Full textThe poetics of early modern denouement in Italian, Spanish and French tragedies implies an ethical issue. The ending of the plot is the expected climax which reveals the meaning and the moral of the story. The aim of the tragic denouement is twofold: it concludes the play and it reverses the hero's fate. In order to conclude the tragedy, the denouement restores a moral balance; in order to reverse the plot, it gives rise to a pathetic excess. Two divergent theoretical models underlie this dual requirement: the logic of exemplarity and the poetics of pathos. I propose to examine the strategies displayed by theorists and dramatists in order to bring together these two theoretical models. I therefore consider the three main features of the denouement (its direction, mode and structure) and the ethical issues to which they give rise (the sequence of causality, the tragic flaw and its atonement). The conciliation between exemplarity and pathos proves an impossibility: Italian, Spanish and French tragedy, despite their differences, denounce the logic of exemplarity as inadequate and unfit to justify, through the expression of a theoretical rule, the experience of misfortune, injustice and chaos. The tragic denouement leads the spectator to a hermeneutic deciphering that may uncover the reasons for the hero's inexplicable misfortunes

It is analyzed at this dissertation, by comparative study of the play Clouds and of some Platoâs dialogues, what is funny and serious among Strepsiades and Socrates, both characters of the Aristophanesâ comedy. Based on the research and the subsequent study of the texts fragments from physicists or philosophers of nature, nowadays called the Presocratics, an attempt is done to explain some scientific theories used in the play. Different situations of confrontation among the two characters selected for this study are discussed with the support of theoretical texts. Another relevant aspect in this study is the search of correlations among comic Poetry and Philosophy, to do this some of the Platonic dialogues are used as source. Even though these texts occurred after the play, they help to compose the picture that the philosopher had of Aristophanes, for example, when he has chosen him as the only representative of Comedy in Symposium. As Socrates aristofÃnico is also an object of study, is necessary comparing him to the Platonic Socrates, not with the intent to point out who is the \\\\\\\"true\\\\\\\", but in helping to understand the first

This dissertation investigates the notion of justice embedded in the Arab-Islamic philosophy from the standpoint of the representational imagery provided in the One Thousand and One Nights (often known in English as the Arabian Nights). In so doing, this paper provides a comparative analysis of the ontological gnoseology of law and justice in the philosophical thinking of Western civilization and the Arab-Islamic culture to establish the dynamic character and autopoietic quality of the objects. The bibliographical research and the comparative method are of great importance on the research methodologies presented in this dissertation. The importance is justified by the fact that the Western civilization has a poor understanding of the islamic law and the concept of justice in Islam, and therefore this dissertation intends to contribute to a better understanding of such concepts. However, the study has an innovative trend, having as the core a prominent literary of Arab-Muslim culture which is the fantastic book One Thousand and One Nights. The value of justice is relative, since the presented hypothesis is answered by the autopoietic character of the Law and by consequence, of the justice. As a result, we can gather a better understanding of the context of the Arab-Muslim world, for greater tolerance among the people and exercising the gift of charity, the supreme manifestation of love, being able to contemplate a more peaceful and harmonious coexistence of human beings on earth

Full textThis dissertation picks up on two recent approaches in Platonic scholarship (P. Stemmer, N. Bloessner), which view Plato’s ''Politeia'' not as a doctrinal work, but rather a coherent argumentation, which, moreover, applies the rules of communication as laid out in the ''Phaedrus'' and is thus related to the argumentative goals of concrete persons in a specific situation. The author primarily focuses on the second aspect, particularly on Socrates’ young interlocutors, the brothers Glaucon and Adeimantus. He shows how their analysis, according to which the public opinion of their time implies a strong tendency towards egoism, and their consequent desire for a well-founded counterargument, for which they turn to Socrates, in fact determines the structure and development of the latter’s argumentation. Since a justification which can withstand all objections requires the demonstration that being just is an intrinsically necessary component of eudaimonia, i.e. of true happiness, a rational life choice thus emerges as the central theme of the ''Politeia'', which gives the dialogue its inner coherence and ultimately explains its structure as well as the connection between the various topics it deals with. This theme is not, however, developed abstractly, but in connection with the concrete situation of the brothers, with Glaucon (according to the author of the dissertation) taking the initiative. However, Plato nonetheless succeeds at not letting the discussion revolve around the particular decisions of an individual regarding a particular way of life, but rather around the fundamental question – which thus also relates to the reader of the text – as to the epistemological and methodological basis for such decisions and the degree of certainty with which they can be reached. According to this interpretation, the methodological and epistemological explications, which figure prominently throughout the dialogue, should be viewed as essential elements of the argumentation.

Full textThe Judicial system has existed in society since ancient civilization. It resides in our subconscious and plays a part in our decision making process taking the form of a moral conscience. Furthermore, the judicial system is realized spatially through the visualization of the Court. These institutions are located across all our major cities and suburbs often occupying prime territory. The judicial court is a public building which should promote civic pride and identity, however, it is a building type which has become highly restricted and walled off from society. It was once a space of public and community participation. It is an integral institution in a democratic society. It has now become associated with crime and violation of law. It is a space perceived by many to be avoided. Through this research and design report I wish to challenge the current court typology and explore the potential of the judicial court and the significant impact it can have on society as a great public building which promotes civic pride. Themes of identity, jurisprudence, conscience and boundaries are explored to develop a new court type and a precedent for future judicial buildings. The design proposes a Magistrates Court of a multi-disciplinary nature for the city of Kliptown and the greater Soweto. It is a hybrid of program interlaced together in response to the context and the broader network age we find ourselves in.
