Full textThe aim of this work is to evaluate the behaviour of two asphaltic mixtures prepared with different kinds of asphalts, one with conventional asphalt (CAP 20) and the other one with modified asphalt by addition of polymers (BETUFLEX B 80/60), from the results of the two different tests, the Marshall test and the static creep test. The latter test allows to estimate the asphaltic mixture resistance against the formation of the rut depth or the permanent deformation. The results of the Marshall did not allow to conclude if there was improvement in the performance of the asphaltic mixtures due to the addition of polymers, excluding only one feature, the stability, that showed always greater to the mixture made with the conventional asphalt, independently of the content used. As far as the results from the static creep test are concerned, it is possible to conclude that there is a tendency of improvement in the behaviour of the mixtures prepared with asphalt modified with polymer.

Full textIn this work an evaluation of the compatibilization of the Polypropylene (PP)/Polyamide-6 (PA6) blends and Polyamide-6/Ethylene-Propylene Rubber (EPR) blends was carried out. A funcionalized PP and a funcionalized EPR were used as compatibilizer agent in the first and second systems, respectively. The binary blends PP/PA6 were prepared in the proportions 70/30 and the ternary mixtures PP/PP-MA/PA6 in the proportions 65/5/30, both in Haake Rheomex PTW Extruder and Haake Rheomex CTW100p Extruder. The binary blend PA6/EPR was prepared in the proportion 70/30 and the ternary blend PA6/EPR-MA/EPR in the proportion 70/5/25, using a Haake Polylab Rheometer with internal mixer module. The compatibilizer agent EPR-MA was prepared in a Haake Rheomex PTW Extruder functionalized with 1 wt % of maleic anhydride (MA) as grafting agent and 0.1% of Luperox as initiator. The obtained blends were characterized for Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMTA), roational rheometry and mechanical properties measurements. When necessary the significance of the differences among samples was statically analyzed using a t test. The results showed that the addition of the compatibilizer agents PP-MA and EPRMA provokes an alteration in the morphology of the blends, increasing miscibility and reducing the size of the dispersed phase particles. Besides, the dynamic-mechanical thermal and rheological analyses indicate interaction between the phases caused by the compatibilization. The mechanical analysis of the blends PP/PA6 showed a better performance of the ternary blends in comparison to the binary blends.

Full textIn this work, membranes based on sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) containing benzimidazole derivatives and phosphotungstic acid (HPW) were developed and evaluated for potential use in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). PEEK was sulfonated with sulfuric acid to promote functionalization in the polymer backbone by insertion of sulfonic acid goups, that are responsile for the proton conduction in water media. Benzimidazole derivatives synthesized from glycols and n-alcane dibromides were used in the membrane composition in order to improve the protonic conduction in low umidity conditions. HPW was also introduced in the membrane composition, with the aim of increase the proton conductivity. The membranes were evaluated concerning the thermal stability, mechanical properties, water and ethanol swelling and proton conductivity in water. Results shown that properties and performance depends on membrane’s composition. Higher sulfonation degree on SPEEK matrix increase the proton conductivity and also increase the water and ethanol swelling. Benzimidazole derivatives promotes reduction in the water/ethanol swelling, but also reduces the proton conductivity in water at high umidity. Adiction of HPW in the membrane composition promotes higher proton conductivity in umidified conditions and reduces the thermal stability of the polymer backbone.

Full textLiquid crystal polymers (LCPs) and commercial polystyrene blends are known to be immiscible. The literature reports improvements on miscibility through polymer modification. Mixtures of amorphous isotropic polymers with low molar mass are more miscible than similar blends with high molar mass polymers. In this work, blends of synthesized polystyrenes with low molar masses (Mv = 11000 e 70000 g/mol) and commercial polystyrene (Mv = 223000 g/mol), and synthesized thermotropic liquid crystal polymer poly(methyl-1,4-dioxiphenylene-4,4\'-dicarbonyl- 1,10-dibenzoyl-oxydecane), (Mn = 9500 g/mol, Mw = 24000 g/mol, Mw/Mn = 2.5) were prepared by solubilization in chloroform and co-precipitation. The presence or absence of miscibility in the samples were studied by viscometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanic thermal analysis (DMTA). The results are compared to the morphology observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Quantitative analysis of the micrographs of the blends by SEM showed that the blends with PS 11000 g/mol showed diameters of the PS particles in the range 27-52 nanometers at all compositions, forming a micro-heterogeneous structure. In contrast, the blends formed with PS Mw = 70000 g/mol showed co-continuous structure for the blends, confirming the immiscibility as observed by DSC and DMTA .
