Abstract:
The monograph examines geopolitics from the point of view of filling its content with the meanings of geopolitical culture, in which not only geographical, but also historical images occupy a prominent place, and linguistic constructions allow us to attach a symbolic meaning to established concepts. Geopolitical culture, like any other, acts as a tool for processing consciousness and transforming space. The space itself, from the perspective of studies of geopolitical culture, turns into a multidimensional model that simultaneously combines real objects and elements related to the world of geopolitical imagination. It is intended for specialists in geopolitics, history and theory of international relations, sociology and cultural studies. It will also be of interest to a wide range of readers.

Full text
Abstract:
The monograph presents conceptual approaches and practical recommendations for the formation of a system for monitoring pricing processes in the economy. The main idea of creating such a system is to ensure the transparency of pricing processes, the exclusion of price manipulation practices, and the implementation of the principle of fair business conduct. The presented research examines the problems of setting final prices in the economy on a systematic basis: from an institutional point of view, economic practices, features of legal regulation and information support of pricing processes in the economy are described. On the example of a large amount of factual material, the inconsistency of purely market relations and the risks that arise in this case are shown, the need for monitoring pricing processes is proved. For a wide range of readers interested in the nature of pricing processes in methodological and practical aspects.

Abstract:
The monograph presents the author's view on the legal quality of law from the point of view of the theory of law as the norms of coordinating interests about values. The author gives an assessment of the norms of law as the norms of differentiation and coordination of relations regarding values. The article analyzes what is the driving principle of law: the convergence of state values and human values. The author believes that any attempts to assign priority to certain values without taking into account their real correlation in society are doomed to failure in advance. The attitude of a person to the law is the defining embodiment of legal values as the socio-cultural basis of law. The law regulates the procedure for the realization of interests in relation to values. For a wide range of readers interested in legal issues. It will be useful for students, postgraduates and teachers of law schools.

Yurasov, Igor', and Ol'ga Pavlova. Discursive study of Orthodox religious identity. ru: INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/1021279.

Full text
Abstract:
Considers the problem of the Orthodox religious identity from the point of view of the influence of five types of discourse, widely represented in the Orthodox semiotic picture of the world: philosophical, mythological, artistic, political and ideological. Selected types of religious identity: normative, marginalized, and folkloristically, and determined what type of discourse most pragmatically strongly influences the formation of a type of Orthodox identity. The authors come to the conclusion about the existence in the Russian Federation "rural" and "urban" Orthodox discourses. The first leads to the development of social strain in the area of religious identity and is the base of the formation polarisierung religious identity. The second sets the normative Orthodox identity, avoiding archaism and development of the centaur-ideas. This study was conducted in part supported by RFBR, research project No. 18-011-00164 on "Discursive study of religious identity." Designed for a wide range of sociologists, philologists, cultural studies and religious studies, as well as for a wide circle of readers interested in questions of religion.

Tihomirova, Ol'ga. Transaction management: gamification of managing companies and people. ru: INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/1072211.

Full text
Abstract:
The science and practice of management are presented from a completely new, original author's point of view — as a social action of managers who implement given social roles. In existing theories over the past 100 years, management has been considered as a set of functions, as a process, as a talent, but not as a social action that is carried out by a specific person representing a specific social stratum — managers. Sometimes the theory is too boring and difficult to understand and implement them in practice in the management of specific companies. In this book, the author presents the theory of management as an exciting game that is played not only by managers, but also by staff, consumers, and competitors… In each section, the reader is offered training tasks aimed at developing practical management skills. It will be of interest to entrepreneurs, managers, managers, undergraduate and graduate students studying in the field of "Management", "Economics", "innovation", as well as a wide range of readers interested in management and personal development.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter investigates change-point (hazard rate) probability models for the random survival time in some population of interest. A parametric probability distribution is assumed with parameters to be estimated from a sample of observed survival times. If a change-point parameter, denoted by τ‎, is included to represent the time at which there is a discrete change in hazard rate, then the model is non-standard. The profile log-likelihood, with τ‎ as profiling parameter, has a discontinuous jump at every τ‎ equal to a sampled value, becoming unbounded as τ‎ tends to the largest observation. It is known that maximum likelihood estimation can still be used provided the range of τ‎ is restricted. It is shown that the alternative maximum product of spacings method is consistent without restriction on τ‎. Censored observations which commonly occur in survival-time data can be accounted for using Kaplan-Meier estimation. A real data numerical example is given.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter describes the three-gender system of Latin, with a particular focus on the neuter gender: unlike the masculine and feminine, this was not only assigned to nouns as an inherent feature, and used to specify words from other word classes agreeing with those nouns, but it also served default functions in a range of contexts. Arguably, this property was inherited from (late) Proto-Indo-European, as was the three-way gender system itself, in which the neuter seems to have contrasted with masculine/feminine in terms of (in)animacy. Simplification of the gender system in most of Romance is placed in the broader Indo-European perspective, showing that in most branches the gender contrasts have reduced via a drift that reaches its endpoint in the eradication of grammatical gender in, for example Armenian or Farsi. Within this picture, some Romance dialects apparently deviate, showing complexification rather than simplification of the gender system.

Abstract:
This chapter attributes an inertial ‘mass–energy’ to particles. It also distinguishes between the action of an external field and of long-range and short-range internal forces, which is useful for establishing the laws of dynamics of an interacting body—that is, the equations determining its world line. The chapter also presents the 4-momentum conservation law for massive particles and light particles in inertial reference frames. It then gives some examples which illustrate the role played by this law in collisions. Finally, the chapter illustrates the conservation law by the Compton experiment, that is, the collision of a light corpuscle with a particle, and the concept of the quantum of action that can be derived from it.

Shephard OAM, Mark, ed. Practical Guide to Global Point-of-Care Testing. CSIRO Publishing, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9781486305193.

Full text
Abstract:
Point-of-care testing (POCT) refers to pathology testing performed in a clinical setting at the time of patient consultation, generating a rapid test result that enables informed and timely clinical action to be taken on patient care. It offers patients greater convenience and access to health services and helps to improve clinical outcomes. POCT also provides innovative solutions for the detection and management of chronic, acute and infectious diseases, in settings including family practices, Indigenous medical services, community health facilities, rural and remote areas and in developing countries, where health-care services are often geographically isolated from the nearest pathology laboratory. A Practical Guide to Global Point-of-Care Testing shows health professionals how to set up and manage POCT services under a quality-assured, sustainable, clinically and culturally effective framework, as well as understand the wide global scope and clinical applications of POCT. The book is divided into three major themes: the management of POCT services, a global perspective on the clinical use of POCT, and POCT for specific clinical settings. Chapters within each theme are written by experts and explore wide-ranging topics such as selecting and evaluating devices, POCT for diabetes, coagulation disorders, HIV, malaria and Ebola, and the use of POCT for disaster management and in extreme environments. Figures are included throughout to illustrate the concepts, principles and practice of POCT. Written for a broad range of practicing health professionals from the fields of medical science, health science, nursing, medicine, paramedic science, Indigenous health, public health, pharmacy, aged care and sports medicine, A Practical Guide to Global Point-of-Care Testing will also benefit university students studying these health-related disciplines.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter queries the widely prevalent distinction between input- and output-related sources of legitimacy in global governance. Instead, it suggests a typology of sources which builds on a related but analytically sharper distinction of procedure and performance. Moreover, the chapter emphasizes that legitimacy perceptions derive from democratic, technocratic, and fairness qualities of procedure and performance. The chapter thus arrives at a novel typology whereby the sources of legitimacy for global governance institutions can be classified in terms of democratic procedure, technocratic procedure, fair procedure, democratic performance, technocratic performance, and fair performance. The chapter further illustrates a range of indicators for these sources and considers how these bases of legitimacy may vary across types of global governance institutions, countries, societal groups, and time. The result is a wider, tighter, and more systematic understanding of the institutional grounds for perceptions of global governance legitimacy.

Abstract:
Another novelist provides in some respects a point in between Chariton and Heliodorus. His elaborate expatiation on tears and the lover put rhythm at the service of an intricate treatment of the mind and body, and a shrewd depiction of amorous self-control and manipulation. The first-person narrative adds a further stratum of sophistication to this handling of the speaker’s rival and enemy. Achilles Tatius demonstrates further, in contrast with Chariton, the range of possibilities for the exploitation of rhythm seen already in the difference of Chariton and Plutarch. Comparison with Heliodorus brings out Achilles’ elegance.

Full text
Abstract:
This book challenges conventional wisdoms both about economic performance and about policies for economic development in African countries. Its starting point is the striking variation in economic performance: unevenness and inequalities form a central fact. The authors highlight not only differences between African countries but also variations within countries, differences often organized around distinctions of gender, class, and ethnic identity. For example, school dropout and neonatal mortality have been reduced, particularly for some classes of women in some areas. Horticultural and agribusiness exports have grown far more rapidly in some countries than others. These variations (and many others) point to opportunities for changing performance, reducing inequalities, learning from other African policy experiences, and escaping the ties of structure and legacies of a colonial past. The book rejects teleological illusions and Eurocentric prejudice, but does pay close attention to the results of policy in more industrialized parts of the world. Seeing the contradictions of capitalism for what they are—fundamental and enduring—may help policy officials protect themselves against the misleading idea that development is likely to be a smooth, linear process, or that it would be were certain impediments removed. The authors criticize a wide range of orthodox and heterodox economists, especially for their cavalier attitude to statistical sources. Drawing on decades of research and policy experience, they combine careful use of available evidence from a range of African countries with heterodox political economy insights (mainly derived from Kalecki, Kaldor, and Hirschman) to make the policy case for specific types of public sector investment.

Abstract:
Despite the apparent wealth of information that exists on agricultural buildings and the implements used to help cultivate the land and manage the livestock, there is still great potential for future research. The assemblage of agricultural equipment and buildings, which survive above ground in large numbers especially in England, is well known and lends itself to fresh approaches founded on landscape analysis. This chapter introduces readers to the range of material and the approaches to its study in the past, and suggests new ways of considering the material by combining archaeological analysis with a knowledge of contemporary written sources. The chapter highlights the grain barn as a case in point.

Despite the development of entirely new classes of anticoagulant medication, vitamin K antagonists like warfarin continue to be commonly prescribed for a wide range of cardiovascular diagnoses. Conversely, the advent of low molecular weight heparin has greatly simplified the use of the drug to the point that patients can dose themselves at home with no need for any type of monitoring. Given the widespread use of these medications, it is not surprising that an increasing number of patients requiring urgent or emergent surgery will present with a medically induced coagulopathy. Managing this coagulopathy requires assessment of the urgency of the operation, the patient’s volume status, and the need for reanticoagulation following surgical intervention.

This chapter explores the operational legacy of the Falklands War through the lens of organizational and operational innovations. It takes Freedman’s official history of the conflict, and its assessment of the legacy of the conflict, as the point of departure. Based on the premise that the conflict was the first British naval operation in decades, it identifies a range of innovations – the establishment of a war cabinet, the appointment of an overall in-theatre commander, the requirement for an amphibious capability amongst them – that can be linked to the success of the Falklands campaign. But, the legacy of the Falklands has been lost. However, very little of the operational legacy of the Falklands War remains.

Abstract:
This article describes quasi-ballistic electron transport in atomic wires. It begins with a review of experiments on the conduction properties for single metal atoms. Nearly all the information on the properties of such nanocontacts should be extracted from the current and voltage only. Nevertheless, a wide range of techniques has been developed to obtain detailed information. The article proceeds by considering various experimental techniques for characterizing single-atom contacts, along with their application for the study of conducting chains of individual metal atoms and for metal–molecule–metal junctions. Using metallic point contacts and molecular junctions that are of atomic size, it demonstrates that the transport of electrons can be quasi-ballistic and the deviations from perfect transmission can be quantified and interpreted.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the book The University of Oxford. A History (2016), by Laurence W. B. Brockliss. The book is divided into four parts: the ‘Catholic University’ (c.1100–1534), the ‘Anglican University’ (1534–1845), the ‘Imperial University’ (1845–1945), and the ‘World University’ (1945–2015). Brockliss’s account broadly endorses the idea that the 400 years or so between the high middle ages and the Victorian era of reform were a time of decline for Oxford, reaching the lowest point under the Hanoverians. Yet this interpretation has been seriously questioned by others, including Lucy Sutherland and Leslie Mitchell. The book tackles a range of topics related to Oxford, including its undergraduate curriculum, student population, research, funding, and institutional obstacles to reform.

Full text
Abstract:
Until the 1970s all materials studied consisted of periodic arrays of unit cells, or were amorphous. In the following decades a new class of solid state matter, called aperiodic crystals, has been found. It is a long-range ordered structure, but without lattice periodicity. It is found in a wide range of materials: organic and inorganic compounds, minerals (including a substantial portion of the earth’s crust), and metallic alloys, under various pressures and temperatures. Because of the lack of periodicity the usual techniques for the study of structure and physical properties no longer work, and new techniques have to be developed. This book deals with the characterization of the structure, the structure determination, and the study of the physical properties, especially the dynamical and electronic properties of aperiodic crystals. The treatment is based on a description in a space with more dimensions than three, the so-called superspace. This allows us to generalize the standard crystallography and to look differently at the dynamics. The three main classes of aperiodic crystals, modulated phases, incommensurate composites, and quasicrystals are treated from a unified point of view which stresses the similarities of the various systems. The book assumes as a prerequisite a knowledge of the fundamental techniques of crystallography and the theory of condensed matter, and covers the literature at the forefront of the field.

Full text
Abstract:
Contemporary work on ontology, logic, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of language still owes much to W.V. Quine. Nevertheless his views are now often dismissed because of mistaken or overly simplified conceptions of his philosophy. The development of his views over time are often overlooked, and in particular the growing importance of a kind of structuralism to his system as it evolved. This volume provides a fuller, richer picture of Quine’s views and their development. It is the first to investigate Quine’s views on structure and how it permeates and shapes his attitude to a range of philosophical questions. It includes contributions by world-famous philosophers and experts in a range of subfields including philosophical logic, philosophy of language, history of philosophy, mathematics, philosophy of time, and set theory. Chapters by Michael Resnik, Frederique Janssen-Lauret and Fraser MacBride, John Collins, Jaroslav Peregrin, and Paul Gregory explore whether Quine’s structuralism is epistemological, language-based, or ontological. Greg Frost-Arnold, Robert Sinclair, and Gary Kemp and Andrew Lugg explore Quine’s views on structure from a historical point of view. Nathan Salmón, Gila Sher, Marianna Antonutti Marfori, and Natalja Deng consider Quine’s views on the structure of logic, language, and theories in relation to contemporary philosophy, specifically ontology, the philosophy of logic and mathematics, philosophy of set theory, and philosophy of time.

Abstract:
ISIS Propaganda offers a comprehensive overview and analysis of the Islamic State’s (IS) propaganda. Combining a range of different theoretical perspectives from across the social sciences and using rigorous methods, the authors pursue several interconnected tasks. They trace the origins of IS’s message, they lay bare the strategic logic guiding its evolution, they examine each of its many components (magazines, videos, music, social media, etc.) and show how they work together to radicalize audiences’ worldviews, and they highlight the challenges such a “full-spectrum propaganda” raises in terms of counterterrorism. The volume hence not only represents a one-stop point for any analyst of IS and Salafi-jihadism, but also a rich contribution to the study of text and visual propaganda, radicalization and political violence, and international security.

West, Gerald. Global Thefts of Biblical Narrative. Edited by Danna Nolan Fewell. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199967728.013.50.

Abstract:
This chapter takes its starting point from the African experience, across a range of African contexts, of Africa as both the subject and object of biblical narrative. When the Bible came to Africa, it came with well-established colonial metanarratives, constructed in part from biblical narratives. These colonial metanarratives were in turn partly reconstructed by the engagement with African others, from both a European and an African perspective along two diverging trajectories, with biblical narrative making a contribution to both. This chapter focuses on the capacity of biblical narrative, biblical story, to be both incorporated into “local” metanarratives and to shape these metanarratives. The contexts that are the focus of this chapter are largely “third world” contexts, across which there are significant family resemblances and important contextual differences.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses a wide range of issues concerning how far text and intentions should figure in judicial interpretation of legal standards and what should constitute the relevant understanding of a text and the intentions of those who enact it. The chapter makes two fundamental points. The first is that intrinsically what a communications means is closely interrelated to the perceived intentions of those who make it. Any plausible argument for disregarding intentions must rest on claimed specific obstacles, not ordinary understandings. The second basic point is that how to understand text and intentions is sometimes simple, but when it comes to debatable situations each can be complicated and controversial. The chapter also looks at the practice of judicial deference to the interpretations of others and whether that is appropriate.

Law, David R. The Historical–Critical Method. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9780567701251.

Full text
Abstract:
Historical Critical Analysis is the main way in which the Bible (both the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament and the New Testament) has been examined and read by scholars in the last century. The term refers to a range of methodologies which examine the origins of biblical texts, in relation to other contemporaneous texts, to form critical approaches and to questions of authorship, audience and authenticty. The aim is to get as close to the ‘original text’ and its ‘original meaning’ as possible. For many years Historical Critical Method has been the cornerstone upon which biblical scholarship is built, even as modern studies examine other theoretical approaches to reading the text in history, tradition, and from different audience perspectives the Historical Critical Method still presents the crucial starting point for students and scholars.

Albarella, Umberto, Mauro Rizzetto, Hannah Russ, Kim Vickers, and Sarah Viner-Daniels, eds. The Oxford Handbook of Zooarchaeology. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199686476.001.0001.

Abstract:
This book presents a survey of world archaeology, from the point of view of animal remain studies. It can be considered as a showcase for world zooarchaeology. Forty-eight chapters written by researchers from twenty-five countries discuss archaeological investigations in five different continents. The geographic range covers the Arctic as well as the Tropics, islands and continental land masses, marine shores, forests, hills, and mountains. Human interactions with many different creatures—ranging from mammals to birds, fishes, and molluscs—are discussed, and in a great variety of ecological and cultural contexts. Methodological approaches are also diverse, as they are chosen according to the themes and research questions discussed in individual chapters. The full range of zooarchaeological methods is on display, but also integration with evidence deriving from sister disciplines, such as history, ethnography, zoology, palaeontology, and biochemistry. A methodological glossary helps the reader, particularly the non-specialist, to get a grasp of the multitude of methodological approaches presented in the book. Most aspects of human–animal relationships—from hunting to husbandry, herding, and fishing, as well as the use of animals in ritual and social contexts—are discussed in one or more chapters, also covering all the greatest human civilizations. As a whole, these investigations authoritatively show the essential role that animals have played in human history. The book is the result of an ambitious project, never previously attempted at such scale; it aims to affirm the centrality of zooarchaeology in our investigation of past humanities.

Pritchard, Gareth. Power Relations during the Transition from Nazi to Post-Nazi Rule. Edited by Nicholas Doumanis. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199695669.013.35.

Abstract:
Europe’s mid-century crisis of the 1940s destabilized power relations due to the simultaneous expansion and erosion of state power relative to society. This in turn unleashed a process of paramilitarization that eroded the state’s monopoly over the use of force. Ferocious struggles for power broke out at a local level between a wide range of gangs and armed bands. Paramilitarization reached a high point during the chaotic transitional period between Nazi and post-Nazi rule when the day-to-day authority of the state broke down almost completely. In order to gain an advantage over their rivals, actors on the ground established client–patron relationships with one or other of the great powers. Local struggles in Europe thereby became internationalized, which in turn contributed significantly both to the course of the Second World War and to the outbreak of the Cold War.

Doolin, Bill. Implementing E-Health. Edited by Ewan Ferlie, Kathleen Montgomery, and Anne Reff Pedersen. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198705109.013.19.

Abstract:
The application of information and communication technology to support health care organization, management, and delivery is high on the health policy agenda in many countries, and its implementation has become a significant issue. Despite optimistic expectations and increasing investment in e-health, the anticipated benefits are often elusive. This chapter reviews the factors driving the development of e-health before introducing a conceptualization of e-health focused on the management and use of health care information at the point of care, between health care providers and, ultimately, by health care consumers. The chapter then explores a range of issues that render e-health implementation problematic. In particular, implementing e-health is both a complex and emergent process that requires consideration of local health care contexts, and a socio-technical problem involving changes in work processes, interactions, and behaviors.

Morozov, Alexei. Non-Hermitian ensembles. Edited by Gernot Akemann, Jinho Baik, and Philippe Di Francesco. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198744191.013.18.

Abstract:
This article discusses the three-fold family of Ginibre random matrix ensembles (complex, real, and quaternion real) and their elliptic deformations. It also considers eigenvalue correlations that are exactly reduced to two-point kernels in the strongly and weakly non-Hermitian limits of large matrix size. Ginibre introduced the complex, real, and quaternion real random matrix ensembles as a mathematical extension of Hermitian random matrix theory. Statistics of complex eigenvalues are now used in modelling a wide range of physical phenomena. After providing an overview of the complex Ginibre ensemble, the article describes random contractions and the complex elliptic ensemble. It then examines real and quaternion-real Ginibre ensembles, along with real and quaternion-real elliptic ensembles. In particular, it analyses the kernel in the elliptic case as well as the limits of strong and weak non-Hermiticity.
