Abstract:
This article explains the impact of the explosion of Polish entrepreneurship (the so-called founding privatization) on the modernization of social structure and free market institutions in Poland. It has been shown that the process of revival of entrepreneurship after 1988 took place with the use of experiences included in the concept of heritage of the past. Changes in the ownership structure of economic organizations observed after 1988 are discussed in statistical terms. This change was of great importance for the modernization of the company size structure in Poland. The fast-paced process of rebuilding the social group of entrepreneurs played a major role in building family businesses. They are the stabilizer of the economy. For the efficiency of the modernization process in Poland after 1988, it was important to achieve institutional balance. The practice of everyday life showed that it was a difficult task to achieve a satisfactory state. As a result, the slowing down of the process of qualitative change in Poland after 1988 was largely influenced by informal institutions, including tradition and customs established in the past.

Abstract:
Uncontrolled migration is one of the internal threats to the state that also manifests itself as a civilization problem. It illustrates the growing lack of social acceptance for this phenomenon. It is the result of not only geopolitical changes, but also the sequence of social dependencies. According to data from the census, over 99.8% are citizens of the Republic of Poland, and persons without citizenship amount to 57 thousand. It should be emphasized that in recent years more and more foreigners have come to Poland in search of a better life. Despite the influx of immigrants, Poland is a country with a negative balance, which proves that more people from Poland emigrate than to come to it. Accurate estimation of the scale of the phenomenon is not easy due to the adoption of the illegal dimension and that the Central Statistical Office and the Office for Foreigners otherwise collect and present information on foreigners. There are lot of intercultural differences connected with religion, tradition, customs and social behaviour. Often the barrier between the world of immigrants and the local society is so great that it creates conflicts in the places where immigrants reside, including anti-refugee protests, inclusive.

Abstract:
Social capital is one of the most important factors influencing the development level. In the case of rural areas, it is important to determine its level in farms, because they are key factors influencing the development of these areas. The literature review shows that there are not many studies devoted to this subject from the perspective of smallholders in new member states of the European Union. Therefore, the objective of this article is to determine the social capital of small farmers in three selected countries of the European Union, i.e., Poland, Romania and Lithuania. Our study fills a research gap and provides a basis for further research. To achieve the aim of the study, the method of direct interviews with the owners of small farms in Poland, Lithuania, and Romania (20 farms from each country) was used. The interviews were conducted in 2020. The research shows that the participation of small farmers from Poland, Romania and Lithuania in social activities is low and at a comparable level in each of these countries. The main reason for the low participation of farmers in social activities is the workload. However, the social aspect of the impact of small farms cannot only be narrowed down to direct involvement in social life. It manifests itself primarily in the social functions performed by these farms, that is, cultivating customs, building social ties, reducing depopulation and increasing the vitality of the countryside.

Abstract:
The full-scale military invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation in 2022 triggered a massive wave of forced migration to Poland. This has resulted in the phenomenon of ‘unintended transnationalism.’ Transnational migrants do not part with their country of origin forever but live a double life, act as members of two socio-cultural communities and become carriers of a double culture. This study aims to systematize the socio-cultural peculiarities of the unintended transnationalism of military migrants from Ukraine to Poland. The theoretical foundations of migrants’ transnationalism are systematically analyzed and its main characteristics are systematized. The emergence of the so-called unintentional transnationalism of military migrants is revealed. A comparative analysis made it possible to compare transnational processes in Poland and Ukraine. The study found that migrants’ transnationalism is manifested through sharing their cultural values, traditions, and customs in a new cultural environment. The culture of migrants includes elements of the host country’s culture, elements of the culture of the migrants’ homeland, as well as new elements arising from the interaction of these two cultures. The main manifestations of migrants’ culture are language and communication, education, religious practices, intercultural dialogue, relations between representatives of different cultures, and other aspects of their daily lives. The study has shown that the transnationalism of military migrants can generate various cultural processes, including multilingualism, hybridization, cultural diffusion, cultural preservation, and intercultural dialogue.

Abstract:
Although thirty million Muslims currently reside in the European Union, and adherents to the Islamic religion now constitute the majority of immigrants and the second largest religious group in European society, the influence of Islam on the culture of Central Europe was and is small, with the notable exception of Poland. There, a small traditional group of Polish Muslims has made a considerable contribution during six centuries of history to Poland's cultural and religious heritage: Polish Muslims or “Tartars” fought for Catholic Poland against the Catholic State of the Teutonic Order, and almost always stood by their Polish kings against incursions from the Sunni Turks, highlighting the importance of the loyalty felt to the Polish homeland. By the same token, Polish culture has been greatly enriched by Tartar customs, in a gradual and complex process of acculturation - a process that was ‘necessary’, ‘extended’ and ‘complete’ in its various phases. More recent migrants and refugees arriving in Poland have increased the ethnic and religious diversity of the Polish Muslim community, with marked social and theological implications. These are reflected today in the plethora of organisations representing the interests of various Muslim groups and organisations in the country. Furthermore, the advanced extent of Christian-Muslim dialogue, something well developed in Poland, manifests a true “dialogue of life” and reflects the shared desire to promote understanding, stimulate communication, and work collaboratively on specific problems of mutual concern.

Abstract:
One of the tasks of preventive medicine as part of sexual prophylaxis is to improve sexual culture. Sexual culture is the entirety of sexual life of a society that origins from magic, religion and ideology in its aesthetic, emotional, family and social manifestations. It permeates art, affects the law, creates its own myths, models of love, ars amandi, norms and customs serving as social rituals. The moral transformations taking place in all countries of the Western cultural area are manifested first of all by the loosening of traditional norms regulating sexual intercourse. Increasingly, researchers sensitize adults to the growing popularity of the so-called orgiastic sex, in which the escalation of sexual stimuli (influenced by alcohol and/or drugs) is associated with the lack of ethical standards and principles, which causes the preference of various atypical (eg. group sex) and deviant forms of sexual activity (eg. sadistic sex). The aim of the research presented in this study was to get to know the sexual culture of Polish and Ukrainian students. Research problems have focused on the following questions: What does the sexual culture mean for the respondents? How many times have the respondents betrayed their partner? How often do the respondents talk to their partners about sexual needs?

Abstract:
The aim of the paper is to present these events and experiences whose occurrence in the life of a noble family in late‑medieval Poland was the consequence of the death of husband and father. This was achieved by means of reconstructing the life story of Elżbieta, the fourth wife of the Kalisz‑district chamberlain Rafał of Gołuchowo from the Wieniawa family, as well as that of his sons and daughter (Iwan, Rafał, Jan, Andrzej, and Cherubin, and their sister Barbara), after his death. This reconstruction essentially provided insight into such activities undertaken by them or with their participation as taking ownership of the property left to the widow, establishing custody of the children that had not yet come of age and of their assets, establishing guardianship of the as yet unmarried daughter and regulating the payment of her part of the family money in the form of a monetary dowry, and, in time, dividing the family estate between the brothers. These actions were, in a way, a natural consequence of the death of husband and father, and were a part of the life of most families living in those times. An analysis of their realisation in social practice based on relevant records in court’s registers allow to understand the underlying legal customs, only partly reflected in the norms of the written law, as well as the events and experiences which resulted from the death of husband and father for his wife and children, and the role played by their relatives in this period of their lives.

Abstract:
Practices of corporate social responsibility (CSR), especially in organizations providing key services, related to the supply of fuel, water and energy, are extremely important from the point of view of identifying stakeholders with the functioning of enterprises in line with the principles of a closed loop economy. The article discusses the origins and evolution of the concept of corporate social responsibility, with particular emphasis on the water supply and sewage industry. The research problem was the perception and expectations of stakeholders toward prosocial activities of PWiK Rybnik (Sewage and Water Supply Ltd. Rybnik). The hypothesis assumed in the study was that the external stakeholders of PWIK Rybnik positively assess the company’s involvement in the tasks carried out as part of corporate social responsibility, they notice the involvement in educational activities and additional initiatives of PWIK that improve the quality of life of its inhabitants. For the purpose of this study, a quantitative method was used. For the purpose of the survey, the authors’ questionnaire “Survey of customers’ opinions on the activities undertaken by PWiK Rybnik” was created. The surveys conducted confirmed the hypothesis that the external stakeholders of PWIK Rybnik positively assess the company’s involvement in the tasks performed as part of corporate social responsibility; they notice the involvement in educational activities and additional initiatives of PWIK that improve the quality of life of its inhabitants. The results of the research made it possible to formulate guidelines for the operation of water supply and sewage companies in accordance with corporate social responsibility in the light of the opinions of their stakeholders.

Abstract:
Abstract Research background: The fast pace of life of contemporary people living in developed countries results in a search for peace and relaxation, which is reflected in new forms of tourism. One of them is slow tourism, which is at an early stage of development. A new type of tourist is emerging – one who is conscious, responsible, critical, respectful of nature, open to learning about the customs, culture and religion of local populations. Purpose: This paper analyses the changes that take place in tourism from a socio-economic perspective, characterized by withdrawing from mass tourism and a shift towards individual tourism, with particular emphasis on slow tourism. Research methodology: The paper is based on a compilation of the current literature of the subject, reports and analysis of Polish websites devoted to slow travel. It is a synthesis of economic and social aspects of slow tourism development, including the motives for taking up slow tourism by tourists and the offer of slow travel in Poland. Results: The analysis of the literature reveals a large diversity in the definition of slow tourism. A lively discussion is going on regarding the meaning of the new trend, its importance and future. In Poland, slow tourism is becoming increasingly popular, as evidenced by, among others: an increase in the number of offers for slow tourists. Novelty: This analysis contributes to deepening the knowledge on new trends in tourism – slow tourism. These considerations contribute to the author’s further research on the development of this phenomenon.

Thefollowing research hypothesis was verified in the study: the lack of supervisionover payday loan companies in Poland contributes to usurious exploitation ofthe people excluded by banks, which results in a debt spiral for a considerablesegment of customers.

Abstract:
On the two Galicias: from Lesser Poland to the outskirts of Europe, from the Atlantic to the Vistula riverThe article is aiming to compare the two European Galicias: the Spanish one, being one of the autonomous communities of Spain and the historical-cultural region located in the East-Central part of Europe. Is there, apart from the coincidence of names which may serve as a good starting point for the play of words and anecdotes on ‘national characters’, something more which links these two distant geographic territories? From the socio-cultural perspective it is worth to have a look at the sphere of social ideas and myths which accompany discussions on the two Galicias. Is there in the complicated and quite elusive (in the sense of uncountable, changing and subjective) matter of local traditions, daily life patterns and customs, any link between the two European Galicias? In this short article, I will try to refer to certain stereotypes, cultural myths and anecdotes came to being in the sphere of social concepts. They were created, on one hand, by the media (in particular in the context of the unification of the richer Europe with its poorer part), on the other – by individual human experiences, in whose lives dual Galician adventures entwined.

Background. The time of studies and the change in the social environment resulting from taking up education at a university is a time of complex experiences for young people, during which they encounter factors that predispose them to change their eating habits and to increased susceptibility to mental disor ders. The lifestyle of university students who aim to shape their health behaviors in their new environment is mediated by a multitude of factors. Therefore, in the present study, we seek to identify health behaviors (eating behaviors, the use of stimulants and addictive substances - tobacco) in terms of self-perception of an appearance among students at selected higher education institutions in Poland. This empirical study was conducted using a custom-designed questionnaire with an indirect interview technique via a web based platform (CAWI) in the period from 1 February to 31 March 2023. The study covered 805 respond ents, of which 461 were women and 344 men. Results and conclusions. It has been shown that a high level of satisfaction with body parts and nor mal body weight are factors influencing the self-assessment of the quality of life, health and nutrition among young adults. An interesting phenomenon that has been observed is the influence of the level of satisfaction with body parts on the frequency of eating and preparing meals. In addition, all young people unequivocally believed that one’s appearance is important in the life of a modern person. In their opinion, it plays a particularly important role in finding a well-paid job and a life partner. The results contribute to an understanding of potential pathways of healthy eating development, thereby highlighting possible intervention targets.

Abstract:
Abstract The presented text discusses the problems of academic and teacher education under conditions of consumption culture and neoliberal ideology development at the beginning of the 21st century in Poland. The article puts the thesis that neo-liberalism, manifested by economic phenomena, permeates all spheres of social life, enhancing the characteristics of consumption culture. It enters education, including academic education. In this context, there has been shown a part of our research conducted in 2006-2016 (27 interviews in depth with students completing Master’s degree in Pedagogy). The research has taken the form of semantic reconstruction of statements made on studies and pedagogical training, expressed by students during in-depth interviews (IDI). During the research study the leading categories have been defined, which set the main perspectives for thinking about study. Within these perspectives, the student’s goals of study have been identified and more detailed profiles of perceiving pedagogical studies have been defined. The comparative analysis of the IDI narratives of 2006 and 2016 allows us to see phenomena that can be interpreted as indicating that pedagogy students are increasingly taking over the market thinking, acting more explicitly as customers of educational services, presenting a utilitarian attitude to study.

Abstract:
Neighbourhood liveability is a concept reflecting the perceived living conditions in a housing area. Liveability depends on one hand on the relationship between demand and supply on the local services market, and on the other hand on the spatial structure of the neighbourhood. In this paper we combine those two aspects by asking a question: what physical forms are the most effective in providing quality of life and satisfying the everyday needs of citizens? We present the results of social survey and mapping analysis conducted in 5 neighbourhoods in Poland representing big cities, medium towns and suburbs. Each case study included opinions of both the customers and services providers. The results show that there are particular spatial structures (streets, squares, passages) positively evaluated by each of the two groups, determining the neighbourhood liveability.

Abstract:
Water had a special cultural significance in human life. Water was a cheap and widely available resource for everyone. Water has fulfilled a wide variety of functions over the centuries. People even believed in the magical properties of water. The water also had a symbolic effect - it cleansed the body from sins. However, it was during this period in Western Europe that drinking water was considered harmful to health. In spite of this, in the 16th century the poorest peasants and monks who lived the harsh monastery life were drinking water in Poland, also the monarchs from the Jagiellonian dynasty, who were afraid of poison, drank water. However, the richer social strata drank beer or, more rarely, wine. It was believed that stagnant water (in reservoirs) was spreading epidemics. The authors of medical guides claimed that drinking such water could cause infertility, dysentery and other diseases. Only boiling the water was a way to improve its properties. To eliminate the smell they were adding garlic, salt, and vinegar, the Tartars brought from Asia the custom of adding so-called Tatar herb, later called calamus, and other herbs (eg. mint, sage) were also added to the water.

Abstract:
RESEARCH INTO OCCASIONAL DAILIES IN POLAND AFTER 2008In recent years scholars have become increasingly drawn to publications documenting the life of society. Manifestations of this growing interest include an international conference devoted to such publications and organised in October 2004 by the Institute of Library and Information Science, University of Wrocław. The participants discussed the subject of occasional dailies, unique documents somewhere between non-periodical and serial publications. Numerous papers devoted to such publications were written by Małgorzata Korczyńska-Derkacz, who in 2008 presented the state of research into occasional dailies and carried out their multifaceted assessment as source materials, using the data from the Central Catalogue of Polish Periodicals. The present paper complements and continues the research carried out earlier. The topics most frequently tackled by scholars include those devoted to specific titles, historical periods occasional dailies in the inter-war period, places of publication Lviv, Kraków, publishing institution or milieu firefighters, students, scouts, ethnic groups Jewish dailies. Few scholars have tackled dailies from the point of view of their untypical editorial and formal features periodical or non-periodical publication and the related problems with their formal and substantive description. The fact that occasional dailies have been incorporated into the collections of digital libraries and the growing number of bibliographic compilations, including Volume 16 of the Polish Bibliography 1901–1939 devoted entirely to such publications, stimulate the interest of historians of the press, linguists, sociologists, ethnographers, culture scholars, historians of social movements, politics and economy, historians studying the customs and traditions of various ethnic and professional groups, localities and education. Abstract:
The paper attempts to investigate modern challenges associated with budget execution in Ukraine under military aggression, as well as to identify trends of change in forecast indicators in the future. It is observed that the full-scale war of Russia against Ukraine has inflicted a heavy blow on the Ukrainian economy, thus almost ceasing the opportunity of budget execution in Ukraine which in turn spurs a significant on-going drop in budget revenues against rapidly increasing public expenditures under the pressure of military and social spending. It is reported that since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion to Ukraine, the total budget deficit has increased to almost 263 billion UAH. It argued that in extremely difficult wartime, Ukrainian taxpayers who their best to fulfil their timely scheduled obligations to the budget have become a profound source of budget stuffing providing strong support for the Armed Forces. In the current realia of Russian aggression, as long as the war lasts, it is rather hard to predict medium-term prospects in the area of public finance, as well as to forecast what exactly will happen to government revenues and expenditures in the future. It is emphasized that the key development trends in government income and expenditures will fully depend on the war duration and the specifics of military actions in the future. However, the findings demonstrate that the Ukrainian economy, although slowly but gradually, is still adapting to the new wartime realia of life and doing business. Thus, the government is encouraging entrepreneurial endeavours at all levels, thereby boosting business activity. According to the results of the study, the inflation rate in Ukraine which is underpinned by the increase in fuel prices could be considered as moderate which consequently will contribute to further budget stuffing, primarily through VAT. Apart from the above, the findings suggest that in the future, Ukraine will need to critically evaluate the effectiveness of unprecedented customs duty exemptions and preferences that have started to create barriers to national producers’ competitiveness, impose additional pressure on the exchange rate, and worsen the balance of payments. However, it is argued that the current state of underpayment of customs revenues will continue. The conclusions resume that there is a critical need to expand the throughput capacity of crossing points to enhance international trade and export, in particular. In this context, the following are considered to be promising steps forward: abolishment by the European Union of all customs duties and quotas on goods and products on the Ukrainian exports during the year; announcement by the President of Ukraine of signing a bilateral agreement between Ukraine and Poland on joint border and customs control. It is noted that thanks to the adoption of the relevant legislative acts, expenditures for the national security and defense purposes and for overcoming the negative effects caused by Russia's large-scale armed aggression against Ukraine have been increased. Within the scope of this study, the authors rely on the Law of Ukraine "On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine "On the State Budget of Ukraine for 2022" dated May 31, 2022, according to which most of the funds will be directed to national security and defense (247.8 billion UAH), assistance within the framework of the "eSupport" Program for citizens who lost their jobs due to the war (5.8 billion UAH), assistance to internally displaced persons to cover living expenses (12.5 billion UAH), payment of pensions, allowances and increases to pensions assigned under various pension programs (20 billion UAH).

Abstract:
Abstract At the time of crisis, which involves state funded benefits as well as an increase in public debt, the members of the European Union are forced to consolidate their budgetary expenses. The social cost, however, is extremely high, as the general public is unwilling to accept it. Demographic experts predict a decrease in the amount of people at an economically productive age, not to mention the continuously growing life expectancy. This fact will have serious economic consequences in Poland. That is why the pension system reform was initiated. The inevitable cuts in spending on welfare benefits might cause a situation in which one of the possibilities of increasing retirement benefits leads to the use of the most valuable and long-lasting assets that can be found in households - real estate. A financial instrument called reverse mortgage enables the gradual liberalization of the value of real estate and, thereby, can be used as an additional source of retirement income. In Poland, the lack of verification by the Polish Financial Supervision Authority and legislative regulations as far as contractors and consumers are concerned, may pose a potential risk. There are two main problems, namely, the legal status of companies that offer reverse mortgages (in the case of possible bankruptcy and debt vindication) as well as issues concerning cyclic value changes on real estate markets. Because of the lack of a reverse mortgage bill, there is no institution which can control the financial situation of contractors, thereby guaranteeing the safety of potential customers. The goal of this article is to determine the prospects of the development of reverse mortgage in Poland from a cultural perspective in terms of potential client preferences by carrying out a survey among people aged 18 to 30 (mostly students from different cities) and senior citizens over the age of 60. The other aim is to assess the influence of cultural determinants on the perception of equity release products. The author poses a question: In what way does ownership and inheritance attitude influence the volume of reverse mortgage sales?

Bondarchuk, Olesya. "THE DECLINE OF THE NOBLE PAST AS A PROBLEM COMPLEX IN THE MEMOIRS OF T. BOBROVSKY." Polish Studies of Kyiv, no. 37 (2021): 86–106. http://dx.doi.org/10.17721/psk.2021.37.86-106.

Abstract:
The article presents a study of issues that were often on the periph- ery of the author’s narrative. It was found that the problem of exdivision (collection of debts from movable property) is revealed by the memoirist with the help of factuality and saturation of the text with numbers, which is a manifestation of positivist tendencies in the work of T. Bobrovsky. This process leads to the decline of noble residences, which is often accompanied by the image of ruin ‒ a symbol not only of the decline of the former material greatness of the nobility, but also the moral and ethical values of ancient Poland. The problems of conformism and “right-bank euphoria”, highlighted by the memoirist as a spiritual destruction of society, are depicted in numerous plot inserts of comic content. Particular attention in the work of T. Bobrovsky is paid to the phenomenon of «Balagulshchyna», which is seen as a result of degradation and demoralization of the youth of that time, which, on the one hand, could not be properly realized in the modern world with the help of chivalrous landmarks, and on the other - as a protest against the outdated social order. The problems of social depression and the decline of ancient traditions are expressed in «Memoirs ...» by the motive of longing for the noble past. One of the manifestations of sadness in the old days, orders and customs is the tendentious use of the landscape, such as the landscape sketch of Zhytomyr. In a laconic, dry, and sometimes protocol presentation, memories of the nature of the Zhytomyr area impress with their splendor and imagery, emphasizing the uniqueness of the content. This approach to the artistic reflections of the landscape is the impetus for the development of conclusions about the historical past of the region and about nostalgic reflections, which relate primarily to the noble past. The figurative landscape, in the context of a rather «ascetic» narration, stimulates the recipient of the memoirs to read and read quite carefully, because this is a single description of the landscape in the «Memoirs ...». Issues of social depression, «right-bank euphoria», conformism and the decline of aristocratic traditions are revealed in the descriptions of events not only after the November but also the January Uprising. Such duality, according to the author, demonstrates the need to restore statehood by democratic rather than armed methods. Thus, in the memoirist’s work we find a whole set of issues that reveal the problem of the decline of the aristocratic past and which, on the example of public life of the Right Bank, reflect the national tragedy of Polish statehood as a whole.

Abstract:
Private correspondence of the hierarchs from the metropolis of Kiev in the 18th century as a source for study the history of the Unite Church in the Republic of Poland An important source for researching the history of the Uniate Church in the second half of the 18th century is correspondence exchanged among its hierarchs (Piotr Bielański, Stefan Lewiński, Jason Smogorzewski). Letters were both a form of distance communication and a means of dealing with particular matters. The subject matter most decidedly dealt with was appointment of bishopric hierarchs, both in terms of candidates as well as circumstances. The analysis of these letters shows that the selection of the staffing of bishoprics was perceived as a result of efforts within the circles of the royal court. A lack of qualifications was not an obstacle in assuming the position of a Uniate bishop in the Republic of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The correspondence shows that the party rigorously standing up for adhering to legal norms in filling the posts was the Holy See, decidedly rejecting solutions not justified by the law and having a temporary nature. The contents of the letters illustrates the Uniate Church hierarchs’ confusion, lost between tradition and modernity. An example being the Lewiński’s reference to a custom not used for a long time, practised in the Uniate Church, of summoning Uniate hierarchs to an election meeting in order to elect the Metropolitan Bishop. The contents of the correspondence between Uniate hierarchs expresses numerous doubts related to legal background of activities carried out by the Uniate Church and a lack of clear guidelines. These letters illustrate transformations of bishops’ attitudes in the face of a choice between their own tradition, whose knowledge was sometimes unsatisfactory, and adopting solutions related to changes caused by the spread of new ideas of the Renaissance and adapting to current changes in the social and political life, e.g. changes in the calendar leading to a decreased number of holidays and unification of the Liturgy calendar with the Gregorian calendar. The bishops’ correspondence reflects anxieties of a social nature in Wołyń and Podole during the Great Sejm, in the 19th-century historical writings as ‘the Wołyń fear’. The analysis of the correspondence carried out by the Episcopate of the Kiev Uniate Metropolis shows a huge interest in social and family life by selected representatives of social elites. The ideas which we learn from the correspondence are evidence of the feeling of separateness and own identity of faithful and clergy and hierarchs of the Uniate Church.

Ut non diligat vir uxorem sicut adulteram — sexuality in medieval Poland as seen by the preachersHow can the attitudes of medieval people towards any manifestations of sexuality be examined? The objective of the study is to reveal the utility of sermons in research on sexuality in medieval Poland. Knowing that the content of the studied sermons is frequently set in the reality of everyday life, it is not unfounded to expect that any kinds of behaviour and attitudes criticized and condemned by preachers constitute a credible reflection of the customs typical for the inhabitants of medieval Poland. One can therefore discover what kind of sexually motivated behaviour was permitted, what attitudes were expected and what eluded any control, shaping the reality and customs of medieval Poland.

Abstract:
Cigarette smuggling is an important part of the illicit cigarette trade in the European Union. The most frequently cited reason for smuggling is a significant difference in cigarette prices resulting from the large share of customs and taxes (primarily the excise tax) in cigarette prices. The magnitude of this phenomenon in a given country depends, among other things, on its geopolitical location and its legal, economic and social conditions. Poland, taking into account its geopolitical location, is one of the EU countries that are crossed by “transit routes” for cigarette smuggling, including the route across the EU’s internal border between Poland and Lithuania. At the same time, it is a country where smuggling detection rates are high. Customs control by customs administration bodies based on risk analysis, supported by international exchange of information, and their cooperation with other entities on the national, European, and international level are of particular importance in this regard. The main objectives of the article are to identify the legal arrangements for customs control as the primary guarantor of compliance with the prohibitions and restrictions on international trade in goods and to assess its impact on the rates of detection of cigarette smuggling.

Abstract:
The article presents beliefs and rituals related to All Souls’ Day typical for folk Catholicism in Poland. It is based on the results of the ethnographic fieldwork conducted by the author in Radom and Opoczno regions (central Poland), in the years 1980-1983, 1990-1993 and 1998-2005 (a total of 414 days, 650 interviews with 998 informants), as well as on the literature concerning this and other regions of Poland. The popular remembrance of the dead and care for their graves is noticeable throughout the year. Cemeteries in Poland are often visited by people whose relatives passed over to “the other world,” who place flowers and candles on the graves, tidy them up, and pray. Commemoration of the dead takes on a special dimension such days as Christmas, Easter, All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day. Many old All Souls’ rituals disappeared already in the Middle Ages as a result of Christianization and eradication of pre-Christian beliefs. Still, until the 1970s one could observe or reconstruct (relying on the memory of informants) many pre-Christian beliefs and customs that used to be regulated by the ancient ritual calendar based on the solar cycle and the worship of ancestors. The presence of those ancient elements in folk beliefs and rituals indicates a strong faith of the people in life after death, exhibited also by the inhabitants of the area under study both in past centuries and today, although today those customs are given a Christian theological interpretation.

AbstractOne reason many traditional Lari customs celebrating life cycle events, such as births, marriages, and pilgrimages were preserved well into the 1970s is that women, particularly the older women, have been the keepers of this knowledge. They maintained the practice of these customs and passed on the knowledge to their daughters and younger members of their social networks. This paper examines Lari marriage practices in the 1970s and contrasts them with earlier customs as reported by older women. It discusses also the role of social networks in maintaining, changing, and passing on marriage customs.

Abstract:
The article focuses on identifying the needs and opportunities for improving the legal regulation of social protection of customs authorities employees in Ukraine. The paper highlights that today the legal regulation of social protection of customs employees is characterized by a number of problems, including the lack of appropriate inclusive approaches to personnel policy in the customs authorities, which causes risks for employees with disabilities, pregnant employees, etc.; formal and fragmentary delineation of certain measures of customs employees’ social protection in the Customs Code of Ukraine. Unresolved issues of the legal regulation of customs employees’ social protection create additional socio-legal risks for the level of social security of customs personnel, and demotivate the employees, which is an additional factor for the personnel crisis in the public service system. To solve these problems, the author proposes to create and approve the Conception of ensuring the standards for decent work and social security of customs officials for the period up to 2030, which will help to implement an inclusive approach to personnel policy in this government agency by means of ensuring gender equality among employees; creating a healthy psychological climate in the customs authorities; creating conditions for the integration of persons with disabilities and young able-bodied citizens without work experience into the working life by giving them the opportunity to work in the customs authorities. It is also proposed to make a number of amendments to the Customs Code of Ukraine, in particular, to improve the legal regulation of housing for customs officials, medical care and health care of customs officials and their families, including the regulation of funeral assistance for customs officials. The conclusions summarize the results of the research and emphasize the need for further analysis of the legal regulation of customs employees’ social protection in Ukraine.

Based on the already published and widely known materials on nomadic and Turkic cultures, traditions, and customs, the author examines connections between historical traditions of the steppe life, their representation in the modern everyday life of the Khazakh people, and their future as a part of the national culture of independent Kazakhstan. For instance, hospitality is a foundational element of both the rites of the nomadic people of the Kazakh steppe and the cultural norms of the contemporary population of Kazakhstan. Thus, the national culture, containing many traditions, customs, rituals, rituals, is the life-giving environment that can and should serve as a source of national revival for any state, and especially for Kazakhstan. Culture is able to accumulate knowledge and information about the world and pass it on from generation to generation. At the same time, it acts as the social and intellectual memory of a particular nation and humanity in general. Therefore, the purpose of the author during the period of modernization of society is to show the spiritual revival of the national culture of the Kazakh people as an integral part of the world cultural process.

Folklore reflects biological facts and social customs. Lullabies reveal that childbearing is essential for a husband and wife. If it rains when the rainy sprouting festival and the horse-drawing ceremony are held, not only the plowman of God's grace will be happy that the world has got a pleasant life. It can be seen that the folk cults which were humble originated with causal things. Folk literature refers to the civilization, culture, customs, beliefs and cults of a tribe. Folk songs, stories and proverbs cannot be considered to have originated to please others. It can be seen as an expression of people's feelings of happiness and suffering. Folk literary research has grown into a major field today. In lullabies, the mother's consciousness is abundant. Childbirth is very important in domestic life in society. The man who worshipped nature later created an appearance and worshipped the deity in the mountains, trees and water bodies. The people of the country can see that they worship the gods and their ancestors who protect the town. Folklore can see that birth, marriage and death have rituals and beliefs.

Abstract:
The Ahoms were originally a group of Tai Shans. They brought a distinct culture to Assam peculiar to the Tai culture. Although the Ahoms had their own religious customs and rituals but they did not impose their religion to other tribes and distinctly amalgamated with the culture of the local people. In the time being the Ahoms accepted Hinduism and with the advent of the neo-vaisnavism they almost lost their culture. However the Mohan Deodhai and the Bailungs, the three priestly clans of the Ahoms did not accept Hinduism and maintained their own culture and habits to a great extent. The Ahoms possesses a distinct character regarding the social life. The Ahom priestly classes who were neglected for their denial of acceptance of Hinduism in later part of the Ahom rule, became secluded from the other part of the society. The Mohan, Deodhais and the Bailungs maintained their traditional beliefs and customs in the long period of the Ahom rule and they are still preserving their tradition. So, it is necessary to look at the condition of the Ahom priestly class that how and what extent they could maintain their own culture.

Abstract:
Wiktor Ormicki – Researcher of the Eastern Territories of the Second Polish Republic The article aims to present the research interests of docent Wiktor Ormicki – a geographer and lecturer at Jagiellonian University. These revolved around the aspects of the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic and manifested, among other things, in his habilitation thesis entitled Życie gospodarcze Kresów Wschodnich Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej (The Economic Life of the Eastern Borderlands of the Republic of Poland, Kraków 1929) His interests comprised the migration issues in the northeastern voivodeships. Ormicki left notes from his research trips to the eastern borderland, which were an interesting source for the analysis of the socio-economic life in the eastern provinces of the Second Polish Republic. He described the daily activities and customs of the inhabitants of these regions. He listed economic facilities (including brickyards, distilleries, and sawmills) operating in the places he visited. He also paid attention to the towns and villages and the natural environment at the eastern border. Both the travel notes and Ormicki’s scientific works are a valuable source for researchers of everyday life and the economy of the eastern border of interwar Poland.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to characterize and assess the influence of selected economic factors on the value of purchases made by Ukrainian citizens in Poland at the border (so-called unregistered turnover on customs declarations). The ex-change rate andlabour migration as well as the impact of political disorders that occurred at the end of 2013 in Ukraine were analysed in detail. The analysis covered the period 2009—2017. Data were derived from the questionnaires of the Statistical Office in Rzeszów, Local Data Bank of Statistics Poland, State Statistics Service of Ukraine and the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy. The analysis of correlation and regression were used as the basic research tools. The results of the study show that political events affected cross-border trade indirectly through, inter alia, the exchange rate, which limited the expenses made by Ukrainian citizens in Poland. However, this impact was not strong enough to reverse the upward trend in cross-border shopping. The analyses did not provide statistically significant indications of a cause-and-effect relationship between labour migration flows of Ukrainian citizens to Poland and cross-border trade.

Abstract:
Formulation of the problem. At the present stage of development of the Ukrainian state there is a difficult economic situation caused by the pandemic and Russia’s military invasion into Ukraine. Undoubtedly, this affects all spheres of life of Ukrainian society, including the implementation of the customs policy. This provides grounds for the discussion about the objective need to pay more attention to the development and improvement of customs policy, implemented in Ukraine. The key role is given to the state, called to regulate these processes. An effective customs policy must respond flexibly to external threats and counteract quickly all the possible negative consequences of such threats towards strengthening economic interests of the state and maximizing compliance with international rules and requirements in the national customs system. The customs policy is designed to regulate foreign trade and protect of domestic producers, ensure realization of national interests in the field of stimulating the development and restructuring of the national economy. Analysis of recent research and publications. A significant number of scholars study the peculiarities of customs policy implementation and consider this multifaceted phenomenon from different points of view. In particular, it is worth mentioning such scientists as M. Bilukha, O. Hodovanets, T.Yefymenko, I. Kveliashvili, O. Kolomoiets, Martyniuk, O. Mosiakina, V. Pashko, V.Khomutynnik, and others. Their works are devo- ted to the general issues of implementation of the customs policy in Ukraine, the role of cus- toms in the system of state bodies, management of customs activities and customs control. Distinguishing previously unsolved parts of the overall problem. Dynamic changes taking place in Ukrainian society today, in particular, hostilities in Ukraine, determine the need for a deep and unified understanding of the implementation of customs policy in the context of modern challenges, which necessitates further research in this field. Presentation of the main material of the study. The system of customs authorities is designed to implement customs policy in the country on the basis of the principles of territorial organization, foreign economic activity and international cooperation defined in the Constitution. The main legislative act regulating legal relations in the country and, in particular, in the field of customs policy, is the Constitution of Ukraine. A brief overview of the peculiarities of functioning of the customs authorities of developed countries shows their universality and management of tasks far beyond the scope of powers that is inherent in the Ukrainian customs authorities. In other words, customs authorities of Ukraine are characterized by narrow specialization and fulfillment of only those responsibilities that directly belong to the field of customs policy of the state. Foreign experience makes it possible to understand, which direction the Ukrainian state is moving in view of the unification of domestic customs policy. Thus, having chosen the European integration course, Ukraine has embarked on the path of expanding foreign economic ties and deepening cooperation with European countries. Accordingly, the customs policy of Ukraine, based on the legislative and regulatory framework built on European standards and which is designed to regulate legal relations arising between entities when crossing the customs border, gains particular importance. Customs legislation is very dynamic and constantly unified, as the state needs constant integration with the countries of the European Union and deepening relations with them within free economic zones. In particular, emphasis should be placed on Ukraine’s accession to the World Trade Organization. This fact, as well as the European integration aspirations of Ukraine, limit the sovereignty of Ukrainian legislation in the field of customs policy. After all, the World Trade Organization proclaims a course to reducing barriers in trade and exchange of goods and services between the member states, as well as to elimination of non– tariff methods of regulating international economic relations, and the constant reduction of import tariffs. Thus, Ukraine must adjust its legislative and regulatory framework in the field of customs policy to the standards and requirements of the World Trade Organization and the European Union. The following main areas of improvement of customs policy were identified: implementation of international standards and requirements for increasing the level of protection of national interests of the state; simplification of customs procedures to reduce the number of abuse in this area; increasing the efficiency of detection and counteraction to negative phenomena in the field of foreign trade; improving the implementation of foreign economic activities and creating optimal conditions for the participants. Conclusions. Thus, the customs policy in Ukraine has had sufficient regulatory and legislative support in recent decades. At the same time, given Ukraine’s desire to integrate into the European environment, cooperation with the World Trade Organization and other international organizations, it is necessary to increase attention to the regulatory framework of customs relations. Priority of international treaties over domestic Ukrainian legislation indicates the need to unify the legislation of Ukraine and bring it in line with international norms and standards.

Abstract:
Introduction: Referring to the knowledge about the number of Ukrainian students in Poland, James Marcia’s theory of identity development and Henri Tajfel’s theory of social identity, the authors examined how the Ukrainian minority studying in Poland describes its ethnic identity. Method: For this purpose, nine semistructural interviews were conducted, which were then subjected to a semantic narrative analysis. Results: It turned out that the respondents identify most strongly with the group of international students and students, and with their national identity in the second place. Polish nationality was cited as a group of belonging, spending time, while the Ukrainian nationality was individual, related to origin. Polish groups were positively evaluated by the respondents. The analysis also distinguished categories of differences between Poland and Ukraine, indicated by the respondents. They were: culture and religion, customs and tradition, decision-making and self-confidence, social issues, as well as mentality and science. The categories of stereotypes that were mentioned in the interviews were also identified: cheating and stealing, complaining and the similarity of nations. Conclusions: The results showed that the identity of Ukrainians is in a state of moratorium. The respondents define Ukraine as “their” country, while the strongest ones describe themselves as international students.

Abstract:
Wangel Durlow is one of 7.5 thousand Aegean Macedonians that came to Poland as a result of the Greek civil war. In his narration he mostly recounts events related to the war and mandatory resettlement from his hometown in Northern Greece seen from the child’s perspective – Mr. Durlow was 12 when he left Greece. His account provides us with information on daily life and customs of the Macedonians living in Greece, difficult beginning of his stay in Poland resulting from cultural and civilization differences between Poland and Greece as well as education and upbringing of Greek children in Poland. Despite pleas of his parents, who settled in Yugoslavia after the Greek civil war, he has not decided to leave Poland where he graduated from school and married a Polish woman. There is a long description of the first meeting with his parents which took place only after 16 years of separation. The account of travels to Yugoslavia again emphasizes cultural differences between Poland Macedonia, especially the relation of the wife of Mr. Durlow with his parents. In spite of the fact that the story of Wangel Durlow touches upon difficult and sometimes traumatic matters, he is recounting it with a sense of humor and has perspective towards it; he is emphasizing the influence of kind-hearted people – Polish teachers, his parents-in-law, who many times helped him to handle unfamiliar Polish reality.

Abstract:
Despite the enormous diversity of research within the anthropological tradition, a common unifying theme has been the “reach into otherness” (Burridge 1973:6), the venture of discovering humanity through the exploration of other cultures. From the inception of anthropology as a distinct domain of knowledge, this ethnographic curiosity has been staged within a comparative frame of reference (Hymes 1974). Early inquiries into different customs and social forms were based on the writings of European travelers, whose observations about people in distant lands provided the narrative material for constructing a plausible vision of their own world. Initially, insights into the workings of society remained implicit, hidden beneath the projected images of “otherness.” By the second half of the eighteenth century, these encounters with the unfamiliar through travel and commerce had begun to generate a conscious desire for societal self-knowledge among Europeans. The haphazard collection of ethnographic information was gradually transformed into a reflective methodology.
