Full textThe Roman de Troie in prose known as Prose 1 is a transcription into prose of Benoît de Sainte-Maure's versified novel. This rewriting work, pervaded by historiographical ambition, also aims to edify through moralisations. Replacing the novel in its tradition (the Trojan theme) and confronting it with its most direct source as well as with other works from the 13th century, such as the Trésor by Brunet Latin or the chronicles of the Crusades, enable us to clarify its dating and locating. Thanks to the prose medium, the anonymous author builds a new approach to History, thus modifying the narrator's ethos and the mimesis of reality : the role of the individual in action is stressed, while action itself is remodeled to highlight the agent's responsibility ; a responsibility not only in acts but also in words, which are reported in a radically different manner. Along with his own view of the legend, the prose writer offers edifying moralistic commentaries that draw the portrait of a measured man, revealing the influence of both Christian wisdom and Aristotelian philosophy, very much alive in the second half of the 13th century. Beyond all that, the rewriting work is pregnant with ideological and political stakes : Prose 1 sets the exaltation of Christian faith and a certain ideal of feudal government in the heart of the Antique world, a vision supported by an inversion of the translatio and a redefinition of Benoît's values, models and identifications. The writing encompasses several genres and becomes totalising, in order to make the legend an ideological answer to the main concerns of those days

Full textThis work is a critical edition of the fifth version of the Roman de Troie by Benoît de Sainte-Maure, which can be found in fifteen manuscripts and was composed at the beginning of the fourteenth century, perhaps in Naples. This prose version has two caracteristics which make it stand apart from the other four, and which form the basis of the introductional study of the text. On the one hand, the prose version is not an autonomous text, but the Trojan section of a compilation of Antique history, the Histoire ancienne jusqu'à César in its second version, whose reception must be studied ; on the other hand, this prose version is as much a work of compilation which uses two of the previous prose version as an adptation in prose, and the ways in which the author has written and rewritten the story has been studied. The edition is followed by a linguistic study, a glossary and an index of proper names

Full textGenesis a and genesis b are two very different works. The former is a traditional poem, which modifies the biblical narrative to adapt it to the norms of old English poetry: each episode is divided into paragraphs by rhetorical structures. The author underlines the opposition between righteous and evil men and demonstrates the need to serve god. - the clumsy verse of genesis b and, in contrast, its subtle puns and envelope patterns, indicate that the author, though a beginner in vernacular verse, may have been trained in Latin writing. The main theme of the work is how to distinguish good and evil, and the author may have been opposing heresy (perhaps Gottschalk’s), choosing vernacular poetry as a means to secure a wider audience. The other fragments of the old-Saxon genesis, written by several authors, would then have been composed later to complete the biblical paraphrase. - the study of the illustrations indicates that the exemplar of the Junius XI MS already contained the two genesis poems, and two intermediates can be posited between the source of the drawings and MS Junius XI. This number of MSs indicates how famous the poem was, as does the fact that echoes of some lines can be found in Judith

Full textThe scarcity of studies regarding the impacts of agricultural mosaics on biodiversity hinders the creation of conservation strategies and a need for information concerning the ecology and behavior of wildlife species. In this context, the present study aimed to: 1) determine the composition and structure of mammal assemblages of medium and large sized in an agricultural landscape at Atlantic Forest; 2) evaluate the puma (Puma concolor) feeding pattern through analysis of stable isotopes (SIA) in two agricultural mosaics; 3) analyze mammal assemblages by functional diversity (FD) in forest remnants distributed in major biogeographic regions of the Atlantic Forest, and identify ecological thresholds for conservation. For mammal\'s inventory, eight forest remnants were selected in Campinas Metropolitan Region (RMC), São Paulo state. Data were collected through active search (visualizations and tracks), resulting in the record of 34 mammal species, 27 medium and large size, four of small size, and three exotic. Seven species are threatened with extinction, with novel records of Myrmecophaga tridactyla and Lycalopex gymnocercus for this region. The species richness and composition pointed RMC as an important area for mammal\'s conservation. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes were analyzed in pumas hair, obtained from fecal samples collected by active search in forest remnants embedded in agricultural landscapes in São Paulo state. There was a higher consumption of C3 prey (~ 47% of individuals) in the area with the highest proportion of forest coverage, and greater consumption of C4 prey (~ 40% of individuals) where the agricultural matrix was predominant. Was observed the consumption of prey with diet based on food items from both forest remnants and agricultural matrix, suggesting high behavioral plasticity of puma\'s and their prey\'s occupying areas heavily impacted by man. Stable isotopes contributed with pioneer information on trophic ecology, aiming the development of new conservation strategies in anthropogenic areas. A database consisting of 49 mammal\'s assemblages, created from primary and secondary data of inventories, was used for FD analysis and threshold\'s identification. 38 specie\'s traits were selected for FD calculation. The thresholds existence was verified using the \"segmented\" function, available on R program. FD was different between mammal assemblages with the same species richness, indicating that environmental filters may affect its values. The gradual increment in FD, due to the increase in forest remnants area, presented a positive relationship, possibly linked to the increased complexity and heterogeneity of large areas. Two thresholds (52 and 1244 ha) were identified, creating three functionally distinct situations, both critical as more stable, allowing to define and propose for each one specific ways of action. Mammal\'s assemblages found between the thresholds showed significant functional increment considering the relationship between FD and forest remnants area, and actions aiming biological restoration and improvements in the landscape configuration should be encouraged. It was concluded, therefore, that both SIA as the FD can be considered important tools to outline strategies and actions for mammal\'s conservation.

Full textFactors like the lack of technology, the hiring of a not very well quantified labor, a poor productive structure, an increasing necessity of adjustment to constant changes in the market and to new rules established by global economy, encourage the need for the use of techniques that supply information to be used as the base for the management of small and medium enterprises. These information are fundamental in the process of making decision. This way the performance indicators come up as an opportunity of improvement that drives the organization to words a technological development to the self management in operational levels (the basic ground in production), tactical (supervisors) and strategical (directors, managers). This study aimed to develop performance indicators for sowed wood improvement in a small enterprise. Therefore, the development of performance indicators was firstly realized planning of with the fluxograms planning of the process that are executed by the enterprise (macro processes) and of the productive process, which is of this study the main points of this study. From the fluxograms, critical points of the productive process were identified by using the not structured brainstorming technique the FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) technique, was applied in each critical point in order to valuate their impact in the productive process. A case study was planned for each point by using the Ishikawa Diagram. The performance indicators were developed based on the case study and it works on the critical points of productive process. These indicators help the enterprise during the process of taking decisions based on facts and data in the routine management, show the changes in the process, point out the needs on which the crew must be trained, allow the reduction of number of failures and develop opportunities.

Full textDue to the high demand of milk base ice cream in the market and occasional milk intoxication, this work aimed to evaluate the microbiological quality of vanilla and chocolate ice cream production, as well as its raw material, the milk. Comparisons of the media of Escherichia coli broth - EC (Difco 0314-01-0) and brilliant green bile lactose broth 2% - BGB (Difco 0007-01-2) were used in the confirmation test for fecal coliform counts. The sample microbiological analyses carried out were the counts of total and fecal coliforms, the examination for positive-coagulase Staphylococcus and Salmonella spp, all of them determined by the present brazilian legislation. Basing on the obtained results, the milk exceeded values in 58.3% and the ice cream in 19.4% of the samples analyzed for fecal coliforms using BGB and 70.8% and 30.6%, respectively using EC. Staphylococcus was detected in just one milk sample (4.2%) and two ice cream samples (5.6%) and for Salmonella, all of the samples presented absence of that microorganism. There was a significant difference (p<0.05) between the EC and BGB media comparisons.

Full textThe destruction of tropical forests is alarming and may lead to the extinction of species susceptible to fragmentation. In the Atlantic Forest, mammals with important functions in the ecosystem balance, such as Panthera onca (jaguar), are already absent in part of the biome. Therefore, it is urgent to understand the processes that influence the permanence of these species in an area, in order to prevent future local extinctions. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the influence of environmental characteristics on the richness and occurrence of terrestrial mammals of medium and large size; as well as the spatio-temporal relationship between the top predator, mesopredator and preys, in the Atlantic foreste area continuos continuous with Serra do Mar State Park, with recent degradation history (Neblinas Park, Bertioga, State of São Paulo). Sample data was collected by camera trapping for 90 days in 2013 and 2014, 27 sampling points 1km distant from each other. The environmental characteristics were altitude, drainage density, average rainfall, average temperature, number of palm hearts (Euterpe edulis) and the presence of nature trails. Generalized Linear Models were used to analyze the environmental influences on the richness and occurrence of species (with more than 3 records per year). For the other analyses, species were grouped into predator, mesopredators, preys of large, medium and small size. The period and overlap activity of these groups were estimated by the Kernel density. Abundance was estimated for mesopredators and prey through N-mixture models. Single-season occupancy models were used to analyze the probability of occupancy and detection of top predators. A total of 18 terrestrial mammals of medium and large size were sampled, with nine of them being threatened with extinction: Cabassous unicinctus (naked-tailed armadillo), Cuniculus paca (paca), Leopardus guttulus (oncilla), Leopardus pardalis (ocelot), Leopardus wiedii (margay), Pecari tajacu (collared peccary), Puma concolor (cougar), Puma yagouaroundi (jaguarundi) and Tapirus terrestris (tapir). In the 2013, the species richness was positively influenced by the largest volume of precipitation and the species occurrence (C. unicinctus, Dasypus novemcinctus (tatu-galinha), P. concolor, Sylvilagus brasiliensis (tapiti) e T. terrestris) was interfered by the drainage density. In 2014, richness was not explained by any of the environmental characteristics mentioned and only four species have suffered influence of them. The top predator recorded was catemeral, the mesopredator and large prey were mainly nocturnal and prey of medium and small size were mainly daylight. Smaller prey had the highest total overlap with the predator (Δ1=0.72). The influence on the probability of occupancy of the area by the predator varied between the years: in 2013 it was the abundance of large and small preys, and in 2014, the influence was the abundance of medium preys. The detection was negatively influenced by the occasion only in 2014. Our findings showed the environmental characteristics that should be maintained in the area, such as water resources and abundance of prey, for conservation of Atlantic Forest and its fauna community.

Full textFauna studies in homogeneous forests for commercial plantation purposes are still incipient in the country. These reforestation areas present a few resources necessary to the maintenance of wild life, when compared to the native forests. However, understories present in these homogeneous forests can provide food, shelter, protection and the establishment of a favorable environment to animal movement thus, optimizing the use of these reforestation areas by the wild fauna. This study took place in the Horto Florestal de Itatinga, an area of mostly eucalypts forests (Eucalyptus ssp) and remaining fragments of native vegetation (semideciduous seasonal forests, savannah and riparian forests), located in Itatinga, state of São Paulo, Brazil. In order to verify if the presence and density of the understories in the eucalypt forests influence in the use of these locations by medium and large-sized mammals, three types of eucalypt environment were compared: a stand of eucalypt without understory, a stand of eucalypt with intermediate understory an a stand of eucalypt with dense understory. Each of these environments received 24 sand plots (tracking traps) containing alimentary baits (banana, bacon and salt), for the observation of the number of animal tracks in each one of them. Registry numbers, frequency of occurrence and the relative abundance of mammals species in each environment, throughout 15 winter days in 2004 (dry season) and 15 summer days in 2005 (wet season), were verified. In the eucalypt environment with dense understory record numbers were higher, and in the eucalypt environment with intermediate understory the richness of species was bigger. The chi-square test (χ2) showed significant difference in registry numbers among these three environments, as well as between winter and summer periods. Dietary categories of the mammals observed in these sites were verified, and most of the observed animals belonged to generalist species, and they were not so demanding concerning their habitat. Ten species of medium and large-sized mammals were found in these eucalypts environments all told. The collectors curve was not stabilized, indicating that there were still other species to be surveyed in these three environments with eucalypts. A qualitative survey of medium and large-sized mammals in the study area in general, was also carried out. For this purpose, direct and indirect records of the mammals, as well as the visualization of these animals, their tracks, feces, hairs, burrows and carcasses were observed. Local people were interviewed and one camera trapping installed. This survey took place throughout 75 days (between July, 2004 e April, 2005). Twenty-seven species of mammals were found in this survey, but the collectors curve was not stabilized too. Most of the animals observed in this study belonged to generalist species; but at least four species of carnivores (animals are more demanding concerning their habitat) were recorded. This study also accused the presence of eight endangered species in the Horto de Itatinga.

Full textIn the Middle Ages, the interest in the Trojan myth focuses particularly on its main character, Hector.Using the Homeric tradition inherited from the late Latin literature ( Ilias latina, Ephemeridos belli troiani by Dictys of Crete, De Excidio Troiae historia by Dares the Phrygian) as a basis to his work, Benoît de Sainte Maure makes Priam’s son the uncontested hero of his novel, The Roman de Troie, in which he praises the feats of this exceptional warrior. This text greatly contributes to the construction of Hector’s myth during the Middle Ages, as shown by its rewritings in prose or verse, although the story of Troy was also transmitted via Dares’ Latin text or its translation. In addition to these two traditions, another one appeared in the 13th century with the Italian Guido delle Colonne whose Historia Destructionis Troiae is a Latin rewriting of Benoît’s novel. However, Hector’s fame also asserts itself in other works in which the character tends to dissociate himself from his city’s destiny and appears alone or associated to other heroes, Trojan or not, to serve as a reference in terms of bravery, which earned him his place among the Nine Worthies. That is why this character continues to evolve independently from Benoit’s novel and its rewritings, as can be seen through epic poetry and Arthurian tales. Both Christine de Pizan and the author of Ovide moralisé take an interest in the values he embodies.Hector is a model, almost an archetypal figure as well as a character whose story never ceased being rewritten by Medieval tradition

Full textThis work focuses on a short period in French-language literary and cultural history—at the turn of 12th and 13th centuries, around the work of Jean Renart and Raoul de Houdenc—from the standpoint of literary enjoyment. The poetic output of these two early 13th-century authors, who display a keen authorial consciousness underpinned by a meta-discursive reflection that gives more than its due to the principle of delectare, testifies to the diversity of judgements that the Middle Ages pass on this controversial notion. The literary expression of enjoyment is indeed located at the crossing of several discursive fields that specify its meaning and shed contrasting lights on its stakes. Poetry both echoes the dominant views of the Church and epitomizes the complexity of attitudes of theologians and moralists towards literary enjoyment, between outright condemnation and conditional legitimiza-tion. It also bears witness to—and accompanies—the flowering of another ideology, aristocratic and secular, far more favourably disposed towards enjoyment, since the courtly imaginative world grants literary deduit a value that is at the same time ethical, social, and political. Lastly, it reflects the medieval conception of literary Beauty, as formalized by the ars poetica of Medieval Latin, which sets the canons and takes enjoyment as a sign. As a battlefield for these often discordant views, the literary works from the era of Jean Renart and Raoul de Houdenc testify to the appearance of a new claim to pleasure, considered both as an ethical standard and an entitlement. A certain conception of literature in the vernacular was thus born around year 1200

Full text"Context Types of site Figurines have been found in four broad categories of sites: village sites in the open (30 figurines, 18 sites); occupied caves (11 figurines, 3 sites); caves and rock-shelters used for burial and other cult purposes (8 figurines, 5 sites); other funerary sites (11 figurines, 4 sites). There seems to be a clear chronological distinction in the types of context. In the earlier period the vast majority of figurines come from settlement contexts — either open villages or occupied caves — while a few come from cult caves. By contrast, all but one of the 12 figurines of the later period (Late Neolithic and Copper Age) come from burials, mostly individual, either from the tombs themselves or from votive pits closely associated with graves. As we shall see, there are also typological distinctions between the types of figurines found in different contexts. Some of these may represent chronological rather than (or as well as) contextual differences, but a possible difference may also be detected between the figurines from settlement sites and those from cult caves within the earlier Neolithic time range. There are also regional differences in the proportions of different types of context occurring. In northern Italy, 13 sites have produced figurines; of these 8 are village sites, 2 are occupied caves, 1 is a tomb and the other 2 are either certainly or possibly cult cave/ rockshelter sites. In central Italy only 4 sites, all settlements, have produced figurines, while in southern Italy, 9 sites have produced figurines; of these 6 sites are settlements, 1 is a tomb and 2 are cult caves. The situation in Sicily stands out as markedly different in many ways: here 5 sites have produced figurines, of which only 2, both Neolithic, are occupation sites (one cave, one village), 2 are cemetery sites of Copper Age date, and 1 is a cult cave, used in both the Neolithic and the Copper Age (but yielding 2 figurines one definitely, the other presumptively, from Neolithic levels). Specific contexts Unfortunately we have specific evidence of location for very few of the figurines. For those coming from settlement sites, none seem to have been associated with buildings of any kind, domestic or other. Some are unstratified surface finds, while others were found in residual layers, redeposited from earlier levels. The only clear contexts in which figurines have been found is in pits (Rivoli, Vhò), a hollow (Alba) and a compound ditch (Passo di Corvo) and in all cases these may represent secondary depositions, as rubbish. In the occupied caves the figurines, when stratified at all, are found either in original occupation layers or in later layers with other redeposited material. The situation is a little better with the cult caves/rock-shelters. While two figurines, one from Grotta di Ponte di Vara (no. 17) and one from Grotta di San Calogero (no. 51), are unstratified, those from Riparo Gaban (nos 8-10) and Grotta di San Calogero (no. 50) come from stratified Neolithic deposits. Moreover, we have two examples from primary and significant depositions: these are the two distinctive clay heads from the central Apulian cult caves of Grotta di Cala Scizzo (no. 39) and Grotta Pacelli (no. 40). The first was found placed in the corner of an artificial stone enclosure at the back of a small cave used for cult purposes, in a layer with late Serra d'Alto and Diana wares and a C date of c.4340 - 3710 cal.BC (lc). The second was placed face downwards on a hearth inside a limestone slab-built monument; the pottery from this level was of Serra d'Alto type, typologically slightly earlier than that from Grotta di Cala Scizzo. On the basis of their contexts, it seems reasonable to interpret these two figurines as performing some function in the rituals carried out in these caves. This is discussed further below. For some of the 11 figurines from cemeteries or individual tombs we have more detailed evidence of context. Of the two stone figurines attributed to the Late-Final Neolithic, the one from Arnesano (no. 46) in southeast Italy apparently came from a rock-cut tomb of." In Gender & Italian Archaeology, 109–10.
