Abstract:
The American creed stresses political equality and political involvement, but substantial political inequality still persists from one generation to the next. Despite the importance of political inequality, not enough is known about the mechanisms that reproduce it. Political socialization research has focused on the transmission of political attitudes and culture across generations, but it has paid scant attention to how family transfers of economic resources, human capital, and social capital reproduce and perpetuate unequal patterns of political involvement and political authority. There is a long history in criminology of examining the effects of social bonds on criminal behavior. A similar conceptual framework that developed in sociology is social capital theory. Studies using these models have addressed the effects of parent–child relationships on adolescent behavior. However, social bond theory tends to predominate as an explanation of juvenile delinquency. We developed a comparative analysis of measures of family social bonds and family social capital using nationally representative data on youth ( N = 6,432). Measurement models suggested that family social capital

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the mutual impact which social relations and entrepreneurship had in relation to the success of four actors in a rural area in northern Sweden at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Many Swedish scholars have studied the process of social differentiation, before the industrial revolution. However, we still know very little about the forces behind this process, why some peasant households became more successful than others, especially during the first half of the nineteenth century when the economic differences were increasing. This historical analysis, which consists of two parts, tests central tenets of resource dependence theory. The first part entails an analysis of the transition in public policy governing corporations between 1991 and 2005. The second part tests hypotheses derived from resource dependence theory relating to a firm’s decision to acquire. The analysis explores the factors that explain why firms engage in mergers and acquisitions by examining three specific policy periods (i.e., 1991-1996

Abstract:
AbstractIn Kyrgyzstan, scholars disagree about the outcomes of the Tulip Revolution of 2005: while some argue that the revolution has not resulted in noteworthy changes in the country, others see it as the beginning of major political change. To trace the materiality of such change it is necessary to look at the micro-level of a society, as this chapter does by focusing on the house as the unit of analysis for a close study of change. It examines the gradual transformation of dwellings in Ak Jar, an illegal squatter settlement on the northern edge of Kyrgyztan’s capital city Bishkek. The immediate aftermath of the Tulip Revolution saw the emergence of numerous illegal squatter settlements on the outer fringes of the city. Ak Jar, the largest of these, has some 15,000 inhabitants who arrived in Bishkek as internal migrants in search of employment. The dwellings in Ak Jar have changed over the course of time: most began as small mud shacks, and changed when a family generated enough money to improve and expand them. The development of these houses was central for the gradual official recognition of the illegal settlements that emerged in post-revolutionary Kyrgyzstan. House biographies are therefore intrinsically tied to wider developments in Kyrgyz society and throw new light on the ruptures, power struggles, and consolidation of power relations after the Tulip Revolution.

This chapter explores the relationships between what are complex and shifting socio-economic and political conditions and the role and connection of norms and networks of social cooperation, such as friendship networks and kinship connections within Latvia. These “connections” and “kinships” have long served as a source of “social capital” it is argued, which is beyond the immediate circle of family. Research does suggest these relationships often perform functions usually associated with formal civil society, particularly in times of need. Specifically, this chapter considers the nature and practice of blat which something, it is argued, so naturally it was not even thought about. During Soviet times, it developed into a quiet resistance against the official system making life bearable for citizens, and therefore acting to support the continued existence of the Soviet system. The chapter also considers the links between social network theory, new-institutionalism, and social capital.

While the one-party state in Laos is nearly fifty years old, how is it possible for people to still revere the former Lao royal family? What does this mean for understandings of political legitimacy, heritage, and national identity in contemporary Laos? This chapter covers critical points of Herzfeld’s cultural intimacy model and shows that the Lao political system as it is today has become part of the fabric of Lao culture and society. The context of Luang Prabang, the former royal capital, is also introduced, as well as the justification for choosing Luang Prabang as an excellent place to consider how narratives of the past, present, and imagined futures intersect.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the question of the nature of the alienation of the bourgeoisie under capitalism. In particular, it considers the distinction made by Karl Marx in The Holy Family between the alienation endured by the worker and the alienation endured by the capitalist in bourgeois society. According to Marx: “The possessing classes and the class of the proletariat present pictures of the same human self-estrangement. But the former class feels at home in and confirmed by this self-estrangement.” The chapter analyzes the meaning of this passage by focusing on a characterization of the human essence in The German Ideology and on the doctrine of alienation articulated in the Paris Manuscripts. It also discusses the worker's alienation in his relation to the machine, and the capitalist's alienation in his relation to money, as well as the latter's relation to his capital. Finally, it restates the contrast between bourgeois and proletarian.

This chapter discusses how the misrepresentation and misinterpretation of neuroscience conceal the deeply political and moral nature of decisions about what is best for children. The current early intervention logic is rooted in simplistic notions of cause and effect, with the ends of improved human capital justifying the interventions to ensure its production. The chapter then explores potential future directions, contrasting the ‘brave new world of prevention science’ and its instrumental economic logic, with a socially just approach to increasing family income and reducing material deprivation, and more collectivist ideals of supporting families, reducing social harm, and humanely addressing the social good for its own sake.

Thinking about issues collectively changes the meaning of key values, such as liberty, equality and solidarity. Collective action is often seen as a value in itself; ideas of cooperation, social capital, solidarity and social cohesion are morally approved. The processes that lead people to act together, such as identity, reciprocity, loyalty and solidarity, are all valued in their own right. And various collective actions, such as participation in cultural life, family values and defence, are seen as desirable. These are not necessarily the values of the political left.
