Review of a new book on the struggle for imperial succession in Central Europe after the end of the First World War by German historian J. Böhler. Constructing new national identities in the “borderlands” of three collapsed empires involved political and armed conflict among several national projects. The restored Polish State was at the “center of events”, while no single Polish nation existed in 1918, according to J. Böhler.

From Justinian Law to the Civil CodeSummary The Justinian model, limiting the heir’s liability for inherited debt by means of benefit of the inventory, found a lasting place in the later private jurisprudence and received confirmation in the modern age codification of the civil law (ABGB, Napoleonic Code, BGB). Created in the Justinian code, beneficium inventarii was also adopted in the Polish succession law. Abstract Public opinion, foreign policy, and the end of the War of the Spanish SuccessionDid public opinion have an impact on foreign policy in early modern times? States put in much effort publicly to legitimize their foreign policy. But they did not always prevent open discussion. England during the War of the Spanish Succession is a case in point. The revolution of 1688-9, the growing influence of parliament on foreign policy, opportunities for political journalism, and different views about how to end the war made public debate a matter of political importance. To assess the possible impact of these reductions on lowland tropical rain-forests, we exposed seedlings of three species of the family Moraceae to various combinations of day and night conditions under reduced light. The species represent three stages in tropical rain-forest succession: Cecropia obtusifolia is an early-successional pioneer, Trichospermum mexicanum is a mid-successional tree, and Brosimum alicastrum is a late-successional tree of mature-phase forests.

Abstract Poland's post-1956 cultural liberalizations sat uneasily in the midst of a Cold War binary that equated avant-gardism with artistic freedom and socialist realism with aesthetic coercion. During 1960––61, Polish composers and critics debated the seeming paradox of official support in Poland for avant-garde aesthetics. Their disputes arose after the premiere of Henryk Mikołłaj Góórecki's Scontri (Collisions) for Orchestra, op. 17, at the 1960 Warsaw Autumn Festival; disrupted the General Assembly of the Polish Composers' Union in December 1960; and persisted in the journal Ruch Muzyczny

This thesis draws on psychoanalytic theories of trauma to interrogate works produced by Polish photographers after the Second World War. The aim of this thesis is to excavate traces of trauma latently embedded in post-war Polish art photography. By closely analysing a selection of photographs produced between the years 1945 and 1970, I argue that the events of the war cast a shadow over the lives of Polish artists. Rather than looking at photographs which directly visualise these traumatic events, I explore the ways in which these experiences manifest themselves indirectly or obliquely in the
