Abstract:
At the moment, a small amount of research has been carried out in the Russian literature devoted to the analysis of the ideological foundations and concepts of the development of the Polish eastern policy. The purpose of this article is to study the key ideas of the eastern policy of the Polish state and their further evolution before the emergence of the Eastern Partnership in 2008. As sources, the author used materials in Russian, English and Polish, which made it possible to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the eastern policy of the Polish state. The author of the article concludes that the Polish eastern policy has deep historical roots and is based on a fundamental ideological basis. The article provides an analysis of the «Jagiellonian» and «Piast» concepts of the development of the Polish state. The key features of Poland's foreign policy strategy in the East, which are relevant nowadays, are associated with the ideas of Józef Piłsudski and Roman Dmowski - the idea of messianism and a civilizational mission. Today there is a revival of old concepts, the so-called «Prometheism 2.0». Studying the historical foundations of Polish politics will help in analyzing Poland's current foreign policy strategy.

Abstract:
The aim of my article is to present the Polish perspective on the state of the art of comparative studies of contemporary Polish and Lithuanian literature. In my article, I discuss difficulties that contribute to the niche status of the field as well as phenomena that positively influence its development. First, I touch upon issues of hermeticity of the Lithuanian language and complicated relations between Poland and Lithuania. Then, I focus on the availability of Lithuanian literature in Poland and mention publications concerning it, written in Polish. I also emphasize the significance of translation endeavors. Next, I enumerate centers that conduct comparative studies of Polish and Lithuanian literature and introduce scholars-comparatists and their publications. I also present the accomplishments of some figures whose activity was significant for building Polish-Lithuanian dialogue on the level of literature and literary studies. I enumerate initiatives that provide new possibilities for the development of this field of studies and describe institutions which promote Lithuanian culture in Poland. In the end, I present possible directions for comparative studies of contemporary Polish and Lithuanian writings.

Abstract:
Service activity, which is an essential part of modern economy, is constantly changing. The changing economic reality also involves changes in research orientations. Changes in the subject of interest in the literature related to geography of services are a reflection of the changes taking place in services. Economic changes, as well as technological and civilisation progress, result in the emergence of new directions of research, as well as the disappearance of some of the existing ones, which in current circumstances are losing their relevance. The beginnings of geography of services as a distinctive scientific discipline date back to the 1970s. Previously, service research was part of the field of settlement research. The 1970s brought an increased interest in services, which initiated the process of crystallising geography of services, manifested in both theoretical and methodological work. The article discusses current changes in Polish geography of services, in particular its new trends and research directions.

Abstract:
The thesis seeks to account for the development of the Party's views of the contemporary novel and its expectations of the form after Socialist Realism (1949-1955). The course of development of Party requirements of the form is traced from 1959, when the Party announced its new operative ideology at the Third Congress, to its last major statement of demands at the Party Writers' Conference of February 1985. One of the salient features of the thesis is the attempt to reconstruct Party thinking on the novel through access to hitherto unknown materials for the period from the Party and Censorship Office archives. This enables the lack of specificity inherent in the Party's formulations after the demise of Socialist Realism to be countered, and a more definite account of the progression of Party thinking to be delineated. Chapter 1 defines, firstly, the administrative structures within which writers were required to operate - the Writers' Union, Ministry of Culture, the Central Committee's Cultural Department and, finally, the Censorship Office. Secondly, it considers the positive mechanisms devised by the state to encourage novel-writing on favoured topics, and thirdly, the aims of the Party's cultural programme. Chapter 2 provides a general cultural background of the period, describing the development of the term 'committed literature', which was most frequently used by writers and politicians in their deliberations on the nature and direction literature was to take. This development was influenced by the increasing restrictions which the authorities placed upon writers' freedom of interpretation. These concerned, above all, the problem of alienation in socialist society. Chapter 3-5 discuss six works in relation to the administrative structures and the major political issues of the period. In Chapter 3, the question of the Party's initial definition of the extent of freedoms is considered in relation to Roman Bratny's Szczes lwi, torturowani (1959) and Jerzy Putrament's Pasierbowie (1963).

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is contemporary Polish playwriting after Poland's accession to the European Union in 2004. From a broad reading of plays by many new writers, four playwrights were selected for study on the basis of prominence and artistic merit: Pawel Demirski, Dorota Maslowska, Malgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk and Przemys law Wojcieszek. Their plays were studied as texts and in performance, and twelve main plays became the focus of closer analysis. The thesis identifies and examines three major concurrent themes in the works of these playwrights. Remembering versus forgetting the past is discussed through the lens of selected aspects of memory studies, including Nora's lieux de mémoire, Hirsch's postmemory and Assman's mnemohistory. The playwrights are shown to share an endorsement of the de-politicisation of collective memory and to advocate a cessation of the passing down of trauma to post-war generations. The human body is highlighted as another concurrent thematic concern and is illuminated by certain tenets of Catholic doctrine as well as Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology. The playwrights' rejection of the tabooisation of the body is demonstrated and the shared notion of the body as both sentient and unifying is exemplified. Social marginalisation is examined as the final concern, with an emphasis on the notion of the 'other', particularly in relation to socio-economic status, sexuality, and religious beliefs. The plays are shown to support and promote a rejection of the myth of homogeneity in favour of openness to diversity. Major dramatic techniques are then closely examined. It is demonstrated that the plays share traits with Lehmann's theory of postdramatic theatre, including a rejection of Aristotelian unities. Key commonalities are evidenced, particularly comedy, bad language, intertextualities with the outside world, and an engagement with Polish social realities. The playwrights' approach to the spectator as a socio-political being is shown to be of paramount importance.

Police literature was born in an environment of technical revolution that changed the everyday city life profoundly. The modification affected the relation between society and art, and it also created conditions for the development of the press - the first place the police genre was to be published. During these almost two centuries, the ideology in police literature has modified. This research examines those changes so as to demonstrate similitudes between contemporary sensibility and the cultural context that allowed the birth of the tragedy, according to Nietzsche s thesis. By comparing the poetic effect in tragedy to that in police literature, and by considering their relations with rationalism, this study proposes that there is a close proximity between the two genres. Within this perspective, the police narrative is analyzed as a supporting prop in contemporary fiction.

Abstract:
The present thesis provides an analysis of language policy and language contact in present-day Barcelona. On the one hand, the effectiveness of the implementation of Catalan-medium education in Catalonia will be critically evaluated. On the other hand, Catalan-Castilian bilinguals' awareness of non-normative instances of language contact will be assessed. This thesis brings these two strands together, in order to paint an accurate picture of the current Catalan sociolinguistic situation. The 1983 Llei de Normalització Lingüística had numerous consequences, including the introduction of Catalan as the chief medium of education in Catalonia. Such legislation had many aims, not least to 'ensure Catalan language competence'. But to what extent has this been successful? Furthermore, the varieties of Catalan and Castilian in Barcelona are characterised by centuries of language contact, which has resulted in the incursion of numerous, non-normative linguistic items and constructions in both languages. To what extent are speakers aware of such non-normative language? Moreover, how do these questions concerning language policy and language contact bear upon one another? This thesis is therefore looking at the consequences of language policy and of language contact. With the aid of an innovative, three-dimensional model of sociolinguistic phenomena, it will be shown that these are maximally differentiated, yet clearly related. These will be termed top-down phenomena and bottom-up phenomena respectively. This is to be tested using a unique fieldwork experiment whereby fifty bilingual Catalan-Castilian Barcelonians of two different generations (one educated in Catalan, the other in Castilian, due to different linguistic policies) are asked to identify instances of non-normative language contact in two prepared texts. This work will allow conclusions to be drawn regarding the effectiveness of Catalan medium education, as well as offering insight into the nature of how we examine issues of language policy and language contact.

Abstract:
Rozprawa doktorska pt. We wstępie autorka przedstawia krytykę literatury etnicznej tworzonej w Stanach Zjednoczonych i główne postulaty teoretyków, które pojawiły w obrębie literatury amerykańskiej w ciągu ostatniego półwiecza.

Abstract:
In this paper, Kait Spong examines alternative practices of mothering that are strategic nature, heavily analyzing Patricia Hill Collins’ concepts of “othermothering” and “preservative love” as applied to Toni Morrison’s 1987 novel, Beloved and Harriet Jacob’s 1861 slave narrative, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Using literary analysis as a vehicle, Spong then applies these West African notions of motherhood to a modern context by evaluating contemporary social movements such as Black Lives Matter where black mothers have played a prominent role in making public statements against systemic issues such as police brutality, heightened surveillance, and the prison industrial complex.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter locates children’s rights in the context of global social governance. Social policy literature has hitherto neglected the centrality of child protection and children’s rights to many key areas of social governance such as education and healthcare. The chapter traces the history of children’s rights as a distinct sphere in international law from the first recognition of the special status of children, to the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), to the growth of the contemporary complex International Organization (IO) landscape. Children’s rights enjoy growing visibility and relevance and continue to be a cross-cutting issue in international organizations of all kinds, making them a central dimension of global social governance. Nonetheless, the chapter highlights that the growth of the children’s rights agenda has not been without conflict. International norms and measures surrounding children’s rights continue to be challenged and questioned by scholars and practitioners alike. Furthermore, the analysis of children’s rights provides opportunities to reconsider traditional approaches to global social policy.

Abstract:
AbstractThe literature on smallholder farming and climate change adaptation (CCA) has predominantly investigated the barriers to and determinants of farmer uptake of adaptation interventions. Although useful, this evidence fails to highlight the changes or persistence of adaptation responses over time. Studies usually adopt a narrow focus on incremental actions that provide limited insights into transformative adaptation pathways and how fundamental shifts in policy can address the root causes of vulnerability across different sectors and dimensions. Drawing on an evidence synthesis commissioned by the International Fund for Agricultural Development’s Independent Office of Evaluation, this chapter outlines how lessons from CCA interventions can be transferred via three learning domains that are essential for transformational change: scaling-up (in its multiple forms), knowledge management, and the human-environment nexus. We discuss the implications of our findings on monitoring, evaluation, and learning, highlighting the challenges that evaluators may face in capturing (a) the persistence or durability of transformational pathways, (b) the complexity of “super-wicked” problems, and (c) the relevance of context-dependent dynamics, within a landscape setting. We also address the contribution of evidence reviews to contemporary debates around development policy linked to climate change and agriculture, and the implications and value of such reviews to provide independent scientific rigor and robustness to conventional programmatic evaluations.

Abstract:
AbstractResearch has paid little attention to date on how the European Union (EU) affects private (usually voluntary) health insurance at domestic level and more broadly, the political economy of the public-private mix in healthcare. Our argument in this Introduction is that EU law and regulation is, essentially, likely to do so through the provisions applicable to the insurance sector as a whole. We then explain why it could potentially be a vehicle for transformative changes of private health insurers, and why, by extension, it could interact with the prior effects of domestic policy choices in healthcare. Ultimately, such interactions could also help change the nature and scope of health coverage. On the basis of these statements, we develop an analytical approach to elucidate, characterize and prove this influence. We then outline the research design and case selection processes and discuss the various methods applied in the nine contributions to this book. After a short summary of their respective findings, we reflect in a concluding section on how they echo wider debates in the literature on the role of private actors in contemporary Welfare States and on EU influence in healthcare.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses the role Virginia Woolf plays in contemporary Polish literature, examining the significance of her modernist legacy – as a vital part of planetary feminism – to Polish feminist fiction. Though Woolf entered Polish culture in the 1920s and her hybrid fictional forms were translated in the 1950-60s, her reception was delayed. Feminist rewritings of Woolf’s oeuvre began to emerge after the first Polish translations of Orlando (1994) and A Room of One’s Own (1997), followed by her auto/biographical writings. Polish writers – Joanna Bator, Sylwia Chutnik, Marta Konarzewska, Renata Lis, Izabela Morska, Maria Nurowska, and Olga Tokarczuk – transform, rewrite and re-use Woolf’s works in Central European cultural contexts. The most visible signs of Woolf’s ‘afterlives’ are transtextual relations between contemporary fiction, biographies of Woolf and her oeuvre. This chapter explores biofiction with Woolfian themes and intertextual echoes that enhance polyphonic effects. It also focuses on hypertextuality by analysing the functions of Woolfian hypotexts, for instance, tracing back the generic fusing of the Nobel Prize Laureate Tokarczuk’s ‘constellation novels’ to Woolf’s hybrid fictional forms. The chapter applies Jessica Berman’s ‘trans critical optic’ that allows to read Polish textual dialogues with Woolf from transdisciplinary, transnational and transgender perspectives.

Abstract:
This chapter explores Stranger in our Midst, a book examining Jewish characters and topics in Polish literature. It is an anthology which tries to give a balanced picture by including works both sympathetic and hostile to Jews. The chapter considers whether or not it succeeds in that endeavour. In creating such an anthology an editor has two choices: either to attempt a diachronic cross-section through each literary period, a complicated historical–literary procedure requiring thorough research into both literature and its social and other backgrounds, or else to reconstruct a comprehensive contemporary image based on the literary canon and including the most important works and authors, as found in standard literary histories and in school reading lists. Harold B. Segel follows neither of these strategies and his selection appears largely accidental.

Abstract:
Women have been involved in the creation of Polish literature since the 17th century. A new page in the history of Polish literature, which came after 1989, is associated with the rapid development of feminism. An important phenomenon of poetry at the beginning of the XXI century was the abundance of female names: at this time, the authors of the older generation, such as V. Szymborska, E. Lipska, K. Miłobędzka, J. Hartwig, continue to create, but new names also appear: J. Mueller, M. Cyranowicz, J. Bargielska, M. Podgórnik, M. Lebda, J. Fiedorchuk, M. B. Kielar. Contemporary Polish women’s poetry is very soulful, sensual and deep, it is filled with empathy, and at the same time it is subjective. Corporeality and frankness become one of the characteristic features of women’s writing: women’s poetry tells more openly and directly about the most intimate experiences.

Abstract:
The problems of creating and managing urban areas according to the approach called “intelligent’ are undoubtly one of leading challenges in contemporary world. A major part of published research from this range is focused on particular tasks of ‘environmental origin’, like sustainability, green economy, reverse economy or the “classic’ problem of protecting urban areas against various sorts of pollutions (air, water, soil, acoustic noise). But in the analysis of the literature sources authors of this paper have noticed that the problems of management is not enough often considered, especially in the context of collecting and processing ‘environmental’ data, obtainability of such data and - last but not least - using the information based on such data in procedures of managing the urban areas. In the introductory part of the papers the above mentioned problems are briefly presented as a background for further consideration. Next, the needs of environmental information in managing urban areas are identified as well as obtainability of such information. Authors have based the contents of this part of the paper on their own experiences from their project ‘Smart City: A Holistic Approach’ as well as on results of surveys carried out on a representative sample of Polish cities. Applying the developed by them model of stakeholder groups in Smart City, the authors presents in the third part of the paper some detailed proposals concerning both the requirements and manner of using the environmental information by various participants of Smart City projects. A special attention is paid on the meaning of environmental information in educational efforts. In the summary part of the paper, some perspectives for further research are briefly presented.

Abstract:
Since Mo Yan received the Nobel prize and also because he said many times that he considers Pu Songling his teacher, and he on more than one occasion reiterated that he was heavily influenced by Liao Zhai zhi yi, literary connections between Mo Yan and Pu Songling have been discussed by many literary scholars and critics. However, when it comes to contemporary literati, the scope of writers influenced by Liao Zhai zhi yi and those who revere this masterpiece is in no way limited by Mo Yan only. In such dimensions as literary style, approach to subject selection, character depiction and others, Liao Zhai zhi yi in one way or another exerted an influence over other writers. This paper deals with the influence exerted by Liao Zhai zhi yi on the linguistic consciousness, moral concepts and character depiction in contemporary Chinese literature, using Sun Li, Wang Zengqi and Gao Xiaosheng as examples. The clear and polished writing of Liao Zhai zhi yi, being exquisitely melodic throughout, the praise it gives to the persons who put morals and friendship before material possessions and are unwilling to forgo them even faced with the choice between life and death as well as the depiction of female characters — all of this served as an example and an inspiration for Sun Li, Wang Zengqi and Gao Xiaosheng.

Abstract:
Purpose of this article is to assess the first steps of development of social business in Lithuania. Research methodology − systematic analysis of the peculiarities of social business in the scientific literature; identification of the main social problems and possibilities for social business based on results of semi-structured interviews, expert assessment, data grouping and interpretation. Findings − social business development is slow compared to its need. The creation of a legal framework, validating a flexible model of social business and wider social advertising campaign can serve as catalysts for the breakthrough to pave the way for social business development. Research limitations − the main limitation – lack of official social business statistics. Another – factor of subjectivity, which could affect the results of the research, revealing only the main tendencies and problems. In the planning of further research, it is possible to seek greater objectivity of the evaluation by improving the survey questionnaire, to evaluate the social and economic efficiency of social business by the cost-benefit analysis method. Practical implications − the obtained results are useful for social and economic policy makers. Originality/Value − the study contributes to scientific literature by sufficient understanding of practical problems of social business development and fills the gap in research of possibilities of social business development

In Contemporary Issues in Business, Management and Education. Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.3846/cbme.2017.020.

Abstract:
Criminality and sense of security in residential areas are always present in the mind of citizens, and directly affect the work of police authorities, real estate agents and society at large. This study proposes the development of a multiple criteria model for the classification of residential areas based on their exposure to crime. By combining cognitive mapping with the Measuring Attractiveness by a Categorical Based Evaluation Technique (MACBETH), we also aim to increase transparency in the classification process of residential real estate, allowing improvement initiatives to be applied and crime rates to be reduced. The major difference between our proposal and the extant literature is the fact that the information collected from criminal, urbanism and real estate experts, who deal with crime adversities on a daily basis, will be analyzed and discussed during presential group meetings, allowing realism to be incorporated into the evaluation mechanism. The current proposal is a research agenda, and results will not yet be presented.

Abstract:
Purpose – examine the European Union (EU) integrated political crisis response system, within the scope of the EU common security and defence policy and the present value of negotiations as a tool. Research methodology – a systematic analysis of the scientific literature and descriptive methods were applied to analyse actual and recent theoretical scientific work on integrating the European Union security and defence policy. We were discussing the concept of security from the theoretical perspective of constructivism, presenting the essential features. The empirical part of the work proves how discourse theory may help develop both negotiations and constructivism methodology. Findings – Negotiation theory play an important role in crisis management, developed proposals for the theory and methodology of negotiations. Research limitations – research does not cover negotiations in the context of military actions; the research examines the only civil empirical case of COVID-19 crises. Practical implications – presented conclusions show how the development of negotiations theory may substantially increase responsiveness to any EU crisis. Originality/Value – this study as interdisciplinary combined mixed methodologies: constructivism methodology of threat identification was compared with discourse theory (Austin’s) speech act.

Bashkina, Ekaterina. "The Specificity of Psychological Safety in Structure of Personal Motivation of Police Officers." In The Public/Private in Modern Civilization, the 22nd Russian Scientific-Practical Conference (with international participation) (Yekaterinburg, April 16-17, 2020). Liberal Arts University – University for Humanities, Yekaterinburg, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.35853/ufh-public/private-2020-28.

Full text
Abstract:
The article covers the issue of the personal psychological safety of police officers. A theoretical analysis of the scientific literature was conducted, which resulted in a definition of the psychological safety of the individual police officer. PhIlosophical interpretations of the term ‘Safety’, in the ancient World, New Age, and the contemporary world have been considered (Platon, T. Gobbs, J.J. Russo, G.V. Gegel, N.A. Berdyaev). The psychological definitions of the term ‘Psychological Safety’ have been analysed (A. Maslow, A. Adler, Sullivan, M.A. Kotik, T. S. Kabachenko, I.A. Baeva, O.Y. Zotova, E.E. Pronina). The article describes specific traits of the professional activity of police officers, e.g., the operational environment, sudden job changes, permanent interaction with criminals, physical and psychological fatigue, high-level responsibility, the lack of sleep and recreation, etc. The study of the specificity of the personal psychological safety of police officers was divided into several phases. The first phase consisted in enquiring, upon which 47% of respondents were found out to feel psychologically unsafe, which proves the relevancy of studying this phenomenon. Furthermore, the technique ‘Motivation Diagnostics’ suggested by A.A. Akindinova was used, which has allowed the dominant needs of police officers to be determined: the need for safety, and the need for self-fulfillment. At the final phase, the authors employed the ‘Free Association Technique’, and have thereby found that 69% of respondents associate their safety with serenity, 62% - with protectiveness, 31% - with confidence, and 23% - with comfort/reliability. Moreover, here are differences in the subjective perception of safety in women (protectiveness), and in men (serenity).

Avis, William. Incorporating Gender Perspective in Peace Operations since 2018. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), November 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.143.

Full text
Abstract:
This rapid literature review collates evidence from academic, policy focussed and grey literature on progress on incorporating gender perspectives in peace operations since 2018, including the deployment of female peacekeepers, and the emerging issues in this field. Key messages that emerge from this review include: The focus on women’s participation in peace processes has led to several initiatives and efforts to promote increased representation, the multidimensional nature of the UN’s women, peace, and security (WPS) agenda is illustrative of the complexity of contemporary peace operations. The new and emergent issues in National Action Plans (NAP) on Women, Peace and Security. Critiques of Resolution 1325 suggest that while the resolution provides some examples of what a gender perspective means in the context of a peace agreement, it does not define what it means to apply a gender perspective to peace processes. Gender perspectives are largely absent from peace negotiations. Despite the evolution of this agenda, most contemporary peace processes are still top-down, elite-driven exercises that contribute to marginalisation and exclusion. Whilst there is high-level commitment towards the strategy and what it aims to achieve, institutional barriers, assumptions, and politics undermine its implementation. Key challenges identified in the literature, related to incorporating Gender Perspectives in Peace Operations include. Buy-in from leadership, Mandate and context, Gender and expertise, Terminology, Under-representation of women in peacekeeping. Meaningful participation, Gap between norms and provisions, and Practical/logistical/training issues in implementing the WPS agenda.
