Abstract:
The Slavic Collection at the University of Manitoba comprises over 70,000 volumes of books, periodicals, newspapers, and microfilms. It was created in 1949 following the founding of the Department of Slavic Studies that same year. This article focuses on Polonica – the Polish-language materials – available in the collection, its provenance, and potential associated research themes. Four examples of works/bodies of works from the collection are examined as a case study, including two rare books, the Polish Amateur Theatre Pamphlet Collection, published between 1902 and 1947 in Poland and the United States, and the Polish-language newspaper “Czas”, which is the oldest surviving Polish-language newspaper in Canada. These unique resources reflect wider trends in the evolution of the Polish community in Manitoba, while serving as an illustration of collaboration between the Polish community and the UM academic institution.

“Tygodnik Powszechny” is one of the oldest and the most merited Polish newspapers. It went through at least two periods while it served as an oppositional newspaper. This oppositional and intelligent character gave the paper a specific status in the world of Polish media. At the same time, it was difficult for “Tygodnik Powszechny” to undergo the change required by contemporary free market. What is more, taking “Tygodnik Powszechny” as an example, one could observe the vast majority of changes which influenced Polish media in the course of the last several days. A combination of rich history, deeply rooted catholic tradition and modern trends create a completely new image of Cracowian newspaper

The article presents the attitudes of the two most important Poznań newspapers to the problem of shaping the Polish eastern border during the truce negotiations with Bolshevik Russia in Riga at the turn of September and October 1920. Both newspapers, despite representing different political orientations (democratic-national and conservative), supported the so-called “incorporation programme”, the implementation of which left a massive Polish population behind the eastern border. The author of the article tries to answer the question of why the newspapers, always defending the cohesion and the whole of the Polish nation, acted differently in the case of Poles left in Riga on the Bolshevik side of the border.

Abstract:
The article aims to reveal the position of the Latgalian press in the formation of the inhabitants’ public opinion of the Polish minority in Latgale (1920–1934). The basis of the research consists of around 50 articles published in the Latgalian newspapers. The research is based on the analysis of qualitative data, discourse-historical approach, using the detaching discursive construction of “we”–“they”, e.g., in the context of the article – “the Latgalians” – “the Polish”. In the early 1920s, the newspaper articles related to the Polish, mostly to the nobility, desiring to return the old good times, when the Polish was the dominating social group in Latgale. In the following years, the Polish were largely reflected as a minority disloyal to Latgalians and hostile to the Latvian state based on this ground. In many cases, the publications about the Polish minority are contradictory; while creating a negative image of the Polish, they are also called ‘faith brothers’ and thereby – allies.

Abstract:
The study fits within the scope of research on the media image of judges, which is part of a larger media image of the world. The relevance of the subject of research results from the position and significance of judges for the functioning of society and the state, as well as the interdependence between the functioning of the profession of judge, its prestige and the so-called public opinion. The aim of the article is a reconstruction of the image of the judge (its properties and relationships between these properties), the carrier of which are front pages of newspapers. Having found it reasonable to restrict the source base to paper issues of national daily newspapers representative for the Polish newspaper market, issued in 2022, the following three titles have been analysed: “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna”, “Gazeta Wyborcza” and “Nasz Dziennik”. These analyses allowed to: identify the properties attributed to judges in each periodical and structure them; observe the identity of the linguistic measures and devices used in the newspapers in question to shape the image of the judge and concurrently the different nature of images of the judge shaped on the front pages of the newspapers under research; conclude that, in all the titles examined, the images of the judge as a personal embodiment of the court (which is not always properly differentiated) are not a reflection of reality, but an interpretation thereof, and are a collection of subjective and emotionally related characteristics.

Abstract:
Political and Cultural Activism of Women As Seen in Handwritten and Printed Press in the Polish Enlightenment (Eighteenth Century) The rapid development of the press in the Republic of Poland in the eighteenth century enabled a much more efficient transfer of information. During the Enlightenment, the Polish press market was graced by a number of magazines the editors of which were guided by the goals of reforming, moralizing, and promoting scientific knowledge. At the same time, the old Polish social communication system based on the creation and sending of handwritten newspapers to recipients was still in operation. In various press outlets in the Republic of Poland in the second half of the eighteenth century, one can also find an ever‑growing amount of information devoted to women. In addition to pedagogical issues that were discussed in the Enlightenment, i.e., the upbringing and education of girls, information about women’s activities, which were diverse in their nature, spread more and more widely. Both in printed and handwritten newspapers, one can, above all, read about the achievements of women in the fields of politics and culture. Although Polish women in the eighteenth century had limited opportunities to act in politics and culture, resulting from the specificity of the Polish state system and from the dominance of men, their important role in these areas was often highlighted in the press. Press advertisements also allow us to conclude that literary works written by women could take root in social consciousness thanks to newspaper advertising.

The research material concerns the forms of address the structures or functions of which are specific compared to the Polish standard. The discussion focuses on the causes of their formation in the circumstances of language and cultural contacts and their functional and pragmatic peculiarities in the Polish language in Ukraine. The scale of the acceptability of the analysed forms of address in the Polish-centric communication community in Ukraine is identified by means of cultural and linguistic criteria for the evaluation of linguistic devices (while taking into consideration also a more extensive research material than the one found in newspapers).

Abstract:
The article analyzes the most important aspects of the ethno-cultural policy of the interwar Poland in relation to the indigenous East Slavic population of the Polesie region in the 1930s on the example of publications of the local Russian-language periodicals and the attitude towards them by the local Polish authorities. Particular attention is given to the newspaper Pod nebom Poles’ya, published in the Russian literary language in the late 1931 – early 1932 in Pinsk, Polesie Voivodeship of the interwar Poland. The publications in Pod nebom Poles’ya actively promoted the all-Russian identity and Russian culture, considering Belarusians, Ukrainians, and Russians from the point of view of the triune Russian people. In addition, the newspaper voiced cautious criticism of the national policy of the Polish authorities and the population census to encourage the local East Slavic population to preserve their language, culture, and national identity. Since the content of the publications in Pod nebom Poles’ya was unacceptable to the Polish authorities, striving for the complete and final Polonization of the Belarusian population of the eastern provinces of Poland, the local Polish administration pursued a policy of administrative pressure on the newspaper. As a result, Pod nebom Poles’ya was closed, despite its high popularity with the local people. A similar policy of administrative strangulation of objectionable Russian-language periodicals was carried out in relation to other newspapers of Polesie. Thus, the ethnocultural policy of the Polish administration in Polesie in the media sphere was based on in the systemic suppression of the Russian-language press, which defended the ideas of the civilizational unity of the East Slavic peoples.

Abstract The change of the law regarding the Institute of National Remembrance conducted by the right-wing government of Law and Justice in Poland probably led to the most serious diplomatic crisis in Polish-Israeli relations since their resumption in 1990. The whole situation has been widely described in the Polish and Israeli media. The role of this article is to analyse the content of two newspapers: Polish Gazeta Polska Codziennie and Israeli Israel Hayom, between 25 January and 31 March 2018. The two right-wing-leaning daily newspapers selected by the authors are perceived as not entirely objective due to open support for governments in their countries and as openly expressing their opinions, often in a controversial manner. It makes them a perfect case to compare the narrative about the diplomatic crisis between Poland and Israel.

Combining historical research and content analysis of thre guerrilla newspapers in the Visayas where the resistance was the strongest — the Leyte Samar Free Philippines, The Coordinator and Ang Tigbatas — the study analyzes how the guerilla newspapers kept the Filipino people informed about war developments and boosted their morale. With their emphasis on news, the guerilla newspapers, despite their lack of polish and limited resources, effectively met the needs of the Filipinos and countered the massive Japanese propaganda machinery.

AbstractThe article presents differences in describing sportspeople during the last four Olympic Games in terms of gender and nationality in Polish newspapers. The fundamental goal of the research was to perform the quantitative and qualitative comparison of press materials from four Olympics (Vancouver 2010, London 2012, Sochi 2014, Rio de Janeiro 2016). The content analysis was used for the quantitative part of the study and critical discourse analysis of two newspapers (the broadsheet and tabloid) in Poland for qualitative part. 712 media articles were analyzed. Our analysis has revealed significant underrepresentation of women and also differences in the description of rival competitors as well as overrepresentation of articles about Polish representatives during the Olympics. Those articles dwelt on the issue of nationality much more often and were more emotionally charged. Also, to a great extent, the performance of non-Polish women athletes was left unconsidered. The authors therefore indicate the validity of combining gender analysis and nationality in the context of the Olympic Games.

Abstract:
The article examines the publicistic polemic of 1919–1920 between the Social Democrats Volodymyr Starosolsky, Mykola Hankevych and Dmytro Dontsov on one side and the National Democrats Kost’ Levytsky, Pavlo Lysyak on the other about the Ukrainian-Polish understanding and the conclusion of the Treaty of Warsaw in 1920 between the Ukrainian People’s Republic and Poland. The main focus is on the polemic over the participation and role of Volodymyr Starosolsky in the Ukrainian-Polish negotiations. The object of the study is primarily the Lviv newspapers «Vpered/Forward», «Hromadska Dumka / Public Opinion», «Nova Rada/New Council» and the Vienna magazine «Ukrainskyi Prapor/Ukrainian Flag». To study newspaper articles and define the basic concepts of journalistic polemic, the methods of analysis, synthesis, comparative method and press clipping were used. Historical and logical methods were chosen to determine the objectivity of the facts stated by the polemists, as well as a biographical method to reveal the political activity of Volodymyr Starosolsky as the scholar and publicist.

Abstract:
The article discusses occurrences of topics related to Lviv in Polish opinion-forming newspapers in exile in the United States after World War II. The author followed the New Diaryin the years 1971–1999, together with its appendices, Polish Week (1971–1981) and Polish Review (1981–1999), published in New York. These titles had a wide scope of influence. The analysis of the newspapers’ contents revealed that a small, dispersed community from Lviv, who emigrated to the United States and centered around the Lviv Circle, made their works public regularly in the pages of the New Diary. However, compared with the incidence of the same themes in the Polish emigrants’ press in Western Europe during the same period, it was a marginal phenomenon about accidental topics. The texts mainly focused on unmasking the Soviet authorities’ actions to eliminate traces of Polish culture from Lviv, the devastation of the Lviv Eaglets Cemetery. Additionally, they posted pictures of the Poltva, poems devoted to the city, and anniversary reminiscences of the Lviv defense of 1918. Topics related to Lviv abroad were mostly the domain of its former citizens, who had been forced to leave the city without possibility of return (thanks to the provisions of the Yalta Conference)—journalists, academics, and activists in exile, regularly associated with magazines from the British Isles (the White Eagle, News, Polish Diary, and Soldier’s Diary) as well as Culture from Paris.

Abstract:
The article discusses the content of two Polish newspapers from the period the Duchy of Warsaw in terms of the presentation of the Catholic church and Catholicism. The press in the Napoleonic system fulfilled a propaganda function and its chief aim was not to inform, but to form the public opinion in accordance with the government’s expectations. Thus, the information about the Church was carefully controlled. The news which presented the authorities of the Duchy and Napoleon I in a positive light was highlighted, while the news which failed to do so was deemphasized or omitted. In the case of an entirely dependent duchy, but one that gave rise to the Polish state after the partitions, there was an additional factor involved: the effort to organize the Polish society around the idea of independence. For this reason, it was important to show both the patriotic attitude of the clergy as well as the godliness of the governors. This was aimed at convincing the society that the Duchy carried on the heritage of the pre-partition Commonwealth. As sources of historical data, both newspapers provide rich material illustrating numerous forms of patriotic engagement on the part of the Polish clergy in the restitution of the Polish state, as well as in social and political activity. Therefore, they are a valuable complement to the contemporary historical sources concerning the Napoleonic period in the Polish lands.

Abstract:
A short article serves as an introduction to the publication of unknown archival documents, which add vivid details to the ideas about I.S. Aksakov as an editor and publisher of Slavophile newspapers, established in historical science. The choice of texts for publication was due to two reasons: the coincidence of the 200th anniversary of Aksakov and the 160th anniversary of the Polish riot (1863–1864), as well as the fact that the published epistolary documents are addressed to a historical figure, Aksakov’s being acquainted with to much more late time – the end of the 1870s. Emphasizing the research interest in two topics (the history of Slavophil periodicals and the reflection of the Polish question in it), the author highlights the significance of 1863 in the biography of Aksakov and in the existence of his newspaper Den’. The article gives a brief overview of the content of the surviving 13 letters to N.P. Ignatiev (1832–1908) and makes the necessary clarifications on the subject of the letters of 1863 (Polish question, public life, the fight against censorship). In the appendix to the article, three letters from Aksakov to Ignatiev were published for the first time.

To recall the history of education, for example in the period of the Second Polish Republic, it is necessary to resort to many sources. One of them, extremely important, are newspapers, which help to reconstruct discussion about some essential issues in a given period. Głos Szkoły i Rodziny periodical was issued in Płock in the years 1925-1926. The periodical was meant as a space for discussions and exchange of experiences about the family and school cooperation. While this aim may not have been reached, the newspaper is an interesting record of the history of education between 1918 and 1939, especially on the topic of the influence of the family home on school and vice versa.

FROM THE PRESS HISTORY OF THE LARGEST INDUSTRIAL PLANTS IN WROCŁAW AND THE SURROUNDING AREA 1946–1990The author presents a historical overview of company newspapers published in Wrocław and two nearby towns — Brzeg Dolny and Jelcz-Laskowice — where large industrial plants employing thousands of people living in the Lower Silesian capital were located. The article consists of two parts. In the first the author quotes the definition of company press, discusses its function and on the basis of figures from Ruch Wydawniczy w Liczbach [Polish Publishing in Figures] from 1968–1992 presents the publication frequency and geography of such publications with regard to the whole country. Part two is devoted to company newspapers published in the region referred to in the title. Drawing on an analysis of archive material kept in the State Archives in Wrocław, especially documents produced by the Regional Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party in 1971–1978, the author examines the party nature of these publications and the requirements imposed on their editorial teams. Easter Rising in the Polish Press (Political Commentaries)The author of the paper describes the ways in which the Polish press were informed about the Easter Rising, sources of gaining this knowledge (Reuters Agency and European daily newspapers); particularly, he makes analysis of political commentaries which were published in Warsaw, Cracow and Lvov newspapers. He shows a specific character of Polish reaction to the events in Ireland, which was rooted in the analogy of historical destiny of both nations, and gained a particularly strong resonance on the turn of April and May 1916. The author points out to the causes of this resonance of which a gradual change in the attitude of the Polish society towards Germany was the most important. The permission of German authorities-in-occupation for a great national manifestation in Warsaw on 3 May 1916 strengthened the orientation towards the central states which was evidenced by the participation of the political figuring on Germany in this event. Reports of the fall of the uprising in Ireland and the accompanying commen aries coincided with comprehensive accounts of manifestation celebrating 125th ann versary of 3rd May Constitution, which was of significant importance for the reception of the Easter Rising. Emotional stress in Warsaw, strongly stimulating patriotic feelings, created an extremely emotional attitude towards the uprising in Dublin experienced by Poles as a charter almost from their history.

On 26 April 1994, the Lithuanian and Polish presidents signed in Vilnius the Treaty between the Republic of Lithuania and the Republic of Poland on friendly relations and good neighbourly cooperation. The Lithuanian press devoted much attention to the progress of negotiations in drafting this document and to its ratification by the Lithuanian Seimas in October 1994. During 1993–1994, the Lithuanian newspapers Lietuvos rytas, Respublika, Lietuvos aidas, Tiesa, Kurier Wileński, also several smaller newspapers, such as Voruta, Gimtasis kraštas, Atgimimas, SSI, Amžius, published the articles devoted to a discussion of the Lithuanian-Polish relations. This publication aims at conducting an analysis of the Lithuanian press and reviewing the articles devoted to the drafting, signature and ratification of the Treaty between the Republic of Lithuania and the Republic of Poland on friendly relations and good neighbourly cooperation, as well as to the political situation in Lithuania at the time of the drafting and signature of the mentioned agreement.

Abstract:
This article aims to illustrate the initial weeks of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, as well as the preceding period, through press photography displayed on the front pages of two influential Polish daily newspapers, “Gazeta Wyborcza” and “Rzeczpospolita”, from February 1 to March 31, 2022. Research method: The study utilizes visual framing theory, a less commonly applied approach in visual research compared to classical framing analysis and not as extensively discussed in media studies. Results: The investigation reveals that “Gazeta Wyborcza” and “Rzeczpospolita” did not significantly differ in their daily visual representation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Both newspapers predominantly featured photographs highlighting the conflict frame. Frames focusing on political leadership and military aspects were less prominent. High saturation of photography with the frame of human interest was revealed. Originality/Cognitive value: This article contributes to the understanding of how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is depicted in the non-verbal content of leading Polish dailies.

Abstract:
38 newspaper editions of the Zhytomyr region during the Second World War (1939-1945) was selected as the object of the study. The subject of the study is the conditions of origin of newspapers, the peculiarities of their operation and time of publication, as well as the features of the materials of these publications. Research methods are traditional analysis (qualitative); historical method; logical method; synthesis; generalization. It is expedient to divide newspaper editions into legal editions of the Ukrainian independence movement; official German publications; underground Soviet publications; underground nationalist publications. After the occupation, the first newspapers began to appear in the Zhytomyr region in late summer and early autumn 1941, and the most were influenced by the independence movement. Immediately, the occupying German authorities, using censorship, launched a propaganda campaign about the benefits of the "new order". From the end of November 1941, the publications came under the control of the occupying German government and became its main information and propaganda body. One of the tools of alternative propaganda influence on the local population was the underground Soviet periodicals. For some time an underground nationalist publication was published in the region but had no significant impact on the population. Since 1944 (the time of the return of the Soviet army) all publications of the Ukrainian independence movement, the German official press and nationalist periodicals have ceased to be published. Only one of the underground pro-Soviet newspapers, which became official, continued to be published. Comparison of the number of publications on the territory of Zhytomyr region in the war, pre-war and post-war periods gives grounds to hypothesize that the possible dependence of the number of publications from the degree of freedom of the press. The study of foreign language periodicals, in particular in Polish, remains promising.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the first public discussions of the last decade of the 20th century about mass murders of Polish population in Volhynia in 1943. The author explores the emergence of the topic of “Volhynia” in the public space and Polish-Ukrainian historical debates about these mass murders in the 1990s. The research is based on the published sources and interviews with the participants in the Polish-Ukrainian dialog. The article focuses on the first mentions of the Volhynian events in the post-communist period, on the way this issue was discussed at seminars of Polish and Ukrainian historians, and in the leading Polish newspapers “Gazeta Wyborcza” and “Rzeczpospolita”. Particular attention is paid to the discussion about the mass murders in the “Gazeta Wyborcza” in 1995. The Volhynian issue appeared in the public space after almost fifty years of silence initiated from the Polish “kres” and veteran circles which represented the victims of the mass murders. This topic was arousing interest gradually. It did not immediately take a lead- ing place in Polish-Ukrainian historical debates. In the 1990s, the discussion about “Volhynia” took place primarily between historians and within the groups to which this topic was important. There was only one discussion about the Volhynian events in the press, namely in the “Gazeta Wyborcza”. This newspaper, which appeared as an organ of Solidarity, pays attention especially to the relationship between Poland and its neighbours, particularly Ukraine. In the Ukrainian central media, the Volhynian issue remained completely without attention. Although the debates about “Volhynia” were not actively conducted in the 1990s, certain tendencies were established during this period, which remained characteristic in the following years. In Poland, these events were perceived as one of the most traumatic episodes of the national history, so it was the Polish side who initiated the discussions about this topic. The Ukrainian side was forced to respond to these initiatives.

The aim of the article is to show some deviations from the Polish nationwide rules in selected polite expressions in the written text on a large amount of research material (over two thousand units), extracted from almost half a thousand issues of Polonia newspapers, published in Ukraine in the 21st century. What is analysed are some peculiarities of the structure of these units against the background of their pragmatic Polish nationwide equivalents, their functions in the press text of the inherited Polish language, and the communication capabilities both within and without the studied communicative community. The influence of Ukrainian polite expressions on the studied expressions of inherited Polish language is evaluated. The research results give rise to a reflection on the issue of differential acceptability — against the background of the general standard — of the features of the linguistic label in the inherited Polish language in Ukraine.

Photography has a long history of (de-)legitimation of wars. In this paper we examine the visual rhetoric of two newspapers, the British Guardian and the Polish Gazeta Wyborcza in their representation of the Palestinian-Israeli war in October 2000. Although both newspapers have access to the same (agency) photographs, their images differ. Both papers show the Palestinians to be the main victims of the war. However, Gazeta Wyborcza depicts the Palestinians predominantly as “terrorists” and deflects any military responsibility from the Israelis by not including any photographs of the Israeli soldiers. The Guardian shows the Palestinians predominantly as romanticised, lone heroes against the Israeli military might, although the Israeli military force is vague and de-personalised. Furthermore, both newspapers differ in their representation of the war in political terms choosing different images of local and international politicians.

Abstract:
In the period 1935–1939, following the death of head of state Marshal Piłsudski, the Polish national government adopted a more authoritarian and nationalist stance. Piłsudski had been considered by some Polish Jews as a protector of national and religious minorities. After his death in May 1935, institutional antisemitism experienced a dramatic increase. In the public sphere, certain newspapers regularly featured antisemitic “news reports,” opinion pieces and cartoons of an extreme nature. The newspaper ABC, for instance, advocated boycotts of Jewish businesses and shops, listing them by name, and encouraged Jewish emigration. In universities, the increasing discrimination against Jews has been well documented. Most Polish universities instituted restrictions on the number of Jewish students they would admit, or else barred them altogether. The education ministry willingly turned a blind eye to the admission policies of the university authorities. At the beginning of the academic year 1938–1939, for example, only three students in the first year of medical studies in Lwów (less than 1% of the new intake) were Jews, and none in Kraków. After discussing antisemitism in newspapers and universities in the late 1930s, this article will examine documents held in the State Archive of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast (DAIFO) concerning relations between the Jewish communities in the Stanisławów region, and the district, provincial and national authorities, including the national Ministry for Religious Denominations and Public Enlightenment. Much of this documentation concerns the town of Dolina. With the backing of the district authorities, an attempt was made to install as assistant rabbi in the town a certain Ksyel Juda Halberstam. This move was strongly opposed by many members of the Dolina Jewish community, as well as by its senior rabbi. The correspondence sheds light on the protracted struggle between the different parties until the assistant rabbi was finally installed in late 1938. These files on the Dolina episode highlight the desire on the part of the authorities to control the rabbis, and through them the members of their communities. Information was systematically gathered on all the rabbis in the province, with particular emphasis on their moral behaviour, their perceived loyalty to the state, and their fluency in the Polish language. These actions, in turn, reflect an underlying suspicion over the extent of the rabbis’ “Polishness” and a fear, in an era of growing nationalism, of “antinational” behaviour. Such suspicions of loyalty were particularly marked where rabbis were thought to have Zionist links.

Abstract:
The present study examines the image of Wojciech Korfanty as Polish voting commissioner in Upper Silesia in the reporting of four German liberal daily newspapers (Berliner Tageblatt, Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, Frankfurter Zeitung, Kölnische Zeitung) from the Weimar Republic. Initially trying to accompany him with a certain distance and prejudice and to give him actual recognition for his rhetorical skills and skilful propaganda activities, Korfanty quickly became the preferred object of German attacks and the third uprising, the intensity and vehemence of the appropriate criticism reached an unimagined level. It cannot be overlooked that during this time the press constantly tried to counter Korfanty himself and his actions with disavowing reports. He thus rose to become the protagonist of German agitation in Upper Silesia and remained continuously the centre of attention of German attacks. A look at the German liberal newspapers based on the results obtained shows an extremely one-sided and unreservedly negative image of Wojciech Korfanty as the Polish voting commissioner, who terrorized the (German) population in Upper Silesia with his activities and terrified them. But in the statements he was not only associated with hate speech, murder and agitation. In the course of his activities in the voting area, he was seen with his intentions and demands as the embodiment of the Polish dismemberment efforts, who only wanted to cause suffering and damage to the whole Upper Silesian country.

In this article, the authors present the results of their research conducted in Polish and German online media in 2016. The major topic of the abovementioned research was the European refugee crisis in Poland and Germany and its representation in websites of four quality newspapers: Wyborcza.pl, Rp.pl, Faz.net and Sz.de. The aim of this article is to analize the role of media in public opinion-shaping in both countries. Through a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the data, the authors answered the following questions: 1) Are the media narratives of both countries different from each other? b) If so, how is the migration problem presented in Poland and in Germany? c) What are their most noticeable features? Among the most important conclusions are the following: 1) The media coverage of both countries is highly politicized; 2) Neither German nor Polish journalists of the opinion-forming quality newspapers did measurably support an isolationist policy. The research has been conducted within the scope of an International project called LEMEL (L’Europe dans les médias en ligne). This program was initiated by Cergy-Pontoise University and is now held annually. Several European countries participate in it (scientists from France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania are permanent members of the project’s research group). The aim of the project is a synchronous and diachronic comparative analysis of the content presented in their respective national online media. The analysis focuses on the way Europe and its problems are presented in the abovementioned media content.

Abstract:
The life and activity of the publicist, journalist and researcher Bohdan Osadchuk is a meaningful example of activities for the inter-civilisation dialogue. He was born in Galicia, which belonged to the Second Polish Republic, and he always treated Polish and Ukrainian cultures as his own. Osadchuk’s efforts to strengthen Polish-Ukrainian relations and understanding, as well as his cooperation with Jerzy Giedroyc, editor-in-chief of the Paris-based journal Kultura [Culture], which was unique in terms of content and influence, were of particular importance. The author of this article has collected and analysed little-known and so far undiscovered facts and previously unavailable archival documents. Bohdan Osadchuk grew up in a multicultural environment. Professing liberal values, he condemned all chauvinism. He managed to combine the identity of a Ukrainian emigrant with that of a European democrat. For seventy years, he lived in Berlin (1941–2011), where he graduated from the university and became recognised as a journalist Alexander Korab. He was known under this pseudonym to readers of German newspapers and the oldest Swiss daily newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung for decades. For over half a century, he wrote for this authoritative newspaper about the events in the Soviet Union, Poland, Ukraine and the countries of the socialist bloc. Moreover, when actively cooperating with German radio and television, he introduced Polish and Ukrainian issues to the media discourse. The communist special services of the People’s Republic of Poland and the Soviet Union hunted Bohdan Osadchuk, watched him and tried to recruit him. But he was playing his own game and was not fooled. This article also describes Osadchuk’s scientific achievements that he gained as a professor at the Free University of Berlin (Freie Universität Berlin) and the Ukrainian Free University in Munich, as well as the author of fundamental publications. Moreover, the circumstances of the last years of Osadchuk’s life, which ended in Poland, are presented for the first time.

Abstract:
The serialized novel in the Pałuczanin newspaper from Żnin 1927–1939In the history of the Polish press of the interwar period, a provincial publishing center located in Żnin, in Pałuki region, played a major role. In the 1930s, Żnin was home to a dynamically developing press company, offering high-circulation titles of nationwide coverage Moje Powieści, Moja Przyjaciółka. The first step towards the creation of the future Publishing House of Alfred Ksycki was the establishment of the Pałuczanin newspaper in 1927, which formed the basis for subsequent publishing initiatives. The periodical, including a few supplements, was edited in accordance with the principle of “everything for everyone”, and signalled the upcoming era of mass press. One of the ways of acquiring new readers, was the printing of novels in episodes, which started already in the first issue of the newspaper with a mini rural novel by Stanisław Kluczek, a folk writer of sensational historical novels. The newspaper featured 30 other popular novels from authors associated with the region Wanda Brzeska, Jan Andrzej Kraśny, Alojzy Kuzio, Franciszek Ksawery Tuczyński, but also those known from 19th-century French newspapers Émile Richebourg, Jules de Gastyne. Abstract:
In the late nineteenth century British culture, politics and history were customary topics in Polish newspapers, and Shakespeare's dramas were the most often performed classic texts on the Warsaw theatre stage. However, in this paper focusing on Warsaw seasons 1814/1815–1900/1901 I demonstrate that surprisingly one can hardly talk about any form of cultural transfer between the British and Polish popular theatre and drama in that period. The analysis of the Warsaw repertoire, travel recollections to the United Kingdom and press articles, reveal that even though the Polish nation treated the UK as a point of reference, it consistently rejected the British theatre at large and theatre entertainment in particular, and considered it ‘crude’ and in bad taste. I claim that the geopolitical situation of Poland cannot alone account for this puzzle.

Abstract:
In Ukraine, media of national minorities support the principles of civil society, tolerance and social stability. Therefore, the analysis of activity of media of national minorities, especially Polish minority in Prykarpattia, is the task of this article. A key method of the research is the comparative critical analysis of the activities of public organizations and private media of Polish minority in the Pre-Carpathian region. The author argues that registered periodicals and radios of Polish national minority in the Pre-Carpathian region develop the cultural and ethnical identity of this minority. Polish-speaking and bilingual newspapers and magazines of Pre-Carpathian region are important factors, which help to preserve and publicly express identity, reveal the uniqueness of traditions, and the degree of assimilation. Permanent publishing of government-approved periodicals of Polish national minority develops the feeling of equality and gives the opportunity for its representatives to realize cultural demands. In general, we can say that media of national minorities raise awareness of society, promoting national reconciliation, mutual understanding between people, and development of society.

THE US LIBERAL PRESS ABOUT THREE ULTIMATUMS TO LITHUANIA (1938–1940) The article seeks to reveal how the information about the ultimatums served to Lithuania (by Poland in 1938, by Germany in 1939, and by the Soviet Union in 1940) was reflected in the US press, how it used Lithuania’s official sources, how the American press evaluated the information, and whether the US press was on the side of Lithuania or not. Four American newspapers (The New York Times, The New York Herald Tribune, The Washington Post, and The Chicago Daily Tribune) and two American Lithuanian newspapers (Vienybė and Dirva) were selected for the study. Although the information provided in the US press was accurate, it avoided assessments of the events. Like the US government, the press pursued more isolationist policy towards Lithuania. Although the events in Lithuania received considerable attention from the local press, the US newspapers hardly ever used Lithuanian information sources officially. Abstract:
The article analyzes the views of leading Czech public and political fi gures and publicists on the prerequisites, course, features and potential consequences of the Polish uprising of 1863, which broke out on the territory of the Kingdom of Poland and the Belarusian-Lithuanian provinces of the Russian Empire. Most Czech newspapers, initially striving for objective coverage of the uprising, soon completely switched to pro-Polish positions. This was explained both by the infl uence of Polish propaganda and by the position of the Western European press, which supported the Polish insurgents. At the same time, a number of leading Czech politicians, including the famous historian F. Palacky and F. Rieger, criticized the Polish uprising, noting that the plans of Polish politicians to include vast Ukrainian and Belarusian lands in the future Poland are unfair. In addition, Palacky sharply criticized the Polish rebels for their radicalism and the use of terror methods. According to Palacky, the Polish uprising was initially doomed to failure and was a colossal misfortune for all Slavic peoples, since objectively only opponents of the Slavs and Russia benefi ted from it. Similar criticism of the Polish uprising was made by a number of Czech scholars and publicists, including F. Jezbera and J. Rank. The ideological struggle and controversy surrounding the Polish uprising politicized Czech public opinion and contributed to the split of the previously unifi ed Czech national party into Old Czechs and Young Czechs.

Abstract:
The Tumult and Confederation: Religious Significance of the Toruń 1724 and 1767 Events in the Light of Contemporary Manuscript Newsbooks In the eighteenth century, the town of Toruń, which was politically, religiously, and demographically dominated by Protestants, became twice the nucleus of a countrywide rebellion. The first insurgency occurred in 1724, when the town became the place of religious riots known as the Toruń tumult. The second rebellion appeared in the form of the dissident Crown Confederation of Toruń in 1767, which was founded in response to a Catholic confederation organized in Radom. Both incidents had meaningful impact on the overall situation in Poland-Lithuania. One can find information on these disturbances in contemporary political writings and press. In particular, we find interesting opinions about the Toruń tumult in handwritten newspapers, the only source of news in the Polish territory before the establishment of the first printed newspaper in 1729.

Abstract:
This study examines how newspapers in post-communist Poland nurture a gendered national identity through their disparate coverage of men’s and women’s European basketball championships. Agenda-setting, framing and social identity theories were used to analyse 502 articles published between 2009–2013. Results show that men’s tournaments received 3.5 times more coverage than women’s events; the gap further widened when Poland hosted the championships. Articles about men’s championships were also longer (314 words on average versus 161). The discourse surrounding women’s competitions was factual whereas the men’s national team’s performances were framed as challenges, matters of national pride, and involved combat and military terminology. Peculiarly, the most frequently mentioned member of the women’s team was its male coach. Findings indicate a significant departure from the communist-era promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment as a source of pride. National identity is nurtured through newspaper coverage of the men’s national team (when team colours and the first person plural are mentioned) but not of the women’s national team.

Abstract:
The Polish year 1989 through the perspective of Czechoslovak opinion-forming daily press The main goal of this article is to show the image of the most important Polish political actions in 1989 through the prism of Czechoslovak opinion-forming daily press: Rudé právo and Mladá fronta. The author is focused on the analysis of materials generally connected with the deliberations of the Round Table, as well as the Polish legislative election on 4 June. It is desirable to disclose the way of presenting of the most important actions in Poland by the Czechoslovak press in that period, which we have mentioned above. The author also tries to determine how acute was the attention of the press to the Polish events that had taken place during those times. The newspapers, that are analysed, were controlled by Czechoslovak Rule and they were medium of its current views. According to this fact we could emphasize one of the elements in the sphere of the official relations between Poland and Czechoslovakia in relation in the year 1989. We could also reconstruct the Polish situational image which was presented to Czechoslovak citizens by the Czechoslovak authorities.
