The author of the thesis has focused on the mistranslations pointed out in a thesis, entitled with A Study of Howard Goldblatt’s “Mistranslation”, specifically on “seven sisters”. The paper has discussed and defended it from four dimensions. First, semantically speaking, it is spiritual similarity instead of formal one to the original, for it has conveyed the connotative and associative meanings hidden in the original. Second, based on cognitive translation studies, it has embodied the cognitive experience as what the original has done. Third, from cognitive psychology, it is the best representation which language central nerve stimulates the translator to select and match with the original in information processing and communication. Finally, functionally speaking, it is more equivalent to the original than other translations. Therefore, the author holds that “seven sisters” translated by Howard Goldblatt is no mistranslation of “六(liù)个(gè)姐(jiě)姐(jiě)”.

Cuando ocurren incendios en Plantas industriales, los materiales siniestrados y el humo dificultan la identificación del personal. Los Drones con sensores laser y redes CNN posibilitan el reconocimiento de personas en tales ambientes. El objetivo del proyecto es el estudio de un sistema neuronal convolucional para el reconocimiento de personas en un ambiente con emisiones de humo (parte1) y para su implementación usa un sensor laser, una tarjeta controladora y un dron (parte2). El método empleado consideró la realización de un reconocimiento de personas usando una red CNN previamente entrenada con nube de puntos 3D. La prueba se realizó con Alexnet e imágenes de personas. Los resultados (parte1) muestran que una matriz de confusión del 97.5 % ha sido alcanzada. Basado en el estudio, se concluye que el sistema neuronal de reconocimiento de personas usando CNN en ambientes siniestrados presenta un comportamiento muy aceptable para su aplicabilidad. The Polish version of the article was published in Roczniki Humanistyczne vol. 65, issue 4 (2017).
The article focuses on Ernestyna Śniadowiczówna, the main character in a novel by Zofia Nałkowska, Węże i róże [Snakes and Roses] (1913). The main purpose of the work is to show that the character had its real counterpart in Zofia’s younger sister, the sculptor Hanna Nałkowska. The words of Zofia herself were crucial, who in her Diary confessed that all her novels were autobiographical to some extent. Still, researchers have not paid sufficient attention to the significant similarities between Ernestyna and Hanna Nałkowska. Węże i róże is the only piece in the writer’s output in which she analyzed the issues related to art and pointed out some characteristics of the artist. Zofia was writing her novel when Hanna was entering the world of art. A comparison between Ernestyna Śniadowiczówna and Hanna Nałkowska, as well as the information from Zofia’s Dziennik and reminiscences of their friends show that the literary character is likely to be based on a real person.

Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie (1900) suffered sharp criticism at the very moment of their appearance. Most critics and readers pointed out he depicted something amoral, especially on sexual amorality. Yet, with the development of feminism, a few years later Sister Carrie was appraised as the model of ‘new woman’ of the late 19th century. In the light of Freudian thought, the paper will not only draw attention to the confrontation between desire and morality but also to the effects of human inner mind in the external world in attempt to explore the permanent factors that influence human’s actions.

The overlapping of imperative and dispositional judicial regulation means as an expression of compromises and (or) noncompromises in a social system is dealt with in this article, using understanding of law as on of social norms systems, undergoing confrontation, conflicts or seeking compromises. On the basis of examples of the Lithuanian law of the present day the invasion of both regulation methods into public and private law, not regulated tradicionally by them, is pointed; the problem of the lack of argumentation of linked to potentiol threat to the balance of the judicial system is ruised.

In the article, the author explains the foundation and the constitutional regulation of the Latvian Constitutional Court marking its place within the principle of the separation of powers. The appointment of the justices and some novelties along with problems encountered in the justice selection procedure is provided in other chapter of the article. By describing the competence of the Constitutional Court, it is pointed out that it is very narrow as the Constitutional Court adjudicates only cases about conformity of legal enactments with the norms of higher hierarchy. The author analyses also the circle of persons who can stand before the Court. Special emphasis is given to the constitutional complaint - a petition which can be submitted to the Constitutional Court by an individual and which marks also dialogue between the Latvian Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights. At the end, the author explains the legal force and real influence of judgments of the Constitutional Court, including rights of the Constitutional Court to determine a point in time when the anticonstitutional regulation becomes null and void. The author concludes that the Constitutional Court not only theoretically, but also in reality ensures a system for the constitutional order and values, as well as principles in the Republic of Latvia.

In general, when beginning to explore any scientific field, one focuses on the generic situations; that is, one centers on the behaviours that appear in “most” of the cases encountered in practice.
This methodology allows an easier understanding of the problem, since the non-generic (or degenerate) cases are left out (at least a priori) in a first approach. This way, the casuistic is simpler and the general theory can be developed more easily. Although this is a good scientific procedure, the aim of Science is to explain reality in the most complete way possible. So, when the general case has been already described (perhaps not completely, but at least in a good part), one should study the non-generic cases: the exceptions. It should not be forgotten that, in nature, not all the processes follow a general rule. The exceptional cases often provide new types of behaviour. Therefore, a lot can be learned from the exceptions, as much at an intrinsic level (situations that differ from the general qualitative behaviour) as for the new techniques that are developed in order to understand them.
In certain contexts, it is generic to encounter degenerate cases. Let us think, for instance, about the case of parametric families, f(mi), which describe different behaviours depending on the value of mi. In this situation, it is generic (that is, it occurs in most of the families) to find values of the parameter f(mi)(0) for which the behaviour of f(mi)(0) is degenerate.

Um sistema dessa natureza, denominado SAG (Sistema de Apoio Gerencial), foi concebido para dar suporte às atividades de gerência, supervisão e controle da rede de distribuição de energia elétrica da Eletropaulo Metropolitana (São Paulo, Brasil). O SAG possibilita o estabelecimento de uma sistemática de supervisão, visando, a partir da análise das condições atuais da rede de distribuição e em função dos recursos disponíveis, permitir o acompanhamento da evolução da qualidade do fornecimento de energia elétrica. Disponibilizando informações que irão orientar ações para corrigir os possíveis desvios inadequados e fixar políticas e diretrizes a serem seguidas nos níveis gerenciais. Como resultado, é esperado tornar mais ágil o processo decisório, bem como o acesso a dados técnicos e de carregamento dos equipamentos da rede de distribuição.In this dissertation are discussed the advantages and difficulties of an Executive Information System (EIS) implementation on an Intranet or Internet environment, as well as the use of Database applications on the web. An Executive Information System named SAG was implemented at Eletropaulo Metropolitana (São Paulo, Brazil); it was conceived to address maintenance, operational and engineering departments\' needs. The System allows the establishment of a systematic supervision to attend the quality of the electric energy supplied. The analysis of the actual distribution network conditions, the available resources and the electric energy supplied quality will guide the actions to correct possible inadequacies as well as set and fix policies and guidelines to be followed on a manager\'s level. As a result it\'s expected faster decision-making process and access on distribution network equipment\'s technical data and load.

This paper shows a study about the main management systems currently applied by the Brazilian companies, presenting particular features and some common aspects which allow the integration of the ISO 9001, National Prize of Quality and Strategic Planning. Thus, a gathering system of management has been idealized and developed around the strategic control originated by the pointers intersection and optimized by the Balanced Scorecard selected by a service rendered company on management technologies according to the necessities originated by such systems demands and by the own directory of the organization. The study, however, does not aim at presenting the whole documentation generated and applied by the company on the construction of the gathering system, but the tools built for that and the pointers matrix belonging to the center of the study. The results achieved showed to be effective for the obtaining a multifunctional system composed by 45 pointers, and of small associated documentation, versatility on the new systems gathering, superior performances to the established aim, besides multiple external conquests such as the Prêmio Qualidade RS (Silver Trophy category), and the ISO 9001 certification. Starting from that, we expect other organizations develop their management systems based on the measurement system, motivated by the simple method developed in this work and of great outcome in order to better administrate their business and also to enlarge the resources invested in their administrationEste trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre os principais sistemas de gestão utilizados pelas empresas brasileiras, na atualidade, apresentando características individuais e alguns aspectos comuns, que possibilitaram a integração da ISO 9001, Prêmio Nacional da Qualidade e Planejamento Estratégico. Para tanto, um Sistema Integrado de Gestão foi planejado e desenvolvido, em torno do controle estratégico originado pela interseção de indicadores e otimizado pelo Balanced Scorecard, selecionados por uma empresa prestadora de serviços em tecnologias de gestão, em função das necessidades originadas pelas demandas de tais sistemas e pela própria direção da organização. O trabalho, porém, não visa a apresentação integral da documentação gerada e utilizada pela empresa, na construção do sistema integrado, mas as ferramentas elaboradas, para tanto, e a matriz de indicadores, que está no centro do estudo. Os resultados alcançados monstraram-se efetivos pela obtenção de um sistema multifuncional, composto de 45 indicadores e de pequena documentação associada, versatilidade para integração de novos sistemas, desempenhos acima das metas estabelecidas e múltiplas conquistas externas, tais como o Prêmio Qualidade RS (modalidade Troféu Prata) e a certificação ISO 9001. Os sistemas térmicos operam na maior parte do tempo fora de suas condições nominais de projeto. Nos sistemas de refrigeração industrial, a operação com carga térmica parcial ocorre em função de diversos fatores e o consumo de energia apresenta grande variação em função do ciclo de operação. Neste trabalho é proposta a otimização energética dos sistemas frigoríficos por compressão a vapor através da operação com regime variável para o ciclo frigorífico, especificamente através da operação com set-point de temperatura de evaporação variável. Para tanto é desenvolvido um modelo matemático para simulação dinâmica de um sistema de refrigeração industrial por compressão a vapor com refrigerante amônia (R-717) para o congelamento de alimentos composto basicamente de túnel de congelamento por circulação forçada de ar, evaporador com recirculação de líquido, reservatório de líquido a baixa pressão, compressores parafuso e condensador evaporativo atmosférico. São analisados através de simulação dois métodos para a variação do setpoint de temperatura de evaporação: a máxima temperatura de evaporação admissível e a minimização da potência no compressor. Os dois métodos são comparados ao sistema de controle de capacidade atualmente utilizado em instalações industriais.Thermal systems operate most of the time at off-design conditions. In industrial refrigeration systems, the operation in partial loads occurs for many different reasons and the power consumption is a function of the refrigeration cycle pressures. This work proposes an energetic optimization of the compression refrigeration systems by the operation with a variable refrigeration cycle, specifically, by the operation with a variable suction temperature set-point. For this purpose it is developed a mathematical model for dynamic simulation of a industrial refrigeration compression system for food freezing with ammonia refrigerant (R717) formed by an air blast belt freezer, liquid overfeed evaporators, low pressure receiver, screw compressors and evaporative condenser. Two procedures for the suction temperature set-point variation are analyzed by simulation: the maximum suction temperature permitted and the compressor power consumption minimization. Both methods are compared with the capacity control system used in present industrial facilities.

Šio darbo objektas – išmaniųjų telefonų pastovaus ryšio išlaikymas tarp WiFi adapterių. Dabartiniu momentu yra sukurta daug prieigos taškų paieškos sistemų, tačiau šios sistemos „nemoka“ automatiškai susirasti bei prisijungti prie tinkamiausio prieigos taško. Taip pat egzistuojančios sistemos ieškodamos prieigos taškų išeikvoja daug išmaniojo telefono energetinių resursų. Darbe įvardijami pagrindiniai egzistuojančių sistemų trūkumai ir analizuojamos tobulinimo galimybės panaudojant miglotąją logiką.
Pirmojoje darbo dalyje aprašoma tyrimo sritis, objektas bei remiantis literatūros analize atskleidžiamas, per esamas bevielio interneto prieigos taškų paieškos sistemų problemas, temos aktualumas.
Antroji dalis apima komponentų projektavimą bei programavimą. Projektavimui naudojama UML, Visio ir FuzzyTech įrankiai. Šioje dalyje yra pavaizduotos komponentų klasių, įvykių bei sekų diagramos, pateikta duomenų bazės schema bei miglotųjų įverčių diagramos. Šioje darbo dalyje yra sukuriama ir pati bevielio interneto prieigos taškų valdymo sistema „HandyWi“.
Trečioje darbo dalyje pateikti naujai sukurtos „HandyWi“ sistemos kokybinių tyrimo duomenų palyginimo rezultatai. Pagrysta sukurtos sistemos reikšmė informacinių technologijų srityje.
Paskutinėje darbo dalyje pateikta apibendrinta informacija apie sukurtą bevielio interneto prieigos taškų paieškos sistemos funkcionalumą ir išskirtinumą bei tolimesnes jos plėtojimo galimybes.

There are many created access points discovery systems at the moment, but those systems “don’t know” how to discovery and connect to suitable access point. Also existing systems have lost a lot of smart phone battery energy during discovering access points. The main existing systems issues and issues solving abilities by using fuzzy logic are presented at this work. The subject of research, object and subject relevance were detectable through literature analysis and through existing access point discovery systems issues are presented in the first part. The subject of research and object are presented in the first part of this work. Also, subject relevance is presented pursuant to literature analyze of wireless internet access point discovery system. Object components design and programming process are presented in the second part. UML, Visio and Fuzzytech programs are used for designing components. Events, sequence and class diagrams are viewed in this part, also this part contain database schema and fuzzy sets diagrams. The main wireless internet discovery system is created in this part. The system is called “HandyWi”. The “HandyWi” system is comparison with existing system and quality data results are stored in the third part. Atualmente, este contexto encontra-se sistematicamente a adaptar-se e a desenvolver-se face aos diferentes condicionalismos sendo também alvo da preocupação dos clientes das empresas. Neste sentido, pretende-se estudar o que está na base de uma corporação empresarial líder num mercado em território nacional, em desenvolver parcerias no âmbito da solidariedade social. A Portugal Telecom, como a maior sociedade empresarial portuguesa no ramo das comunicações, apresenta várias medidas no campo da responsabilidade social, tanto ao nível do desenvolvimento sustentável e económico como também com a criação de programas que tenham em conta apenas os aspetos sociais. De forma a contextualizar este desenvolvimento, procura-se perceber como funciona o grupo PT em geral, incluindo a empresa de telecomunicações móveis nacionais, a TMN, para conjugar os fatores Fundação PT e programa ponto t e de que forma estes influenciam os aspetos sociais. Da mesma forma teve-se de proceder ao levantamento de algumas definições de responsabilidade social empresarial (RSE) para uma melhor ligação entre quadro empresarial da PT e compreensão das razões do programa de pontos da TMN bem como o modo de funcionamento da Fundação PT no campo do voluntariado. Corporate social responsibility has increased its interest from large business corporations to the smallest companies. Currently, this context is systematically adapting and developing because different constraints such as laws, cultures, and also business customers concerning. Such as, we intend to study what are the sources of a business corporation in a market leader in Portugal, by developing partnerships within of social solidarity framework. Portugal Telecom, as the largest Portuguese company in the business of communications, has several measures on social responsibility field, both in terms of sustainable development and economic as well as the creation of programs, that concerns only to social aspects. In order to contextualize this development, we seek to understand how group PT , including the national mobile telecommunications company, TMN, and then to combine factors such as PT Foundation and program t point and, how they influence the social aspects. Likewise, we proceed to some survey of corporate social responsibility (CSR) definitions for a better link between PT business environment and the TMN?s reasons points program and the operating mode of the PT Foundation on the field of volunteering. Research questions are asked with regard to points exchange, specifically for donations, proved that they are related to population?s demographic aspects as well as volunteer programs carried out so far.

AbstractQuestions of power and ethics were implicitly present in the previous chapters. In this chapter, I deal with them in more detail, examining the power struggles in the classroom in terms of the relationship between the student and the lecturer as well as that between students. I also discuss ways out of the struggle, including a reflective attitude, classroom practices and considerations of spatial arrangements. Further, recognition, generosity and care are suggested as possible ways to overcome the difficult ethical situations in learning and teaching philosophy. In this context, I discuss the Oslo Summer School, where care ethics was used as the theoretical point of departure.

Pandemic, health crisis, climate risk after decades of stressing natural capital because of overexploitation of resources and moreover increasing socio-economic inequalities are considered by many scholar to cause a tipping point in the evolution of bio-physical and socio-technical processes on a global level. In light of the systemic interdependencies of a hyper-connected world, the scenario of a global systemic crisis does not appear unlikely. We can try to avoid it by taking on new strategic priorities and mindset, then defining theoretical imperatives and application criteria. In this perspective, an example is the paradigm shift represented by the passage from the so-called shareholder capitalism to the stakeholder capitalism.

Abstract This concluding chapter outlines several key points about the relationship between gender, climate change, and livelihood that have been highlighted by the contributions in this book. First, climate change is a gender issue. Second, the gender implications of climate change are not universal; different social, cultural, and ecological contexts can require distinct diagnoses and prescriptions. Third, climate change generates a broad range of direct and indirect outcomes for women and their livelihoods. Fourth, for governments, a laissez-faire approach to dealing with the gender dimensions of climate change is not only insufficient, it is counterproductive. Fifth, while governments must be active in their approach to mitigating climate vulnerabilities and fostering adaptations, the content, design, and implementation of public policy is important. Finally, women have agency and are using it, as grassroots organizers and activists, and as mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, and community members fighting for their lives and livelihoods. The chapter also discusses the book's themes in light of the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic; and provides some directions and ideas for future research.

Between the 14th and 15th centuries, a dense network of trade relations was active in the maritime basin of the western Mediterranean. The three regional areas that overlooked this sea, the Iberian and Provencal, the Italian and the African, and all the islands that were present in it, were equipped with numerous and important landing points and were connected by a dense network of exchanges. The essay takes into consideration the characteristics of this network of economic and cultural connections, and analyzes, particularly through the use of the Datini Archive, the role of the port of Rome in this system of exchanges and the links that merchants and bankers who acted in this city entertained with the Iberian mercantile centers.

This chapter describes the Trinity Washington University/CARA (Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate) study of international sisters. By definition, an international sister is a Catholic sister who was born outside the United States and currently works, studies, or resides in the United States. The study located over 4,000 international sisters from 83 countries on six continents living in the United States at the present time. Quantitative and qualitative data describe the demographics of the international sisters, their pathways to the United States, their satisfactions, concerns, challenges, and contributions. The story of the international sisters is embedded in the wider historical and contemporary narratives of immigration to the United States. Archival data on the lives of two international sisters in the United States a century ago illustrate the historical dimension of the narrative, and recent quantitative data on global migration patterns point to the broader significance of this study.

This chapter focuses on Le An as she joined an artistic troupe that performed for military units and youth groups during the war and spent over two decades living in northern Vietnam with the military. It mentions Le An and her troupe's crossing of the border and performance in southern Laos in 1971. It also details how Le An survived a period at the Seventeenth Parallel that was punctuated by the heavy bombing of Binh Dinh and Quang Binh Provinces. The chapter recounts Le An's return to southern Vietnam to reunite with her husband, who served in the army in North Vietnam. It mentions Tuyen's brother, Luu Huu Phoc, who composed the song “Len Dang”, which became known as the march of the students that spurred them to join the maquis in order to expel the French. O artigo descreve o processo de reavaliação e esmeração de um sistema de produção da microempresa de semijoias Cantrelle Design, com o objetivo de otimizar a estrutura organizacional e de produção por meio do design de sistemas e o slow fashion. O design de sistemas por considerar o produto como um conjunto inteiro, e o slow fashion, porque visa a democratização do processo de criação de peças de forma mais lenta, preocupando-se com o desenvolvimento dos processos. Para alcançar um resultado satisfatório, utilizou-se a metodologia desenvolvida por Ezio Manzini e Carlo Vezzoli, o Life Cycle Design (LCD), procurando reduzir os inputs e outputs o máximo possível, tanto em termos quantitativos quanto qualitativos. Ponderando assim, a nocividade de seus efeitos, por meio da avaliação de todas as fases do produto, que são subdivididas em pré-produção, produção, distribuição, uso e descarte. Por se tratar de semijoias, sendo, então, um bem durável, requere-se poucos recursos durante o uso e manutenção, concentra-se em reduzir o impacto nas fases antecedentes e posteriores ao uso. Como resultado, obteve-se uma potencialização na gestão da empresa, reduzindo os gastos energéticos e materiais. Atingiu-se tal solução por meio de uma melhor organização de etapas operacionais nas fases antecedentes ao uso do produto, buscando adequar-se ao sistema slow fashion, com a otimização do volume de compras e logística de vendas, reavaliação da embalagem e material aplicados. Percebeu-se que a matéria prima já em uso é a menos impactante para o ambiente por ser de alta durabilidade e passível de reaproveiramnento. Por fim, redesenhou-se a embalagem com tecido reciclado, de uma forma que possa ser reutilizada pelo consumidor final após ser adquirida. Conclui-se que é possível readequar um sistema já em andamento, adaptando-o de forma a reduzir seu impacto na natureza por meio do slow fashion e design de sistemas, valorizando o processo de produção, não só o lucro financeiro que a venda do produto proporciona, além de aperfeiçoar o sistema como uma unidade e repensar o conjunto para valorizar a qualidade e o modo de produção, expondo a possibilidade de renovar o sistema industrial vigente de modo sustentável e consciente, por meio de uma ação local, visando atingir um macrossistema de forma harmônica. O controle das pressões em sistemas de bombeamento de água é uma medida eficaz de eficiência energética. Além disso, em sistemas com demanda variável, métodos mais robustos devem ser utilizados devido às mudanças dinâmicas inerentes ao processo. Este trabalho propôs um controlador ARX (Autoregressivo com Entrada Exógenas) para o controle das pressões de um sistema de bombeamento com demanda variável. O controlador é responsável por regular a velocidade de rotação do conjunto motobomba para manter as pressões nos set-points. O controlador ARX é obtido por modelagem computacional; para tanto, foi utilizado um controlador Fuzzy para a construção do banco de dados de treinamento. Concomitante, é proposto um método de minimização das variabilidades dos dados de treinamento, com o objetivo de aumentar a performance do controlador proposto. O controlador foi testado em um sistema experimental, objetivando analisar e comparar seus resultados à outros controladores (Neural e Fuzzy) em regime transitório, permanente e com relação à distúrbios. Observou-se o controle das pressões nos set-points, sem overshoot e com baixo transiente hidráulico, além de ótima estabilidade (erro<5%) em situações severas de variação de demanda. Conclui-se que a técnica de controle proposta apresentou um ganho concreto na estabilidade e controle do sistema de bombeamento.

Nowadays, power converters play a fundamental role in the conditioning and processing of active and reactive power, and are directly related to power quality indexes. In this sense, new multi-level converter topologies have been integrated in order to provide higher power processing capacity with lower harmonic distortion, switch stress, heating, and losses. The use of these structures compared to conventional two-level converters is especially suitable for high power of the order of megawatt. Considering the relevance of this approach, this paper presents a comparative performance analysis among the conventional two-level topology (2L-VSC) and two multilevel topologies in a grid-connected system: neutral point clamped (NPC) and modular multilevel converter (MMC). Simulation test results present the impacts on voltages and currents for the switches and the whole system, as well as the evaluation of the total harmonic distortion (THD) in order to highlight the crucial points of each topology for this kind of application.

Managing wireless networks is challenging due to the requirement of ensuring good performance while coexisting with other networks. This paper analyses a production wireless network that is also used for research. The wireless network at Universidade Federal Fluminense uses home grown technology which was funded by RNP in the SCIFI work group, which is composed of a software controller and low cost access points compatible with OpenWRT. The analysis of the wireless network is performed modeling the network as a directed graph, in which nodes are the access points and edges represent vicinity. Algorithms for choosing the wireless channel in order to maximize performance by minimizing interference both by access points which are controlled or not by the system. The characteristics of associations of user devices to the wireless network are shown. The results of the analysis show that, after the installation of new channel, up to 75% of unmanaged networks in the vicinity of an access point switch their channel to adapt to the new wireless configuration.

The COVID-19 pandemic has cut deep into people’s lives. With the complexity of measures to prevent the spread of infection and the danger of consequences, in addition to health systems, it has tested humanity, solidarity and resilience, and good governance of society as a whole in crisis situations. People have always been exposed to the dangers of infectious diseases and other sources of uncertainty, but never before with such complexity and rapidity that, so to speak, at one point covered the entire world community and countries. Against this background, the need for responsive, resilient and effective health systems is recognized in both the European Union and the World Health Organization (WHO), as only a responsive and resilient health system is able to effectively absorb shocks while delivering seamless health services and transition. a state of socalled new normality. The experience with COVID-19 also points to the risks of new pandemics. At the same time, with reasonable caution, it calls for systemic, interdisciplinary thinking on new approaches to increase the resilience of health systems through the ability to respond effectively and respond to crises.

A hash to curve function H, mapping bit strings to points on an elliptic curve, is often required in cryptographic schemes based on elliptic curves. Its construction is based on a deterministic encoding and a cryptographic hash function, which complementarily dominate its execution time. To improve the performance of H, we propose a parallel strategy where two units execute in tandem the internal operations of H. We instantiate this approach with a parallel software implementation of a hash to curve function that outputs points on a twisted Edwards curve. A performance benchmark on Haswell and Skylake micro-architectures shows that our parallel implementation is 1.4 times faster than its sequential implementation.

The influence of Pedro Luis Escrivá in the American colonial defense systemThe architect and military engineer Pedro Luis Escrivá (1490 ca. - sixteenth century), at the service of Charles V of Habsburg and the Viceroyal Court of Naples, built two bastioned fortifications designed to considerably influence the subject of territorial defense structures: The quadrangular Spanish Fort of L'Aquila (1534-1567) and the reconstruction of the Sant’Elmo Castle in Naples (1537), with an elongated six-pointed stellar plan, served as a reference point for the European and American fortifications of the period. Due to its size and versatility, the model adopted in L’Aquila was widely used in the Latin American context between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. It is found in countries that were Hispanic colonies such as Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay; as well as in the Hispanic domains of the United States and in some of the dependent territories of the Portuguese crown, in Brazil. Based on a historical-architectural and contextual analysis of these structures, the effects of the “cultural transfer” between Europe and America will be investigated with respect to the model devised by Escrivá to promote its cultural valorization.

Nowadays, video lectures are a very popular way to transmit knowledge, and because of that, there are many repositories with a large catalog of those videos on web. Despite all benefits that this high availability of video lectures brings, some problems also emerge from this scenario. One of these problems is that, it is very difficult find relevant content associate with those videos. Many times, students must to watch the entire video lecture to find the point of interest and, sometimes, these points are not found. For that reason, the proposal of this master’s project is to investigate and propose a novel framework based on early fusion of low and high-level audio features enriched with external knowledge from open databases for automatic topic segmentation in video lectures. We have performed preliminary experiments in two sets of video lectures using the current state of our work. The obtained results were very satisfactory, which evidences the potential of our proposal.

With the advent of the 4th industrial revolution and disruption with traditional methods of construction, the pre-fabrication of constructive systems has never been so prominent. The competitiveness of the sector and the complexity of the projects have increased substantially, so that the survival of companies in this sector is associated with their ability to optimize resources and decrease the waste of their production. Thus, the application of Lean Manufacturing concepts, which focus on waste reduction, presents itself as an alternative not only viable, to provide mapping and waste reduction tools, but also desirable, by philosophically approaching the entire system in the which the company is inserted, positively impacting the company culture. The objective of this work is to indicate, within a flow chart of activities of a real company, points where Lean concepts and tools would add value to the process. To this end, the production stages were raised, detailing the macro-processes of armature, set-up of forms, concreting and preparation for shipment, in order to identify points where some of the tools of Lean's philosophy could be applied.
