Abstract:
The current paper is devoted to the analysis of sarcasm as a breach of principles of politeness. The aim of the paper is to elicit the peculiarities of sarcasm as an exception to the Politeness Principle suggested by G. Leech (2014) and its conversational function incorporated into the Irony Principle as mock politeness. The Politeness Principle demonstrates that sarcasm is apparently its exploitation as in the case of sarcastic utterances the illocutionary goal opposes the social goal thus providing breach in the model of politeness. The Irony Principle illustrates an explanation of polite utterances appearing as impolite arguing that polite interpretations of such utterances are unsustainable. To support the theory certain examples are analyzed retrieved from an American Depression-era author John Dos Passos’s novel “1919”. As a matter of fact, the debate is around the question whether sarcasm is an apparent exploitation of polite implicature of utterances or it is a category of impoliteness appearing as mock politeness.

Language plays an important role in human life as a medium of communication. The communication between sender and receiver is the activity of conveying ideas, messages, attitude, and mood of both speakers and hearers. This paper attempts to analyze cooperative principle (CP) and politeness principle (PP) in guest complaining at x hotel in Kuta-Bali through a series of conversation at the front desk. The data were gathered from guest’s conversation record book from one of the hotels in Kuta-Bali. The conversations have been transcribed into a written text. The intended data were identified, classified, and then separately analyzed based on cooperative and politeness principle. A qualitative descriptive analysis was employed to analyze CP and PP in the guest complaining as in line with the theories which are proposed by Grice and Leech. The results of analysis show that the receptionist carefully observed both CP and PP, but the guest’s responses might not necessarily comply with those principles for some reasons. Abstract:
Abstract Back in the early 1990s, Gu Yueguo formulated the Politeness Principle and its maxims to explain Chinese politeness phenomena, as a counter reaction to Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory, which claims that politeness is a universal phenomenon in language usage. Despite the fact that Gu’s illustration of politeness phenomena in Chinese has attracted considerable attention from pragmaticians, this paper points out that there are at least three major issues in his study: failure to provide a generalized high-level definition of politeness, improper construction of some of the maxims, and inadequate adoption of Leech’s theoretical framework for analysis of Chinese data. With the increasing call for culture-specific research on im/politeness, it is of great necessity to rethink these issues regarding Chinese politeness phenomena. Therefore, this paper attempts to reconstruct the Politeness Principle in Chinese by reexamining and clarifying Gu’s approach. It argues that politeness can be defined as appropriate behavior in social interaction. Based on this definition, the Politeness Principle and four maxims of Modesty, Respectfulness, Friendliness, and Refinement are coherently reconstructed in a clarified and refined form. The reconstruction demonstrates that polite behavior in Chinese is exhibited in an appropriate or acceptable way in accordance with these maxims as social norms or regularities.

Abstract:
Talk shows on television today are programs that are of interest to television viewers in Indonesia. One of the talk shows that television viewers are interested in is the talk show Rumah Uya Trans7. The show is easily followed by the viewers. The speech acts used in the show are light and easy to understand. Another interesting issue is the speech acts are a violation of the politeness principle. Yet, this violation of the politeness principle is the one that makes the television viewers pay attention to the show. These violations of the politeness principle are very interesting to be analyzed. To find out the violation of the politeness principle in the show, the researcher used the theory of pragmatics and descriptive qualitative method. Data of this research were taken from the fragments of the show in the Rumah Uya Trans7 in November 2018. The source of the data was the speech acts in the program which contained violation of the politeness principle. The method of the research was the observation method (simak bebas libat cakap) and recording as well as note-taking techniques to collect the data. The result of the analysis showed that violation of politeness principle was found in the show in the form of violation of maxim of tact, maxim of sympathy, maxim of agreement, maxim of modesty, maxim of approbation, and maxim of feeling reticence. The suggestion for the deepening of the research is the existence of further research in violation of the politeness principle of similar shows but different television station as e media.

Abstract:
In the Japanese language, Keigo refers to the politeness in language that one must adhere to during interactions with native speakers. Japanese language students are obliged to pay attention to this principle and behave politely in spoken communication. In the Javanese language, the manner in which speech is delivered, undha usuk, comprises a variety of registers applied to different social contexts, such as krama (High or formal Javanese) and ngoko (Low or vernacular Javanese). Still, other politeness principles are to be taken into account. This study, driven by such a concern, was devoted to examining politeness violations in communications between 108 university students, most of whom were native Javanese speakers. The politeness principle was employed to unravel the issue. Data were collected by recording conversations between participants and native Japanese speakers. A follow-up interview with each subject was also conducted. The results revealed that most students failed to build intercultural communication in Japanese conversation, due to their lack of socio-pragmatic knowledge. Based on the interview results, in daily communication, the students rarely used the Javanese speech act level of krama, instead using basa ngoko or Indonesian. These findings emphasize the socio-pragmatic concept, and more precisely the politeness principles other than the Keigo style, to students. This should minimize the violation of politeness maxims in the Japanese language.

Abstract:
Recently, there are limited specific researches on the pragmatic strategies of teachers' criticism from the angle of the Politeness Principle, among which most of them argue that teachers should adopt appropriate politeness strategies when criticizing students. However, only a few researchers point out that Leech's Politeness Principle is "other" oriented and neglects "self," which is too absolute, ideal, and unsuitable in teacher and student relations. In this paper, the author illustrates the true nature of politeness in teacher-student relations is that teachers should pay attention to self, show politeness to the students, and consider the third party (parents). Finally, the writer illustrates some politeness strategies, including criticizing with a sense of humour, criticizing in vague language, adopting empathy and showing politeness to a third party to show appropriate politeness to the students to make the criticism effective. The purpose is to make some middle school teachers recognize how to criticize appropriately.

Abstract:
This paper elaborates the notion of politeness as a pragmatic concept and attempts to find answers regarding the strategies followed to achieve a polite act within a course of communication. Both the speaker and the hearer tend to act politely (in accordance to their beliefs regarding a polite act) and expect to be treated alike. However, the type of politeness considered in this paper is different from that of a culture-based concept. Pragmatic Politeness consists of following a number of principles and maxims in accordance to a particular context. Both types of the concepts are connected to the notion of ‘face’ which refers to the image that both the speaker and hearer desire to save, whenever they are intercommunicating. The face saving of interlocutors requires the adaptation of Leech’s Politeness principle and maxims. This paper examines both ‘direct’ and ‘indirect’ strategies to approach politeness in Donald Trump’s political intercommunications verify or nullify common claims that politeness is achieved throughout indirect methods. The paper hypothesizes that both strategies are applicable to fulfill a communicative polite behavior on the basis of proper context.

Abstract:
As a great representative of the British realism literature in the 19th century, Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist is set in foggy city London, but reflects the complex social reality in that time. Many domestic scholars studied and analyzed this novel from different perspectives, while most of them paid much attention to the literature translation and analysis of the characters’ image, few studied it from the perspective of pragmatic theories. In view of it, this paper selects plenty of dialogues from the novel and they are classified and analyzed on the basis of Grice’s Cooperative Principle and Leech’s Politeness Principle. After analyzing the characters’ conversational implicature, this paper aims to provide a linguistic reference for the appreciation of characters’ image and social significance of the novel. The paper consists of introduction, main body and conclusion three parts. Introduction part gives a simple introduction of the author Charles Dickens and the novel, then states the previous researches on the subject as well as the research angle, goal and method. The body (consists of two chapters) firstly gives a detailed introduction of the theoretical framework, then analyzes the selected dialogues on the basis of Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle respectively. Conclusion part puts forward that people always express their ideas indirectly and implicitly in their speech communication to violate the Cooperative Principle, that is out of consideration of politeness to others, namely observing Politeness Principle.

Abstract:
Politeness is considered to promote effective interaction between people. In the process of language teaching and learning, it is believed to enhance learning by providing a lively and friendly atmosphere in the classroom (Jiang, 2010). During classroom periods, including class policy, activities, and techniques, a teacher’s language plays a critical role; it also plays an important role while giving academic instructions, motivating the class, and during the evaluation of a student’s performance and participation. This paper approaches classroom interaction from a pragmatic perspective by adopting Leech’s politeness principle and maxims. It aims to answer the following 2 questions: first, “what are the teachers’ attitudes toward the implementation of the politeness principle during classroom interactions?” and second, “what are the students’ attitudes toward the implementation of the politeness principle during classroom interactions?” To achieve the aims of this study by finding answers to the questions, the researcher prepared 2 sets of questionnaires: 1 for the teachers in the English Department and 1 for the fourth year students in the same department at the College of Basic Education, Salahaddin University-Erbil, Erbil, Iran, for the academic year of 2018 to 2019. By analyzing the data collected, it was found that both the teachers and students have positive attitudes toward the politeness maxims and the implementation thereof during classroom interactions; furthermore, there was agreement between the teachers’ and students’ responses to the questionnaires for most of the politeness maxims except in 3 cases, which were for the maxims of sympathy, obligation (S to O), and feeling reticence.
