Abstract:
This creative thesis comprises a book length collection of poems entitled Box Of Chalks, and an accompanying prose commentary exploring issues of research, drafting and the forming of a narrative sequence of poetry. The book of poems is based on the experience of Polish boys and men forcibly conscripted into the German Army by National Decree, 4th March 1941. This enforced conscription remains a little acknowledged fact which I discovered is still refuted in some Polish communities. The poems are written from the viewpoint of one conscript. They consist of dramatic monologues, a duologue and a

Abstract:
“Voiceprints of an Astronaut” is a multi-faceted collection of poems that explores the fluid borders between memory and the imagined, the personal and the sociohistorical. The “voiceprints” of the title poem are the words, both imagined and real, of the only twelve men who ever walked on the moon. My own device, of an imagined ‘interview’ with figures from history, is deployed in the title poem. It is also used, for example, in the form of voiceprints from R.L. Critics now generally agree that The Temple is a unity, that it has a definite and deliberate structure and that George Herbert is a poet of order who ordered the collection in a very specific way. There is some agreement on the patterning of the initial poems and the last few, but agreement has not been reached concerning the precise nature and extent of the sequences. When the layout of poems in the Williams manuscript is taken into consideration, it can be seen that Herbert intended the layout of the poems on the page to reinforce associations between poems, particularly with the use of fac

Current approaches to generating rhyming English poetry with a neural network involve constraining output to enforce the condition of rhyme. We investigate whether this approach is necessary, or if recurrent neural networks can learn rhyme patterns on their own. We compile a new dataset of amateur poetry which allows rhyme to be learned without external constraints because of the dataset’s size and high frequency of rhymes. We then evaluate models trained on the new dataset using a novel framework that automatically measures the system’s knowledge of poetic form and generalizability. We

It seems likely that the Shinkan-bon would have been organized in a sequence that links poems together in such a way as to create a larger poetical work for the collection as a whole.
