. ■ It allows expanding solutions. ■ It has a homogeneous and isotropic limit. ■ It allows for inhomogeneity.

Weber, Bryan Douglas. "A proposed post-conflict planning model for US Army reconstruction teams." Thesis, Kansas State University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/6956.

Full text
Abstract:
Master of Regional and Community Planning<br>Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning<br>Jason Brody<br>As effects of social and environmental conflicts perpetuate globally, fewer nations in the world appear to be at settled peace. The on-set of natural disasters and socio-political conflicts continue to force the United States Government to be increasingly called upon to provide resources that secure unstable regions during times of conflict. One method the government uses to securing its international neighbors is through the deployment of US Army reconstruction teams. These teams assist in transforming a negatively impacted foreign nation into a peaceful and functioning sovereignty within itself and its region; however, in order to begin reconstruction and engage in long term stability for the best interest of the host-nation, the Army must scrutinize current decision-making techniques to assure that basic human rights are instilled and local inhabitants have a means to sustain those efforts. This research sets out to define a planning model which supplements Army doctrine concerning post-conflict reconstruction, mainly FM 3-07 Stability Operations. It looks to incorporate academia, professional experience, and government resources with indigenous leadership in order to define a process to reconstruct infrastructure for a foreign nation during a time of need. More importantly, it looks to enforce those measures which endorse the basic human rights of society to instill security in post-conflict regions.

Adetomokun, Idowu Jacob. "Exploring semiotic remediation in performances of stand-up comedians in post- apartheid South Africa and post-colonial Nigeria." University of the Western Cape, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/6684.

Full text
Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD<br>This research has been conducted by focusing on the trajectories of semiotic ensembles from various contexts that stand-up comedians exploited for aesthetic and communicative purposes. I apply the social semiotic theory of multimodality (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2001, 2006), and the notions of semiotic remediation (Bolter and Grusin, 1996, 2000) and resemiotization (Iedema, 2003) to selected audiovisual recordings performances of Trevor Noah and Loyiso Gola from South Africa; and Atunyota Akporobomeriere (Ali Baba) and Bright Okpocha (Basket Mouth) from Nigeria. I explore the trajectories of semiotic resources that the comedians used across modes, contexts and practices. I also trace the translation and interpretation of socio-cultural and political materials by South African and Nigerian stand-up comedians’ performances. The idea is also to examine the extent to which the socio-cultural and political contexts of both countries have differential effects on the choices in the semiotic resources used in the reconstruction of meanings, including cross socio-cultural taboos. The study reveals that combinations of various semiotic materials ranging from political, sociocultural, religious and personal lifestyles are remediated (repurposed) for comic and aesthetic effects. This involves translating and re-interpreting the semiotic resources across contexts and practices. In this regard, the study showed how the artists rework verbal language, images, socio-political discourses and other semiotic material for new meanings. It also reveals that although the choices of materials are similar, there is a tendency of localizing semiotic resources to particular localities and audiences, so that each artist’s performance comes out as unique to the person. The study concludes that language alone is not at the core of communication as other semiotic modes (in addition to languages) are integrated interweaving resources to make meaning. The direction of the modes or resources is multidimensional. All the spoken texts, all the non-linguistic modes: gestures, stance, movements, running on stage, postures, mimicking and others, perform vital roles to recontextualize meanings in stand-up comedy performance. Therefore, the study opens up new perspectives on social semiotic approaches to multimodality, as well as on language social semiotic and to theory and media studies. The contribution also answers the call to expand the understanding and research on the theory of ‘multimodality’ and the various concepts such as semiotic remediation and resemiotization associated with it.

Leow, Yoon Kah. "Post-Routing Analytical Models for Homogeneous FPGA Architectures." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/311216.

Full text
Abstract:
The rapid growth in Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) architecture design space has led to an explosion in architectural choices that exceed well over 1,000,000 configurations. This makes searching for pareto-optimal solutions using a CAD-based incremental design process near impossible for hardware architects and application engineers. Designers need fast and accurate analytical models in order to evaluate the impact of their design choices on performance. Despite the proliferation of FPGA models, todays state-of the art modeling tools suffer from two drawbacks. First, they rely on circuit characteristics extracted from various stages of the FPGA CAD flow making them CAD dependent. Second, they lack ability to take routing architecture parameters into account. These two factors pose as a barrier for converging to the desired implementation rapidly. In this research, we address these two challenges and propose the first static power and post-routing wirelength models in academia. Our models are unique as they are CAD-independent, and they take both logic and routing architecture parameters into account. Using the static power model we are able to estimate the active and idle leakage power dissipation in homogeneous FPGAs with average correlation factor of 95% and mean percentage error of 17% over experimental results based on MCNC benchmarks. Using our wirelength model, we are able to obtain a low mean percentage error of 4.2% and an average correlation factor of 84% using MCNC and VTR benchmarks. We also show that utilizing wirelength model for architecture optimization process reduces the design space exploration time by 53% compared to the CAD-based process. We finally propose an algorithmic approach to estimate the logic density (i.e., number of LUTs) of multiplexer-based circuits, and address the problem of discrete effects in FPGA analytical models. We show that a model that generates logic density of a fundamental circuit element, such as a multiplexer, can be used to estimate performance metrics, such as critical path delay and power.

Patel, Kaushal S. "Post-TBI Hippocampal Neurogenesis in Different TBI Models." VCU Scholars Compass, 2016. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/4134.

Full text
Abstract:
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) leads to short-term and long-term consequences that can cause many different life-long disorders. Studies of TBI have generally focused on the acute stage; however, it is now becoming important to investigate chronic responses following TBI as clinical reports of dementia and cognitive impairments have been linked to a history of TBI. Recent data have established that cognitive function is associated with hippocampal neurogenesis. Chronic injury induced changes in the brain may affect this endogenous process. Chronic responses following TBI include cell death pathways and inflammatory responses that are persistent in the brain for months to years after injury. In this study we investigate the chronic consequences of TBI on adult neurogenesis and the possible involvement of chronic-inflammation in regulating adult neurogenesis. We used two popular TBI animal models, Control Cortical Impact (CCI) and Lateral Fluid Percussion Injury (LFPI) models, to examine focal and diffuse injury responses respectively. Adult rats received CCI, LFPI, or sham injury and were sacrificed at either 15 days or 3 months after injury to examine either subacute or chronic TBI-induced responses respectively. We found no change in levels of proliferation activity at both time points in both TBI models compared to sham animals. Using Doublecortin immunolabeling we found an enhanced generation of new neurons at 15 days after injury and by 3 months this activity was significantly reduced in both TBI models compared to sham animals. We also found persistent inflammation in the injured brains at both time points. Morphological assessment showed that LFPI model of TBI causes shrinkage of the ipsilateral hippocampus. Our results show that moderate TBI induced hippocampal neurogenesis in both models at the early time post-injury. However, at chronic stage, reduced hippocampal neurogenesis is observed in both models and this is accompanied by chronic inflammation. These results suggest that persistent inflammatory responses maybe detrimental to normal neurogenic activity, leading to cognitive impairment and neurodegeneration in long-term TBI survivors.
