Louine, Jeannice LaToya. "Media Portrayals of Police-Involved Deaths in U.S. Newspapers, 2013-2016." Thesis, Mississippi State University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10840703.

Abstract:

In the past five years, there have been numerous newspaper reports on police-involved deaths (PID) in the U.S, many of which have involved African American males as victims (Shane, Lawson, & Swenson, 2017). Police-involved deaths (PID) is defined as a death of an individual that results from police action (i.e., by firearm, by electroshock weapon [commonly known as a Taser©], or by vehicle). Given the amount of coverage of police-involved deaths, it is important to investigate which PID victims receive the most coverage in U.S. newspapers. This study merges three databases (Fatal Encounters , the Washington Post, and the Guardian ) which collect information about PID cases that occurred in the U.S. Once a list of PID victims was compiled, Nexis Uni (formerly Nexis Lexis) was used to obtain U.S. newspapers that covered PID incidents. In this study, I examine the race, age, region, and manner of death to distinguish which of these independent variables are the strongest predictors of the number of words and articles used in describing PID incidents. Using a linear regression model, the findings indicate that PID incidents involving African American males had significantly more articles and words written about them than PID incidents involving non-African American males and this effect remained after controlling for other correlates of PID incidents. Additionally, PID incidents involving firearm deaths received significantly more media attention as well. Given the amount of newspaper coverage on PID victims, the ways in which the media portray the victims in those contexts can influence the criminal process for officers involved in the killing. In addition, media portrayals of these incidents can impact policies that revamp the ways in which officers communicate with people of color, specifically African American men (i.e., cultural sensitivity training).

Erlandsson, Therez. "Medias presentation of the police in Malmö. A thematic analysis of three Swedish newspapers."

Full text
Abstract:
The media can arguably be seen to have an important part in how the public view the police. A negative presentation is seen to have several grave consequences and is argued to influence the public’s confidence in the police's legitimacy. The police in Malmö have during the last decade received much attention and media coverage because of their severe issues with criminality and violence. The aim of this thesis was partly to examine how the police in Malmö is presented in printed news and what the consequences of this might be, but also to examine if the presentation of the police changed since the reorganisation of the police force in Sweden. The method used to achieve this was a thematic analysis which was used on 193 articles from three newspapers. This included a search for themes which were later compiled into measurable figures so an examination of potential trends over the covered period, the 1st of January in 2013 to the 31st December in 2016, was possible. The results showed that 71 articles were positive, 112 articles were negative and 10 articles were neutral or ambiguous. Thus, there were 41 more negative articles than positive which shows that there is a more negative presentation of the police. When examining the trends over time it showed that a change in the presentation occurs the year that the reorganisation of the police force takes effect, however, the change differs between the newspapers.

Raymond, Leigh Alice. "Dangerous people and places : a community newspaper's constructions of crime." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1013091.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that there is a clear imbalance in the representation of crime in the newspaper, Grocott’s Mail, in Grahamstown, in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The thesis concludes that the system of marginalisation and segregation which was established during the apartheid era is the foundation for the continued segregation and marginalisation of certain groups of people in Grahamstown as depicted in crime journalism. Previous research shows that not only people, but spaces are marginalised through media representations of crime. As people are represented as dangerous, so too the spaces they occupy become dangerous spaces. Importantly, the research shows that discourses of marginalisation are present in newspaper reports reproducing the discourses prominent in society, and in turn, the newspaper itself perpetuates these marginalising discourses. This extends into the coverage that different crimes receive in newspapers. For instance, the reports show that a middle-class audience will be more concerned with property crime in middle-class neighbourhoods, than other crimes in lower-class neighbourhoods. I argue that not only the type of crime, but the severity, the effect, and the necessity for justice represented by the newspaper, are all largely determined by the region of the crime. Further, I show that the criminal is not only demonised and represented as individually deviant in the reports in the newspaper, but that these representations are made by this newspaper because they are deeply imbedded as a discourse in society. This is partly because this newspaper has taken on a monitorial role, requiring neutral reporting from journalists, and a dedication to surveying the processes of state institutions, like the police and courts. As a result, the ways in which crime is reported on in the newspaper is fairly well fixed, making it difficult for journalists to conceive of different ways of reporting crime. The representations of the criminal justice system that the monitorial media, this newspaper included present, are a careful balance between the interest of the public, and the need to preserve relationships with sources. The monitorial media in general, and this newspaper in particular, represent the criminal justice system. The relationship between the police and the newspaper, and the courts and the media, therefore strongly influences the way in which crime news is reported. In particular, crime news is represented from the perspective of the criminal justice system. This research was carried out using Critical Discourse Analysis, qualitative interviews, and focus group interviews.

Ndangam, Lilian N. "British newspaper coverage of child sexual abuse : relating news to policy and social discourses." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2003. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14446/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research explores the dominant meanings arising from British newspaper reportage of sexual violence directed at children. The research employs a quantitative and qualitative analysis to answer the following questions: What are the dimensions of child sexual abuse that are covered? How do the media cover these (e.g. as straight news, editorials, opinion columns)? How are offenders and victims portrayed? What sources are cited in stories? What explanations are offered about the occurrence of child sexual abuse? The objective is to: (a) describe the content of press reportage about child sexual abuse through quantitative and qualitative content analysis and; (b) explain the nature of that content in terms of better understanding journalism as a producer of meanings, specifically in relation to coverage of child sexual abuse. In simultaneously identifying and comparing news coverage, the research attempts to articulate the political and ideological functions of language in newspaper coverage of child sexual abuse. It also attempts to develop explanations for the discursive representation of child sexual abuse in the British press, linking news discourse on sexual offending against children to the journalistic practices in news production, the profile of the profession as well as broader prevailing socio-political ideologies about the family, offending, childhood and risks faced by children. A close and systematic analysis of news texts is important to understanding the role of the media in the production of meanings about such a social problems.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the under-researched terrain of policy elite-newspaper engagements and in so doing makes a substantive contribution in formulating an original conceptual framework for understanding how the interactional dynamics of the political-media complex work. This framework is then applied to the GM food row in Britain by asking how contestation emerged, was sustained then subsided in the political-media complex. This reconstructs the processes by which the pro-GM government consensus was challenged by newspapers, conflict escalated to fever pitch, threatening policy elite agenda and was finally negotiated through key compromises. Drawing on a theoretical framework that combines participatory politics, the political-media complex and new risks, the thesis conceptualises interactional dynamics as ‘discursive intersections’. These are shifts in claims and counter-claims that emerge during engagement at the interface of different sets of knowledge, cultures and agenda in the political-media complex. However there is an element of unpredictability in discursive intersections that arises from the paradoxical interdependence-independence of the relationship in the political-media complex; the elective and episodic nature of engagement on particular issues; and the variable form this may take with potential for conflict, negotiation or consensus. Historical and wider argumentative contexts are crucial to how and what form engagement takes place but do not define it. Thus, the trajectory of discursive intersections needs to be explored empirically rather than predetermined theoretically. This is done using a hybrid methodology that draws attention to the dialogical, persuasive nature of discursive intersections. The substantive contribution of the research is the formulating of this alternative framework for the analysis of interactional dynamics and its application to the GM food row in Britain. It does this by exploring how – that is the process in which - engagement emerged, escalated into contestation, was negotiated and then subsided. What emerged were the following findings. (1) Parallel, sustained and conflictual systems of argumentation about risk were developed between media and political elites despite elite consensus, abstract debates and short news cycles. (2) Newspaper contestation was constructed around a deeply ambivalent suspended certainty based on claims that there was no evidence of risk or benefit, harm or safety and demands for elite responsiveness to acute public anxiety over this.

Mwale, Edna. "An investigation into the impact of the gender policy on journalistic practices at the Times of Zambia newspaper." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1008303.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the impact of the Times of Zambia gender policy on journalistic practices. The policy was formulated to address issues of representation of women both in news coverage and at an institutional level. In spite of the implementation of the editorial gender policy, no change in gendered representation is evident. As a media practitioner and a Zambian woman concerned with social justice, I set out to investigate the impact of this policy on journalistic practices. The study is informed by a Cultural Studies approach to media studies, specifically drawing on the 'circuit of culture' (du Guy et ai, 1997) and focused on two specific 'moments', namely representation and production. Data was collected using two qualitative methods, namely document analysis and semi-structured in-depth interviews. The document analysis established that this policy is informed by a liberal feminist approach to media and identified the weaknesses in its formulation. The subsequent semi-structured in-depth interviews probed the practices and perceptions of male and female journalists and editors in relation to the degree of change in gendered representation in the news. This study finds that the editorial gender policy at the Times of Zambia has not had any significant impact on the journalistic practices and it probed the reason for this lack of effectiveness. It argues that this can be partially attributed to the orientation of the policy within a liberal feminist paradigm which neglects the internal and external factors that influence the representation of women and men in news production. Further, this position ignores the societal structures and power relations which impact, albeit unintentional, on the treatment of news. Inter-organisational factors such as profit maximisation, political interference, the use of news values and news beats are identified as leading to the exclusion of representations of women in hard news. At an intra-organisational level, lack of importance attached to the policy by senior staff and their attitudes to news production in general have meant that the policy was not enacted or ensured in any meaningful way. The study also established that the patriarchal values that characterise Zambian society influence journalists ' and editors' treatment of news, thus making the implementation of the policy ineffective.

Abstract:
Why do some organizations in a movement seeking social change gain extensive national newspaper coverage? To address the question, we innovate in theoretical and empirical ways. First, we elaborate a theoretical argument that builds from the political mediation theory of movement consequences and incorporates the social organization of newspaper practices. This media and political mediation model integrates political and media contexts and organizations' characteristics and actions. With this model, we hypothesize two main routes to coverage: one that includes changes in public policy and involves policy-engaged, well-resourced, and inclusive organizations and a second that combines social crises and protest organizations. Second, we appraise these arguments with the first analysis of the national coverage of all organizations in a social movement over its career: 84 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights and AIDS-related organizations in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Wall Street Journal from 1969 to 2010. These analyses go beyond previous research that provides either snapshots of many organizations at one point in time or overtime analyses of aggregated groups of organizations or individual organizations. The results of both historical and fuzzy set qualitative comparative analyses support our media and political mediation model.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the framing of the economic policies of American populists Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders in American quality newspapers during the 2016 primary elections. This is done with the intent of investigating if the common assumption that the economic policies of pop-ulists are irresponsible could be observed in the news media. By analyzing two newspapers oppo-site each other on the political spectrum – The New York Times to the left and The Wall Street Journal to the right – and their coverage of the policies of two candidates opposite each other on the political spectrum, a complex comparative study is achieved. An inductive frame analysis yielded six different frames used when discussing the economic policies of the candidates: dam-aging, ignorant, unpredictable, unorthodox, status quo and positive change. While none of the frames fit into a binary “irresponsible” or “not irresponsible” category, the frequent use of the damaging and ignorant frames suggests that the assumption of populist irresponsibility is alive and well.

The analysis of mainstream newspaper content has long been mined by communication scholars and researchers for insights into public opinion and perceptions. In recent years, scholars have been examining African-American authored periodicals to obtain similar insights. Hearkening back to the 1950s and 1960s civil rights movement in the United States, the highly-publicized killings of African-American men by police officers during the past several years have highlighted longstanding strained police-community relations. As part of its role as both a reflection of, and an advocate for, the African-American community, African-American journalistic texts contain a wealth of data about African-American public opinion about, and perceptions of, police. In years past, media content analysts would manually sift through newspapers to divine interesting police-related themes and variables worthy of study. But, with the exponential growth of digitized texts, communication scholars are experimenting with computerized text analysis tools like topic modeling software to aid them in their content analyses. This thesis considers to what degree topic modeling software can be used at the exploratory stage of designing a content analysis study to aid in uncovering themes and variables worthy of further investigation. Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the social representations presented in the articles published in the newspaper Jornal da Tarde (JT) - specifically the articles written by the journalist Percival de Souza -, and articles from O Estado de São Paulo (OESP) and Folha de São Paulo (FSP) on the Death Squad of Sao Paulo city, comprising the period from November 1968 to December 1978. It aims to contribute to the historical study of the press and its operation in contemporary Brazil, insofar as its agents have real interests and aims in the construction and in the conduction of a collective interpretation of society. We adopt the concept of social representations by the historian Roger Chartier, according to whom, the social representations produce practices and strategies, aiming to legitimize a reform project, to the detriment of others. In addition, we made interviews, aiming to broaden the discussion about the sources and to recover a certain context that we were not able to understand only by analyzing the articles. In doing this, we also gave voice by interviewing the protagonists of the story - the journalist Percival de Souza, and the attorneys Hélio Pereira Bicudo and Dr. João Benedito Azevedo Marques (who participated in the investigations on the activities of the Death Squad) - and the Captain Francisco Jesus da Paz. Finally, the research found out that, at the beginning, the articles presented the emergence of the Death Squad as a revenge act, accepting police officers and chiefs versions of the story. However, from the 1970s and forwards, the newspapers changed its perspective and showed the incoherence of the public authorities of the Executive Branch of the State of Sao Paulo, particularly regarding to the former governor Roberto de Abreu Sodré and to the former Secretary of Public Security Hely Lopes Meirelles, who insisted in denying the existence of the Death Squad, they also highlighted the work of Justice to punish the members of the Death Squad. Besides, from the 1970s and forwards, these newspapers also highlighted the actions of Justice to punish the members of the Death Squad.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to understand how Danish and Swedish news media and governments framed “the refugee crisis” in the context of the Swedish implementation of border controls in 2015 and the removal of external border controls in 2017. We operationalize framing theory (Entman 1993) to understand the differences and similarities in the framing of "the refugee crisis” in Denmark and Sweden. While the main focus is media representations, policy documents are included in the study to deepen the analysis and understand the similarities and differences across migration policies. Through a quantitative content analysis of 259 newspaper articles from eight Danish and Swedish newspapers, a framing analysis of ten policy documents and a qualitative framing analysis of the overall frames in the news articles and policy documents, we identified a dialectic relation of power between media and political discourse in both countries. We found that issues defined and represented in policy documents tend to reflect the challenges that news media define and the other way around. Even though Danish and Swedish newspapers and policy documents highlight similar problems, our data indicates clear differences in migration policies, in the two countries, in terms of the framing of asylum seekers, refugees and political events in 2015.

Wang, Sidan. "Dynamic constructed climate change discourses and discourse networks across newspapers in China around three critical policy moments : a comparative study of 'People's Daily', 'China Daily', and 'Southern Weekend'." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/33375.

Full text
Abstract:
With the rapid growth of economy and carbon emissions, China has been seen as having a key role in addressing climate change and receives substantial attention from the media. In the Chinese coverage, climate change issues can be interpreted as various concerns and ideas involving the dimensions of the economy, energy and emissions, public involvement, science and ecology, and responsibility. In this sense, a discourse approach can be used to understand how the newspapers construct the climate change discourse and discourse networks in the coverage. This study selects three different newspapers in China, namely People’s Daily, China Daily and Southern Weekend. Also, it identifies three critical policy moments for observing changes in climate change discourses of China, namely the release of China’s National Climate Change Programme on 4th June, 2007, the announcement of China’s positions on the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference on 26th November, 2009 and the submission of China’s Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on 30th June, 2015. This PhD thesis makes a primary contribution to academic studies through the application of an interpretivist discourse network approach to understanding the constructed climate change discourses in the newspapers in China. This approach employs storylines, actors and discourse network to analyse the constructed discourses. Actors are seen as news sources cited in the newspapers, and storylines refer to various statements concerning the issues identified in the coverage. Also, it contributes to existing knowledge of climate change politics and coverage of China, dynamic environmental discourses and social constructionist approach. This thesis identifies three dominant discourses constructed in the climate coverage, namely development, ecological modernisation and low carbon, which have been rising and falling in their prominence in different ways across the newspapers in China.

Death has frequently been a piece of news present in newspapers. In fact, some might say that journalism would not survive the lack of police occurrences which are becoming ever more frequent due to the increase of urban violence indexes that seem not to select race, gender or social status. Nevertheless, what is observed is that there are distinct spaces for these pieces of news in the papers. On no account will some deaths ever hog the headlines, whereas others will have special media coverage, with reporters covering the police investigation steps as well as demanding celerity in the Justice processes. In this perspective, we have yet observed that the treatment given to the coverage of these cases rules police journalism, which may contribute to the banalization of violence and an omitted media in its role to claim on efficient public polices from the administrators. News publication as an extension of police reports frequently leaves the victim’s name uninformed, thus turning them invisible to the readers. Given this context, it gives the impression that the vast majority of deaths bother neither the press nor society, consequently. On the other hand, when violence reaches the noblest layers and notorious prominent people, crime has far-reaching repercussion. In order to reach this understanding, we have referred to methods of Speech Analysis (SA) and Content Analysis (CA) which have allowed us to decode the meaning of words as well as the recurrence of terms and elements that claim to this distinction between what we call the illustrious and invisible dead in the Jornal da Paraíba. Our study aims at understanding what the criteria is in this journalistic process, in which these victims of violent crimes tend to either be immortalized or minimized, according to the type of coverage given and the form that this piece of news is treated in the paper. In the extract analysed, it was possible to observe that crime coverage apart from being superficial, it most often disrespects the victims of violent crimes using biased expressions in place of their names, thus, somehow being attempts, though unconscious, to justify their deaths. At last, we understand that this crime coverage lacks, as well as the Police themselves, investments and better staff training

Abstract:
Mass media is of great importance for the public conversation as it makes it possible to spread information to the citizens of the nation. In order to influence citizens perceptions of the world, it is of great value for journalists to discuss particular subjects in newspapers. Analyses of daily newspapers therefore proves they are of relevance as they provide us with knowledge about how opinions are created as well as how the politics shapes the public conversation. In order to increase our knowledge of how the debate regarding European membership appeared in Swedish newspapers, this essay has studied Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet and Aftonbladet. Three newspapers with different political orientation. The essay describes how the different newspapers, with different opinions appeared as well as how the newspapers articles were written by reason of their political views. The essay shows that the bourgeois newspapers, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet, wrote positive articles regarding the membership and negative regarding the government whereas the social democratic newspaper Aftonbladet was skeptical about the membership as well as the opposition. This essay further explains how a newspaper study can be used in educating high school students in history where they increase their knowledge of source criticism and examine and interpret newspapers in order to understand how coverage of politically charged subjects can differentiate, depending on which newspaper they read.

Abstract:
The construction of journalistic professionalism in Zimbabwe has stirred debate among scholars. Critics have argued that professionalism has been compromised by the stifling media laws in Zimbabwe as well as the extra legal measures the state has enforced to control the press. Some have also argued that a new kind of journalism must be emerging in the Zimbabwean newsroom as journalism try to cope with the political and economic pressures bedeviling the country. Much of this criticism however, has not been based on close interrogation of professionalism from the perspective of the journalists in any particular newsroom. It is against this background that this study examines the constructions of professionalism at the Financial Gazette. In particular it explores the meaning of professionalism through interrogating the journalistic practices the journalists consider during the process of news production in the context of overwhelming state power. In undertaking this examination, the study draws primarily on qualitative research methods, particularly observation and multi-layered individual in-depth interviews. As the study demonstrates, the interrogation of professionalism from the perspective of newsroom practices uncovers the complex manner in which professionalism is negotiated in the Gazette’s newsroom located in a country undergoing transition in Democracy. The study establishes that when measured against normative canons of journalistic professionalism the Gazette is deviating from such tenets as public service and watchdog journalism. As the study indicates, perhaps unbeknown to the respondents, the ruling ZANU PF party hegemony is reproduced at the Gazette through choice of news values such as sovereignty and patriotism all euphemisms for ruling party‘s slogans.

Abstract:
During French colonization, the world of prostitution in Tonkin evolved as the result of the numerous social and economic changes that were occurring at the time. The increasing mobility of the population led to rapid, significant urbanization: consequently, the city changed in form and in culture. Prostitution hence became increasingly visible. Its expansion was both quantitative and qualitative in the sense that prostitutes were no longer confined within the so-called spaces of “legal” brothels and were no longer perceived as being the only women capable of providing sexual services. In this regard, the world of prostitution is a critical vantage point which permits a far-reaching study of these global changes as well as a unique vantage point onto the complexity of colonization itself. This world was a microcosm of colonial society with its latent notions of racial hierarchy, inherent domination, and intimacy for colonization, and these all represent an intimate yet politically charged encounter. The racial boundaries delineated at the very foundations of the colonial order were therefore blurred and had to be redrawn and sharpened. The regulation of prostitution was one of the means used by authorities to control the interaction between the colonizers and the colonized because it reproduced the racial distinctions of the colonial society. The second dimension of the administration of prostitution was medical: because of venereal diseases, prostitution was perceived to be a threat to individuals and the nation as a whole. The regulation of prostitution thus was part and parcel of the policing strategies set up by the authorities to insure colonial order and public health. Nonetheless, its application proved to be difficult because prostitution, which was understood as construing both actors and places, resisted the police and medical frameworks that sought to confine them. Authorities’ attempts clashed with the evasive strategies of prostitutes, madams, clients, and others as well. In light of these issues, this study offers a thorough examination of the official frameworks and the reality of prostitution as it existed in colonial Tonkin

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine the media coverage of a police shooting in Bagarmossen, Stockholm. According to the news the police claimed it was an act of self-defense as a man fired a gun at them which is why the man was shot to death, but a month later stated that the man had not even been armed. The following study seeks to analyze the differences and similarities between articles published before and after the modified information. It also examines social actors present and how the media portrays them. We applied discourse analysis on sixteen news articles to answer our research questions. The prominent differences we found were in the portrayals of the incident and the most protrusive social actors involved. Before the police changed their statement, the man shot dead was portrayed as a criminal with deviant behavior. After the changed statement, the media portrayed him as a family man with strong ties to his hometown. The police were another social actor in our study, portrayed before the changed statements as efficient with a strong work ethic. After, the police were portrayed as dishonest and lacking severely in their communication as a legitimate authority. One of the similarities found before and after the changed statement was the presence of the local community as a social actor and its significance for the news media's portrayal of the incident.

Abstract:

A major purpose of this study is to describe and analyse representations of migration and migrants in three local Swedish newspapers, Arbetarbladet, Borås Tidning, and Vestmanlands Läns Tidning and one national, Dagens Nyheter, at eight selected years during the period of 1945 – 2005. The dissertation investigates continuity and change over the course of time. The study also traces how journalistic discourses relate to migration policies. The main focus is on the local papers and the interplay between local and national perspectives in expressing estrangement and national community. The main sample consists of 1 537 articles published in the first three weeks of March in the years 1945, 1955, 1965, 1975, 1985, 1995 and the year 2000.

Quantitative and qualitative approaches are combined and the study is carried out within the traditions of Critical Discourse Analysis and rhetoric. One theoretical approach rests on the notion of the stranger, as conceptualized by Georg Simmel. Closely linked to this notion are the concepts of nation, culture, and identity. One purpose is to analyse how these aspects are textualised and visualised.

Despite the changes of migration to Sweden, press coverage has demonstrated a remarkable consistency in the representations of immigrants and migration policy throughout the period. The analyses indicate that there is a continuous dialogue between the press and the government agenda. Albeit the consonance between the papers, it needs to be pointed out that representations of strangers are heterogeneous. In certain respects the local papers differ from the national paper. The Dagens Nyheter was more inclined to use a negative and a conflict angle. The local papers, promoting strong place identities, were more prone to stress co-operation and shared interests. The portrayal often draws on an implicit positive self-representation of Sweden. Nationhood is still a resonant element in journalism, a late echo, as it were, of the People’s Home.

Abstract:
The study examines the European coverage in four leading Nordic newspapers during two periods in 1993 and in 1996. During the first period, three countries were negotiating for membership in the European Union. During the second period, work on a new European Constitution was ongoing, to be negotiated by the Intergovernmental Conference at the end of the period. Two of the applicant countries, Finland and Sweden, were then members of the union since Jan 1, 1995. Voters in the third country, Norway, opted to stay outside the union. Norway is, however closely linked to the union by the previous EEA agreement. Finally, the fourth country, Denmark, had limited its longstanding membership in four important areas. Results of the main study in 1993 indicate a great difference in the degree of Europeanness of the coverage of European affairs, as indicated by the share of European issues, sources, players, institutions etc. The Danish paper, the Politiken, was on all counts genuinely European in its coverage. This could, to begin with, be understood in terms of a relational context - Denmark was a member of the European Community, the other countries were not. In 1996, as could be expected, the Norwegian paper, the Aftenposten, reduced its coverage of European affairs to about half the previous volume, the Finnish and Swedish papers, the Hufvudstadsbladet and the Dagens Nyheter, increased their volumes to new highs. The Danish paper maintained its previously comparatively high volume of European coverage, and was still distinctly more European in its outlook on transnational politics. This could be understood in terms of a new Maturity proposition - it may take a long time for the national media to come to terms with a new political environment. The study also puts forward the proposition that Danish political culture requires a different coverage of European affairs, and also requires an opportunity to discuss and evaluate European politics. On a theoretical level, the study supports the idea that national experience, historical and relational contexts influence media content. National agendas powerfully determine the orientation of transnational political communication . Three in-depth studies by and large confirm results from the content analysis. A separate exercise inspired by Grounded Theory gives rise to three theoretical concepts that seem to be fundamental dimensions of European political communication: Legitimacy (media coverage contributes to status conferral and encourages deliberation of cooperation as an idea), Participation (media coverage as expressions of intrinsical and instrumental motives for joining and taking responsibility towards European cooperation), and Mondialization/Universalism (media coverage of Europe's efforts in the global arena)

This research provides an approach was noticed about police work in Recife, from newspaper publications between the years 1850 and 1874. For contextual understanding of the topic, there was a trend that began with the perception of the city by their sociability spaces amid the civilizing process. Spaces such as streets, bridges, theater, bars, bookstores, library, assembled the scenery of the town, which meclava behavioral and social types. And the police have an important role in the continuing construction of the city's "progress." The analysis continues with the focus on police, pointing out the difficulties and improvements - especially in the Police - in the 1850, 1860, followed by the year of 1874. Based on this understanding, we can see the context in which the publications in journals, highlighting the political relations of these journals. Understanding the politics of that time, represent great importance to understand the criticism to the police, since this was one of the most visible state agencies therefore had direct daily contact with the population.

This assay aims to reveal how Minas Gerais police is represented in "Super Notícia", a popular journalism publication founded in 2002, which became the best selling newspaper in the country, although distributed only in cities of Minas. To evaluate the object of study, we used the content analysis procedures proposed by Laurence Bardin. Ninety one daily issues, published from April to June 2010, were analyzed. Starting with identity subjects and journalistic narratives, the study quotes authors of Cultural Studies, Symbolic Interaction and Theories of Journalism to show the importance of the media, especially journalism, in the process of helping to build social representations. The paper also presents the characteristics and trajectories of popular journalism in the country, to reach the way the police actions are represented in this type of press, specifically in the newspaper analyzed.

Abstract:
I clearly remember the case of the disappearance of Ciro Castillo and Rosario Ponce in the Colca Valley – Arequipa. It was the first police newsworthy event that caught my attention. Not because of the acts that happened, but because of the extensive follow-up that the journalistic press gave it. It took several months in which the faces of both protagonists monopolized covers, Sunday articles, chronicles, and endless journalistic corners. One of the main problems that was observed in the journalistic treatment of the event was that many loose ends were left at the time of reporting. A series of imprecise data was released that did not lead to the search for the truth. And it is precisely this that led to speculation becoming the main protagonist of the police act. For this reason, the present research aims to analyze the treatment of information, based on the phenomenon of speculation about the case of Ciro Castillo and Rosario Ponce on the web platform Ojo.pe over almost seven months. For this, the form and dimension in which the media used this resource that many authors consider as the main enemy of the journalistic career will be demonstrated. In the next pages, you will be able to know the origins, evolution and characteristics of police journalism; and the relationship with the concept of speculation in journalism, taking as an example Ojo.pe and its coverage of the disappearance of Ciro Castillo and Rosario Ponce. In addition to that, you will be able to reflect on the deficiencies in the professional ethics of those who, it is supposed, should always inform with the truth.

Abstract:
This thesis questions the intensity of the debates, controversies and polemics that revolve around the school question in France, by studying the speech developed in the general written press between 1959 and 2008, i.e. during the five decades when the domination of the stakes linked to the democratization of second-degree schooling and the affirmation of national general press as a framing authority of the intellectual debates meet. Based on the statistic analysis of important samples of a corpus of 8500 articles, this work seeks to link the content of these texts to the realities they claim to reflect, putting in relief the representations they contribute to work out and to mobilize. At the same time, it reviews the conditions of the treatment of information as shaped by the press – whose priorities and methods evolve – on a school matter with its specific identity stakes and current changes that affect in different ways the various categories of actors expressing themselves in newspapers

This research focuses on the controversy surrounding the exhibition and media publication of Brett Murray’s painting, The Spear of the Nation (May 2012). It takes the form of a qualitative Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), underpinned by Fairclough’s (1995) three-dimensional approach, to investigate how the contesting discourses articulated by the ruling political party (the ANC) and the news media have been negotiated in the City Press coverage in response to the painting. While the contestation was fought ostensibly on constitutional grounds, it arguably serves as an illustrative moment of the deeply ideological debate occurring in South Africa between the government and the national media industry regarding media diversity, transformation and democracy. It points to the lines of fracture in the broader political and social space. Informed by Foucault’s conceptualisation of discourse and the role of power in the production of knowledge and ‘truth’, this study aims to expose the discourses articulated and contested in order to make inferences about the various ‘truths’ the ANC and the media make of the democratic role of the press in a contemporary South Africa. The sample consists of five reports intended to represent the media’s responses and four articles that prominently articulate the ANC’s responses. The analysis, which draws on strategies from within critical linguists and media studies, is confined to these nine purposively sampled from the City Press online newspaper texts published between 13 May 2012 and 13 June 2012. Findings suggest the ANC legitimise expectations for the media to engage in a collaborative role in order to serve the ‘national interest’. Conversely, the media advocate for a monitorial press to justify serving the ‘public interest’. This research is envisioned to be valuable for both sets of stakeholders in developing richer understandings relevant to issues of any regulation to be debated. It forms part of a larger project on Media Policy and Democracy which seeks to contribute to media diversity and transformation, and to develop the quality of democracy in South Africa.

(in English) The aim of this diploma thesis is the discourse analysis of polish daily newspapers' portrayals of the so-called Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia in the last days of 1989. I have focused the analysis on every category of newspapers, which were officially published in Poland at that time. The selected questions are analyzed according to methods, which are mentioned in the theoretical part of this thesis, and everything is set into a historical context. Theoretic part is composed of the history of that period, the characterization of the polish media market in the 80s and the theory of propaganda, newspeak and discourse. In the practical part of this thesis there is the analysis which was made by the quantitative and qualitative method. The chief contribution is the determination of the exact quantity of the articles in monitored daily newspapers, the analysis of selected topics and the answers on the selected questions related to the role of propaganda, the differences (state vs. independent media; polish vs. american-polish newspapers; regional newspapers from northern Poland vs. southern Poland) among the articles in selected newspapers and the theme-orientation articles in the newspapers intended for soldiers, Catholics or teenagers. Abstract:
Abstract: This dissertation asks: Why do autocrats expand the freedoms enjoyed by their domestic media outlets when it would seem to be against their interests to do so? Some research suggests that private capital investments and other non-state sources of revenue are crucial to expanding the bounds of media discourse. I argue that private money alone cannot produce such developments, instead, increased press freedom can be observed when the economic reforms create the opportunity for a new class of entrepreneurs, interested in funding media ventures, to enter government. From this position they may push for opportunities to expand the media environment. Hosni Mubarak’s presidency in Egypt provides a useful lens to study changes in press freedom under autocracy. The introduction of private capital into the Egyptian newspaper industry in two recent decades resulted in different levels of press freedom. In the 1990s press freedom was unaffected by the influx of private money into this sector, but there was a marked increase in press freedom in the 2000s when a wave of new privately-owned dailies joined their state-owned counterparts on Egyptian newsstands. The introduction of economic reforms, especially privatization of state industries, created the opportunities for the expanded class of entrepreneurs to enter politics and the economic incentives to increase the freedom of the press. The dissertation expands our existing understandings of the political and economic context under which economic liberalizations can lead to political liberalizations. It suggests that political science can improve its understanding of these dynamics by considering individual political liberalizations, rather than just democratization, when seeking to understand the impact of economic reforms.

The economic rise of the ASEAN bloc as well as South Asia led by India represents enormous market potential, massive demand and business opportunities. As a result, the two regions have become favored destinations of foreign investment from countries such as the U.S., Japan and South Korea. Given that ASEAN countries are considered as emerging markets with tremendous potential, foreign investors are engaging fierce competition there. Rising labor costs, together with an anticipated economic slow-down in recent years, has resulted in overseas enterprises to relocate their productions sides or business offices from China to Southeast Asia or India. Even Chinese enterprises themselves are beginning to follow suit. In response, China has proposed a "One Belt, One Road" initiative in the hopes of leveraging the infrastructure projects therein into industry transformation and an expansion of international influence. Variables in international relations that are increasingly driven by economic and trade ties, and the regionalization of the global economy, make the continuous development of new diplomatic concepts all the more critical for Taiwan. With the change in ruling party in Taiwan in May 2016, President Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party has spearheaded a New Southbound Policy that aims to build more expansive ties with Southeast Asia and South Asia, consolidating Taiwan's position in the global economy. The policy guidelines of the New Southbound Policy passed in August of the same year explicitly set out the philosophy, short, medium and long-term goals, action guidelines and promotion framework of this policy. The policy will hopefully represent an important milestone in the regional development of Taiwan. Whether the government's actions or accomplishments to date in the promotion of the New Southbound Policy can be conveyed to the general population through Taiwan’s media and exert an influence on industry will play an important role in shaping Taiwan’s future. Leading domestic media outlets and the general population also differ in their response and opinions. In this study, content analysis and questionnaire surveys were used to examine the content of media reports related to the New Southbound Policy by Taiwan's top four newspapers (Apple Daily, Liberty Times, United Daily News, China Times) in terms of the themes, subjects, directions, country/region and sources of published content. Online surveys were also used to get an idea of how the New Southbound Policy is perceived by people in Taiwan and the influence of media reports. From the results of this study suggestions for improvements can be proposed to address the issues currently encountered during implementation of the policy.

Abstract:
This study is focusing on how the media feature the reorganization of the Swedish police authority during September 2016. More specifically, we have analyzed articles obtained from the two biggest daily newspapers in Sweden, namely Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. The purpose of this study is to examine how the media coverage portray the rearrangements within the Swedish police authority and broaden our knowledge about how the media choose to represent the Swedish police authority.   The approach of this study is based on analysis concepts from the critical discourse analysis (CDA). The theoretical frameworks of this study are the framing theory, the theory of news evaluation, and also media logic theory. With help from the method (CDA) nine themes were developed and used while analyzing the material. The analyze was completed with different tools such as operators, metaphors, implications, choice of words and the nine themes.   Based on the results from the analyze several conclusions can be made, for instance all of the articles include the theme criticism of the reorganization and there is in general a clear negative tone when reporting about the reorganization. The most visible operators were politicians and the national police chief that in several of the articles attack or accuse each other. In a lot of their statements they try to explain the reason for the worsening results or deny that the results has been affected by the reorganization. The articles contain several promises about future actions. None of the analyzed articles were classified as positive, but all 12 of them had a negative tone when writing about the reorganization.
