Perse débute son oeuvre en rejetant systématiquement toutes les sources inspiratrices traditionnelles, dont la fontaine d’Hyppocrène, ce qui lui donne l’occasion de traiter Pégase de « canasson ». Alors que les interprétations d’ensemble réalisées par le passé sont faussées par une appréciation minimisant la construction systématique des Satires, l’objectif de cette étude est de démontrer que leur thème unificateur est la critique de la production / transmission et de la consommation de la littérature à l’époque néronienne. Dans le premier chapitre, en démontrant l’omniprésence des processus d’imitation et d’émulation dans le texte, puis en mettant au jour leur complexité et leur richesse sémantique, nous exposons la métatextualité des Satires, confirmant notre hypothèse de départ. L’analyse des Satires dans le cadre théorique du grotesque bakhtinien conduit dans un deuxième temps à révéler que le vice et la vertu y sont appariés respectivement à la mauvaise et à la bonne littérature et que Perse vise à détruire la première grâce à la philosophie. Par l’analyse de ce message subversif sous-jacent, nous expliquons quels sont les effets négatifs de la mauvaise littérature et les façons dont il faut s’y prendre pour la contrer. Dans le troisième chapitre enfin, grâce aux énoncés programmatiques et à diverses analyses stylistiques, nous donnons à connaître la cible de Perse : les poètes urbains philhellènes, cancres littéraires avides et présomptueux. Le style de Perse, en revanche, se distingue par son audace, son aspect mordax, sa modestie et sa romanité issue du mos maiorum. Grâce à notre étude, la cohérence des Satires, trop souvent tenues pour composites, apparaît nettement.

Full textIn 19th century Latin America, the practice of translation must be understood in a post-colonial context of the construction of national literatures. Sociology of translation and polysystem theory have highlighted how translation contributes to enriching the literary repertoire of a recipient culture by allowing the accumulation of symbolic capital. Our research focuses on the practices and trajectories of fourteen Latin American poet-translators who have been relatively under-studied or are in the process of recent critical re-evaluation: Ignacio Mariscal, Rafael Pombo, Miguel Antonio Caro, Antonio Sellén, Antonio José Restrepo, Raimundo Correia, Rosendo Villalobos, Leopoldo Díaz, Ismael Enrique Arciniegas, Balbino Dávalos, Enrique González Martínez, Guillermo Valencia, Eduardo Díez de Medina and Álvaro Reis. These poet-translators collectively belong to the movements of Latin American Romanticism, Spanish-speaking American Modernism, and Brazilian Parnassianism. Each of them produced poetry translations: classical poets (such as Horace) but also increasingly European and American Modern poets (Hugo, Heredia, Longfellow...); authors considered canonical (Baudelaire, Goethe, Poe), and others largely forgotten (Prudhomme, Richepin, Rollinat...). The poetic dialogue established with prestigious international figures allowed these poet-translators to legitimize their national languages following the Latin American independence era, and also enabled them to experiment with new meters, themes and tonalities. Our authors published their translations in journals, which was a common practice; but especially in poetry collections, which was less common. Our corpus therefore highlights two types of volumes which have not been formally defined and classified: a hybrid form, composed of original and translated poems; and a form composed solely of translations. These two forms have commonalities with poetry volumes in the original language, writer's anthologies, or foreign literature anthologies, but do not correspond entirely to any of them. The uniqueness of our poetry volumes consists in the unity and identity of the subject who selects, translates and reorders foreign texts within his book. We therefore consider the Latin American poet-translator from the figure of the collector, who decontextualizes foreign texts and recontextualizes them in a new series — the book — allowing him to project and build his poetic authority. As our authors were all involved in the political sphere (as deputies, judges, even presidents), we will demonstrate that the collections of translators can contribute to the construction of political projects, and that there is both a liberal use of foreign poetry as well as a conservative use

Full textThe Liber Prefigurationum Christi et Ecclesie is an anonymous poem, written in Latin, which can be dated from the end of the eleventh century. The unabridged version is to be found in only one Parisian manuscript. The verse composition is a bible rewriting containing 2670 hexameters. The author has versified many episodes of the Old Testament and has added exegetical and moral commentaries. The thesis contains, in its first part, an introduction to the Latin text and its translation, which studies the poem structure, the rewriting modes, the exploitation of the exegetical commentaries and of the poets who have written prior to the Liber composition. It also compares the Liber with other biblical rewritings either from late Antiquity or from the Middle Ages. Finally it draws the portrait of the anonymous poet by emphasizing his culture, his versification, his way of thinking and his aims. The second part of the work comprises a new critical edition of the text as well as its first translation. It also includes an apparatus of the glosses and of the biblical references. The third part is a commentary “episode by episode” of the whole poem which mentions the place of each passage in the work (particularly in case of anteposition or postposition), the rewriting of the biblical hypotext, the presence and function of the commentaries, the doctores used by the author, as well as the explanation of our edition choices, when they are different from the text written by G. Dinkova in 2007

Full textAlthough he inspired famous contemporaries like François Rabelais or Clément Marot, and spent time with leading humanists, although he wrote a new Latin tragedy form many times reprinted and a chronicle about the reign of Louis XII familiar to historians, very little is known about the Neo-Latin poet Nicolas Barthélemy de Loches. Collecting, correcting and completing existing data about the man and his writings is necessary, as well as the reconstruction of the social, literary and historical environment in which he lived and wrote, in order to reevaluate the poetic diversity and richness of his work. Such data are enough to show that Barthélemy’s works were not written by a cloistered monk, but rather by a true humanist involved in the pedagogical, monastic and evangelical reforms of his time. The edition of one of the most representative poetic collections written by Barthélemy (a varied collection printed in 1520 in Paris) supports and confirms this interpretation

To the latter he brought, apart from Hellenic culture, a thorough grounding in poetic theory and techniques, that enabled him to embed himself in the Latin tradition. At ease in high society, which he celebrated by minor works (silvae), he set out to establish himself, along with homer, Virgil, Lucan, on the summit of poetry, by making of his thebaid a fluvial aeneid, full of echoes from the great preceding poets, from homer to his contemporaries. Using for framework euripi dean tragedies, he rivaled his predecessors in an unusual fashion, without being afraid to point out, sometimes explicitly, to whom he pretends to leave up to - or even to surpass. Setting out epos on a new path, he incorporated gallimachus, the lyric poets, ovid. His conceptions are those of Seneca, his inspiration is defined as sublime. The world appears in chaos where human passions contest, mysterious- ly conducted by successive interventions of the gods, in the four triads of the thebaid. Jupiter, supreme, manages the crisis from the beginning to the end, a crisis which exactly corresponds to the unfolding of the epos. Like homer, according to Aristotle, he wanted to join to his great opus an "ethical" epos, i. E. Achilleid that he left incomplete

Full textFrom the 3th and 4th century of our age, the quantitative rhythm of the Latin language changed into an accentual rhythm, and the perception for the syllabic quantity of Latin words disappeared. Since knowledge of prosody is crucial for reading and writing in Latin, Medieval school teachers invented the prosodic florilegia, i.e. lists of classical and Medieval Latin verses from the most studied authors (Vergil, Ovid, Persius, Juvenal, Statius, Prudentius, etc.). Today we possess 6 different florilegia from the 9th century, which are both teaching and learning tools. My thesis consists of a critical edition of the corpus of the florilegia which endeavours to be a solid base for further study of these texts, of their compilers, and of the context in which they were used. The present critical edition will also be the starting point for investigating the circulation of Latin poets in the Middle Ages, and for highlighting networks of textual transmission and cultural practices connected to Latin poetry

Full textThis thesis deals with the "canon" (in the sense of "list of authors considered the best within a given genre") of Greek and Latin poets in chapter 10.1 of the Institutio oratoria. In this treatise on rhetoric from the Flavian period, the canon-list derives from a literary and doctrinal tradition that selects certain authors for inclusion and evaluates them in relation to each other as reading material and models of eloquence. The present work describes the list of authors in chapter 10.1 both as the culmination of a diachronous process of establishing "canons", and, in synchrony, as an emanation of the cultural context specific to Flavian Rome. It questions the dynamic of how the list was established by explaining the motivations behind different operations of "listing" (selection - or exclusion - of authors, establishment of hierarchical relations between them, and critical evaluation of their qualities). It shows that the main critical influences on the different entries in the list are those of Cicero, Horace and Denys of Halicarnassus. In particular, its show that the dynamics of how the list was established is specific to each poetic genre. Accordingly, the present work is located at the confluence of the history of rhetoric and its doctrines, the history of philology, literary history, and the history of ancient literary criticism
