Abstract:
This paper describes poetry as an alternative to implement Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL). CTL places learning and learning activities in a real-life context, incorporating not only what is learned but also why students should learn it. Meanwhile, poetry is chosen for its authenticity, in which, all nations have their own record on poetry. The classroom activities which involve poetry are poetry production (writing), poetry performance (reading), and poetry appreciation (speaking). By using poetry, learning processes are expected to meet the seven main components of effective learning:

Poetry is teaching material that often is forgotten by teachers of English even though it is listed as core content in the subject syllabus in GY11. Although the word “poetry” only is stated once in the syllabus, it can be interpreted to be indicated wherever “literature in various genres” is mentioned. Poetry is often viewed as too difficult for students to study; however, if it is provided with sufficient scaffolding, students can derive much more than one might expect from studying poetry. In addition to enlightening and teaching students about themselves and their surroundings, the study o

This study aims at shedding some light on teachers’ attitudes and views on poetry as a part of English language studies. More specifically, it intends to explore whether there is support for the generally preconceived idea that poetry’s role in today’s language studies has diminished. This essay presents previous research regarding the development of poetry teaching in classrooms and the importance of reading poetry. Thereafter it includes a smaller qualitative survey, which was sent out to teachers in Swedish upper secondary schools, on their views concerning poetry and its incorporation in t

The author of the article aims to introduce Russian poetic texts into the teaching of Czech students on B1 level. The chosen teaching methodology is based on motivating the students with the use of Czech symbolist poetry by O. Březina and a subsequent analysis of a poem by V. S. Solovyov. Work with the poetry of both authors focuses on perceptual lexicon, which plays key role in uncovering the meaning of a symbolist text. Students can thus gain knowledge of polysemous words and their different author’s connotations in an enticing and creative way. This enhances not only their knowledge of the
