Abstract This chapter considers the making of Ben Jonson’s poetry, and the meanings that it creates for communities of readers. Beginning with Jonson’s statement to the Scottish poet, William Drummond of Hawthorden, ‘That he wrote all his first in prose’, this chapter considers the influence of Jonson’s education on his writing and sees in the ideal blend of instruction and pleasure that he found at Westminster School with William Camden a model for the societies imagined and created in his poetry. Reading examples from the three major collections of Jonson’s poetry—his Epigrams (1612), The Forest (1616), and The Underwood (posthumous, 1640)—the chapter ends with a consideration of Jonson’s influence on later generations of poets, and on their conception of poetry and poetic history.

Abstract:

Old Kajkavian literature or, Kajkavian literature before the Croatian National Revival, remains relatively unstudied and poorly integrated into the corpus of Croatian national literature. Its peripheral status is mostly due to the political and national-identity-forming processes occurring since the 1830s where the key role was given to Štokavian literature. When Kajkavian literature was studied, the focus was placed predominantly on the printed books. Unlike pre-Revival Kajkavian prose, where the author was in most cases known and the prose was printed, Kajkavian lyric poetry was chiefly preserved as anonymous and in manuscript form. None of the numerous preserved Kajkavian collections of poems have been published in a critical edition, not even recently. The topic of this paper is Pjesmarica Nikole Šafrana (Nikola Šafran’s Collection of Poems), the largest manuscript collection which, along with several Latin poems, contains more than 180 Kajkavian secular poems. Its large size, a significant number of poems which also appear in other Kajkavian collections, as well as its generic and thematic diversity make this collection representative, and a good subject for a detailed research of both the collection’s generic content and the poetic traits of Kajkavian secular lyric poetry.

The paper analyzes Sasamegoto (Whispered Conversations, 1463–1464), a treatise by Shinkei, the influential Buddhist poet and thinker of the Muromachi period (1392–1568). In this treatise on the collaborative poetry of “linked verse” (renga), the author addresses the category of the “Way” (michi) or the “Way of Poetry” (uta-no michi), which he interprets on the basis of ancient Chinese philosophers (Confucius and Lao Tze) and early Japanese authors of Zen school (e. g., Mujū Ichien, who wrote the Shasekishū — The Collection of Sand and Rocks, 13th century) and even endows it with a new meaning.

Abstract:

Pavel Srut (1940-2018) was a representative of a young generation of poets in the golden 1960s. After the invasion of the Warsaw Pact troops (1968), he stayed in Czechoslovakia but could only publish in samizdat and exile. During the period of strict neo-Stalinist censorship (1969-1989), Srut continued to write, more for himself and for a vaguely anticipated future readership. He followed the tradition of the Central European absurdity, which we know from the work of Franz Kafka. One of the highlights of Srut�s poetic work is considered to be his last published collection, Paper Shoes (2001).

The contemporary Czech poet using the pseudonym Ewald Murrer (born in 1964 in Prague) used to be a representative of Czech underground literature before 1989.
