Caputo, Davide. "Polanski and perception." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3183.

Abstract:
Filmmaker Roman Polanski declares in his autobiography that he was greatly influenced by renowned neuropsychologist Richard L. Gregory (1923-2010), whose work, Polanski claims, gave scientific confirmation to many of his own beliefs regarding the nature of perception. Gregory was a strong advocate for what is referred to as the ‘indirect’ theory of perception, a theoretical model that stresses the agency of cognition, specifically hypothesisation, in the act of perceiving. This analysis of Polanski’s cinema is guided by an exploration of perceptual psychology, with special attention paid to how the theory of indirect perception differs from competing, and often more intuitive, models of perception. The two main focuses of this thesis are: a) to identify the ways in which Polanski’s cinematography is actively informed by neuropsychological research on perception, and b) to discuss the various ways in which the key philosophical implications of the theory of indirect perception find expression in his cinema. My analysis will focus primarily on two (unofficial) ‘trilogies’, what I refer to as the ‘Apartment Trilogy’ of Repulsion (1965), Rosemary’s Baby (1968), and The Tenant (1976), and the ‘Investigation Trilogy’ of Chinatown (1974), Frantic (1988) and The Ninth Gate (1999). Also included are minor case studies of Knife in the Water (1962), Death and the Maiden (1994), and The Ghost (2010). This thesis hopes to demonstrate the manner in which Polanski’s cinematic engagement with perceptual psychology evolves over his career, from more psychologically intimate explorations of the perceptual mechanism via portrayals of schizophrenia in his earlier films, to more distant studies of highly proficient perceiving bodies who are nevertheless confronted with serious challenges to their perceptual (and epistemological) frameworks.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses how four directors, Orson Welles, Akira Kurosawa, Roman Polanski and Justin Kurzel, have produced a screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. It starts with a general overview of the play, focusing on the characters and on Shakespeare’s sources and it attempts to reconstruct the general atmosphere in England in the 17th century. After a quick overview on the first stage adaptations in Chapter One, the thesis turns to analyse in detail the four movies. In Chapter Two it discusses Orson Welles’s adaptation of 1948 and his dreamlike representation of the story. The third chapter focuses on Japanese director Akira Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood, also known as The Castle of The Spider’s Web, produced in Japan in 1957.The fourth and fifth chapters are dedicated respectively to Roman Polanski’s 1971 adaptation and to the latest screen version made by Justin Kurzel in 2015. A conclusion, in the end, shows how all the considerations made on all the different screen versions contribute to re-invent and reproduce the greatness of Shakespeare’s characters and that the appeal his stories have on audience demands for artists to develop always new forms of engagement with Shakespeare’s work.

Abstract:
Akira Kurosawa, Orson Welles and Roman Polanski: three very different filmmakers in whose hands Macbeth becomes three very different films. For Kurosawa, who admits himself to being obsessed with exploring the "extraordinary things that lie in human hearts," the play becomes a humanist drama concerned with man's inner evil and ambition; in the hands of Welles - whose chief agenda was always extravagance and spectacle rather than character development -Macbeth becomes a more symbolic fight between good and evil; whereas Polanski, whose major concern is often with the "confrontation of evil," presents Macbeth as a gritty, psychological thriller. All three directors have remarkable filmographies - often being nominated for and winning prestigious awards as well as experiencing professional low-points which not only counterbalance this, but at times have even seemed out of sync with the rest of their careers. They have also had remarkable personal lives, variously tinged with tragedy, which often seems to be reflected in their films. Kurosawa, born in 1910, experienced first hand the Great Kanto Earthquake, which devastated Japan in 1923, killing more than 100,000, and lived through the Second World War, which cost more than 2 million Japanese lives. He also suffered great personal loss during his lifetime - one of his brothers and one of his sisters died during childhood; and both of his older brothers died when Kurosawa was in his twenties, the younger of whom committed suicide at the age of twenty-seven. Later in life, the director's personal difficulties became so great that at one point he even attempted suicide himself. Welles was born five years after Kurosawa, although his living in America meant that he was less affected by the Second World War. In other ways however, his upbringing was unconventional and not without tragedy. When he was four his parents divorced due to 'irreconcilable differences' - the reality of which was that his father was an alcoholic and his mother had had a live-in-lover for some time. He was considered a child 'prodigy' but as a result of this special treatment was somewhat set apart from other children, had very few friends of his own age, and spent a lifetime trying to live up to these early expectations of greatness. When he was nine his mother died, and six years later so did his father - who literally drank himself to death - leaving his upbringing to his mother's lover, who would act as a secondary father figure to him for the rest of his life. Like Kurosawa, Polanski grew up in politically catastrophic times, although his life may be said to have been the most affected by tragedy and controversy. Jewish, he was born in 1933 and was living in Warsaw during the German invasion of Poland, so was no stranger to the harsh realities of war. His mother was executed in a concentration camp when he was six; years later he was to relive this loss when his pregnant wife was brutally murdered by members of a crazed cult; and when he was still recovering from this tragedy, he was arrested and charged with the rape of a 13 year-old girl. This thesis aims to explore the ways in which these different personal factors affecting Kurosawa, Welles and Polanski have contributed over the years to their films and in particular, to their interpretations of Macbeth. As the play's primary concerns are the mechanisms of evil and human iniquity - subject matter they were all, in varying degrees, personally familiar with the occurrence of these themes throughout the three directors' films will be examined alongside the representation of them in their adaptations of Macbeth.

Tylski, Alexandre. Toulouse 2, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007TOU20099.

Abstract:
Can opening title sequences (re)present the audiovisual and thematic identity of a film and of a film maker ? Can we study the work of a movie maker (Roman Polanski) through the opening credits of his film ? To answer these questions, the first part of this thesis is divided into two main chapters : one chapter synthesizes the evolutions of film credits through the history pictures, the other chapter condenses diverse writings and definitions on the roles of credits in terms of sound, image, word and strucure. In the second part, a desciption of the main corpus (the opening title sequences of R. Polanski's seventeen feature-length films) leads to a synthesis of the audiovisual devices used in these main titles to serve the style of each film (through sound, images and editing), as well as an analysis on the themes revealed by the study of these film credits

This paper makes a stylistic study of the oeuvre of the French-Polish filmmaker Roman Polanski from recurrences founded in staging – and understanding the staging as the relation between bodies and spaces in the images of a film. Starting with an analysis that identifies the penetration of reality in the Polanski’s scene, the study permeates the questions presents in the placement of the bodies in the space to reach the staging of the own body as an expressive subject.

Abstract:

Abstract:

The scope of this investigation is the conditions under which readings of Repulsion (1965), and its depicted mental illness, took place in Sweden during the censorship debates in 1965, and also how the reception was related to narration and subjectivity in the film. The reason for this is the strong reactions to the images of the main character’s inner state, and concerns about negative effects in the public, that were raised. One major concern is how the film articulates discourses through which meanings are produced; that is, how it works as social technology. My thesis is therefore structured around two levels; textual analysis and discourse analysis. In this way, I try to locate meaning and power relations both within and outside the film. My work draws mostly on Edward Branigan’s cognitive theory of narration and Michel Foucault’s thoughts on power and knowledge. I have partly deployed the approach presented by Annette Kuhn, to study the relations of power that are put into play in specific instances. To draw any conclusions I have studied Swedish newspaper articles from 1965 and a summary of the discussion within the Board of Censors. The major findings of the investigation show how the struggles to locate and regulate the meaning of Repulsion ended in the questioning of the very practice of censorship, which even seemed to suggest a moment of transition for the Swedish Board of Censors. Another important finding shows that concerns about Swedish mental care were raised; however, only regarding hospitalisation and treatment of patients and not about underlying, deeper social problems

Rafiei, Masoomeh.

Full text
Abstract:
Yasmina Reza, one of the most honored dramaturge artist internationally, does not hesitate to introduce her dramatic art on the cinematographic scene: in between the Romanesque forme and the dramatic one, the Yasmina Reza also experiments in the pictorial art. In the first instance, we have sought to focus this thesis on an analytic study of the Rezian theater to follow with her work of adaptation to the cinema. In her theatre plays, Yasmina Reza’s characters have often the same obsessions and often use the same language. Between tragedy and comedy, Reza’s dramaturgy weaves with monologue and dialogue to relate about everything and at times almost nothing. Time, space, the setting, often simple and neutral, daily objects, are used to compose the contemporary life in Reza’s plays. From this standpoint, Reza’s theatre plays are echoing with Iranian Kiarostami’s cinema.Beyond the presence of autobiographic elements and references to music in Reza’s plays, her writing is singles out specifically, alternating between silences, the not-said and the narrative, between the conversation and the dialogue. Yasmina Reza affirms enjoying using of mise en abyme in her theatre plays, thus she experiments her first movie as script writer and director of Chicas, an adaptation of Une pièce espagnole which uses many mises en abyme. Yazmina Reza continues writing with the script Le pique-nique de Lulu Kreutz directed by Didier Martiny, then with the writing of the script of Le dieu du carnage, in collaboration with Roman Polanski. In this thesis, we have attempted to study the adaptation of Reza’s plays to the cinema, their dramatization along with their characters who display their violence and anxiety in front of the screen

Abstract:
This essay traces two trends in current philosophical and theological debates concerning forgiveness. One, advocated by Vladimir Jankélévitch and Jacques Derrida, I label “impossible” forgiveness. The second, advanced by John Milbank and L. Gregory Jones, I label “communal” forgiveness. I explore and critically examine each of these positions in the first two sections of the thesis. In the last section of the thesis I examine a recent conversation amongst religious ethicists against the background of the theoretical conversations described in the first half of the essay. Bringing the theoretical conversation together with the religious ethicists’ conversation, I argue that whether or not we embrace forgiveness depends in large part in what tradition, religious or secular, we place ourselves.

Frerichs, Sabine. "Karl Polanyi and the Law of Market Society." Springer Nature, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11614-019-00328-5.

Abstract:
Karl Polanyi started his career as a doctor of law and practiced law for a while; but he did not become a legal scholar. As an economic historian, anthropologist, or sociologist, he was concerned with the relation of economy and society. But even though law is an important factor in mediating this relationship, Polanyi gave little attention to the law as such. As part of an endeavour to advance a "Polanyian" economic sociology of law, this article develops the "law of market Society" as an analytical category. For thi s purpose, three argumentative strategies are combined. First, the article draws on The Great Transformation to reconstruct the role of law in the processes of commodification and decommodification. Second, it turns to Marxist scholarship to explore the conceptual link between law and economics and to ponder to what extent law itself can become a commodity. Third, it links Polanyi's approach with American institutionalism, and Commons' work in particular, to show how the evolution of the "law of market Society" can also be understood as a collective enterprise which continuously evolves. It is argued that these perspectives complement each other and help to bring the law back in where it is missing.

Abstract:
No terceiro capítulo analisaremos as três formas de integração mediante as quais a economia, enquanto processo instituído, adquire unidade e estabilidade: reciprocidade, redistribuição e troca mercantil (exchange).
Karl Polanyi is usually associated almost exclusively to The Great Transformation. Even though it's his magnum opus, we believe there's more Polanyi beyond The Great Transformation, so that we will treat this work, but draw close attention to the place it occupies in the universe of polanyian thought. Thus, we propose with this dissertation to elaborate a comprehensive and integrated analysis of the (vast) conceptual and theoretical framework built by Polanyi. Being in presence of an author whose program of research is, par excellence, multidisciplinary, we intend also to emphasize his important contributions to the fields of history, anthropology, economics and social sciences, namely to economic sociology. This will be a theoretical study, essentially descriptive and analytical, which intends, in first place, to deal with the ideas of Karl Polanyi himself and, secondly, emphasize the influences that his work produced in some authors from the most diverse fields of social sciences. We think our work will constitute a useful and contemporary reflection since the discussions around the role of the market maintain all its relevance in a reality characterized by a capitalism ever more globalized. Also, we must not overlook the fact that Polanyi and his work have been amply marginalized by the main discourse within Portuguese academy. Thus, we will start by doing, in point 1.3, a brief biographical sketch, placing the author in the social and intellectual context of his times. In the second chapter we will deal with the conceptual and methodological issues that underlie the thought of Karl Polanyi, stressing particularly the distinction between the substantive and formal meanings of economic, the criticisms pointed at the formalist paradigm ("economistic fallacy") and placing Polanyi in the "Great Debate" between formalists and substantivists. In the third chapter we will analyze the three forms of integration by which the economy, as an instituted process, acquires unity and stability: reciprocity, redistribution and (market) exchange. We will also stress some empirical applications of the framework represented by those concepts, namely in the course of the studies developed by Polanyi in Dahomey and the Slave Trade. Finally, in the fourth chapter, we will substantiate the conceptual and methodological framework proposed by Polanyi in its better known application: The Great Transformation. In this sense, we will analyze, respectively, the process of birth, rise, apogee and posterior decline of the capitalist market economy. Let us still draw the attention of the reader to Annex A, in which we elaborate a brief digression about the relation between Polanyi and the New Economic Sociology, treating in a more detailed matter the concept of dis(embeddedness).

Abstract:
Institutionnalism is a conunter movement of american political econoly which rejects, during the period between the world wars, the principle of autonomy of economic order relative to other social dimensions. Thus. Social order is understood with a concept of institution that designates the ensemble of mental qschemas, producing the foreseeable inflexibility of individual behaviors. Mitchell, veblen and commons are usually considered to be the founders of this school of thought. Nevertheless, polanyi is included in this school to the extent that his approach enriches institutionalism through comparative economics. These authors advance the hypothesis that debt is an essential social interaction. The system of debt creation and release (i. E. Monetary practices) therefore becomes a fundamental institution of the economy. Finally. They emphasize the importance the futurity and power relations for explaining crisis

Abstract: In an effort to pick the substratum of the contemporary capitalism, this thesis intends to identify the ways how the disappearance of the rules and of the borders leaves the capital given to their own movement laws. In that sense, it proposes that an approximate picture of the contemporary capitalism can be drawn through the concept of de-ruled economy (Introduction). The explored argument is what the construction of productive international circuits and, mainly, financial of capital valorization answers for the dismantle of the global 'pattern' of development inherited from the postwar period. So that the financial wealth, exacerbated by both the innovations of the financial instruments and the deregulation of the markets that characterize the economic policies in last decades, at the time in that it presides the capital valorization logic, it doesn't do more than to turn clear the capitalism prime objective: the expansion of the abstract wealth. This central and distinctive characteristic of the capitalism is, under different theoretical perspectives, underlined by Marx, Keynes and Polanyi, authors that analyze the foundations of the capitalist wealth and they refuse the classic legal profession concerning the market self-regulation capacity. Due to that, we defended that the resource to their contributions (respectively, Chapters I, II and III) it allows recovering the theoretical elements that we considered basic to place the theme of the recent transformations inside an immanent logic to the de-ruled economy, so that the economical history of the capitalism in the last room of the century XX is the one of a world that loses their references and it slides for the instability and appealing crises, in the exact measure in that it overflows the disappearance of the rules and of the borders that discipline the capital. It is inside that analytical and theoretical perspective that we tried to map the structural flaws of the system erected in Bretton Woods, whose institutional architecture answers, largely, for the social arrangement from the second postwar to the explosion of the keynesian consensus crisis (Chapter IV).Equally, we appreciated the transformations that happen in the sequence of the rupture of Bretton Woods system, with intention of apprehend the most important determinations of the new tensions that are unfolded until the current crisis (Chapter V), with what we treated of the coordination experiments that marked the last room of the century XX with the intention of marking that, from that rupture, the system is under the aegis of a de-ruled coordination. The recurrence of financial crises that then is installed turns explicit the exacerbation of the de-ruled economy intrinsic instability tendency. After having approached some of the recent contributions of the economic literature on the financial crises, we identified, in the proposals of reordering the international financial architecture adopted to the canonical thought, the search of the same principles based on the self-regulation, in contrast with the proposals that leave of the recognition of that instability. Then, we pointed the vectors that the institution of a 'new international financial architecture' it could hold, not without before to detach the presence of important constraints imposed by a reality marked by the supremacy of the liberalized and deregulated finances. The determinant of a such reality, as we understood (Conclusion), are present in Marx, Keynes and Polanyi, whose contributions supply the elements that allow to draw an approximate picture of the contemporary capitalism, that whose accurate expression is, according to the developed thesis, the de-ruled economy

Nesse sentido, Polanyi desafia teorias estabelecidas, corrobora outras e complementa ainda outras.
Intergovernmental organizations are important international institutions that operate in global governance. Studies of these organizations are connected to highly distinct disciplines and intellectual traditions. Notwithstanding the diversity of these studies, however, their links to the intellectual legacy of Karl Polanyi are weak, which appears to be contradictory, given his importance for the Social Sciences in general and the rich reflections that his principal work, The Great Transformation, provides about international phenomena. Thus, the problem that guides this research is born out of the supposition that the thinking of this intellectual provides new theoretical positions capable of contributing new perspectives to our understanding of intergovernmental organizations. The research problem is thus: what are the possible intellectual and theoretical contributions of Karl Polanyi’s thinking to our understanding of the phenomena of intergovernmental organizations? The research therefore comes under the thematic areas of Global Governance and International Organizations and its theme is Karl Polanyi’s contributions to thinking about intergovernmental organizations. This work may be specifically justified by the lack of studies based on Polanyi aiming to reflect on intergovernmental organizations, as well as the analytical potential that this intellectual appears to provide to the question posited here. This is a theoretical, qualitative study for both exploratory (since it seeks to extend knowledge about the relationship between Polanyi and studies about intergovernmental organizations) and explanatory (in that is seeks to provide new explanations about such organizations based on Polanyi) purposes. The research method was principally bibliographic and sought to undertake a critical and meticulous reading of extensive bibliographical material including books, articles, theses and dissertations. In order to achieve the proposed objectives, the research is divided into three chapters. The first chapter presents the wider context in which intergovernmental organizations operate and explores the teachings of Karl Polanyi contained in The Great Transformation. The second chapter aims to explore and reflect on the main approaches and theories of International Relations that deal, however indirectly, with intergovernmental organizations. Finally, the third chapter seeks to reflect on the possible theoretical support that Polanyi may provide to our understanding of the phenomena of intergovernmental organizations. The research concludes that, when we address Polanyi through the different approaches of International Relations dealing with intergovernmental organizations, there is manifest potential to shed new light on such organizations. In this sense, Polanyi challenges certain established theories, corroborates some and complements others.

Abstract:
This thesis is build up on the idea that state could be described as an institution of the economic process, which imbues it with certain degree of endurance and protects it from the instability and uncertainty of the free markets. If this idea could be proved, then the mainstream tendency to exclude state from the realm of economics and leave the governance of the economic process solely to self-regulating markets will appear to be a fallacy based on the myth of liberalism. Only after this could be achieved, state could get its proper place in the existing economic system and a solution may be found to the impasse into which societies have been dragged by the free market order that is defended jauntily by liberal economists.

Abstract:
The Polanyi Equilibrium Theory proposes that a characteristic curve exist which can, after the application of certain abscissa scale factors, describe the adsorption of all compounds on a given carbon. A study was undertaken, using published data from several sources on a variety of compounds and carbons to challenge the most fundamental aspects of the Polanyi Adsorption Equilibrium Theory. Its effectiveness as a predictive model was tested by constructing characteristic curves and comparing the observed isotherm data to the Polanyi predictions. The results support the existence of the characteristic curve. However, in several instances, experimental data was required to accurately determine the required scale factors. Data from several compounds indicates that these scale factors can be estimated from a single data point. A comparison of predicted to observed scale factors indicates that polarizability is effective in providing only an approximation of the true abscissa scale factors. An additional adjustment for adsorbate density is required to correct for the theorized inefficient packing of the solids in the carbon pores. However, after these empirically determined scale factors are applied, an accurate depiction of the data results.

Abstract:
For long, the idea of development had been linked to the expansion of the capitalist ways of production as well as their consequences as to the technical and riches accumulation progress. The contemporaneous debate, however, has rescued Karl Polanyi's principles and themes. This has been done both during and after the second world war, what has evidenced the update and how important the rediscovery of his thought is. This study aims to analyze the city development in Brazil from Karl Polanyi's theoretical conception. To do so, a rereading on the social coordination principles which were evidenced by Polanyi (1947; 2012a; 2012b) has been taken so that these principles become represented by four dimensions: State, market, sympathy and subsistence which form the multidimensional approach. Through the multidimensional approach, the polanyian city development index (PCDI) has been structured. This one has two outstanding aims: a) allowing the visualization on the brazilian city economical organization from the plural perspective on the economy which was inspired by the polanyian theory; b) verifying how the city human development index (CHDI) appears in cities where polanyian features are strong, expressed through the dimensions which form the multidimensional approach. The found results show that: a) according to the analyzed concepts, development in Brazilian cities are quite incipient; b) there is a direct and positive relation between PCDI and CHDI. The cities, where PCDI are better, also show a stronger CHDI, what reveals that economical plurality, somehow, influences social and economical features of the development progress which are wished and hoped.

Deacon, Lachlan. "The Great Transformation in EU Cohesion Policy: Re-Embedding Market Economy." Thesis, University of Sydney, 2020. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/24274.

Full text
Abstract:
The global market economy can advance human and social development in some ways, fostering productivity and growth, and yet is harmful to it in others, producing instability, inequality and ecological destruction. Engaging with Karl Polanyi, the thesis argues that the difference is found in how the market system is instituted. The market economy generates negative effects through the fictitious commodification of labour, land and money, but so too does an ad hoc ‘counter-movement’ against this, as it ends up impairing the system overall. I therefore explore how the market economy might instead be guided by broad socio-political institutions. Cohesion Policy in the European Union exemplifies this by supporting European regional development. Its budget of €346 billion for 2014–2020 has provided European public investment in a range of areas – employment, enterprises, environment, infrastructure, research and innovation and so on. By instituting this support at the supranational level, across the EU, Cohesion Policy is able to boost the union’s less developed regions while avoiding tensions between national economic policies. Therefore, the thesis examines the extent to which EU Cohesion Policy has produced advances in regional development and has enabled a more stable socio-economic system within the regional political economy of Europe.

Abstract:
The Christian church proclaims that God has made himself known. It is the task of a doctrine of revelation to offer an account of this claim. In this thesis we take Karl Barth's doctrine of the Word of God as our point of departure. In critical engagement with it we address weaknesses in Barth's work and suggest some corrective strategies. In particular, we deal with his tendency to understate human participation in the event in which God makes himself known. In attempting to develop the doctrine we draw substantially upon the epistemological work of Michael Polanyi, a philosopher who articulated, with considerable clarity, the forms of participation out of which knowledge arises. One of the most innovative aspects of Polanyi's work is his theory of tacit knowledge. In this he demonstrates how our conceptual understanding arises out of our 'indwelling' of knowledge upon which we depend but can articulate only in part, if at all. This knowledge, or 'know-how', is established, in various ways, in and through our participation in life contexts. We reflect upon our participation in some aspects of the ecclesial context, with which we are primarily concerned, including sacramental practice and the place of music in worship. The thesis explores how Polanyi's insights illuminate the task of articulating a doctrine of revelation in which human participation is appropriately acknowledged. The last chapter deals with the question of imagination and makes explicit some themes which have been implicit throughout the thesis. We suggest that our participation in revelation is necessarily imaginative, and that God, in making himself known, appeals to our imagination. The thesis does not seek to draw the themes it explores to a conclusion, but suggests trajectories of reflection in which we can further explore our responsive and imaginative participation in revelation.

Abstract:
The article explores the potential of a Polanyian analysis for overcoming the current Manichean opposition between cosmopolitan globalizers and reactionary nationalists. For long, Karl Polanyi has inspired socio-economic thinking in different ways. First, his reflections on the end of the first period of globalization in the 1930s offer insights for analysing the current political-economic situation. Furthermore, Polanyi contributes to an institutional analysis and utopian thinking towards a civilization for all. His approach enables a combination of a critique of current neoliberal globalization as a renewed version of the "liberal Utopia" with a cultural and ecological critique of capitalism as a mode of production and living. In this respect, Karl Polanyi may be contrasted to Friedrich Hayek, both contemporaries of Red Vienna, an ambitious project of local socialism as a step towards a "good life for all". The social and cultural struggles in Vienna during the 1920s and 1930s offer insights for current confrontations worldwide, but especially in Brazil where the reformist attempts of civilizing capitalism where confronted with severe opposition. Instead of the false polarization between globalization and nationalism, policies "for the select few" are opposed to policies "for all". Finally, Polanyi's reflections will be used to shed light onto the current impasse resulting from the illegitimate deposition of president Dilma Rousseff.

Abstract:
The thesis begins with a critical comparison of the philosophy of Michael Polanyi, John Macmurray, Karl Popper and Albert Einstein. This serves to highlight several important features of Michael Polanyi's philosophy which are of relevance. From this preliminary discussion of Michael Polanyi's philosophy it becomes clear that certain ultimate beliefs underly all scientific work - a belief in order, a belief in its contingent singular nature, and a belief that we can know that order. The ultimate beliefs found in the scientific community are paralleled by a similar set of beliefs in the Christian community, and this community is itself ordered by principles which this thesis would maintain are equivalent to those found in t The prayers and worship of the Christian community, by which we come to know the divine order, are then compared and contrasted with scientific research, by which we come to know nature's order. This leads on to a discussion of miracles.

The informal economy composes the world of work of all the capitalist societies, in lesser or greater extent. In Brazil, historically it is observed that this phenomenon has always been very broad, mostly motivated by and resulting from socio-economic, legal and political context. Due to national idiosyncrasies, since the advent of the labour market in the country, this situation exists in several panoramas and various hues, hindering a better overall performance of the Brazilian economy and denying opportunities for individual and social development over time. Thus, and through the prism of Social and Labour Economics, the aim of this work is to analyze the main conjunctural and structural factors of informality observed in the national labour market in the interregnum 1980-2012, showing the dimension of this problem and exposing their economic and institutional roots, in order to contribute with new elements to the discussion of informality at the national level. The central hypothesis of this research is that high degree of labour informality in Brazil remains essentially – even if subject to historical specificities – at the level of mentalities of the different agents, meaning that before having a national labour market with a high degree of labour informality has been a highly informal Brazilian society. The institution of “informal work” remains an embedded habit even when a change in the socio-economic order occurs, which precludes much of the population access to formal and decent work (according to ILO definition). It is imperative a greater effectiveness of laws and institutional improvements accompanied by coordination and “political will”, grounded by the growing awareness of civil society with regard to the importance of formal work and the evils of the informal work for its citizens and for the nation as a whole. Beyond to the economic and legal aspects, it is suggested as a possible alternative to reduce the degree of labour informality a more consistent consideration of the cultural, historical and behavioral backgrounds together with the embedded social habits that affect and drive them. These last ones are the axes that guide the process of individual and social development. In this sense, this study (of descriptive and analytical nature) is based on systemic and multidisciplinary theories developed by Karl Paul Polanyi and Amartya Kumar Sen, interpreted as artificers of a dignified life, as well as endorsers of the “re-embeddedness” of the economy in the society and, by analogy, the “desembeddedness” of the informality institutionally rooted in the Brazilian society. This will take place as a consequence of the expansion of the instrumental and substantive freedoms in a sort of “circular and cumulative causation” applied to the issue of informality, with the “highly desirable side effect” of socio-economic development. The main contributions of this research emerged precisely from the theoretical conceptions of these two authors along with a convergent nexus established among the Brazilian economy, its institutional unfolding process and the informality in the national labour market during the studied period.

Malin, Stephanie Ann. "The Paradox of Uranium Development: A Polanyian Analysis of Social Movements Surrounding the Piñon Ridge Uranium Mill." DigitalCommons@USU, 2011. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/1022.

Full text
Abstract:
Renewal of nuclear energy development has been proposed as one viable solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and impacts of climate change. This discussion became concrete as the first uranium mill proposed since the end of the Cold War, the Piñon Ridge Uranium Mill, received state permits in January 2011 to process uranium in southwest Colorado’s Paradox Valley. Though environmental contamination from previous uranium activity caused one local community to be bulldozed to the ground, local support for renewed uranium activity emerges among local residents in communities like Nucla, Naturita, and Bedrock, Colorado. Regionally, however, a coalition of organized, oppositionbased grassroots groups fights the decision to permit the mill. Combined, these events allow social scientists a natural laboratory through which to view social repercussions of nuclear energy development. In this dissertation, I use a Polanyian theoretical framework to analyze social, political-economic, and environmental contexts of social movements surrounding PR Mill. My overarching research problem is: How might Polanyian double movement theory be applied to and made empirically testable within the social and environmental context of uranium development? I intended this analysis to inform energy policy debates regarding renewable energy. In Chapter 1, I found various forms of social dislocation lead to two divergent social movement outcomes. Economic social dislocation led to strong mill support among most local residents, according to archival, in-depth interview, and survey data. On the other hand, residents in regional communities experienced two other types of social dislocation – another kind of economic dislocation, related to concern over boombust economies, and environmental health dislocations related to uranium exposure, creating conditions for a regional movement in opposition to PR Mill. In Chapter 2, I focus on regulations and find that two divergent social movements – a support movement locally and a countermovement against the mill regionally – emerge also as a result of strong faith in regulations, regulators, and Energy Fuels countered by marked distrust in regulations, regulators, and Energy Fuels, respectively. In Chapter 3, I advance Polanyi’s double movement theory by comparing different emergent social movements surrounding uranium, showing that historically different circumstances surrounding uranium can help create conditions for divergent social movements.

Abstract:
Biomass valorization is an interesting alternative to fossil resources, which is frequently performed via heterogeneous catalysis. Designing new catalysts is a challenging task that can be significantly accelerated in silico. However, biomass molecules are often complex and highly oxygenated, hence rendering calculations more difficult and time consuming. Among these compounds, polyols are particularly important. We developed linear relations of the Brønsted-Evans-Polanyi (BEP) type from the DFT study of C-H or O-H bond dissociation elementary steps for a family of monoalcohol molecules on metallic catalysts (Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt). Such relations aim at predicting activation energies from reaction energies. The accuracy of the obtained linear energy models is better than 0.10 eV on the sampling set. Then, the relations were applied for the prediction of the dehydrogenation elementary steps of glycerol, chosen as a prototype of polyalcohols, with an accuracy better than 0.10 eV and with a systematic error around ±0.10 eV for Rh. Keeping in mind that the main difference between glycerol and monoalcohols comes from intramolecular H-bonds present in the former, we designed linear relations for water-assisted dehydrogenation of monoalcohols. These new relations allowed us to improve the prediction on glycerol and to eliminate the systematic deviation in the case of OH bond breaking. Even if in this study we focused on glycerol dehydrogenation, similar methods may be applied to other polyols with other chemical reactions, and considerably speed up the computational design of solid catalysts. This work paves the way for the development of novel numerical techniques to address the issue of biomass conversion.

Leveille, Lise-Anne. Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/24930.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The overall aim of this thesis has been to investigate the meaning of the capability to move in order to identify and describe this capability from the perspective of the one who moves in relation to specific movements. It has been my ambition to develop ways to explicate, and thereby open up for discussion, what might form an educational goal in the context of movements and movement activities in the school subject of physical education and health (PEH). In this study I have used a practical epistemological perspective on capability to move, a perspective that challenges the traditional distinction between mental and physical skills as well as between theoretical and practical knowledge. Movement actions, or ways of moving, are seen as expressions of knowing. In order to explore an understanding of the knowing involved in specific ways of moving, observations of  actors’ ways of moving and their own experiences of moving were brought together. Informants from three different arenas took part: from PEH in upper secondary school, from athletics and from free-skiing. The results of the analyses suggest it is possible to describe practitioners’ developed knowing as a number of specific ways of knowing that are in turn related to specific ways of moving. Examples of such specific ways of moving may be discerning and modifying one’s own rotational velocity and navigating one’s (bodily) awareness. Additionally, exploring learners’ pre-knowing of a movement ‘as something’ may be fruitful when planning the teaching and learning of capability to move. I have suggested that these specific ways of knowing might be regarded as educational goals in PEH. In conducting this study, I have also had the ambition to contribute to the ongoing discussion of what ‘ability’ in the PEH context might mean. In considering specific ways of knowing in moving, the implicit and taken-for-granted meaning of ‘standards of excellence’ and ‘sports ability’can be discussed, and challenged.

Abstract:
The proposal has been put forward that ecological economics seek to become substantive economics (Gerber and Scheidel 2018). This raises important issues about the content and direction of ecological economics. The division of economics into either substantive or formal derives from the work of Karl Polanyi. In developing his ideas Polanyi employed a definition from Menger and combined this with Tönnies theory of historical evolution. In this paper I explore why the resulting substantive vs. formal dichotomy is problematic. In particular the article exposes the way in which trying to impose this dichotomy on history of economic thought and epistemology leads to further false dichotomies. Besides Polanyi, the positions of other important thinkers informing social ecological economics (SEE) are discussed including Neurath, Kapp and Georgescu-Roegen. The aim is to clarify the future direction of ecological economics and the role, in that future, of ideas raised under the topic of substantive economics.

Richards, Richard Roberto. "Short Food Supply Chains: Expectations and Reality." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2015. http://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/415.

Full text
Abstract:
Alternative food systems (AFSs) are so defined because they purport to challenge a value or ameliorate a negative impact of the dominant conventional food system (CFS). Short food supply chains (SFSCs) are a type of AFS whose alterity is defined by socially proximal economic exchanges that are embedded in and regulated by social relationships. This relational closeness is argued to have benefits with respect to economic, environmental, and social sustainability. However, it would be a mistake to assume that AFSs and CFSs are paradigmatically differentiated or that their structures engender particular outcomes. The first article traces a misguided attempt to find indicators of success for farms participating in short food supply chains. The effort was misguided, because in designing the original study there was an assumption that producers participating in these AFSs shared similar goals, values, and definitions of success. The true diversity of these variables was discovered through the analysis of eighteen semi-structured interviews with Burlington and Montpelier area farmers who participate in SFSCs. This diversity motivated an exploration of the origins, common applications, and recent academic skepticism regarding assumptions of the relationship between certain food systems structures and broader food systems outcomes. The second article undertakes to develop a framework for exploring the actual motivations of SFSCs farmers and challenging common AFS assumptions. A framework that differentiates motivations guided by formal and substantive rationality is used to code the aforementioned data. Common themes amongst the responses are discussed demonstrating that producer motivations for participating in AFSs can be diverse, contradictory, and subject to change.

Bergman, Cecilia, and Dijana Todorovic. "Hur skapar man kontinuitet i ideella organisationer : En fallstudie av Riksförbundet Sveriges Unga Katoliker." Thesis, Södertörn University College, School of Business Studies, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-2249.

Full text
Abstract:

Purpose:  The purpose of the essay is give the association Sweden's Young Catholics recommendations how to maintain the contingency within the organization. The recommendations arises through analysis about how Sweden's Young Catholics can preserve the tacit knowledge that the employees and volunteers have, and which factors motivates to volunteer leadership.

Methology:  For this case study we have used a qualitative method with a touch of a quantitative method. We did two interviews with employees and one through e-mail with another employee. We also did a minor poll with volunteers in the Stockholm region in Sweden's Young Catholics.

Theoretical perspective:  This chapter starts with an overview over different definitions of tacit knowledge and there after a theory about motivation. This chapter illustrates theorys by Polanyi, Nonaka, and Herzberg.

Empiric: This chapter declares material and interviews made for this thesis. Material about the organization from the website for Sweden's Young Catholics, the interviews about tacit knowledge and the poll about motivation.

Analysis: In this section we analyse all the material and interviews collected in the empiric section with help of the theories from the theoretical chapter. The interviews with the tacit knowledge and the poll with help of Herzberg's theory.

Conclusion:  The most important conclusion is that Sweden's Young Catholics should keep their tacit knowledge by developing a symbolic organizational language in shape of reference guides. The communication in the organization also has to improve and Sweden's Young Catholics should have a practical part in their leadership course which also can serve as a transfer of tacit knowledge. Other conclusions are that the most important motivation factors is promotion and performance according to both employees and volunteers. Although Sweden's Young Catholics should take both motivation factors and hygiene factors in their consideration, because they are both important for keeping the contingency in the organization.
