Abstract:
The beginning of basketball in the world dates back to 1891 when a Canadian, James Naismith, invented the game for students in Springfield. After a short time, matches were played in Europe, in Paris (1893) and London (1894). The first demonstrational game in Poland was played by women in 1909, in Lviv. The discipline spread throughout Europe after World War I. In the 1920s, some state and international organizations were established to standardize the rules of the game. They allowed to play the first national championships and afterwards to organize interstate matches. In 1935, the First European Men’s Basketball Championship was organized, and three years later, women made their debut in the competition of this rank. Between 1938 and 2021, there were thirty-eight editions of the championships, in which the Polish national team participated twenty-nine times. Most medals were won by athletes from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Czechoslovakia, France, Bulgaria, and Spain. Poland’s most outstanding achievement was the gold medal won in Katowice in 1999. What is more, Polish women won two silver medals (1980,1981) and two bronze medals (1938,1968).

Abstract:
Background. The cavalry was the primary armed force of Poles and their legendary ancestors from ancient times, especially in historical formations. It also functions as an element of national history in culture in its various areas. Problem. How this fragment of the old Polish military culture manifests itself in high and mass culture, in the world of film, in the city space, in pictures and numismatic values, and how is it displayed in the field of martial arts cultivated today? Method. The answers will be formulated based on an analysis of 30 selected works of art, value or cultural artefacts and illustrated with examples. Examples include films of Polish cinematography (Teutonic Knights, The Deluge, Hubal and others), a series of commemorative medals and paintings by outstanding Polish painters that inspired the authors of these medals. Therefore, both great paintings by outstanding artists (Jan Matejko, Wojciech Kossak etc.), monuments and films, and small graphic forms (coins, medals). Results and conclusions. This Polish tradition of military culture manifests itself even today in high culture (painting, literature) and mass culture (films, songs), in urban space (monuments), and the artistic qualities of medals. It is also cultivated in the Polish martial art practised today – in teaching one of the schools. It is about horse fencing in Signum Polonicum.

Abstract:
Abstract Study aim: The aim of the study was to analyse the lifespan of Polish male Olympic medallists in comparison to the general male population. Material and methods: The study included 238 Polish male Olympic medallists who participated in the Olympic games in 1924–1992. Duration of life in relation to the general Polish population was assessed. The age of acquiring their first medal, type and number of medals won and sports discipline were taken into consideration. Results: Polish male Olympic medallists born before 1940 lived over 8 years longer in comparison to the general population (p < 0.0001, d = 0.689 and d = 0.750). Over 80% of them lived up to 65 years of age and over 40% up to 80. In the general population only <70% and <30%, respectively, reached the equivalent lifespan (p = 0.010 and p = 0.040, RR = 0.480 and RR = 0.783). Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated that survival was shorter in Olympic medallists who won their first medal before the age of 25 (p = 0.040) and in those engaging in endurance or power sports vs. mixed or skill disciplines (p = 0.010). Conclusions: Polish male Olympic medallists lived significantly longer than the general population of Polish men. The longevity of male Olympic medallists was affected by the age of acquiring their first medal and by the category of sport practised.

Abstract:
For almost fifty years students and academics scholars are contributing to the growth and development of physical culture in the University. An important role in this process is played by academic teachers of the Physical Education & Sport Centre. In the researched period, the number of teaching hours of physical education was systematically reduced from 240 hours to 30 hours (ministerial central decisions). Sports classes at the University are supplemented by sports sections in selected disciplines. Students training in such sports sections have won already 434 medals in Polish Academic Championships and lecturers from the Physical Education & Sport Centre significantly contributed to those results. The Centre’s personnel consist of specialists in team games and individual sports. Their results in World, European and Polish Academic Championships have contributed to the promotion of Jan Długosz University in Europe and the world. The best section of KU AZS (Academic Club of University Sports Association) is women’s table tennis (9 medals in Polish Team Championships, 8 Polish Cups, 46 matches played in the European Cup). The sport activists of KU AZS together with the Physical Education & Sport Centre in Częstochowa organized 28 Academic Championships of Poland. In the 20th century tourism and camping were withdrawn as compulsory classes. Since 2008 students of UJD have had excellent conditions for practicing sports and recreation (Academic Sports Center).

Abstract:
On many objects connected with Alexander I and his reign as the ruler of Polish Kingdom, on jewelry objects, medals ceramics, drawings etc., remained panegyric mottos and sentences glorifying him, and expressing admiration for his achievements as the „reviver” of Poland, giver of peace and freedom, expressing sorrow after his death. The available written sources commemorate laudations to his honor, declarations of loyalty, submissiveness and full surrender brought to his throne. They seem to paint a different picture of reality in the Polish Kingdom, unlike the one brought by the Polish collective memory of partition period, reminding the trauma of society and culture annihilation under tsar’s rule. We are not certain whether the praising texts of the Polish subjects of the tsar, preached in his honor, are sincere or only declarative, but the fact that they were created in the times of enslavement is worth investigating and reflecting upon.

Abstract:
From the printing of engravings, through the facsimilation of old prints, to the bartynotype of numismatic items, or About the Stripes and Works of Władysław Bartynowski Władysław Bartynowski was a famous Polish numismatist active in the second half of 19th century in Cracow. Apart from coins, his collection included also old historical graphics, prints and books. He worked as an antiquarian and publisher, and his key aim was to protect Polish cultural heritage and works of art representing his areas of interest. Therefore, he was not only collecting and trading, but also cataloguing, maintaining and reproducing prints, graphics , books and coins. Motivated by patriotic feelings, he used to take care of the safety of relics he received and the availability of copies to all interested parties. He was one of the first Polish makers of old prints facsimiles, which he called the likenesses. As an editor of „Wiadomości Archeologiczno-Numizmatyczne”, he tried to improve the method of reproduction of coins and medals on paper. In relations to that, he invented own method of hollow graphic reproduction of numismates on paper. These prints, called bartynotypes, were used mainly for cataloguing of the collection of count Andrzej Potocki. Unfortunately, the collection, like many other relics, was damaged or dispersed due to World Wars. Bartynowski’s reproductions remain the only relic of the lost works of numismatic, graphic and printing art, as well as the art of medals. He donated the greater part of the collection to the Czapski Muzeum he established together with the count Emeryk Hutten-Czapski and his wife.

Abstract:
The paper aims to study and publicize educational activities and exhibitions in Krakow by Oleksa Novakivskyi (1872– 1935), an outstanding Ukrainian artist — symbolist, expressionist, graphic artist, and educator, who over 20 years lived in Krakow (1892–1913) and Lviv (1913–1935) and founded his own art school in Lviv (1923–1935) for 100 students. The archival documents of the 1890s–1900s from the Archives of the Krakow Academy of Arts about Oleksa Novakivskyi’s studies in 1892–1904 were investigated. Oleksa Novakivskyi’sreport cards of 1892–1904 from the Krakow School and the Academy of Fine Arts were first introduced into scientific circulation. It was discovered that in 1892–1898 Oleksa Novakivskyi studied at the Department of Drawing of the Krakow School of Fine Arts (with a pause in 1893–1895) and received an “award in the competition” (1896), silver medals on July 15, 1897 and July 23, 1898 at the course of prof. Unierzyski, Stanislawski. In 1898–1901 Oleksa Novakivskyi studied at the Department of Fine Art, where he received a silver medal (1899) and a gold medal on July 15, 1900, on the course of Prof. Wyczółkowski, Stanislawski. In 1901–1904 Novakivskyi continued his studies at the Department of Fine Art at the School of Prof. Wyczółkowski at the Krakow Academy of Arts. It was established that Novakivski’s teachers in Krakow were the professors Florian Cynk, Jozef Unierzyski, Leon Wyczółkowski, Jan Stanislawski. In addition, personal documents of the painter’sspouse (whom the researchers previously listed as Anna-Maria) from the archives of Lviv and Krakow were introduced into scientific circulation (the identity card of Maryanna Rozalia Nowakowska, 1916; Birth Certificate of Maryanna Rosalia Palmowska, 1888), as well as the Polish specialized and popular periodicals of the 1890s–1930s that mentioned Oleksa Novakivskyi’s exhibitions participation in Krakow and Warsaw.

Abstract:
Sammanlagt 112 artiklar.

Wisnefski, Rachel K. "Police Officers' Perceptions of Social Media's Involvement on Delinquent Behavior by Juveniles." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/4343.

Full text
Abstract:
The rapid growth of social media platforms coupled with the technological savviness of juveniles has led to their delinquent behavior involving social media. Researchers should investigate this phenomenon in order to establish its extent and to minimize the harmful effects this behavior may have. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate and explore potential connections between social media and delinquent acts committed by juvenile offenders through the use of police officers' perceptions of those types of acts. The primary research question focused on determining what the perceptions and experiences of police officers in a southeastern state were relative to the phenomenon and relating policies. The conceptual framework focused on policy analysis through the use of police perceptions relating to social media and juvenile delinquency, with deterrence theory serving as a guide. Ten of 50 officers responded to an anonymous online open-ended questionnaire, and the data- were analyzed both inductively and through coded outlines to look for patterns regarding types of delinquency, perceptions of deterrence in present policies and perceived efficacy of educational programs. One hundred percent of the officers responding indicated first-hand experience with cases involving the phenomenon and believed all parts of deterrence theory were lacking in each of the present policies, in general, in order to effectively deter this behavior. Positive social change can be effectuated through creating or further implementing penalties at each level of public policy and ensuring sufficient educational programs exist to inform juveniles of the possible ramifications of these acts. These measures could lead to decreased rates of juvenile delinquency and victimization relative to this phenomenon.

Abstract:
The media can arguably be seen to have an important part in how the public view the police. A negative presentation is seen to have several grave consequences and is argued to influence the public’s confidence in the police's legitimacy. The police in Malmö have during the last decade received much attention and media coverage because of their severe issues with criminality and violence. The aim of this thesis was partly to examine how the police in Malmö is presented in printed news and what the consequences of this might be, but also to examine if the presentation of the police changed since the reorganisation of the police force in Sweden. The method used to achieve this was a thematic analysis which was used on 193 articles from three newspapers. This included a search for themes which were later compiled into measurable figures so an examination of potential trends over the covered period, the 1st of January in 2013 to the 31st December in 2016, was possible. The results showed that 71 articles were positive, 112 articles were negative and 10 articles were neutral or ambiguous. Thus, there were 41 more negative articles than positive which shows that there is a more negative presentation of the police. When examining the trends over time it showed that a change in the presentation occurs the year that the reorganisation of the police force takes effect, however, the change differs between the newspapers.

Abstract:

Abstract:

After the kidnapping and murder of his son Adam in 1981, John Walsh dedicated his life to advocating for missing children. He became the forerunner of a movement to change the laws of the country so that no parent or child would have to suffer through the same events his family endured. The media frenzy surrounding the case, as well as John Walsh’s efforts to make child endangerment and missing children a national issue, helped influence and alter the way the public views the issues of child safety, child kidnapping, and the offenders that harm these children. This research analyzed newspaper articles involving the Adam Walsh murder, and examined rhetorical patterns based on ideas of the social construction of reality, folk devils and moral panics. This research revealed five rhetorical themes the media used when discussing the Adam Walsh case: vulnerability of the victim, description of the offender and crime, transformation of John Walsh, America’s lost childhood innocence and the evolution of the criminal justice system. Results showed repeated pattern of descriptive language emphasizing Adam’s age for innocence and vulnerability, a distinct evolution of John Walsh as a moral entrepreneur and an overall loss of innocence and safety felt amongst parents and children.

This research revealed that the legislation developed and passed has been influenced by fear pervasive in society, rather than criminal data. The findings suggests that federal legislation needs to be modified so that there is less invasion into the lives of nonviolent offenders that are less likely to recidivate.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine Russia's foreign and security policy towards Sweden, as bordering practices, in the state-controlled media's international news reporting on gender equality. To achieve this goal the following two questions were formulated: 1) which narratives about gender equality can be read from English-language news articles about Sweden from the Russian state-controlled news company Sputnik News? and 2) in what ways do these narratives function as bordering practices? Utilizing critical border theory and both narrative analysis and strategic narrative analysis this study's results confirm previous research in several ways. The identified narratives have a predominant majority of negative angles to Sweden's disadvantage and there is use of ridiculing language with the intent to diminish Sweden's international position. I have been able to distinguish four main narratives that all touches upon gender equality in some way. These narratives,1) a polarized Sweden, a country in free fall, 2) extreme gender equality /feminism, 3) gender equality as a mirage, and 4) an elite that pursues an extreme agenda, are created by Sputnik by "harvesting" domestic media and then translating and repackaging the content to portray a negative image of Sweden. These narrative themes function in a normative way by highlighting the unusual and that which stands out, and through performative repetition, these foreign policy motivated narratives acts as bordering practices that constantly produce and reproduce the nations' borders, identity and sovereignty. This study concludes that the strategic narratives on gender equality in the Russian state-controlled media identified in this study function as a weapon in Russia's political war towards Sweden.

Costache, Andreea Madalina. "De-regulation of european media policy (2000-2014) The debate on media governance and media pluralism in the EU." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/284884.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD dissertation analyses the case of the regulation of media pluralism at the European Union’s institutions level. The main objective is to examine if there is an evolution on the EU media policy change from strict-government regulation to a soft-governance approach regarding the protection of pluralism from 2000 to 2014. In the first part the theoretical framework is developed, based on two theoretical concepts: media pluralism and soft-governance. In this regard, this study argues that media pluralism can be better protected if the statutory governance at national level of Member States is complemented with soft-regulatory measures at the EU level, considering the circumstances of the European Commission limitation of competences. In the second part are analyzed the media policy actions at the EU level. A distinction is made here between the policy actions and initiatives for the protection of media pluralism advanced by the EU institutions like European Parliament, the Council of Europe, civil society organizations and the ones of the European Commission. The hard-regulatory initiatives, strategies and arguments and soft-regulatory ones towards the protection of media pluralism, coming from all the media policy actors, are discussed. In this way, it can be assessed if the European Commission is distancing further more from the subject of media pluralism or is bridging the gap towards the initiatives of the Member States to complement these initiatives with soft-regulatory initiatives at the EU level.

Touri, Maria. "Media-government interactions and foreign policy : a rational choice approach to the media's impact on political decision-making and the paradigm of the Greek-Turkish conflict." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2006. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/742/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis provides a systematic understanding of the media-government relationship in the conduct of foreign policy and a rigorous approach of the media's role and impact on decision - making processes. It particularly covers a deficiency in the existing literature, with regard to the media's potential to Influence decision outcomes and cause policy changes. The thesis is a theory-based investigation while a case study is employed for illustration purposes. The thesis approaches the media within the context of an interaction with the government that reflects a complex interconnection of the media and politicians' decisions and is here explored with the employment of rational choice and game theory. The thesis develops a game - theoretic model, which identifies the media as a purposeful actor rather than a mere instrument in the hands of politicians; and provides a rigorous interpretation of the media - government relationship as one between two profit - maximising actors. It examines the payoffs and costs entailed in their decisions within this interaction, and concentrates on the potential influence that media decisions have on the government's payoffs. In this model, the media influence is conceptuallsed as an outcome of their ability to frame information according to their self-interests, which are tied to their organisational structure and lead to the production of audience - driven news stories. With the introduction of framing theory the thesis demonstrates the power inherent in the media's content to affect the recipient's perception of a given situation; and with the aid of prospect theory, it incorporates media frames into the decision-making process and exhibits their potential implications on perceptions of the risk entailed in political decision - making. The model develops a strategic cause - effect relationship between media frames and governmental decisions that is applied to and tested through the press coverage of two Greek - Turkish territorial crises. The investigation of the two events within the game - theoretic framework draws upon the media's power to create conditions of domestic/national cost for the government that can trigger apparently irrational and risky decisions. The findings suggest a strategic media impact on decision making processes and highlight the media's role as an actor plausible to affect decision outcomes and cause policy changes independent of the policy at hand.

Abstract:
AbstractHeimat: A German Family Album is a book by author and illustrator Nora Krug, named Best Book of 2018 by The Guardian and The New York Times’ critics. It is a collection of family photos combined with drawings, as well as photographic reproductions of objects and historical documents—such as notebooks, questionnaires, police reports, and letters. The narrative follows Krug’s quest to find out whether any of her relatives took part in the Nazi Party or professed any political views during the regime. In this text, I examine how the medial configurations of graphic memoirs in general, and of Heimat in particular, can communicate truthfulness. Relying on Lars Elleström’s framework, I first discuss the notion of truthfulness in mediated communication. Next, I examine the established tradition in graphic memoirs of using media representation, transmediation, and associated media products in order to claim truthfulness, so that readers accept them as valid demonstrations of a factual narrative. Then I present the case of Heimat, indicating how it sometimes differs from this convention. Finally, I offer a possible explanation for this deviation from the traditional use of media representation in graphic memoirs to convey truthfulness.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the process of preparing this volume, especially in our review of previous scientific work on the Nordic model of education, it appeared that different researchers approached the topic primarily in the form of historical–political policy analyses (Telhaug, Mediås, & Aasen, 2006) and through the qualitative description of individual country portraits or the differences between these (e.g., Antikainen, 2006; Blossing, Imsen, & Moos, 2014; Lundahl, 2016). In these previous analyses, the question was raised whether a common Nordic model of education can be identified at all and to what extent neoliberal policies and broader globalisation trends affect the further development of education systems in the Nordic countries. The latter has especially been discussed in light of the increased competition between these systems emerging currently, here running against the common thread that was adopted shortly after World War II. In contrast to the works mentioned above, this book explicitly chose a quantitative empirical approach to the topic, linked with the attempt to indicate, measure and evaluate educational equity across the Nordic countries using data from large-scale assessment studies. Thus, the approach of this book was more data driven and descriptive than oriented on the political question of whether a common model exists.

Abstract:
AbstractIn education, the ‘Nordic model’ refers to the similarities and shared aims of the education systems developed in the five Nordic countries—Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Sweden and Norway—after World War II. Traditionally, there have always been many similarities and links between the Nordic countries through their historical connections and geographical proximity. The common experience of solidarity and political oppression during World War II also created the basis for a common political orientation in the postwar period, which was also reflected in the education systems during the development of the countries’ economies and their establishment of welfare states. At the same time, this very process has been strongly supported by social-democratic governance in these countries in the 1960s and 1970s (Blossing, Imsen, & Moos, 2014). The model is based on a concept ofEducation for All, where equity, equal opportunities and inclusion are consistently cited as the goal of schooling and orientation (Blossing et al., 2014; Telhaug, Mediås, & Aasen, 2006). This corresponds to the egalitarian idea of a classless society, which is characterised by individual democratic participation, solidarity and mutual respect and appreciation for all. This idea was manifested in, for example, major reallocations of economic resources through the tax systems and free schooling for all, which arose out of the principle that parents’ lack of economic resources should not prevent children from obtaining a good quality education. The equalisation of structural inequalities and creation of equity was—and still is—the task of the education system in the Nordic countries. Worldwide, especially within the Nordic countries, the view is being shared that the education system should be fair and provide access and opportunities for further education, regardless of where someone lives, the status of the parental home, where someone comes from, what ethnic background someone has, what age or gender someone is, what skills one has or whether someone has physical disabilities (Blossing et al., 2014; Quaiser-Pohl, 2013). Some special features of the Nordic system are therefore deeply embedded in the school culture in the countries, for example, through the fact that access to free and public local schools and adapted education is statutory, which is in contrast to many other countries, even other European ones (further developed and discussed in Chap.10.1007/978-3-030-61648-9_2). The Nordic model is widely considered a good example of educational systems that provide equal learning opportunities for all students. Achieving equity, here meaning the creation of fairness, is expressed concretely in political measures to distribute resources equally and strengthen the equality of marginalised groups by removing the barriers to seize educational opportunities, for example, when mixed-ability comprehensive schools are created or the educational system is made inclusive regarding students with special needs (UNESCO, 1994; Wiborg, 2009). Equality is roughly connoted with ‘sameness in treatment’ (Espinoza, 2007), while equity takes further in consideration also the question of how well the requirements of individual needs are met. Thus, the goal of equity is always linked to the concept of justice, provided that an equality of opportunities is created. If, however, one looks at individual educational policy decisions on the creation of educational justice in isolation, one must weigh which concept of equity or equality is present in each case. For example, it is not enough to formally grant equal rights in the education system to disadvantaged groups, but something must also be done actively to ensure that marginalised groups can use and realise this equality. The complexity of the terms becomes even greater when one considers that to achieve equality, measures can be taken that presuppose an unequal distribution of resources or unequal treatment and, therefore, are not fair e.g., when resources are bundled especially for disadvantaged groups and these are given preferential treatment (will be further developed and discussed in Chap.10.1007/978-3-030-61648-9_2). Thus, equality and equity rely on each other and are in a field of tension comprising multiple ideas (Espinoza, 2007).

Abstract:
Polish Applied Art Society (Towarzystwo Polska Sztuka Stosowana) focused not only on designing interiors, furniture or tapestry, but was also interested in graphic design, to which an exhibition in Kraków was dedicated (24th December 1904 to 10th February 1905), organized in cooperation with the National Museum. The aim of the exhibition was ‘to present the degree of artistry in contemporary Polish printing, to emphasize the aspirations, to give it a distinct character, to give an overview of the artistic use of folk motifs and to inform about the current state of printing technology’. The exhibition was to draw the publishers’ attention to the issues of contemporary print design as well as to arouse the interest of artists in this field. Warchałowski argued that the exhibition was to show that the distinctive Polish character of printing consisted of two elements – the individuality of artists and the use of folk motifs. The National Museum was responsible for the exhibition of the old prints. The exhibition included the most interesting Polish posters of the period, made in the technique of lithography in the workshop of Aureliusz Pruszyński in Kraków. There was also a presentation of publications of the Jagiellonian University Printing House, National Printing House of Napoleon Telz, Piotr Laskauer in Warsaw and several others. The Society did not fail to boast about their own prints – to the quality of which they paid particular attention – the catalogues, periodicals, reports, exhibition posters, correspondence cards. There was a separate presentation of works of the artists who had already been successful in the field of graphic design, among others of Józef Mehoffer, Eugeniusz Dąbrowa-Dąbrowski, Karol Frycz, Stanisław Wyspiański, Henryk Uziembło. The last part of the exhibition was devoted to foreign prints, mostly from Feliks Jasieński’s collection. There were American, English, as well as Chinese and Japanese publications. The exhibition was widely commented on in the press, and it was quite well received. The selection of the presented works, their artistic level as well as the arrangement of the exhibition were praised. The TPSS appreciated several printing houses, awarded medals and distributed cash prizes.

Scout Cross appeared on the uniforms of Polish Scouts in 1916. At the time a number of Polish Scouts were fighting for the Polish independence in Polish Legions (PL). PL were established alongside the Austro-Hungarian Army and fought on the Russian front. Since 1916, the commander of I PL Brigade, Józef Piłsudski, was awarding scout-soldiers with the badge of I PL Brigade “For Faithful Service”. Later on the following badges were awarded to Polish Scouts serving in military: Lwów Defence Cross (1918) for fighting for Lwów (today Lviv) against Ukrainians in Polish-Ukrainian War 1918-1919; “Eaglets” Honorary Badge (1919) for Polish youth self-defence; badges for Polish-Soviet Russia War: “For Wilno (Vilnius)” (1919), Lithuanian-Belarusian Division Badge (1919), Lithuanian-Belarusian Front Badge (1919-1920). There were also separate badges of the Blue Army of General Haller. On an equal footing with other soldiers, Polish Scouts were awarded military combat decorations: the highest of them: Silver Cross of Virtuti Militari Order (since 1919), as well as Cross of Valour (since 1920) and Cross of Merit of Central Lithuanian Army (1922). After the wars, as combatants, Polish Scouts were decorated with the Cross and Medal of Independence (since 1930), Scouts Honorary Cross of the Period of Combat for Independence (1938), plus other awards.

Abstract:
In May, 2007 the Irish Central Statistics Office embarked on an Education Outreach Programme. The programme is driven by the desire to increase the awareness and effective use of statistics in Ireland. Educating CSO data customers is seen as a key driver in this goal. Since 2007, the CSO has fostered key partnerships at a national and international level to develop and implement a number of key projects. Seminar Series, Statistical Liaison groups, Oireachtas briefings, CensusAtSchool, the John Hooper Medal For Statistics, the Professional Diploma in Official Statistics for Policy Evaluation, the International Statistical Literacy Poster Competition and YouTube video production, are some of the projects developed under the umbrella of the Education Outreach Programme. This paper outlines the rationale behind the development and implementation of the Irish Education Outreach Programme with illustrations drawn from the Irish experience to date.

Abstract:
At the end of gastrulation, the endoderm forms a single-cell thick epithelium lining the ventral surface of the developing embryo. Subsequently, through a series of poorly understood events, the initially flat endoderm is transformed into the gut tube, a cylindrical structure that gives rise to the epithelial lining of the entire respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. In birds and mammals, formation of the gut tube begins with two invaginations at the anterior (head) and posterior (tail) poles of the embryo, termed the anterior (AIP) and caudal intestinal portals (CIP). It is thought that the AIP and CIP begin moving toward one another as two progressing waves of lateral-to medial folding (from left and right toward center), “zipping” the gut tube closed along the embryonic midline (Fig. 1A). This view of lateral-to-medial folding is, however, inconsistent with several observations. For example, fate mapping studies in chick and mouse that suggest that cells originating in the posterior end (toward the tail) of the flat endoderm do not form the hindgut, but instead contribute to the more anterior midgut [1, 2]. This would not be possible in a simple lateral-to-medial folding process. Therefore, it is largely unknown how this fundamental structure of the vertebrate body plan is established. The objective of the present work is to apply multi-photon live imaging of the chick embryo to determine how the hindgut is formed. Our findings suggest the hindgut arises from directed, collective cell movements that drive antero-posterior folding of the initially flat endoderm.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The achievement of international and mainly Olympic sporting success is increasingly vital to a country with a well-developed sport system. The number of medals won in Olympics Games and, other international sports competitions offer the most self-evident and transparent measure of success in high-performance sport. Increasing competition between nations to succeed in international sporting events also leads to increased financial investments in elite sports from state sources. Many countries invest in sports in which they have built traditions of success or are their social capital. In this article, the theoretical framework assumes that nations that give priority to the financing of certain sports improve the efficiency of the allocation of funds. The purpose of this study is to identify the indicators (criteria) for financial support of elite Bulgarian sports and answer the following questions: (1) whether and to what extent it is necessary to prioritize the financing of sports in Bulgaria; (2) if it is a guarantee of success; (3) and which are the sports that are given the highest priority. The technique of the coefficient of concentration or the share of funding allocated to the four most funded sports within this Olympic cycle was used. In 2021, 46 sports were funded, of which 33 were Olympic and 13 non-Olympic, with a budget of 27.459 million. The data collected show that the first four federations receive about 33.3% of the total budget share for the year — the next four -24.125%. So, the first eight funding proposals receive about 60% (59.175%) of the MMC’s total budget, the remaining -40%. Establishing the link between performance (sports performance) and the country’s policy on sports funding is a rather ambitious task. International sporting success in both summer and winter Olympic sports is primarily determined by factors that cannot be controlled solely by a country’s sporting policy, which makes success relatively relative.
