Gong, Qian. The Red Sister-in-Law Remakes. Hong Kong University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5790/hongkong/9789888390892.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
Ode to Yimeng (Yingmeng Song), a major ballet production created in May 1974, was based on the short story “Red Sister-in-Law” (Hongsao). It is one of the “red classics” that deals with a revolutionary “base area,” and in essence, is about how the Communist Party won the support of the subaltern, the backbone of Chinese society at a tipping point in modern Chinese history, when CCP triumphed over the Nationalist army. The story of heroine, Sister-in-Law Ying, who saved a seriously wounded Communist soldier with her breast milk and nurtured him back to life, was once metaphoric and metonymic of the symbiotic relationships between army and the people. This chapter argues that the post-Mao remake in the format of a television drama has significantly re-defined the essence of the “fish-and-water” relationship in the spirit of traditional Chinese values and, in particular, Confucian values.

Gissing, George. The Odd Women. Edited by Patricia Ingham. Oxford University Press, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199538300.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
`There are half a million more women than men in this unhappy country of ours . . . So many odd women - no making a pair with them.' The idea of the superfluity of unmarried women was one the `New Woman' novels of the 1890s sought to challenge. But in The Odd Women (1893) Gissing satirizes the prevailing literary image of the `New Woman' and makes the point that unmarried women were generally viewed less as noble and romantic figures than as `odd' and marginal in relation to the ideal of womanhood itself. Set in grimy, fog-ridden London, these `odd' women range from the idealistic, financially self-sufficient Mary Barfoot and Rhoda Nunn, who run a school to train young women in office skills for work, to the Madden sisters struggling to subsist in low-paid jobs and experiencing little comfort or pleasure in their lives. Yet it is for the youngest Madden sister's marriage that the novel reserves its most sinister critique. With superb detachment Gissing captures contemporary society's ambivalence towards its own period of transition. The Odd Women is a novel engaged with all the major sexual and social issues of the late-nineteenth century. Judged by contemporary reviewers as equal to Zola and Ibsen, Gissing was seen to have produced an `intensely modern' work and it is perhaps for this reason that the issues it raises remain the subject of contemporary debate.

Abstract:
This chapter describes events in the life of Anna Howard Shaw from 1871 to 1880. Shaw had a vision that God had called her to a larger life. However, with no independent means of wealth, her choices appeared to be limited to marrying or resigning herself to struggle along as an impoverished schoolteacher, living in her parents' home. To gain access to any formal education for herself, she would have to leave that home. At this point Anna turned to the only resource she did have beyond her own dreams, ingenuity, and determination—her sister Mary, who had married a successful entrepreneur. So it was that Anna made the difficult and seemingly selfish decision to leave her parents' home and move in with her sister to seek her options in the small town of Big Rapids, Michigan. On August 26, 1873, the Big Rapids District Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church enthusiastically licensed twenty-six-year-old “Annie Howard Shaw” as a local preacher. In June 1878 Shaw sailed for Europe. By then she had earned her education and possessed her first investments. This thirty-one-year-old daughter of impoverished immigrants returned to tour the great sights of the continent.

Burney, Fanny. Camilla. Edited by Edward A. Bloom and Lillian D. Bloom. Oxford University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199555741.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
First published in 1796, Camilla deals with the matrimonial concerns of a group of young people-Camilla Tyrold and her sisters, the daughters of a country parson, and their cousin Indiana Lynmere-and, in particular, with the love affair between Camilla herself and her eligible suitor, Edgar Mandlebert. The path of true love, however, is strewn with intrigue, contretemps and misunderstanding. An enormously popular eighteenth-century novel, Camilla is touched at many points by the advancing spirit of romanticism. As in Evelina, Fanny Burney weaves into her novel strands of light and dark, comic episodes and gothic shudders, and creates a pattern of social and moral dilemmas which emphasize and illuminate the gap between generations. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Austen, Jane. Teenage Writings. Edited by Kathryn Sutherland and Freya Johnston. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780198737452.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
‘Jane Austen practising’ Virginia Woolf Three notebooks of Jane Austen's teenage writings survive. The earliest pieces probably date from 1786 or 1787, around the time that Jane, aged 11 or 12, and her older sister and collaborator Cassandra left school. By this point Austen was already an indiscriminate and precocious reader, devouring pulp fiction and classic literature alike; what she read, she soon began to imitate and parody. Unlike many teenage writings then and now, these are not secret or agonized confessions entrusted to a private journal and for the writer's eyes alone. Rather, they are stories to be shared and admired by a named audience of family and friends. Devices and themes which appear subtly in Austen's later fiction run riot openly and exuberantly across the teenage page. Drunkenness, brawling, sexual misdemeanour, theft, and even murder prevail.

Kimber, Gerri, Todd Martin, and Christine Froula, eds. Katherine Mansfield and Virginia Woolf. Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474439657.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Katherine Mansfield’s ardent overture to Virginia Woolf launched a historic friendship of mutual admiration and fascination shot through with wary misunderstandings, rivalry, and envy. These comparative essays explore the shared terrain of these modernist women writers and shed new light on their 'curious & thrilling' literary relationship – absorbing, intimate, distant, secretly critical, competitive, sometimes foundering in ‘quicksands’ – and its profound impact on their creative imaginations. Critical essays include Katherine Mansfield Essay Prizewinner Karina Jakubowicz on Woolf’s Kew Gardens, Maud Ellmann on disgust, Maria DiBattista on these artists’ distinctive takes on ‘reality’, Sydney Janet Kaplan on the Conrad Aiken connection, and Christine Froula on Mansfield’s secrets. Creative artists include Vanessa Bell in painterly dialogue with her sister’s classic manifesto A Room of One’s Own, the celebrated novelist Ali Smith -- ‘Scotland’s Nobel-laureate-in-waiting’, says Irish playwright Sebastian Barry – whose ‘Getting Virginia Woolf’s Goat’ leads the creative section, ['and' deleted] Barbara Egel’s dramatic adaptation of Woolf’s story ‘Moments of Being: "Slater’s Pins Have No Points"’ and [deleted:original; add:] new poems by Jackie Jones and Maggie Rainey-Smith.
