Abstract:
At the moment, a small amount of research has been carried out in the Russian literature devoted to the analysis of the ideological foundations and concepts of the development of the Polish eastern policy. The purpose of this article is to study the key ideas of the eastern policy of the Polish state and their further evolution before the emergence of the Eastern Partnership in 2008. As sources, the author used materials in Russian, English and Polish, which made it possible to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the eastern policy of the Polish state. The author of the article concludes that the Polish eastern policy has deep historical roots and is based on a fundamental ideological basis. The article provides an analysis of the «Jagiellonian» and «Piast» concepts of the development of the Polish state. The key features of Poland's foreign policy strategy in the East, which are relevant nowadays, are associated with the ideas of Józef Piłsudski and Roman Dmowski - the idea of messianism and a civilizational mission. Today there is a revival of old concepts, the so-called «Prometheism 2.0». Studying the historical foundations of Polish politics will help in analyzing Poland's current foreign policy strategy.

Abstract:
The aim of my article is to present the Polish perspective on the state of the art of comparative studies of contemporary Polish and Lithuanian literature. In my article, I discuss difficulties that contribute to the niche status of the field as well as phenomena that positively influence its development. First, I touch upon issues of hermeticity of the Lithuanian language and complicated relations between Poland and Lithuania. Then, I focus on the availability of Lithuanian literature in Poland and mention publications concerning it, written in Polish. I also emphasize the significance of translation endeavors. Next, I enumerate centers that conduct comparative studies of Polish and Lithuanian literature and introduce scholars-comparatists and their publications. I also present the accomplishments of some figures whose activity was significant for building Polish-Lithuanian dialogue on the level of literature and literary studies. I enumerate initiatives that provide new possibilities for the development of this field of studies and describe institutions which promote Lithuanian culture in Poland. In the end, I present possible directions for comparative studies of contemporary Polish and Lithuanian writings.

Abstract:
Service activity, which is an essential part of modern economy, is constantly changing. The changing economic reality also involves changes in research orientations. Changes in the subject of interest in the literature related to geography of services are a reflection of the changes taking place in services. Economic changes, as well as technological and civilisation progress, result in the emergence of new directions of research, as well as the disappearance of some of the existing ones, which in current circumstances are losing their relevance. The beginnings of geography of services as a distinctive scientific discipline date back to the 1970s. Previously, service research was part of the field of settlement research. The 1970s brought an increased interest in services, which initiated the process of crystallising geography of services, manifested in both theoretical and methodological work. The article discusses current changes in Polish geography of services, in particular its new trends and research directions.

Mikołajczak contrasts the research concept of world literature with the dominant approaches to the world literature in the area of contemporary literary studies and the traditional model of the history of literature. She reflects on the situation of Polish literature in the world, taking into account the ways in which Polish works circulate in other cultural circles, the possibilities and limitations of translation as well as shifts within the canon. She also indicates the opportunities that open up for Polish literature in the global context.

Abstract:
Purpose. The presentation of results and analyses regarding on the journeys of ethical, cultural and social provenance in narratives available in contemporary Polish literature illustrated by chosen examples. Method. To prepare the presentation, qualitative methods were used together with the analysis technique of the content/plot of novels of autobiographies of contemporary Polish prose writers and travelers. The author analysed representative texts of such highly-regarded figures as philosophers by profession – Marek Kamiński, Joanna Bator, Krzysztof Środa – and wellknown writers: Andrzej Stasiuk, Krzysztof Varga, Ziemowit Szczerek and others. Findings. Research showed the authors’ great interest in history, culture, ethical and social issues during their numerous peregrinations all over Poland, Southern Europe and Central and Eastern Europe. The narration of the chosen author-travelers contains numerous reflections of existential-philosophical and cultural-social nature, focusing on sociological analysis. The interpretative framework in the works of the discussed authors fluctuates around local, global and glocal problems. Research and conclusions limitations. The study concerned only the works of Polish authors and concentrated on their journeys all over Poland, Southern and Central and Eastern Europe; borderlands, peripheral and cross-border areas. The phenomenon of the journeys of the analysed authors lies in the fact that their experiences are subjective, and their expeditions are undertaken to a considerable degree in mental space, a depicted world; they are unique imaginary adventures. Practical implications. Reading the works discussed in the article expands knowledge on culture, history and the society of countries where the authors undertake their ethically responsible travels. Their books can successfully become an element of literary/cultural tourism. Originality. In literature on the subject works concerning individual authors discussed in the article are dispersed. The advantage of the presented text is the depiction and analysis of the creative output of the examined authors in one place, including the characteristics of their journeys: spiritual, culinary, pilgrimage, cognitive and escape. Type of paper. The article is a review and a scientific, reflective essay.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the repatriation policy of the Polish state toward co-ethnics residing in some post-Soviet countries. Its main goal is to answer the question: Why has this policy been unsuccessful? Based on the existing literature, legislation and official documents, the article draws upon the approach laid down by Olga Zeveleva (2014), exploring two spheres within the repatriation program: the ideological and the practical. The key argument is that the failure of the repatriation policy in Poland was due to its poorly developed practical component. At the same time, its ideological component was fully in place, contributing to the program’s prolongation, even though it had not been bringing the expected results. In conclusion, it is argued that the persistence and strong ideological rooting of the idea of repatriation confirm an important aspect of the identity of the Polish state: the predominance of the ethnic concept of the nation. The analysis of the Polish case also shows the need for further development of Zeveleva’s conceptualisation of the success (or lack thereof) of repatriation.

Since the end of the Cold War and the reconfiguration of the map ofEurope, scholars across the disciplines have looked anew at the geopoliticaland geocultural dimensions of East Central Europe. Although geographicallyat the periphery of Eastern Europe, Germany and its changing discourseson the East have also become a subject of this reassessment inrecent years. Within this larger context, this special issue explores thefraught history of German-Polish border regions with a special focus oncontemporary literature and film.1 The contributions examine the representationof border regions in recent Polish and German literature (IreneSywenky, Claudia Winkler), filmic accounts of historical German and Polishlegacies within contemporary European contexts (Randall Halle, MeghanO’Dea), and the role of collective memory in contemporary German-Polishrelations (Karl Cordell). Bringing together scholars of Polish and Germanliterature and film, as well as political science, some of the contributionsalso ponder the advantages of regional and transnational approaches toissues that used to be discussed primarily within national parameters.

Abstract:
AbstractThe article presents problematic issues resulting from the Polish presence on the historical eastern border of the II Rzeczpospolita (Republic of Poland), or, as it is called in the Polish national discourse, “Kresy”. The notion of Kresy, to a certain extent, corresponds to the notion of ‘borderland’. However, the latter is neutral and used mostly in scientific discourse, whereas the former alludes to Polish national awareness in literature and much of the historical writings and presents itself as the lost centre of “Polishness”. This way, contemporary Polish historical memory makes substantial claims towards this space, both in a geographical and historical sense, while hardly tolerating the presence of indigenous, non-Polish populations inhabiting the area- Lithuanians, Belarusians, and Ukrainians. In order to revise these issues in the article, I have adopted a postcolonial studies perspective. Looking at Poland through the lens of postcolonial studies reveals that it holds a unique position due to its double status. Historically speaking, Poland occupied both the position of the colonizer and of the colonized. However, popular Polish imagination tends to see Poland only in its role of the oppressed victims of its powerful ibjesial neighbours. The dominant role of Poland and its version of colonial policy adopted towards its contemporary eastern neighbours is obscured or simply denied both in popular and scientific discourse. The analysis of the role of the “myth of Kresy”, proposed here, hopes to contribute to the understanding of the implications of the Polish contemporary “orientalism”.

Abstract:
The major works by Bruno Schulz and Witold Gombrowicz were translated into Japanese in the 1960s, mainly by Yukio Kudō. I was enchanted by those Japanese texts to such an extent that I decided to abandon French literature and switch to Polish contemporary literature. In 1974, I came to Poland on a post-graduate fellowship of the Polish government, and I began studies in literature and the Polish language at the Jagiellonian University. During that two-year stay in Krakow, my view of Polish literature changed several times. The phase well established in the Japanese translations I had known ended quickly. Then I began to “hunt” for promising Polish authors not yet present in world literature. I thus discovered the prolific, esoteric and difficult Teodor Parnicki (1908–1988). This essay is my description of my “penetrating” the world of the Polish language at that time.

Abstract:
This paper investigates basic issues related to the translation of Taiwanese literature in Poland. Assuming the Juliane House’s definitions that translation is “a cognitive procedure and a social, cross-linguistic and cross-cultural practice”, I discuss this matter theoretically and practically on three major levels pertaining to literature and communication between both languages and cultures. According to the system approach, the model is divided into: 1) Source/Taiwan literature; 2) Target/Polish reader; 3) Mediation/Translator and is imbued with reflection on representation, cultural and political context and equivalence in translation’s polysystem. In the practical dimension the analysis refers to a particular case, which is the preparation of the first Polish translation of Taiwanese Contemporary Short Stories. This article also reveals the decision-making process concerning the most representative selection of different genres, periods, stylistics, authors and messages. The anthology of contemporary Taiwanese short stories[1] debated here is being compiled from the perspective of translators, who are Sinologists teaching at the University of Warsaw. In line with the concepts of anthology theoreticians, this kind of academic edition with references and critical comment supports the Polish reader in the process of correct decoding of the text and many contexts of Taiwanese literature. Abstract:
Polish literature has been present in China since 1906. The first Polish literary text translated into Chinese was Latarnik (The Lighthouse Keeper) by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Contemporary fans of Polish novella and novel were reading indirect translations since the Chinese novelists, who did not speak Polish, usually based their translations on the Japanese versions. In my years of contact with Chinese culture and literature, I have never come across any mention of translations of Polish or Eastern European children’s literature. Once I started my research into this subject, I quickly learned what caused the lack of information on it. It turned out that it was quite difficult to find any credible information on what has been translated, in what volume it was published and what the reactions of young readers were.As a result, this article is merely an introduction to the research on Polish children’s literature in People’s Republic of China and focuses almost exclusively on latest publications, i.e. released in the twenty-first century. To a significant extent, it is based on data collected from people actively participating in promoting Polish culture in China via email. I received a lot of valuable data from Wojciech Widłak – one of the authors whose children’s books were published in China. The article is practically a short catalogue of books published on the Chinese market, but it also presents the few reviews I have managed to find in Chinese sources. There is also a presentation of the translators and it is worth noting that Polish children’s literature has been taken care of by the best among those studying Polish literature in China. I hope that this article will be the first of many on the position, popularity and reception of Polish children’s literature in China.

Abstract:
Shaping of Inflection Terminology in Polish Grammatical Literature in Years 1817–1939The paper presents the process of shaping of the canon of morphological terminology in Polish grammatical literature published in years 1817–1939. The author shows the evolution of the conceptual system of inflection, while paying attention to gradual distinction between inflection and word formationterminology, and to those who created and popularized terms that function to this day. The final part of the paper reflects on the consequences of the overlap of tradition and contemporary terminological decisions, as the analysed examples show that, within Polish grammatical terminology, there co-exist separate subsystems connected with linguistic descriptions created in different methodologies and different times. The result is ambiguity of certain terms, existence of different terms for the same notion, and frequently also fuzziness of definitions. Contemporary researchers, seeking to make terminological systems more precise, must also remember about the rules of commonness and of consolidation of terms within the language, with respect to specific notions.

Abstract:
In June 2015 The Canadian Polish Research Institute organized a panel discussion chaired by professor Tamara Trojanowska called “Writing Change and Continuity: Culture, Languages, Generations.” The debate featured esteemed writers of Polish descent: Eva Stachniak, Andrew Borkowski, Ania Szado, Jowita Bydlowska and Aga Maksimowska. Although the writers in question do not belong to the same generation and do not share exactly the same emigration experience, nowadays they form a distinguished group of Canadian writers of Polish origins. The aim of this paper is to look at the selection of the latest texts written by authors of the Polish diaspora in Canada such as Eva Stachniak’s The Chosen Maiden (2017), Jowita Bydlowska’s Drunk Mom (2013) and Guy (2016), Ania Szado’s Studio Saint Ex (2013) and Aga Maksimowska’s Giant (2012) among others. This paper does not venture to repeat the conclusions drawn during the panel but rather to extend the exploration of the recent Polish diasporic, multivoiced writing as well as offer a modest supplement to the famous analysis of ethnic writing proposed by Smaro Kamboureli in her Scandalous Bodies: Diasporic Literature in English Canada (2009). Hence, the discussion comprises the authors’ choice of themes, (dis)appearance of immigrant motifs, references to Poland as a country of origin and Canada as the new homeland as well as an analysis of the genres the aforementioned authors use.

Abstract:
The emergence and development of socio-cultural animation are closely related to the state of modern society and contemporary culture. Animation has become a response to their deficiencies and deficiencies, for the needs that our post-industrial society cannot satisfy. The development of civilization, which led to industrialization and urbanization, meant that the social structure underwent a radical transformation. Traditional forms of community life and the types of lasting relationships related to them have disappeared, and their place was replaced by individualistic culture focused on the individual and its self-fulfillment. The way we live has become increasingly dependent on the one hand on the state, with its ubiquitous institutions, and on the other hand on market mechanisms, increasingly aggressively entering all possible areas of social life. Many outstanding humanistic psychologists, such as Maslow, Perls, Rogers and Fromm, demanded action to transform the human individual. It was postulated to strive to develop in the individual such qualities as: openness, flexibility, the ability to make conscious choices, intrsteer, creativity, skepticism towards positively understood science and technology, striving for authenticity, treating life as internal changes, autonomy, caring for others, ecological sensitivity, independence, ability to self-organize into self-sufficient institutions, spiritual development. The theme of animation requires an interdisciplinary approach, as it concerns many areas of human life. Seen from a social perspective, it is associated with such phenomena as: enriching social and cultural life forms, inspiring people to creative life and creative activities, reviving local communities and various groups and environments, discovering the unrealized potentials of both individuals and groups. On the other hand, from the pedagogical perspective, you can see a range of methods in animation that can help you deal with contemporary educational and educational challenges. The publications have rich thematic literature that goes beyond Central Europe. The topic raised was not fully exhausted; this text is one of the components of the monograph being created, which will describe the overall profile of the animator and leisure time animation.

The argu-ments cited in the dissertation justify the importance of pansophism as the basis of Comenius’ work. The characteristics of pansophism present in synthesis the richness of its meanings that are not commonly perceived in the source literature. Authors who pondered over this issue have noticed its historical evolution. However, pansophism is not a historical artifact, but carries numerous consequences that, at least in part, are close to contemporary trends in scientific research.

Abstract:
The article discusses the ‘relationships’ that exist between literature, history and education in contemporary Polish narratives for children and young people. The historical literary works for young readers discussed in the text are strongly rooted in the concept of culture remembrance — they represent a variety of genres, a kind of modernist genre syncretism and hybrid forms, as well as a diverse type of narration. Walter Scott’s traditional historical novel model is mixed with narration maintained in the poetics of a story of a reflective character with a clearly exposed issue of the concept of time and setting (chronotope), and didactic short stories with elements of “dialogues with a thesis”. It is also worth noting that literary examples of playing with conventions using fantasy motifs. As has been shown, contemporary Polish literature on historical topics intended for children and young people as an element of historical education may constitute a specific cultural and social form of memory about people and events of the past years.

The first part of the question in the title refers to two slogans that are simultaneously two axiological triads; these triads (God–Honour–Home Country and Freedom–Equality–Brotherhood) were previously the subject of my investigations. It looks like they constitute the basic components of Polish contemporary imagination, containing an important symbol for Polish imagination and phenomena, symptomatic of emotions and ethics. One should note the meaning of these values’ separation. The article shows the initial contest of both slogans as well their importance and trans-formed contemporary meaning. Using as an example the selected texts of literature, both critical and journalistic, the paradox of Polish patriotism has been presented, where “everybody” identifies with and at the same time excludes “those different than me.” Attention was paid to the domination of the sacrifice model of patriotism in Polish culture, in opposition to other models: critical and “minimalistic” ones.

Abstract:
The Second World War has undoubtedly left a deep scar on the historical memory of the Polish people. The hardest ordeal for the Polish Republic was the military confrontation with Nazi Germany, which resulted in the loss of statehood and the horrors of the German occupation regime. As a result of World War II, Poland lost almost 40% of its national wealth and about 6 million of its people. The issue of political interpretations of historical events in contemporary Polish historical and political discourse is of particular importance. Reflected in educational literature, it is no less important than the positions set out in academic journals. Yesterday's schoolboy and student today is a minister's assistant and an officer, tomorrow a minister and a general. At the same time, there is no certainty that they will again turn to systemic education. One should also take into account the current status of the Polish Republic, its fundamental economic achievements and the apparent desire for an independent line in the European Union. All this makes the dialogue actual even in the current extremely difficult conditions.

This paper is based on the results of an extensive (840-page) report of the Committee on National Spatial Development of the Polish Academy of Sciences, entitled Studies on Spatial Chaos (edited by A. Kowalewski, T, Markowski and P. Śleszyński—Studia KPZK PAN, vol. 182, Warsaw 2018—in Polish). Its aim was to conduct a comprehensive and detailed study on the problem of spatial chaos (spatial disorder), including an estimate of economic costs in Poland. For this purpose, literature was queried (articles and reports, etc.) and special analyses were prepared for this purpose. The total annual costs of spatial chaos were estimated at not less than 20 billion euros per year. The conclusions also proposed solutions and suggestions (for the government and local governments), which may reduce the acute costs of spatial chaos in society and economy.

Contemporary currents of the Polish nationalist thought —an attempt at division in terms of the category of “tradition”This article aims at outlining the method of dividing the Polish political thought. For this purpose the category of “tradition” is used “Tradition” is perceived by the author as a type of conscious and reflective choice of achievements of the past made in the present. Based on “tradition” the author distinguishes the following currents of the Polish nationalist thought: the current of Neo-National Democracy, the current of National Radicalism, the Catholic National current, as well as the Progressive current and the current of Slavonic Neo-Paganism. Apart from political thought the tradition of Polish nationalism also includes political movement issues, literature and art. An important role in the reception and transmission of “tradition” to contemporary times is played by its guardians, which means people who endeavor to pass it on in a form desired by them.

Abstract:
The analysis of the state of research on contemporary Polish-Russian relations leads to the conclusion that this topic has been undertaken by the representatives of various fields of social sciences in Poland and Russia, as well as in the West for over last three decades. At the same time, no publications describe it in a comprehensive and up-to-date manner. This is due to the complex nature of the mutual relations and their high dynamics, as well as the selective approach of researchers. Currently, most of the works are endogenous: Polish authors write for Polish readers, and Russian researchers – for the Russian audience. Paradoxically, the most popular works devoted to Poland and Russia – although it is difficult to judge a priori whether or not they are the best – have been published in Western countries. Moreover, most of the texts devoted to Polish-Russian relations, especially in the political sphere, are devoid of theoretical apparatus. Certain idées fixes present in the literature, such as the imperialist nature of contemporary Russian policy, the resulting threats to Poland and Polish Russophobia deserve an in-depth analysis. Researchers should also pay more attention to some issues that are currently mainly dealt with by experts and journalists – in particular, the Russian hybrid war and whether Poland is or can be its target, as well as possible Russian interference in political life in Poland since 2014.

Abstract Beckett’s importance for Polish culture was established by the first production of Waiting for Godot in 1957. Since then, his significance has evolved in aesthetic, social and political terms. This may be illustrated by a model that focuses on: 1) the post-war sense of frustrated expectations (Waiting for Godot); 2) the approaching fall of the Iron Curtain (Catastrophe); and 3) a contemporary search for a new geo-political identity (“neither”). Direct and indirect parallels between Beckett and Polish artists are discussed (Jerzy Kreczmar, Antoni Libera, and Andrzej Stasiuk).

Abstract:
Remarks on the Elision of Labial Consonants in Contemporary Polish MediaIntervocalic elision of labial consonants seems to be one of the most common types of distorting the pronunciation of contemporary Polish words in colloquial speech. This phenomenon was described by Biedrzycki (1978) as typical of everyday speech and unknown to media or in official situations. Now it has entered the world of electronic media on a large scale and has become something of a norm among television presenters as well as experts and actors. All of these speakers tend to employ articulatorily incorrect Polish in official situations. This paper includes a preliminary classification of contexts where the deletion of labials takes place, and as such it is a continuation of Jaskuła (2014). Moreover, an attempt has been made to determine the reasons for elision. Analyses of similar phenomena which can be found in the phonological literature concerning both Polish and other phonological systems have also been taken into account with a view to discovering whether or not there is an interplay between phonetics and phonology in this respect.

Pseudo-metascientific newspeak? On the language of the Polish science policy The aim of this paper is a critical analysis of selected means of the language used in the contemporary (2016–2018) Polish science policy. The analysis attempts to apply the categories developed by Polish researchers in the description of newspeak as the language of power and media at the time of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL). The overall discussion is based on W. Pisarek’s view that what is called newspeak and referred to the PRL period in the Polish literature is in fact one of many possible forms of using language as an instrument of political persuasion. The object of the description is mainly language behaviours of the Polish scientists who are powerful and infl uential in the world of Polish science and who co-decide on the governmental science policy. The focus is on the language of the debate on a reform of the system of science and higher education (the so-called Ustawa 2.0 (Act 2.0), Konstytucja dla Nauki (Constitution for Science), ustawa Gowina (Gowin’s Act)). NOWOMOWA PSEUDOMETANAUKOWA?… 47 The principal conclusion is that the apparatus developed in the description of the newspeak of the PRL period could be employed in the description of a large number of language behaviours of representatives of the Polish science policy of the end of the 2nd decade of the 21st c. The fl ag words of the Polish science policy are characterised by monovalent connotation combined with a vague (or no) denotation.

Summary The article analyzes Polish Tartar travel writing in the interwar period, i.e. Mustafa Aleksandrowicz’s, Leon Kryczyński’s, Edige Szynkiewicz’s and Ali Ismail Woronowicz’s (all of them Polish Muslims) accounts of their journeys to North Africa (Morocco, Egypt) and the Middle East (Persia). The analysis shows that the themes and narrative strategies of their work differ in many ways from those of mainstream contemporary Polish literature and journalism. Most importantly, the Tartar authors saw the Islamic countries through Muslim eyes. This perspective also determined their interests (the themes) and their point of view (they combined the roles of the observer and the participant).

Abstract:
The article is the first part of a comprehensive study on representations of Hutsuls and the Hutsul region in the interwar Polish literature, which showed them during the First World War and the wars for the borders of the Second Polish Republic, as well as in the 1920s and 1930s. The article discuses, first and foremost, literary visions of Hutsuls and their native land in the wartime. It argues that these visions were deeply affected by war events that took place in the Eastern Carpathians in 1914–1915, when Polish soldiers from the 2nd and 3rd Legions Infantry Regiments fought with Russians and occasionally cooperated with some military volunteers recruited from the Hutsul community. The interwar Polish literature showed the Eastern Carpathians as a space where Polish soldiers’ bravery and dedication to the national cause were distinctly manifested. It also described and, as a matter of fact, exaggerated acts of fraternization between Polish legionnaires and the Hutsuls. This way the Polish literature imposed an important, patriotic significance to the Hutsul region and strengthened its position in the Polish national memory. Simultaneously, it showed the whole Hutsul community as allies of Poles in the fight for independence. This literary approach suggested that Hutsuls had their own history and cultural reality that differed from the Ukrainian one but fit in well with the history and contemporary times of Poles.

The article focuses on the selected examples of the blurring of a book’s genre status by means of specifi c editorial solutions, such as the use of a spatial layout of the text, the differentiation of fonts, the selection of printing paper, the cover design etc. This mechanism is discussed on the example of six experimental works of contemporary Polish non-fi ction literature. Books by Filip Springer and Jarosław Mikołajewski, bordering upon literary reportage, show how the use of typography enhances the formal hybridity or even amorphousness of the text. In turn, Mariusz Szczygieł and Wojciech Tochman, their documentary narratives, emphasize the mutual synergy between the physical components of the book, which undermines the standard genre classifi cation.
