Abstract:
This diploma thesis deals with the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) method in various variants. The thesis describes the theoretical foundations of the PPP method and the most important systematic errors that affect accuracy. The accuracy of the PPP method was evaluated using data from the permanent GNSS station CADM, which is part of the AdMaS research center. Data of the period 2018 – 2019 were processed. The results of combinations of different GNSS and the results of different observation periods were compared. Finally, the accuracy was verified at 299 IGS GNSS stations.

Abstract:
GPS processing, like every processing method for geodetic applications, relies upon least-squares estimation. Quality measures must be defined to assure that the estimates are close to reality. These quality measures are reliable provided that, first, the covariance matrix of the observations (the stochastic model) is well defined and second, the systematic effects are completely removed (i.e., the functional model is good). In the GPS precise point positioning (PPP) the stochastic and functional models are not as complicated as in the differential GPS processing. We will assess the quality of the GPS Precise Point Positioning in this thesis by trying to define more realistic standard deviations for the station position estimates. To refine the functional model from systematic errors, we have 1) used the phase observations to prevent introducing any hardware bias to the observation equations, 2) corrected observations for all systematic effects with amplitudes of more than 1cm, 3) used undifferenced observations to prevent having complications (e.g. linearly related parameters) in the system of observation equations. To have a realistic covariance matrix for the observations we have incorporated the ephemeris uncertainties into the system of observation equations. Based on the above-mentioned issues a PPP processing method is designed and numerically tested on the real data of some of the International GNSS Service stations. The results confirm that undifferenced stochastic-related properties (e.g. degrees of freedom) can be reliable means to recognize the parameterization problem in differenced observation equations. These results also imply that incorporation of the satellite ephemeris uncertainties might improve the estimates of the station positions. The effect of troposphere on the GPS data is also focused in this thesis. Of particular importance is the parameterization problem of the wet troposphere in the observation equations.

This thesis studies the application of Reed Solomon (RS) product codes in optical communication systems, with a focus on improving error correction and optimizing system performance while reducing complexity. This allows the use of low-cost components, a crucial factor in optical access networks where cost is a key consideration. The thesis introduces Passive Optical Networks (PON) and their advances, with emphasis on Point-to-Point (PtP) configurations. It also discusses the need for reliable error correction and explores the channel coding theory, in particular RS codes, their construction, properties and decoding. An important contribution of this thesis is the association of RS codes with Single Parity Check (SPC) codes, analyzed through performance simulations with dynamic packet sizes. Lastly, the thesis evaluates the performance of low-complexity RS product codes in optical channels, particularly in downstream and upstream 50 and 100 Gb/s systems using NRZ and pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) with intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD). The findings show that RS-based product codes improve error correction in optical networks, enhancing reliability while balancing cost and complexity

Abstract:
GNSS positioning in conjunction with the real property is usually used the traditional RTK measuring (Real-Time Kinematic) by SWEPOS network RTK service. This service requires mobile phone coverage or equivalent two-way communication, which can be problematic in areas with poor mobile phone coverage. Under these circumstances, PPP (Point Positioning Precise) could be more useful in real property measures when such services receives the correction data in real time from the satellites. PPP does not require any cell phone coverage, however it requires a communication link, a RTX service to obtain corrections externally from a RTX satellite. The purpose of the study is to examine the possibility of using PPP in real time at the real property as an alternative to traditional GNSS measurements with network RTK. The measurement uncertainty was investigated by starting out from already known coordinates (RIX 95 points). The measurements were performed out at five different locations in Sweden, Gothenburg, Vanersborg, Karlstad, Torsby and Malung-Salen. Measurement data obtained from the observations have been analyzed and compared with real property requirements. The results of the study were obtained in the form of data analyzed by comparison of the known (RIX 95) points. The deviation is known from RIX 95 point recognized in income based on the time factor, the bias of the translative case species, changes in deviation from south to north and from two calculation models, a translation and a transformation. To correct the measured values from the RTX service for a better match to the RIX 95 points calculation models were developed to facilitate the modeling of systematic deviations incurred and meet the demands of real property. Analyzing and examining various relationships have shown that after about 20 minutes of measuring, the precision of the measurements starts to become more stable. Based on the results, the conclusion is that the PPP does not work in real property areas within the core network, however, the method works for forestry and agricultural properties outside the core network. Assuming a modelling through translational alternative transformation, developed in this study is used to adjust the coordinates, the PPP measurement is working in all real property registration measures. This requires that the measurement data is obtained after 20 minutes of measurement or more.

Abstract:
Precise Point Positioning (PPP) allows for accurate Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) based positioning without the immediate need for observations collected by regional station networks. The fundamental drawback of PPP in comparison to differential techniques such as Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) is a significant increase in convergence time. Among a plurality of different measures aiming for a reduction of convergence time, fixing the estimated carrier phase ambiguities to integer values is the key technique for success. The ambiguity resolution asks for a robust functional model and rests upon a two-stage method ruling out first-order ionospheric effects. In this context the Melbourne-Wübbena linear combination of dual-frequency carrier phase and code measurements leverages a simple resolution of widelane ambiguities. As a consequence the in comparison to the wavelength of the ionosphere-free linear combination significantly longer narrowlane wavelength can be used to form the ionosphere-free linear combination. By default the applied functional model is solely based on observations of the Global Positioning System (GPS). However measurements from the GLObal’naya NAvigatsioannaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS) can contribute to improve the model’s stability significantly. Due to the technique used by GLONASS to distinguish individual satellites (Frequency Division Multiple Access, FDMA), the signals broadcast by those satellites differ in their frequencies. The resulting slightly different frequencies constitute a barricade for both modelling and correcting any device-dependent signal delays, e.g. fractional-cycle biases (FCB). These facts limit the applicability of the conventional ambiguity-fixing approach when it comes to GLONASS signals. The present work puts a focus both on investigating the device-dependent GLONASS signal delays and on developing an alternative method for fixing GLONASS ambiguities with the ultimate objective of a combined GPS/GLONASS ambiguity resolution. The alternative ambiguity resolution strategy is based on the pure widelane linear combination, for which reason ionospheric corrections are indispensable. The procedure is applicable for GLONASS in the first instance but reveals equivalent results for both GPS and GLONASS. The disadvantage relative to the conventional approach is the reduced ambiguity fixing success rate

Abstract:
Today it´s possible to achieve low uncertainties when surveying with GNSS. You can expect uncertainties around centimeter-level. The best results are achieved when using relative-surveying with corrections from single-station- or network-RTK. The Swedish mapping, cadastral and land registration authority (Lantmäteriet) is providing a well-developed network of reference stations. The network, called SWEPOS, offers corrections for its users independent of position within the Swedish borders. Far from all nations has the ability or the financial resources to create such an expanded network. Instead, other methods for satellite surveying have been developed, including Precise Point Positioning (PPP). According to G. Hedling (personal communication, 18 march 2015) PPP is well-established in the agriculture and in the maritime mining- and oil-industry. The method is suitable in open areas and it is independently of nearby reference stations. PPP is using what’s called absolute-surveying. The surveying is performed either kinematic or static and the results can be obtained thru post-processing or in real-time. “Lantmäteriet” has interest in testing kinematic PPP in Sweden and for this thesis kinematic PPP in real-time is tested with BNC 2.11 software and corrections is given from the International GPS Service (IGS). According to Bisnath & Gao (2009) it is possible to achieve uncertainties in decimeter-level with kinematic PPP. To determine the reliability of PPP the deviation has been calculated against single-station-RTK. The single-station-RTK coordinates have in this study been used as the “truth” and in an additional test using static measurements it has been investigated if that’s correct. From the static test the initialization time for PPP as well as the quality of the post-processing service CSRS-PPP has been studied. The results show that after nearly an hour of observation the deviation between PPP and single-station-RTK are below 2 dm for the level-coordinates. The initialization time of 15-30 minutes is necessary to achieve uncertainties of a few decimeters. Elements that are affecting the results are disturbance in the ionosphere, high PDOP and number of processed satellites in the software. In which extent it’s not possible to determine. When the signal is lost between rover and satellites a re-initialization of 15-30 minutes is needed. It also shows that it is reasonable to use single-station-RTK as the “truth”. Single-station-RTK deviates a proximately one centimeter in relation to known coordinates. The post-processing service CSRS-PPP gives remarkably good results not far from what single-station-RTK offers.

Abstract:

This report concerns the implementation of a simulation framework to evaluate an emerging peer-to-peer network topology scheme using 8-point hypercircles, entitled HyperCircle. This topology was proposed in order to alleviate some of the drawbacks of current P2P systems evolving in an uncontrolled manner, such as scalability issues, network overload and long search times. The framework is supposed to be used to evaluate the advantages of this new topology. The framework has been built on top of an existing simulator software solution, the selection of which was an important part of the development. Weighing different variables such as scalability and API usability, the selection fell on OverSim, an open-source discreet-event simulator based on OMNET++.

After formalizing the protocol for easier implementation, as well as extending it for better performance, implementation followed using C++ with OverSim’s API and simulation library. Implemented as a module (alongside other stock modules providing their own protocols such as Chord and Kademlia), it can be used in OverSim to simulate a user-defined network using one of the simulation routine applications provided (or using a custom application written by the user). For the purposes of this thesis, the standard application KBRTestApp was used; an application sending test messages between randomly selected nodes, while adding and removing nodes at specific time intervals. The adding and removing of nodes can be configured with probability parameters.

Tentative testing shows that this implementation of the HyperCircle protocol has a certain performance gain over the OverSim implementations of the Chord and Kademlia protocols, measurable in the time it takes a message to get from sender to recipient. Further testing is outside the scope of this thesis.

Abstract:
The research of this paper-based dissertation is focused on the Fast Precise Point Positioning (Fast-PPP) technique. The novelty relies on using an accurate ionosphere model, in combination with the standard precise satellite clock and orbit products, to reduce the convergence time of state-of-the-art high-accuracy navigation techniques from approximately one hour to few minutes. My first contribution to the Fast-PPP technique as a Ph.D. student has been the design and implementation of a novel user navigation filter, based on the raw treatment of undifferenced multi-frequency code and carrier-phase Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements. The innovative strategy of the filter avoids applying the usual ionospheric-free combination to the GNSS observables, exploiting the full capacity of new multi-frequency signals and increasing the robustness of Fast-PPP in challenging environments where the sky visibility is reduced. It has been optimised to take advantage of the corrections required to compensate the delays (i.e., errors) affecting the GNSS signals. The Fast-PPP corrections, and most important, their corrections uncertainties (i.e., the confidence bounds) are added as additional equations in the navigation filter to obtain Precise Point Positioning (PPP) in few minutes. A second contribution performed with the new user filter, has been the consolidation of the precise ionospheric modelling of Fast-PPP and its extension from a regional to a global scale. The correct use of the confidence bounds has been found of great importance when navigating in the low-latitude areas of the equator, where the ionosphere is difficult to be accurately modelled. Even in such scenario, a great consistency has been achieved between the actual positioning errors with respect to the formal errors, as demonstrated using similar figures of merit used in civil aviation, as the Stanford plot. A third contribution within this dissertation has been the characterisation of the accuracy of different ionospheric models currently used in GNSS. The assessment uses actual, unambiguous and undifferenced carrier-phase measurements, thanks to the centimetre-level modelling capability within the Fast-PPP technique. Not only the errors of the ionosphere models have been quantified in absolute and relative terms, but also, their effect on navigation.

ITC/USA 2015 Conference Proceedings / The Fifty-First Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 26-29, 2015 / Bally's Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, NV
The use of differential GPS post-procesing for precise trajectography computation has been widely used since early 90s. Up to recent dates, installation of a GPS receiver in a well known position (base station) has been mandatory. Operating range from this base station varies from 50 km up to 100 km, depending on the accuracy required, which impose single or dual frequency GPS technique. Nowadays, the huge amount of GPS base stations continuous logging data worldwide have allowed to improve the error models a lot. Using these precise models, it is possible to achieve centimeter accuracy in GPS trajectography by using only one GPS receiver without range to a base station restrictions. This technique is called Precise Point Positioning (PPP). The performance results for PPP obtained after a real 10 flights campaign will be presented.

Abstract:
Different Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) constellations are available these days. This has led to an increase in the number of satellites available for the user, and that presents different performance levels for the user requirements like accuracy and convergence time. However, these benefits come from different constellations that have different reference times and for some, different frequencies. At the same time, the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) has also been presented as being a position solution within a certain level of accuracy and precision. Therefore, it is important to investigate the potential benefits from the PPP with a view to using a single or multi-constellation. These investigations include accuracy, precision, and convergence time. In addition, it is important to look at the individual performance of these constellations regarding the above improvements. This will give a clear decision about adopting a single or multi-constellation. It will also provide an independent solution, for instance for the station coordinates and troposphere, and independent estimated station velocities, without additional cost. This research has been conducted in three stages. Firstly, the research begins with an evaluation of the GPS and the GLONASS (GLO) constellation geometry using a new approach for computing the cumulative dilution of precision (DOP) rather than the conventional DOP which was found to be latitude-dependent. Then it investigates the achievable station coordinate accuracy from PPP scenarios for static positioning after choosing the most appropriate PPP strategy that needs to be followed. Furthermore, the effect of different precise products (satellite orbits and clocks) on the PPP solutions and the difference between those products has been covered. It has been proven that PPP solutions can reach the same precision as a Global Double-Difference (GDD) GPS solution. Most importantly, the PPP GLO is found to be capable of producing similar precision and accuracy when compared to PPP GPS as well as the GDD GPS solution. Secondly, this research also investigates the conventional strategy (using a model for the hydrostatic component and estimating the wet component) for estimating the troposphere Zenith Total Delay (ZTD) from the PPP solutions with an evaluation of the obtained accuracy of the tropospheric ZTD from four tropospheric models. It also presents an alternative strategy (estimating both components using different mapping functions and different process noises) for estimating the tropospheric ZTD from the PPP that can give millimeters of ZTD accuracy without affecting the station coordinate estimation and without relying on any metrological data or models. Validations have been conducted for the new strategy using PPP GPS, PPP GLO and PPP GPS+GLO. Regional validation was conducted over seven consecutive days for seven weeks, using the Ordnance Survey of Great Britain (OSGB) stations in the UK, and long-term (over one year) validation was conducted using 22 stations from the OSGB. The regional and long-term validations have been conducted using three different final precise products (satellite orbits (SP3) and clocks (CLK)), which are the EMX, ESA and GFZ. A global validation using ~76 IGS stations was conducted over a different period. This was conducted in three stages, using the final EMX, final IGS and real-time IGS precise products. It was found that this approach can be used in real-time as well as in post processing without a significant difference between the results. Finally, this research has investigated the potential of using the PPP GLO for crustal motion separate to using the PPP GPS. Consistent horizontal station rates were found between PPP GPS and GDD GPS solutions. It was also concluded that it should be possible to use the PPP GLO for crustal motion, as an independent and precise solution. However, there was a bias in the orientation components of the estimated horizontal station rates between the PPP GLO and both other solutions (PPP GPS and GDD GPS), which was concluded to be a system bias rather than a strategy bias.

RamaSarma, Vaidyanathan. "A Coverage Area Estimation Model for Interference-Limited Non-Line-of-Sight Point-to-Multipoint Fixed Broadband Wireless Communication Systems." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35276.

Abstract:
First-generation, line-of-sight (LOS) fixed broadband wireless access techniques have been around for several years. However, services based on this technology have been limited in scope to service areas where transceivers can communicate with their base stations, unimpeded by trees, buildings and other obstructions. This limitation has serious consequences in that the system can deliver only 50% to 70% coverage within a given cell radius, thus affecting earned revenue. Next generation broadband fixed wireless access techniques are aimed at achieving a coverage area greater than 90%. To achieve this target, these techniques must be based on a point-to-multipoint (PMP) cellular architecture with low base station antennas, thus possessing the ability to operate in true non-line-of-sight (NLOS) conditions. A possible limiting factor for these systems is link degradation due to interference. This thesis presents a new model to estimate the levels of co-channel interference for such systems operating within the 3.5 GHz multichannel multipoint distribution service (MMDS) band. The model is site-specific in that it uses statistical building/roof height distribution parameters obtained from practically modeling several metropolitan cities in the U.S. using geographic information system (GIS) tools. This helps to obtain a realistic estimate and helps analyze the tradeoff between cell radius and modulation complexity. Together, these allow the system designer to decide on an optimal location for placement of customer premises equipment (CPE) within a given cell area.

Abstract:
The contamination of several parenteral nutrition bags (PNB) with unknown bacterium started an investigation, which is still ongoing. The essential objectives were: to characterize this bacterium taxonomically to allow to recognize it in others contexts. Sequencing the rrs gene (encoding 16S rRNA) allowed to position the unknown bacterium in the family Enteriobacteriaceae, close to genera Ewingella, Rahnella, Serratia, Yersinia and Hafnia. Whole genome sequencing was done. Five genes were used for a MLSA (multi-locus sequence analysis) study. The MLSA phylogenetic tree showed the bacterium (six isolates were only one strain) to represent a new genus of the family Enteriobacteriaceae, named Rouxiella, the species being Rouxiella chamberiensis. One isolate have been designated as the type strain and deposited in two collections in two different countries (CIP, France and DSMZ, Germany). The physical and biochemical properties of R. chamberiensis were used in a formal species description. R. chamberiensis failed to grow at 37 °C, this does not plead for a pathogenic action for human, negative results in tests for reduction of nitrate (which is rare in the Enterobacteriaceae, excepted Erwinia), and fermented a few carbohydrates. The name Rouxiella chamberiensis has been approved by publication in International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology. When this new genus and species has been published, other researchers have isolated environmental strains close to Rouxiella chamberiensis. Collaboration with a German team allowed us to describe two new species of Rouxiella, "R. badensis" and "R. sylvae"

Atulim (2002) and Racanicchi (2003) had planned and implemented a geodetic GPS network in São Carlos city, which needed maintenance and revision. The proposals of this dissertation had consisted of: i) to bring up to date the GPS geodetic network in the city of São Carlos and to make it compatible with the SIRGAS2000 (Geocentric Reference System of Americas 2000), with new network adjustment and injunction in two geodesic vertices in the urban area of São Carlos, homologated by the IBGE after the implantation of the original geodetic network in 2003; ii) to evaluate and to compare the new results of the geodetic network coordinates obtained with the relative positioning through the tracking of artificial satellites, according to technology NAVSTAR/GPS and adjusted through the Least Squares Method, with results of coordinates obtained through the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) Method, processed by PPP on-line services. Analyzing the results obtained in this dissertation, it was possible to evaluate that the application of PPP Method, since that followed the specific orientations of each on-line service used, takes care perfectly to the required to support of cadastral registry and location services for the most varied purposes, however it does not substitute yet other services that demand highest degree of accuracy only obtained with vectors and network adjustment with statistical control of processes that demand high computational activity.

This thesis opens with the question of representation and its thresholds' mobility, it evolves towards the question of perception, of desequilibrium. An analysis of Brunelleschi's Tavoletta, — through which the world is to be seen within a representation at the exactness, that makes screen upon the real —, embodies the the viewer who adjusts between his hands the represented to the real.
Technologies are constantly advancing in the areas of distributed systems and parallel computing. This is because the purchase of electronic equipment is accessible, so companies increasingly are betting on cheap solutions for every one to access. Accordingly, there is a problem that the wasteful use of such equipment. Most of these have access to the execution of computation, however, a large part of their time sit idle. In this context, this dissertation proposal presents BSPonP2P model to minimize the problem trying to enjoy this waste for any useful purpose. In the proposed model, a P2P Desktop Grid that seeks to use equipment to perform useful computing competitor among its users and Desktop Grid network users way approach will be used. The BSPonP2P will create an environment with models based on structured and unstructured P2P architecture approaches coming, that will be implemented to streamline the management and communication of information within the network. Another difference that the proposed model will have is the use of Bulk Synchronous Parallel (BSP) parallel programming model, which creates an environment for process execution dependencies validating and improving the communication between them. From reviews of metrics such as memory, computation, data communications equipment and an index called PM is created. This index is periodically valuated to define migration as the environment variable α, which is directly linked to the supersteps’ barriers. Based on the ratings obtained from the distributions of processes in a heterogeneous environment created, BSPonP2P model is demonstrated effective. This is because the model had good results, for example, the simple execution application compared to running the BSPonP2P there was a smaller increase than 4% in execution time. Moreover, the implementation of 26 cases with 2000 supersteps and alpha = 16 yielded a gain of 6% from 24 migration process. Thus, atom scientific contribution opted for the use of networks in P2P Grids with BSP applications using metrics such as memory, computation, communication and data equipment for environmental assessment.

In this dissertation the Precise Point Positioning (PPP), in static and kinematic modes, using Extended Kalman Filter is investigated. The errors due to troposphere refraction, relativity, movement of Earth's rotation, tide loading, satellite antenna phase center offset and phase wind-up were corrected. The effects due to ionosphere were minimized through the Ionospheric-Free linear combination. The widelane combination, involving phase and pseduorange, was used to detect cycle slips. When a cycle slip is detected, a new ambiguity is initialized in the place of the old one. The implementations were accomplished in the FILTER_FCT software. To show the accuracy in the PPP, three experiments were accomplished: PPP in the static mode, PPP in the static mode simulating the kinematic mode and PPP in kinematic mode. In the first and second experiments, data from PPTE, VICO, RIOD and FORT stations belonging to Brazilian Network for Continuous Monitoring (RBMC), and FRDN station located in Fredericton, Canada, were used. In the third experiment data from a GPS receiver on board of the CHAMP satellite were used. In static PPP, the modification of the coordinates variance and the receiver clock was used as processing strategy. The discrepanc ies obtained in the static positioning were on the order of decimeters, except for VICO and RIOD stations where they were on the order of centimeters. When the clock receiver variance was increased from (3.300)ø mø to (10.000)ø mø , the values of the discrepancies also increased, on the order of centimeters. Then, there is influence of the receiver clock variance in the estimated coordinates. The residual part of the tropospheric effects was estimated with the introduction of a scale factor in the processing.

Abstract:
This work covers the implementation of a raw Ethernet communication module for the Open MPI message passing library. Thereby it focuses on both the reduction of the communication latency for small messages and maximum possible compatibility. Especially the need for particular network devices, adapted network device drivers or kernel patches is avoided. The work is divided into three major parts: First, the networking subsystem of the version 2.6 Linux kernel is analyzed. Second, an Ethernet protocol family is implemented as a loadable kernel module, consisting of a basic datagram protocol (EDP), providing connection-less and unreliable datagram transport, and a streaming protocol (ESP), providing connection-oriented, sequenced and reliable byte streams. The protocols use the standard device driver interface of the Linux kernel for data transmission and reception. Their services are made available to user-space applications through the standard socket interface. Last, the existing Open MPI TCP communication module is ported atop the ESP. With bare EDP/ESP sockets a message latency of about 30 us could be achieved for small messages, which compared to the TCP latency of about 40 us is a reduction of 25 %.

Abstract:
We develop an optimization-based approach for a point-to-point route planning problem that arises in many large scale delivery systems(for example, less-than-truckload freight, rail, mail and package delivery, communications). In these settings, a firm which must ship goods between many origin and destination pairs on a network needs to specify a route for each origin-destination pair so as to minimize transportation costs and/or transit times. Typically, the cost structure is very complicated. The approach discussed in this paper exploits the structure of the problem to decompose it into two smaller subproblems, each amenable to solution by a combination of optimization and heuristic techniques. One subproblem is an 'assignment' problem with capacity constraints. The other subproblem is a mixed-integer multicommodity flow problem. We propose solution methods based on Lagrangian relaxation for each subproblem. Computational results with these methods and with a heuristic procedure for the multicommodity flow problem on a problem met in practice are encouraging and suggest that mathematical programming methods can be successfully applied to large-scale problems in delivery systems planning and other problems in logistical system design.

Abstract:
In this thesis the structure of the outer core is investigated with PKP core phases. The knowledge of the physical properties of the earth′s deep interior in this region is important for the understanding of geodynamical processes like the convective flow in the liquid outer core and the differential rotation of the earth′s inner core.
The first part of this thesis describes the investigation of the PKP caustic point B near 145 °. For this purpose a cumulative amplitude distance curve is determined and compared with theoretical amplitude distance curves of different standard earth models. The data are broadband seismograms of the German Regional Seismic Network (GRSN) and the Gräfenberg Array (GRF). In order to measure the absolute amplitudes of the PKP phases, a WWSSN-SP filter is applied to the seismograms. The source regions are located in the South Pacific near Vanuatu Island (4 earthquakes) and on the French atolls Mururoa and Fangataufa (4 explosions). The advantage of a standardized network of seismic stations and the usage of station and magnitude corrections is a reduction of the scatter of the amplitude data. There is even less scatter than in studies with long period amplitude data (Häge, 1981). Another reason for the reduced scattering is the use of events with an impulsive source time function. Only the low scattering of the amplitude values makes it possible to interpret the data. More scattering of the data would have prevented an interpretation. The theoretical amplitude curves are similar in the caustic B distance range. The Q depth distribution for P and S waves used for calculating the synthetic seismograms is a combination of the values of the models CIT112 and PREM. The amplitudes determined with the help of this kind of model are slightly higher than the actually measured amplitudes. However, this needs not be taken into account because the interpretation is based on the position of the caustic peak. Therefore I rejected the computation of an improved Q model.
Regarding the position of the caustic point there are two categories of earth models. The first group consists of the models IASP91 and 1066B with their maxima at 144.6 ° and 144.7 ° respectively. AK135, PREM and SP6 belong to a second group of models with caustic peaks at 145.1 ° and 145.2 ° (SP6). The measured curve has its maximum at 145 °. All distances refer to a source depth of 200 km. For a surface focus the increase in distance is 0.454 °. Therefore the peaks of the models AK135 and PREM are only 0.1 ° beside the maximum of the measured amplitude curve. The main result of this investigation is the amplitude distance curve in the vicinity of the cusp B. The curve determines the position of this point with an accuracy of ± 0.15 ° and points to earth models which would be good for modeling the amplitudes in the distance range of the PKP caustic B. The synthetic seismograms calculated for AK135 and PREM together with a standardized Q model fit the measured amplitude curve equally well.
In the second part of this study the structure of the transition zone to the earth′s inner core is investigated by using the spectral decay of the diffracted wave PKP(BC)diff at point C of the travel time curve. The physical process of diffraction is responsible for the strong reduction in amplitude of this wave. The influence of the diffraction on the seismic signal strongly depends on frequency. The interpretation of this phenomenon requires a calculation of decay spectra. In practice the attenuation of the PKP(BC)diff signal for eight frequencies between 6.4 s and 1.25 Hz are measured and visualized as a decay spectrum. The shape of a spectrum is characteristic of the velocity gradient above the inner core boundary (ICB). Those earthquakes whose core phases are recorded as diffracted core phases BCdiff lie beyond 150 °. In this distance range there are the epicenters of the Tonga-Fiji slab. The broadband waveform data of the earthquakes in this region is used in this study. Decay spectra of waveform data which are not corrected for station site effects are incompatible with standard earth models. Therefore a spectral station correction is applied, which was especially determined for this purpose. The investigation starts with a review of a number of well-known earth models like PREM, IASP91, AK135Q, PREM2, SP6, OICM2 and a version of PREM. All these models have different velocity structures at the ICB. It is shown that models with a reduced velocity gradient above the ICB agree with the data rather than models without such a transition zone. For verification purposes a model without such a reduced gradient (PREM) is completed with different kinds of gradient zones to calculate synthetic seismograms. Two variants of the PREM correspond with the measured decay constants. The decay constants of model PD47 are very close to the measured ones. This model has a 380 km thick negative gradient above the ICB. Nevertheless it is not a realistic model because point C lies in a unrealistic great distance. As a result of the low velocity zone above the inner core there is a differential travel time between the PKP(AB) and the PKP(DF) phase (also PKIKP) which is too short. This would have to be compensated by a correction of the velocities in the inner core. Thus PD27a is the most suitable model which does not have the above mentioned disadvantages. PD27a has a 150 km thick layer of constant velocity above the ICB. This kind of velocity model is compatible with geodynamical theories according to which an enrichment of light elements above the ICB is present and powers the convection in the outer earth core by its buoyancy.

Abstract:
[EN] Precise Point Positioning (PPP) method involves an absolute positioning technique from a single receiver with GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems). Its theoretical basis consists of solving the position with observations using a single receiver, with clock and orbit state models, among other products. The main advance concerning the current differential technique is that differential or relative positioning uses the double-differences solution that requires, at least, two receivers to get a precise position or a receiver connected to a network of reference stations. However, until recently, and from a practical point of view, a precise absolute positioning with centimeter accuracy with a single GNSS receiver was considered unfeasible. The reason was the difficulty in cancellation of errors and the ambiguity resolution. The main factor that limits Precise Point Positioning (PPP) accuracy is the dependence on external information, which models the error sources, that is to say: the performance of the orbit and clock products, the quality of the observations, and the effects of the un-modeled or un-calibrated error sources. Precise ionospheric corrections and troposphere state models are also essential in order to improve positioning at centimeter level. Furthermore, in real-time PPP precise streams of products and state models are needed, and they must meet certain requirements of latency and continuous availability. In the case study of real-time positioning, the PPP technique is very sensible to gaps and outliers in the reception of the products and fluctuations in the constellation, producing lost of convergence, delay in initialization and a lack of accuracy in the results. Nowadays, this situation is changing, but it needs to evolve even more, because the real-time determination and the performance of the orbital parameters, clock states or other modeled errors of the GNSS satellites and signals, are still in a stage of improvement by the International GNSS Service, by the Analysis Centers and by researches all around the world. Therefore, the objective of this investigation was the study of Precise Point Positioning technique applied to the real-time case study, considering the performance of the available products in several sceneries and environments. The study focused on its application and how to improve limitations in the performance. The main tasks developed are: -A preliminary study of the multi - constellation context, the state of the art of Precise Point Positioning technique and modeling error sources, (chapters 1 and 2). -The review of the emission of the state models into a standard format and the discussion of the limitations in the alternatives in the generation of the models, (chapters 3 and 4). -The analysis of the optimization of this method with the development of new constellations, by means of the test of new products, and multiple simultaneous observations performed, (chapter 6). -To explore the possibilities of real-time recovering of integer ambiguities for PPP and the impact in the performance, providing practical demonstrations with experimental and standardized approaches, (chapter 7). -To study tactics to provide combined products in quasi-real time and real-time latency, (chapter 8), and in a regional or continental frame, with own applied solutions, (chapter 9). -The design and development of processing and analysis tools, (chapter 5), monitoring and distribution of results with the real-time PPP method, (chapter 10), and the study of potential applications, (chapter 11).

Abstract:
Service providers within an enterprise network are often governed by Client Service Contracts (CSC) that specify, among other constraints, the rate at which a particular service instance may be accessed. The service can be accessed via multiple points (typically middleware appliances) in a proxy tier configuration. The CSC and thus the rate specified have to be collectively respected by all the middleware appliances. The appliances locally shape the service requests to respect the global contract. We investigate the case where the CSC limits the rate to a service to X requests with an enforcement/observation interval of T seconds across all the middleware appliances. In this thesis, we define and evaluate the performance of Credit-based Algorithm for Service Traffic Shaping (CASTS), a decentralized algorithm for service traffic shaping in middleware appliances, in both a simulation and a realistic production level enterprise network setting. We show that CASTS respects the CSC and improves the responsiveness of the system to the variations of the input rate and leads to larger service capacity when compared to the traditional static allocation approach.

Abstract:
The past two decades have seen a surge in the number of applications requiring precise positioning data. Modern cellular networks offer many services based on the user's location, such as emergency services (e.g., E911), and emerging wireless sensor networks are being used in applications spanning environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, warehouse and manufacturing logistics, and traffic monitoring, just to name a few. In these sensor networks in particular, obtaining precise positioning data of the sensors gives vital context to the measurements being reported. While the Global Positioning System (GPS) has traditionally been used to obtain this positioning data, the deployment locations of these cellular and sensor networks in GPS-constrained environments (e.g., cities, indoors, etc.), along with the need for reliable positioning, requires a localization scheme that does not rely solely on GPS. This has lead to localization being performed entirely by the network infrastructure itself, or by the network infrastructure aided, in part, by GPS. In the literature, benchmarking localization performance in these networks has traditionally been done in a deterministic manner. That is, for a fixed setup of anchors (nodes with known location) and a target (a node with unknown location) a commonly used benchmark for localization error, such as the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB), can be calculated for a given localization strategy, e.g., time-of-arrival (TOA), angle-of-arrival (AOA), etc. While this CRLB calculation provides excellent insight into expected localization performance, its traditional treatment as a deterministic value for a specific setup is limited. Rather than trying to gain insight into a specific setup, network designers are more often interested in aggregate localization error statistics within the network as a whole. Questions such as: "What percentage of the time is localization error less than x meters in the network?" are commonplace. In order to answer these types of questions, network designers often turn to simulations; however, these come with many drawbacks, such as lengthy execution times and the inability to provide fundamental insights due to their inherent ``block box'' nature. Thus, this dissertation presents the first analytical solution with which to answer these questions. By leveraging tools from stochastic geometry, anchor positions and potential target positions can be modeled by Poisson point processes (PPPs). This allows for the CRLB of position error to be characterized over all setups of anchor positions and potential target positions realizable within the network. This leads to a distribution of the CRLB, which can completely characterize localization error experienced by a target within the network, and can consequently be used to answer questions regarding network-wide localization performance. The particular CRLB distribution derived in this dissertation is for fourth-generation (4G) and fifth-generation (5G) sub-6GHz networks employing a TOA localization strategy. Recognizing the tremendous potential that stochastic geometry has in gaining new insight into localization, this dissertation continues by further exploring the union of these two fields. First, the concept of localizability, which is the probability that a mobile is able to obtain an unambiguous position estimate, is explored in a 5G, millimeter wave (mm-wave) framework. In this framework, unambiguous single-anchor localization is possible with either a line-of-sight (LOS) path between the anchor and mobile or, if blocked, then via at least two NLOS paths. Thus, for a single anchor-mobile pair in a 5G, mm-wave network, this dissertation derives the mobile's localizability over all environmental realizations this anchor-mobile pair is likely to experience in the network. This is done by: (1) utilizing the Boolean model from stochastic geometry, which statistically characterizes the random positions, sizes, and orientations of reflectors (e.g., buildings) in the environment, (2) considering the availability of first-order (i.e., single-bounce) reflections as well as the LOS path, and (3) considering the possibility that reflectors can either facilitate or block reflections. In addition to the derivation of the mobile's localizability, this analysis also reveals that unambiguous localization, via reflected NLOS signals exclusively, is a relatively small contributor to the mobile's overall localizability. Lastly, using this first-order reflection framework developed under the Boolean model, this dissertation then statistically characterizes the NLOS bias present on range measurements. This NLOS bias is a common phenomenon that arises when trying to measure the distance between two nodes via the time delay of a transmitted signal. If the LOS path is blocked, then the extra distance that the signal must travel to the receiver, in excess of the LOS path, is termed the NLOS bias. Due to the random nature of the propagation environment, the NLOS bias is a random variable, and as such, its distribution is sought. As before, assuming NLOS propagation is due to first-order reflections, and that reflectors can either facilitate or block reflections, the distribution of the path length (i.e., absolute time delay) of the first-arriving multipath component (MPC) is derived. This result is then used to obtain the first NLOS bias distribution in the localization literature that is based on the absolute delay of the first-arriving MPC for outdoor time-of-flight (TOF) range measurements. This distribution is shown to match exceptionally well with commonly assumed gamma and exponential NLOS bias models in the literature, which were only attained previously through heuristic or indirect methods. Finally, the flexibility of this analytical framework is utilized by further deriving the angle-of-arrival (AOA) distribution of the first-arriving MPC at the mobile. This distribution gives novel insight into how environmental obstacles affect the AOA and also represents the first AOA distribution, of any kind, derived under the Boolean model. In summary, this dissertation uses the analytical tools offered by stochastic geometry to gain new insights into localization metrics by performing analyses over the entire ensemble of infrastructure or environmental realizations that a target is likely to experience in a network.
Doctor of Philosophy
When speaking in terms of localization, the network infrastructure consists of what are called anchors, which are simply nodes (points) with a known location. These can be base stations, WiFi access points, or designated sensor nodes, depending on the network. In trying to determine the position of a target (i.e., a user, or a mobile), various measurements can be made between this target and the anchor nodes in close proximity. These measurements are typically distance (range) measurements or angle (bearing) measurements. Localization algorithms then process these measurements to obtain an estimate of the target position. The performance of a given localization algorithm (i.e., estimator) is typically evaluated by examining the distance, in meters, between the position estimates it produces vs. the actual (true) target position. This is called the positioning error of the estimator. There are various benchmarks that bound the best (lowest) error that these algorithms can hope to achieve; however, these benchmarks depend on the particular setup of anchors and the target. The benchmark of localization error considered in this dissertation is the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB). To determine how this benchmark of localization error behaves over the entire network, all of the various setups of anchors and the target that would arise in the network must be considered. Thus, this dissertation uses a field of statistics called stochastic geometry} to model all of these random placements of anchors and the target, which represent all the setups that can be experienced in the network. Under this model, the probability distribution of this localization error benchmark across the entirety of the network is then derived. This distribution allows network designers to examine localization performance in the network as a whole, rather than just for a specific setup, and allows one to obtain answers to questions such as: "What percentage of the time is localization error less than x meters in the network?" Next, this dissertation examines a concept called localizability, which is the probability that a target can obtain a unique position estimate. Oftentimes localization algorithms can produce position estimates that congregate around different potential target positions, and thus, it is important to know when algorithms will produce estimates that congregate around a unique (single) potential target position; hence the importance of localizability. In fifth generation (5G), millimeter wave (mm-wave) networks, only one anchor is needed to produce a unique target position estimate if the line-of-sight (LOS) path between the anchor and the target is unimpeded. If the LOS path is impeded, then a unique target position can still be obtained if two or more non-line-of-sight (NLOS) paths are available. Thus, over all possible environmental realizations likely to be experienced in the network by this single anchor-mobile pair, this dissertation derives the mobile's localizability, or in this case, the probability the LOS path or at least two NLOS paths are available. This is done by utilizing another analytical tool from stochastic geometry known as the Boolean model, which statistically characterizes the random positions, sizes, and orientations of reflectors (e.g., buildings) in the environment. Under this model, considering the availability of first-order (i.e., single-bounce) reflections as well as the LOS path, and considering the possibility that reflectors can either facilitate or block reflections, the mobile's localizability is derived. This result reveals the roles that the LOS path and the NLOS paths play in obtaining a unique position estimate of the target. Using this first-order reflection framework developed under the Boolean model, this dissertation then statistically characterizes the NLOS bias present on range measurements. This NLOS bias is a common phenomenon that arises when trying to measure the distance between two nodes via the time-of-flight (TOF) of a transmitted signal. If the LOS path is blocked, then the extra distance that the signal must travel to the receiver, in excess of the LOS path, is termed the NLOS bias. As before, assuming NLOS propagation is due to first-order reflections and that reflectors can either facilitate or block reflections, the distribution of the path length (i.e., absolute time delay) of the first-arriving multipath component (MPC) (or first-arriving ``reflection path'') is derived. This result is then used to obtain the first NLOS bias distribution in the localization literature that is based on the absolute delay of the first-arriving MPC for outdoor TOF range measurements. This distribution is shown to match exceptionally well with commonly assumed NLOS bias distributions in the literature, which were only attained previously through heuristic or indirect methods. Finally, the flexibility of this analytical framework is utilized by further deriving angle-of-arrival (AOA) distribution of the first-arriving MPC at the mobile. This distribution yields the probability that, for a specific angle, the first-arriving reflection path arrives at the mobile at this angle. This distribution gives novel insight into how environmental obstacles affect the AOA and also represents the first AOA distribution, of any kind, derived under the Boolean model. In summary, this dissertation uses the analytical tools offered by stochastic geometry to gain new insights into localization metrics by performing analyses over all of the possible infrastructure or environmental realizations that a target is likely to experience in a network.

The growing demand for broadband services such as high- speed data, video, audio and multimedia, has lead to the use of point-multipoint radio systems operating in frequencies above of 10 GHz, that are not yet allocated for other services and allow the use of the large bandwidths required by these services. At these frequencies, the main contribution for the propagation losses is due to rain attenuation. The rain directly affects the area coverage and the performance of systems operating at these frequencies. In the present work, an empirical model is developed for predicting the cumulative distribution of rain attenuation prediction, using the ITU-R data base and results of propagation measurements campaigns performed in Brazil. The model provides better results than others currently found in the technical literature and allows the evaluation of the impact of rain attenuation in the coverage of LMDS (Local Multipoint Distribution System/Local Multipoint Communications System). Also, two models were developed for predicting distributions of differential rain attenuation, an essential factor for interference effects and its impact in LMDS performance. Finally, models were developed for the prediction of total and average duration of rain attenuation events, also relevant for systems performance assessment.

Abstract:
The design of a mixed-use market, three axes of influence was studied on a site at the end of King Street in Alexandria, VA. A semicircular form was developed that terminated the main circulation axis down King Street, continued the free form edge of the Potomac, and acted as a visual beginning to the "new world" of Washington, DC across the river. While the marketplace still remains as an enduring and appealing image of the city, it has diminished in recent years. Climate controlled indoor malls and shopping centers sprawl across the . country, and many of the real marketplaces have fallen into disrepair, physically and symbolically losing their traditional role as a forum for the people. There has, however, been a resurgence of interest in the markets in the past decade. As people grow tired of impersonal service, the poor quality of goods and produce, and the often nondescript atmosphere, many of the older markets are being re-inhabited by farmers, artists and others seeking to sell their products. Around many urban centers, people are rediscovering the simple premise of the market which serves as a canvas for the explosion of colors, sights, sounds and smells it contains.

The advent of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) point cloud collection has significantly improved the ability to model the world in precise, fine, three-dimensional details. The objective of this research was to demonstrate accurate, foundation methods for fusing LiDAR data and photogrammetric imagery and their potential for change detection. The scope of the project was to investigate optical image to LiDAR registration methods, focusing on several dissimilar image types including Optical Bar Camera (OBC), high resolution aerial frame, and WorldView 1 satellite with varying LiDAR point densities. An innovative optical image to LiDAR data registration process was established. This approach was demonstrated for one image type using the rational polynomial coefficients (RPC) representation of the panoramic math model improving accuracy from 1.9 m to 0.5 m root mean square (RMS) error. Comparison of stereo imagery point cloud data to the LiDAR point cloud using a 90% confidence interval highlighted changes that included small scale (< 50cm), sensor dependent change and large scale, new home construction change. This research also proposed a fused LiDAR and stereo image base layer as the foundation for further LiDAR/image fusion.

Abstract:
The work within this Thesis is concerned with the manufacturing processes associated with the production of blade root mounting slots in aeroengine compressor and turbine discs. Typically slots are of dovetail or fir-tree geometry dependent on specific design requirements. The state of the art process across the industry is broaching however, despite achieving required geometrical tolerances and surface integrity for decades the process is not without its disadvantages. Primarily these include the inflexibility of the process, machine tool cost; size and cutting forces, complexity of tooling and set up and further the limited level of control of the process beyond tooling design. This has led to research into alternative processes across a range of conventional and non-conventional manufacturing techniques. Work presented here focuses on two key technology areas, namely point grinding and electrolytic point grinding. The former applies small diameter single layer grinding wheels on a high speed machining centre with spindle capability in the region of 60,000rpm. Target geometry was a complex fir-tree root form requiring dimensional control to within +/- 5um and a surface integrity in line with critical aerospace components. The later process investigated the unification of point grinding and electrochemical machining on a vertical machining centre to assess process performance across a range of variables.

Abstract:
Given the current developments and advances in the scientific and technological aspects of human knowledge and introducing new approaches in various fields of telecommunication technologies and industries, there has been an increasing growth in its players' plans and a positive change in their outlooks in order to achieve the target of "anywhere and anytime access". Recent developments of WiMAX (Worldwide interoperability for Microwave Access) networks, as a sign of increasing needs and demands for new telecommunication services and capabilities, have led to revolutions in global telecommunication which should be perceived properly in terms of the commercial and technical aspects in order to enjoy the new opportunities. Most experts believe that WiMAX technology is a preliminary step to develop Fourth Generation networks known as 4G technologies. It has not only succeeded in the utilization of several of the latest telecommunication techniques in the form of unique practical standards, but also paved the way for the quantitative and qualitative developments of high-speed broadband access. IEEE 802.16 Standard introduces several advantages, and one of them is the support for Quality of Services (QoS) at the Media Access Control (MAC) level. For these purposes, the standard defines several scheduling classes at MAC layer to treat service flow in a different way, depending on QoS requirements. In this thesis, we have proposed a new QoS framework for Point-to-Multi Point (PMP) 802.16 systems operating in Time Division Duplexing (TDD) mode over a WirelessMAN-OFDM physical layer. The proposed framework consists of a Call Admission Control (CAC) module and a scheduling scheme for the uplink traffic as well as a simple frame allocation scheme. The proposed CAC module interacts with the uplink scheduler status and it makes its decision based on the scheduler queue status; on the other hand, the proposed scheduling scheme for the uplink traffic aims to support realtime flows and adapts the frame-by-frame allocations to the current needs of the connections, with respect to the grants boundaries fixed by the CAC module. Extensive OPNET simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed architecture.
