Atomic-resolution electron microscopic surface profile images of sapphire are reported for the first time. Comparison of experimental images with computer simulations, leads to the realization that aluminium and oxygen atom surface terminations may be distinguished, for both neutral and charged surfaces. We demonstrate a method of improving a seed sentiment lexicon developed on essay data by using a pivot-based paraphrasing system for lexical expansion coupled with sentiment profile enrichment using crowdsourcing. Profile enrichment alone yields up to 15% improvement in the accuracy of the seed lexicon on 3-way sentence-level sentiment polarity classification of essay data. Abstract A study of the spectral analysis and two-dimensional modelling of magnetic data collected along the track of 200 km traversing the southern part of the Gulf of Mannar indicates the presence of an anomalous body within the basement. The total field magnetic anomaly along the track is well explained by variations in the topogrphy of the anomalous body of normal polarity and uniform magnetisation. The model shows a topographic relief of about 6 km. The presence of volcanic vents in this area suggests that the anomalous body could be more basic in nature having high susceptibilty values.

The aim of this thesis is to present a useful tool to study the different electrical quantities and their behavior during a fast voltage polarity reversal in HVDC cable systems. The tool has been developed in the MATLAB environment, where it is possible to run different numerical simulations and to obtain accurate results, provided the correct model has been used. Recently large second-order nonlinearities associated with intersubband transitions have been reported in asymmetric AlGaAs/GaAs quantum well structures.1,2 In this paper we report what we believe to be the first observation of second harmonic generation (SHG) due to intersubband transitions in AlInAs/GaInAs coupled quantum wells.
