Abstract: this article presents research results comparing Federal Public Institution of Higher Education. The place of Early Childhood Education and the role of the internship in the Pedagogy course. Based on the socio-historical-dialectic perspective, we analyzed the Political-Pedagogical Project of the Course and the Supervised Internship Project in Early Childhood Education and Early Years of Primary Education, considering the possibilities of the internship in the constitution of dialogues between the formative ideology and the realization of the educational praxis in its specificities. The results show that Pedagogy courses still subordinate the pedagogical proposals and practices of Early Childhood Education to Primary School models.

A Educação Infantil no curso de Pedagogia: lições do estágio

Abstract:
How can sociology instructors provide high-quality education in the sociology of sexualities that captures both the increasing need for digital pedagogical tools and sociology’s continued drive for theoretically rich course content? We present digital storytelling as a highly adaptable instructional tool that is appropriate for a range of undergraduate sociology courses. We outline one specific application of digital storytelling—a staged, semester-long assignment in which students create multimedia presentations to tell stories about how they were socialized into some gendered or sexual role. We also discuss three key learning outcomes from the digital storytelling project: (1) developing students’ sociological imagination and intersectional thinking by connecting their own lived experience to social theory, (2) developing transferable technological skills, and (3) learning to apply sociological concepts outside of the classroom. We close our discussion with potential assignment modifications to improve accessibility.

ABSTRACT In spring 2014, an interdisciplinary media project titled “Troubled Waters: Tracing Waste in the Delaware River” was organized at Haverford College. This project brought together more than 50 students from four courses comprising introductory political science, chemistry, and documentary film students, as well as a community media artist and community partners. The aim was to explore the causes, impacts, and meanings of different types of waste that are polluting the Delaware River. Chemistry students collected samples to determine the presence of chemicals from various waste products, political science students traced the waste to globalized production processes, and documentary students explored diverse ways of representing the theme of waste on screen. This article describes the project and how it might serve as a pedagogical model for multicourse interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement.

Upholding the quality of education in the absence of face-to-face contact requires an environmental approach and the creation of the unified online space and eLearning platform. The article makes the case for the relevance of creating automated tools for assessing the existing competencies of a listener necessary to form an individual learning route. The authors have developed methods for providing an automated pedagogical monitoring, described the principles of work of the automated diagnostic systems, and also gave the examples of its implementation. The suggested method combining key words and Template matching enables to optimize the eLearning platform. The article considers the possibilities of the system of automated pedagogical monitoring application when using the case technologies and students’ project work remotely in an electronic environment. In particular, the implementation of an expert assessment method using image theory and machine learning is presented. The article argues that electronic didactics makes it possible to expand the functionalities of pedagogical monitoring in conditions of digitalization, while maintaining the principles of traditional pedagogy. Taking into account the fact that there is a huge variety of different foreign and domestic aggregators of online courses it is necessary to develop a technology providing a selection of on-demand courses to reduce the time expenditure.

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to reflect on Psychology in the field of pedagogical training and whether it has been offered as a tool for an emancipatory education. This is based on the analysis of the Pedagogical Political Projects (PPP) and the Psychology courses of the Pedagogy course offered at the state universities of the North of Paraná. From this, we sought to analyze if the psychology employed is involved in the formation of pedagogues with ethical, social and reflexive commitment. It was observed a variability in the disciplines and theoretical lines of Psychology taught in Pedagogy, as well as in conjunction with the objectives and egress profile contained in the PPP. This allowed for a greater breadth of the professional view of the pedagogue in the courses analyzed. It was concluded that Psychology can favor reflective thinking in the training of Pedagogy professionals, with themes that approach education as a complex and multi-determined process.

Abstract:
Concerned that students were not developing sufficient competence in policy practice in a BSW social policy course, the author required them to undertake policy practice projects in partnership with human service organizations. Using the political engagement module, part of the Cedar Crest College Democratic Academy project, students in the course partnered with a community organization or political entity to work on a policy project at one of three levels: organizational, community, or legislative. This pedagogical strategy was piloted, revised, and evaluated by the author over three academic years, with nineteen students and seventeen projects in fourteen organizations. Outcomes were evaluated through student focus groups and postproject printed surveys of students and organization partners. The author discusses how the organizations were selected, the types of projects undertaken, the results of the projects, and the outcomes of the three-year study. Advantages of this pedagogy are presented, along with recommendations for teaching and research.

Abstract:
Special Education is the right of all students with some type of disability; global disorder or high skills / giftedness, a modality present in all stages of Brazilian schooling, from day care to universities, regardless of where the school is located. Therefore, Special Education must take place both in urban schools and in rural schools. As for the specialized educational assistance of deaf students, he must be bilingual, in Brazilian Sign Language and Portuguese Language. Thus, in this study we aim to reflect on the interface between special education and rural education with an emphasis on the inclusion of Libras as a mandatory curricular component in teacher training courses for rural teachers. In order to achieve this objective, we use a bibliographic review; documentary analysis of part of the legislation governing Special Education and a case study of a qualitative and quantitative nature of a Special Degree Course in Pedagogy of the Earth through the documentary analysis of its Political Pedagogical Project and a questionnaire applied to a sample of its students. graduates. We conclude that the inclusion of the Libras discipline in undergraduate courses represents a gain for the deaf community and the possibility of training teachers aware of its importance for the bilingual schooling of deaf students and the educational rights of these students. However, it has not proved to be sufficient to make future teachers proficient in Libras, in this sense we suggest as possibilities the increase in the course load of courses, their deepening in teaching and extension projects and we point to the need for more research in the area.

Abstract:
Given the integrality of the health-disease-care process, and the importance of health promotion in this context, the training of future health professionals must include the development of abilities that allow a full therapeutic plan centered on the patient. In order to achieve this goal, there are some initiatives being employed in several countries that aim to offer a better formation for their health care professionals, capacitating them in offering a more integral care, based on collaborative practices. Objective: To verify the teaching of skills and abilities listed in CompHP in some of the health care courses in USP, and to compare the use of Interprofessional Education as a polishing tool in these students’ training with the HPAC Guide. Method: Preliminary exploratory qualitative study based on the documental analysis of the pedagogical-political-project (PPP) and the description of disciplines in eight courses in USP-SP, comparing them with guidelines from CompHP and HPAC.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe importance of replication has been a major matter of discussion among political scientists for decades. However, in the past five years, the issue has gained greater traction, with many major journals adopting official standards for Data Access and Research Transparency (DA-RT). At the same time, scholars suggest the pivotal role that replication might play in methods training for students. Unfortunately, these conversations have been limited in that they emphasize quantitative methods and training of graduate students. This article seeks to fill this gap by offering commentary on the author’s experience in introducing a qualitative replication project in an upper-division undergraduate course. The students in the course replicated Ross’s (2004) influential article on the “resource curse,” but the assignment framework can be adopted for various topics and contexts.

The present research aims to know the self-evaluation procedure performed by the UniCEUB (University Center of Brasília) to better qualify the processes and thus encourage their development. I used to complement the data of institutional documents pertinent to the subject studied and I heard the representative of the Pedagogical Sector. These two directions suggest conceptual, attitudinal, and operational concepts that need to be perfected; They were located as educational and evaluative conceptions; In the second, the values defended and practiced and the operational indicators, such as actions and procedures adopted. The results obtained in our work showed some possibilities of advances on the institutional evaluation process, were not suggested by the coordinators and the studies carried out, but by my perception as a manager. At the same time, the follow-up of an institution, such as the UniCEUB, which since 1968 has maintained the same entrepreneurial ideal, constantly developing its pedagogical project, qualifying learning processes, constant concern for the qualification of employees, It helped me to see one who, because we live an Institution, we do not always perceive. No. of bitstreams: 1 dimensao_pedagogica.pdf: 995750 bytes, checksum: 2c2b7522ab69c0cec6dc0a5cf23c4ea6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012
Several countries have conducted reforms in undergraduate teaching aiming to integrate its functions to the needs of society, having as background the production of knowledge to prepare the human capital to meet the inclusion in the circuit of globalization. This is the case of courses in the area of health, and under the perspective of this doctoral study-- the Nutrition course. Without minimizing the importance of technical skills in the training of students, these demands require new curricular settings and different educational practices. Understanding the nutritionist´s professional exercise, as an eminently pedagogical action, refers to rethinking academic practices experienced in his/her training and the role of trainers in this context. Although one can consider this phenomenon as a global process, experiments in this study were taken from Nutrition Training Courses in Portugal, Argentina and Brazil. At first we selected the course of Nutrition of the School of Science of Nutrition and Food- (FCNAUP) at the University of Porto; in Argentina, the Escuela de Nutrición da Facultad de Medicina at the University of Buenos Aires, and in Brasil, the Course of Nutrition of the Federal University of São Paulo- Baixada Santista campus. The Brazilian experience was chosen for characterizing itself as a unique experience in its curricular and methodological approach. The other choices are the result of sandwich doctoral studies in the respective countries. The research took a qualitative approach, with inspiration from ethnographic principles. Seventeen interviews were conducted with the faculty, undergraduates and graduates, trying to understand whether and how the pedagogical dimension is present in the nutritionist training and whether it influences the knowledge of this professional. Legal documents that involve the formation of the three courses were also examined. In the course of the research it was possible to observe that the Pedagogical Political Projects, while manifestation of the organization of the courses sought to be the starting point for curriculum development and innovation, toward the integration of knowledge and practices that value the collective learning. The pedagogical dimension of the professional nutritionist appears differently in the legislation and in the proposed curriculum of the three courses, in the respective countries. While this aspect is emphasized in the Brazilian Curricular Guidelines, in other countries it seems to be a value for the academic communities, but expressed with more cloudiness in educational legislation. Probably this condition is favored by the adequacy of education to health policies, after the creation of the Unified Health System (SUS) in Brazil. The creation of participatory Pedagogical Project focuses on the knowledge of the faculty and their commitment to its principles, as it was revealed in the three realities studied. The relation between theory and practice appears to be essential for the formation in the sense of promoting the vision of reality that underlies the knowledge and commitment of the students. In this sense it seems fundamental the establishment of relationships between the university and health services that must act together for the training of future professionals. The educational process developed in a collective way in which all actors involved such as the faculty, undergraduates and community learn jointly, favors the development of autonomy, providing conditions to transform the individual into a subject of greater solidarity. The research, which aimed to investigate the contemporary settings of the professional nutritionist training, sought to contribute to the quality of training and expand the scenarios and possibilities for an educational practice consistent with the demands of a fairer society and greater welfare. It bet on the value of the pedagogical dimension of the action of those who work in the field of health that also includes the design of knowledge-sharing and solidarity, creating conditions for the awareness that the main activity of the professional nutritionist is to promote the humanization of individuals

Orientador: Anna Augusta Sampaio de Oliveira
Banca: Sadao Omote
Abstract: This work reports a case study comprising documental investigation. For this, we reported a brief history of both the Pedagogy course and the Special Education in Brazil, highlighting the teacher's training and the professional profile to be trained. We present a theoretical approach on the importance of the surveyed documents, and analyzed the subjects provided by the Special Education Qualification (in the period from1999 to 2006). The results pointed out a possible failure regarding the quality of the specialized teacher's training when replacing the exclusive Special Education Qualification of the Pedagogy course by the Lato Sensu specialization courses which were offered in a reductionist way to any licentiated kind. The picture of the literacy teacher with specialized knowledge in the initial grades of the elementary education is being lost to introduce the teacher from other areas to perform besides the students with some impairment in different modalities of specialized educational care .
This work reports a case study comprising documental investigation. Several studies also indicate that, the neoliberal educational policies have used these instruments as strategic control mechanisms. Moreover it is necessary to identify how and to what extent evaluative governmental policies have changed the political-pedagogic projects of degree courses. These questions guided the development of this research in order to examine whether the standards and evaluation mechanisms established by the Brazilian educational policies have caused changes in the political-pedagogical project of UniEVANGÉLICA s Pedagogy course. Thus, this research, of a qualitative nature, based on the dialectical method, aims to identify, discuss and analyze the relationship between the evaluation of Higher Education and the political-pedagogic project of the course and contribute to the discussion on the autonomy of Higher Education Institutions and quality of degree courses. It was verified, by the research, that the institutional evaluation has been the main instrument for outbreak changes in the political-pedagogical project of the Pedagogy course, having the regulation as their driving force. Among the regulatory mechanisms used to evaluate the course, the most influence, directly and indirectly, are the external evaluation, the Enade and the National Curriculum Guidelines. It was also identified that, despite the centralizer and regulatory tendencies, the educational actors have been heard and have achieved some progress in the development of emancipatory education. The pressure of the market in the course and daily life of informants is very oppressive. The main influence was the contraction of the course duration from four to three years, which produces deficiencies and affects the course quality. It was shown, therefore, the strong influence of the processes and evaluation mechanisms of governmental policies in the PPP of this course, as well as the tense relationship between regulation and emancipation. The alternative proposed here for the balance between regulation and emancipation is the possibility of regulation, by means of the evaluation be, in fact, built by all, in a dialogical and democratic process, with the possibility to accomplish the communicative action theorized by Habermas (1975 , 1987, 1993, 1997) and the theory of the emerging paradigm of Santos (1997, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005) assumed in this work because it values the effective participation of educational actors for new ways of building a political-pedagogic project, structuring the curriculum and new methodologies, once it preconizes new ways to acquire, produce and distribute the knowledge that takes into consideration the different ways of knowing and the different cultures.

Abstract:
After approval of the National Curriculum Guidelines for Physiotherapy courses (DCN/FISIO), there was a significant increase of the number of graduation courses in physiotherapy, particularly in private institutions. The Northern Region had the highest growth rate of these courses in Brazil, between 1999 and 2004. Until 2002, the year of the DCN/FISIO approval, there were only six courses in this region. Currently, there are 27 courses of physiotherapy, four of them (15%) are held by public institutions and 23 (85%) by private institutions. Linked to this increase in the number of courses, the graduation profile defined in the DCN/FISIO changed the paradigm of the professional formation of a physiotherapist, originally based on the formation of a specialist in physiotherapeutic techniques for treatment and/or rehabilitation. Since the DCN/FISIO, the formation of a person with technical and scientific competence, a generalist and humanist, with critical and reflective capacity, ready to act in the health-illness process following ethical principles is sought. According to the DCN/FISIO, the courses that started in 2002 had two years after their approval to apply the new guidelines. This context of change and expansion of the offer of physiotherapeutic education justifies the present research, which takes as its object of study the Pedagogical Projects of Course (PPC) of the physiotherapy courses, its general purpose being to analyze the adherence of the physiotherapy courses from the Northern Region to the DCN/FISIO. To this purpose, we performed a critical analysis of the PPC, based on the methodology used by the Anísio Teixeira National Institute of Studies and Educational Research (INEP) in 2006, in this study of the adherence to the Curriculum Guidelines of other courses in the health area, such as Nursing, Medicine and Dentistry. We also visited the institutions that had the highest and lowest adherence to the DCN/FISIO and interviewed the coordinators of the Physiotherapy courses, with the aim of discovering the implantation of the elements highlighted as important and the strategies that are being used by these courses to overcome the fragilities. Among the findings in this study we can point out, as the best points of the courses in the Northern Region, aspects such as: the collective construction of the Pedagogical Projects, the interdisciplinary construction of the curricular matrix and/or the use of methodologies that propitiate this practice as well as the integration between theory and practice, the presence of mechanisms to control end of course monographs, the more breadth professional actuation areas during period training, the incentive for scientific production and the balance between the teaching schedule of essential contents and the presence of complementary activities regulation. On the other hand, we point out as fragilities: the indication that the Pedagogical Project was constructed in restricted groups, the literal transcription of elements of the DCN/FISIO in the Pedagogical Project, the use of teaching methodologies that do not match the educational perspective of the DCN/FISIO, the lack of interdisciplinarity, as well as integration between theory and practice, and elements that show the organization and monitoring of end of course monographs, the emphasis on technical learning rather than human learning and the little breadth professional actuation areas during period training, beyond the identified inconsistencies between the text of the Pedagogical Project and the reality of the visited courses.

Abstract:
This dissertation looks into the implementation of the Political-Pedagogical Project (PPP) of the Municipal Education Department (SMED) of Viamão, RS, Brazil, in two municipal schools as a democratic management challenge. It is a public policy initiated in 2013-2016 in order to guide educational actions in the municipal school system, with a view to improving the quality of teaching and learning in the 62 local Childhood and Elementary Education schools. The research was based on theoretical assumptions of democratic management designed especially by Batista (2013) and Werle (2003). The authors point to a view of democratic management that goes beyond consented participation, school, and local community, thus inferring that such social construction needs to be developed in public schools’ planning, decision, action and autonomy processes. In methodological terms, it is a qualitative study. In addition to bibliographical review, analysis of documents and interviews was carried out with SMED and school actors. The Brazilian legal educational framework establishes that the Union is responsible for coordinating the national education policy. Article 11 of Brazil’s Law of Guidelines and Bases of National Education (LDBEN) establishes that municipalities shall organize, maintain and develop the official bodies and institutions of their educational systems, integrating them into the educational policies and plans of the Union and states As a result of their attributions to local education, municipalities may choose to establish and manage their school systems. The study presented school actors’ strategies for participation in the process of implementing a municipal policy formulated by SMED and approved by the Municipal Education Council (CME). Considering the notion of interpretation and re-creation that the policy is subject to, the process was understood in the context of practice (BOWE et al., 1992). Based on such methodological framework, it was possible to observe, in both schools and at SMED itself, the processes of interpretation and re-creation carried out by the distinct school actors who operate in the context of practice in order to relate the policy text to practice. The results obtained regarding the process of implementation of SMED’s PPP and the redesign of PPPs in schools allow us to conclude that participation was higher for management staff and the teachers’ segments, but still very low for students, parents and local community segments. This shows that the spaces of re-creation and reinterpretation of the policy at school are still reserved for the school actors who occupy privileged places in the school hierarchy.

The question that guides the research is: how is teacher training handled in academic master's programs in Brazil and what are the reflections on teaching knowledge at a border university? Based on the concepts of teacher training and the model of teaching knowledge proposed by Tardif (1991), he analyzes the academic master's programs in administration and offers teacher training courses in his curriculum. Conducts semi-structured interview with 03 management professors from the Unioeste campus in Foz do Iguaçu. It shows that teacher training is built by classroom practice, but that the teaching internship is important in this process. In curricular knowledge there is no look at local frontier issues. It concludes that the formation of the teacher in Administration does not happen in the Master's programs, since the professional and curricular knowledge are not enough for the construction of the pedagogical practice. Even in curricular analysis, there is no concern with frontier knowledge (local knowledge) because this is not valued, neither in the interviews, nor in the political pedagogical projects of the Administration courses, nor in the programs analyzed. The results point to a model of teacher education that considers plural knowledge and that rethinks the importance of teacher education in academic master's programs in administration in Brazil.

Eugenios Voulgaris, whose Greek translation of Virgil’s epic is the subject of this chapter, is another example of how translation was used for cultural ideology. Voulgaris, who was invited by Catherine the Great of Russia to serve as archbishop of Cherson and Slaviansk, translated the Aeneid into Homeric Greek. This odd translation also had a pronounced pedagogical mission for an intended audience that was not Russian, but rather belonged to the Greek diaspora. Furthermore, as Papaioannou shows, Voulgaris’s strange undertaking was closely intertwined with Catherine’s political and cultural aspirations: her ‘Greek Project’, which aimed at projecting Russia both as a Western military power in the likeness of Rome and as the heir to Greek Orthodox Byzantium.

Abstract:
This study aims to present the plurality of the teacher’s perception, which emerges from the actions taken to minimize the difficulties that come up in remote education. Its relevance is found in the actions and reactions of those involved, and make up possibilities for generating public policies that motivate and foster quality education. The following research question guided this work: What lessons could be learned by those involved in their teaching practice after schools reopen? An exploratory research was carried out, by choosing the methodological approach of qualitative research. Data collection was performed using an online questionnaire, directed to teachers who worked in the classroom and started working in remote education. Sharing knowledge is complex and demands a variety of actions, interventions, processes that, however sophisticated the technology used, it certainly does not allow to develop all the strategies that the teacher uses in the classroom. Technologies help with physical distance. But we believe the exchange that happens naturally between teacher and student, and between student and student, exists only when everyone is in the same physical environment, under the same physical and human conditions, especially in basic education. The lessons learned: (i) improve our training or post-training with the introduction of disciplines related to digital and technological means; (ii) understand that remote education is a possibility to be applied in our teaching practice; (iii) include viable teaching, learning and assessment alternatives in the Political Pedagogical Project; (iv) at parent-teacher conferences or class meetings, seek to collect all possible observations, both positive and negative. We need to considerate new routes, minimize the questions that arise during practice, in order to adapt to the new technological strategies of the art of teaching.

Guidelines for open and online learning assessment and recognition with reference to the National and European qualification framework: micro-credentials as a proposal for tuning and transparency. Vytauto Didžiojo universitetas, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.7220/9786094674792.

Abstract:
These Guidelines are one of the results of the four-year research project “Open Online Learning for Digital and Networked Society” (2017-2021). The project objective was to enable university teachers to design open and online learning through open and online learning curriculum and environment applying learning analytics as a metacognitive tool and creating open and online learning assessment and recognition practices, responding to the needs of digital and networked society. The research of the project resulted in 10 scientific publications and 2 studies prepared by Vytautas Magnus university Institute of Innovative Studies research team in collaboration with their international research partners from Germany, Spain and Portugal. The final stage of the research attempted creating open and online learning assessment and recognition practices, responding to the learner needs in contemporary digital and networked society. The need for open learning recognition has been increasing during the recent decade while the developments of open learning related to the Covid 19 pandemics have dramatically increased the need for systematic and high-quality assessment and recognition of learning acquired online. The given time also relates to the increased need to offer micro-credentials to learners, as well as a rising need for universities to prepare for micro-credentialization and issue new digital credentials to learners who are regular students, as well as adult learners joining for single courses. The increased need of all labour - market participants for frequent and fast renewal of competences requires a well working and easy to use system of open learning assessment and recognition. For learners, it is critical that the micro-credentials are well linked to national and European qualification frameworks, as well as European digital credential infrastructures (e.g., Europass and similar). For employers, it is important to receive requested quality information that is encrypted in the metadata of the credential. While for universities, there is the need to properly prepare institutional digital infrastructure, organizational procedures, descriptions of open learning opportunities and virtual learning environments to share, import and export the meta-data easily and seamlessly through European Digital Hub service infrastructures, as well as ensure that academic and administrative staff has digital competencies to design, issue and recognise open learning through digital and micro-credentials. The first chapter of the Guidelines provides a background view of the European Qualification Framework and National Qualification frameworks for the further system of gaining, stacking and modelling further qualifications through open online learning. The second chapter suggests the review of current European policy papers and consultations on the establishment of micro-credentials in European higher education. The findings of the report of micro-credentials higher education consultation group “European Approach to Micro-credentials” is shortly introduced, as well as important policy discussions taking place. Responding to the Rome Bologna Comunique 2020, where the ministers responsible for higher education agreed to support lifelong learning through issuing micro-credentials, a joint endeavour of DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion and DG Research and Innovation resulted in one of the most important political documents highlighting the potential of micro-credentials towards economic, social and education innovations. The consultation group of experts from the Member States defined the approach to micro-credentials to facilitate their validation, recognition and portability, as well as to foster a larger uptake to support individual learning in any subject area and at any stage of life or career. The Consultation Group also suggested further urgent topics to be discussed, including the storage, data exchange, portability, and data standards of micro-credentials and proposed EU Standard of constitutive elements of micro-credentials. The third chapter is devoted to the institutional readiness to issue and to recognize digital and micro-credentials. Universities need strategic decisions and procedures ready to be enacted for assessment of open learning and issuing micro-credentials. The administrative and academic staff needs to be aware and confident to follow these procedures while keeping the quality assurance procedures in place, as well. The process needs to include increasing teacher awareness in the processes of open learning assessment and the role of micro-credentials for the competitiveness of lifelong learners in general. When the strategic documents and procedures to assess open learning are in place and the staff is ready and well aware of the processes, the description of the courses and the virtual learning environment needs to be prepared to provide the necessary metadata for the assessment of open learning and issuing of micro-credentials. Different innovation-driven projects offer solutions: OEPass developed a pilot Learning Passport, based on European Diploma Supplement, MicroHE developed a portal Credentify for displaying, verifying and sharing micro-credential data. Credentify platform is using Blockchain technology and is developed to comply with European Qualifications Framework. Institutions, willing to join Credentify platform, should make strategic discussions to apply micro-credential metadata standards. The ECCOE project building on outcomes of OEPass and MicroHE offers an all-encompassing set of quality descriptors for credentials and the descriptions of learning opportunities in higher education. The third chapter also describes the requirements for university structures to interact with the Europass digital credentials infrastructure. In 2020, European Commission launched a new Europass platform with Digital Credential Infrastructure in place. Higher education institutions issuing micro-credentials linked to Europass digital credentials infrastructure may offer added value for the learners and can increase reliability and fraud-resistant information for the employers. However, before using Europass Digital Credentials, universities should fulfil the necessary preconditions that include obtaining a qualified electronic seal, installing additional software and preparing the necessary data templates. Moreover, the virtual learning environment needs to be prepared to export learning outcomes to a digital credential, maintaining and securing learner authentication. Open learning opportunity descriptions also need to be adjusted to transfer and match information for the credential meta-data. The Fourth chapter illustrates how digital badges as a type of micro-credentials in open online learning assessment may be used in higher education to create added value for the learners and employers. An adequately provided metadata allows using digital badges as a valuable tool for recognition in all learning settings, including formal, non-formal and informal.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a research developed in collaboration by two higher education institutions. Nowadays, high education programs can only be successful with the use of new technologies in the teaching/learning process, especially when there are special education requirements. Two experiments were carried out: (1) a set of billiard balls, for snooker game, simulated by using physics laws and, (2) aLJo 2009, a game whose aim is to achieve the correct sorting of a sequence to accomplish a common task. Both projects were developed by students from University of Minho (UM), with different background and from different engineering courses. The snooker game, an academic project, aims to demonstrate that, through a simple game, several areas of knowledge can be used. On the other hand, aLJo 2009 was developed considering a collaboration protocol between UM and the Parents and Friends Association of the Citizen with Mental Deficiency (APPCDM), to improve behavior and social skills in patients with mental impairments.

Abstract:
Guided by the principles of digital game design, the author proposes a reformulation of the pedagogical objectives and focuses of the pedagogical graduate courses, especially in relation to internship and training stages, in a problem-solving model based on digital games intending to shift the formation of future teachers from an abstract model to a real-life-based problem, thus proposing guidelines for an interdisciplinary project. The chapter summaries this proposal enlisting the necessary structural changes needed to achieve this goal to guide those wishing to adjust their pedagogical projects in a way to insert the digital games as educational devices in their courses without having to remodel the entire existing course. An introduction to the problem is made, its theorical background presented, followed by a contextualization of the Brazilian educational area with the proposition delineated and a conclusion.

Abstract:
Many young people in South America experience repeated conditions of economic, social, and cultural exclusion, with low rates of secondary school completion and high unemployment exposing them to social violence. Yet, they are also the driving force for change in the region; their creativity is a transformative power. This chapter proposes a pedagogical reflection on the learning process and on social and educational participation. Each young person’s individual experiences and the knowledge they acquire in institutions and diverse social contexts are a platform to develop cultural promotion opportunities that produce the conditions to build a future project. Social educators practice one of the social tie professions that help generate bonds with culture, institutions, and other people, whereas educational action relates each young person to common cultural heritage. Social pedagogy faces the challenge and responsibility of creating strategies and cultural transmission methods for all youth, becoming a political action that fosters equality.

Abstract:
The growing number of online courses offered by many universities worldwide is reshaping the traditional delivery of knowledge. This study tries to combine e-learning and the learning principles of language and linguistics. Drawing on the experience of the start@unito project at the University of (blinded), which this year also offers language and linguistics courses, we tackle one of the main problems of online education, namely that of interaction. This study tries to combine e-learning and the learning principles of language and linguistics, focusing on the three types of interaction proposed by Moore (1989): learner-learner, learner-instructor, learner-content interactions. Specifically, we concentrate on the various ways in which learners may interact with the content in asynchronous untutored online university courses. Starting from the assumption that all the language and linguistics courses need a great deal of interaction, in order to be beneficial to students, it emerges that the application of pedagogical approaches and a careful instructional design of the courses may facilitate a more effective interaction with the content of the object of study.

Abstract:
A new pedagogical approach called engineering education through degree-long project has been implemented in the mechanical engineering program at the University of Cincinnati as a part of the NSF CCLI project. The approach integrates selected courses across the undergraduate curriculum of the mechanical engineering program using a degree-long project (DLP) as the theme. Design of Formula SAE® race car was employed as the first DLP. In each course in the sequence, the concept of the DLP approach and the role of the assignment in the course in the overall DLP are explained to students. In early-year courses, assignments are simple problems designed to show how abstract concepts are eventually applied to engineering tasks. In later-year courses, more involved design projects are used aiming at nurturing the ability to solve open-ended engineering problems. In conducting the approach, the most difficult part was developing an interesting and challenging problem which is relevant to practical applications, especially in early year courses. Findings through student evaluations and a stake-holders workshop on the improvement of the approach are discussed.

Abstract:
Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) have become a grounded reality and a stable concept in the distance education panorama with worldwide universities continuously creating and offering every year broad selections of online courses. Nevertheless, despite the many developments in terms of individual and distance learning approaches, it is indetermined if MOOCs can deliver effective pedagogical methods and tools suitable for the implementation of online courses in the categories of art and humanities as well as in creating environments that give equal space to the two complementary layers of distance learning and distant teaching. Consequently, also the development of a valid, and captivating e-learning experience able to effectively reach out to students of different backgrounds, creating an impactful learning community represents a challenge. This issue acquires certain relevance particularly in relation to the much-debated question around the most effective pedagogical methodology to deliver humanities-oriented knowledge in a distant learning context. This paper provides an overview of the educational and pedagogical formulas adopted for the creation of a MOOC on European Crime Fiction, currently being developed in the framework of DETECt – Detecting Transcultural Identity in European Popular Crime Narratives (https://www.detect-project.eu/) a project funded by European’s Union Horizon 2020. The MOOC concept presented in the framework of this research concentrates on the development of mixed e-learning and e-teaching strategies, that leverages the application of pedagogical elements like social network and independent learning and combines them with users’ engagement methods. On the one hand, this research aims to challenge the debate related to the effectiveness of teaching and learning a humanities-oriented subject in a distance learning environment. On the other hand, intends to recreate a vibrant learning community capable of broadening the academic research carried out by the project enabling the collaboration between the MOOC public and the researchers and teachers.

Abstract:
School children in general and high school students, in particular more often than not lose interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education. Underrepresented and female students are even more discouraged by STEM courses. Our investigation and interviews with high school teachers cite that the main reason for such disinterest is the disconnect between school and reality. Students cannot relate the abstract concepts they learn in physics, biology, chemistry, or math to their surroundings. This paper discusses a new capstone project-based approach that closes this gap. This work is an outcome of an NSF funded project called CAPSULE (Capstone Unique Learning Experience). We use the top-down pedagogical approach instead of the traditional bottom-up approach. The top-down approach relates the abstract concepts to exciting open-ended capstone projects where students are engaged in designing solutions, like products to solve open-ended problems. This top-down approach is modeled after the college-level capstone design courses. The paper presents the model, its details, and implementation. It also presents the formative and summative evaluation of the model after deploying it in the Boston Public Schools, a system heavily populated by the targeted student groups.

Abstract:
It has been well documented in the engineering education literature that introductory linear control systems courses present unique pedagogical challenges. Similarly, it has been reported that engaging undergraduate students in control systems research is challenging. The control of nonlinear systems is the focus of much research; Therefore, a paradox exists; research programs involving undergraduate students are often conducted in a “nonlinear before linear” fashion. Prior research by the authors approached this paradox by investigating whether a meaningful research project in nonlinear control systems could be conducted. While the author and co-author were willing to execute this research (despite the intense time commitment), this type of project is not sustainable long-term unless the significant time invested results in Item 1) illumination of new pedagogical techniques that generalize to each student in the linear control systems course (not just participants in the research project). This manuscript will describe in detail Item 1). Given the student and faculty mentors experience in the nonlinear controls research project and the student’s experience in the linear control systems course, pedagogical insights gained through this endeavor will be detailed by the faculty member. These are meant to close the loop of instructor assessment of the course during preparation for future offerings. Therefore, the undergraduate student directly provides an accounting of the experiences throughout the research program and introductory control systems course. The result is a proposed pedagogical approach to be implemented by three distinct methodologies. Methodology (1) Traditional lecture format, Methodology (2) Targeted physical or hands-on experiences where students are exposed to a controlled system/process commonly seen in industry, and Methodology (3) Direct student participation in the design of certain aspects of course materials.

Abstract:
Project-based learning is a widely adopted strategy and a preferred pedagogical tool in the undergraduate engineering curriculum. However, design-and-build engineering projects are open-ended, ill-defined, and quite complex so that students often feel quite overwhelmed by the imposed need to solve relatively challenging and practical problems within limited time and resources. Although there are virtually no right or wrong feasible design engineering project solutions, over the years, students’ design project submissions identify a number of students with mediocre design competencies. This indicates that there is a need for developing a pedagogical strategy designed for assisting the students in better preparing for undertaking the challenges of term design engineering projects. Hence, a special series of deliberately designed small-scale “mini” design projects has been developed to serve as “just-in-time” means for building-up the students’ skills required to successfully undertake the tasks of the respective larger-scale term design projects. This paper focuses on exploring this strategy and the different ways of its implementation into the engineering curriculum through three representative core design courses at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, respectively.

Though face to face class interaction is still a dominant-teaching approach in most higher education institutes, online teaching has become increasingly popular with the development of internet technology [1,3]. The authors have used instructional technology and computer software to develop web-based lectures in a mechanical engineering program for online delivery at their institution. This paper highlights how computer software Camtasia Studio and Windows Journal have been integrated with a Gateway tablet PC, a webcam and wireless speaking receiver device to produce web-based lectures for online delivery. The paper intends to share experiences, myths, and lessons that the authors have learned during production of audio and video online course materials. Integration of instructional technology with computer software has made online course preparation and production much more effective and efficient. The paper also summarizes the steps taken by the authors to accomplish this instructional project from start to finish. It includes integration of instructional technology, pedagogical concepts, development of audio and video materials, difficulties faced and how they were handled, software used, and existing issues for the future work.

Abstract:
Abstract The Integrated Project of Industrial Engineering and Management 1 (IPIEM1) is a curricular unit of the first year developed in the first semester of the Integrated Masters degree of Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM11) – University of Minho, Portugal. In the 2019’s 1st semester and in the IPIEM1 previous versions, Project-Based Learning (PBL) was usually adopted as a learning methodology. In this pedagogical development context, freshman students develop a project integrating all five courses related to this current semester. To undertake this project, the students work in large teams that comprise nine to ten members. Throughout the semester, each team must accomplish the project phases and tasks. To communicate their progress and results developed during the semester, each team designed a blog. In the IPIEM1 previous editions of PBL of this year in this program, the weblog (blog) digital technology was also adopted, but it was never assessed. Thus, this paper has two main objectives: 1) to evaluate the importance of the blog for the teams; 2) to discuss teams’ engagement during its development, knowing that it would be a part of the assessment method. The survey results revealed that the teams considered the blog useful to keep an update record of the project progress and to stimulate the writing and reflection about project contents. Furthermore, some of teachers’ and students’ considerations showed the need for providing more training and experience in the development of blogs.

Abstract:
Course design in higher education is often approached in a very linear and text-based manner. The paper presents a visual tool in the form of a canvas aimed at accompanying teachers in the design of courses. The canvas can be used in an individual or co-teaching setting. It can be applied either during the conception phase of a new course or to revisit and reflect an existing course. The visual dimension departs from the usual text-based format and ambitions to offer a practical and intuitive approach. It aims at engaging teachers to adopt a prototyping approach in the design of courses. It builds on the various visual modeling tools offered in the fields of business and strategy. The proposed canvas is part of a broader project accompanying higher education teachers in the clarification of their pedagogical intent, in ensuring constructive alignment and in the adoption of a reflexive posture on their teaching experiences.

Abstract:
This descriptive case study provides a broad overview of JMU X-Labs, an academic maker space (in other words, a teaching lab with fabrication and digital production technologies) that hosts team-taught, project-driven multidisciplinary courses. The JMU X-Labs serves the students and faculty of James Madison University[MSR-m1] , a mid-sized, public, and undergraduate-focused university in the United States. The narrative proceeds from two different but overlapping points of view: how courses at JMU X-Labs are designed and taught; and how administration of JMU X-Labs supports them. The authors refer to specific courses, pedagogical methods, and problem-solving strategies to illustrate the narrative, and they argue throughout that pedagogy and administration are indelibly intertwined in how the organization operates. Gesturing to the broad applicability and transferability of the JMU X-Labs model, the authors mark some of areas of further research that would benefit a more robust understanding of how the organization operates and grows. Finally, the authors speculate how the dynamics of this young and growing organization may answer some core and difficult questions pertaining to innovation in higher education.[MSR-m1]James Madison University (JMU) Clearlyl referenced in abstract and opening paragraph below to explain institutional context as per reviewer request.

African Open Science Platform Part 1: Landscape Study. Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.17159/assaf.2019/0047.

Abstract:
This report maps the African landscape of Open Science – with a focus on Open Data as a sub-set of Open Science. Data to inform the landscape study were collected through a variety of methods, including surveys, desk research, engagement with a community of practice, networking with stakeholders, participation in conferences, case study presentations, and workshops hosted. Although the majority of African countries (35 of 54) demonstrates commitment to science through its investment in research and development (R&D), academies of science, ministries of science and technology, policies, recognition of research, and participation in the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI), the following countries demonstrate the highest commitment and political willingness to invest in science: Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. In addition to existing policies in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), the following countries have made progress towards Open Data policies: Botswana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, South Africa and Uganda. Only two African countries (Kenya and South Africa) at this stage contribute 0.8% of its GDP (Gross Domestic Product) to R&D (Research and Development), which is the closest to the AU’s (African Union’s) suggested 1%. Countries such as Lesotho and Madagascar ranked as 0%, while the R&D expenditure for 24 African countries is unknown. In addition to this, science globally has become fully dependent on stable ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) infrastructure, which includes connectivity/bandwidth, high performance computing facilities and data services. This is especially applicable since countries globally are finding themselves in the midst of the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR), which is not only “about” data, but which “is” data. According to an article1 by Alan Marcus (2015) (Senior Director, Head of Information Technology and Telecommunications Industries, World Economic Forum), “At its core, data represents a post-industrial opportunity. Its uses have unprecedented complexity, velocity and global reach. As digital communications become ubiquitous, data will rule in a world where nearly everyone and everything is connected in real time. That will require a highly reliable, secure and available infrastructure at its core, and innovation at the edge.” Every industry is affected as part of this revolution – also science. An important component of the digital transformation is “trust” – people must be able to trust that governments and all other industries (including the science sector), adequately handle and protect their data. This requires accountability on a global level, and digital industries must embrace the change and go for a higher standard of protection. “This will reassure consumers and citizens, benefitting the whole digital economy”, says Marcus. A stable and secure information and communication technologies (ICT) infrastructure – currently provided by the National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) – is key to advance collaboration in science. The AfricaConnect2 project (AfricaConnect (2012–2014) and AfricaConnect2 (2016–2018)) through establishing connectivity between National Research and Education Networks (NRENs), is planning to roll out AfricaConnect3 by the end of 2019. The concern however is that selected African governments (with the exception of a few countries such as South Africa, Mozambique, Ethiopia and others) have low awareness of the impact the Internet has today on all societal levels, how much ICT (and the 4th Industrial Revolution) have affected research, and the added value an NREN can bring to higher education and research in addressing the respective needs, which is far more complex than simply providing connectivity. Apart from more commitment and investment in R&D, African governments – to become and remain part of the 4th Industrial Revolution – have no option other than to acknowledge and commit to the role NRENs play in advancing science towards addressing the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals). For successful collaboration and direction, it is fundamental that policies within one country are aligned with one another. Alignment on continental level is crucial for the future Pan-African African Open Science Platform to be successful. Both the HIPSSA ((Harmonization of ICT Policies in Sub-Saharan Africa)3 project and WATRA (the West Africa Telecommunications Regulators Assembly)4, have made progress towards the regulation of the telecom sector, and in particular of bottlenecks which curb the development of competition among ISPs. A study under HIPSSA identified potential bottlenecks in access at an affordable price to the international capacity of submarine cables and suggested means and tools used by regulators to remedy them. Work on the recommended measures and making them operational continues in collaboration with WATRA. In addition to sufficient bandwidth and connectivity, high-performance computing facilities and services in support of data sharing are also required. The South African National Integrated Cyberinfrastructure System5 (NICIS) has made great progress in planning and setting up a cyberinfrastructure ecosystem in support of collaborative science and data sharing. The regional Southern African Development Community6 (SADC) Cyber-infrastructure Framework provides a valuable roadmap towards high-speed Internet, developing human capacity and skills in ICT technologies, high- performance computing and more. The following countries have been identified as having high-performance computing facilities, some as a result of the Square Kilometre Array7 (SKA) partnership: Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa, Tunisia, and Zambia. More and more NRENs – especially the Level 6 NRENs 8 (Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, and recently Zambia) – are exploring offering additional services; also in support of data sharing and transfer. The following NRENs already allow for running data-intensive applications and sharing of high-end computing assets, bio-modelling and computation on high-performance/ supercomputers: KENET (Kenya), TENET (South Africa), RENU (Uganda), ZAMREN (Zambia), EUN (Egypt) and ARN (Algeria). Fifteen higher education training institutions from eight African countries (Botswana, Benin, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan, and Tanzania) have been identified as offering formal courses on data science. In addition to formal degrees, a number of international short courses have been developed and free international online courses are also available as an option to build capacity and integrate as part of curricula. The small number of higher education or research intensive institutions offering data science is however insufficient, and there is a desperate need for more training in data science. The CODATA-RDA Schools of Research Data Science aim at addressing the continental need for foundational data skills across all disciplines, along with training conducted by The Carpentries 9 programme (specifically Data Carpentry 10 ). Thus far, CODATA-RDA schools in collaboration with AOSP, integrating content from Data Carpentry, were presented in Rwanda (in 2018), and during17-29 June 2019, in Ethiopia. Awareness regarding Open Science (including Open Data) is evident through the 12 Open Science-related Open Access/Open Data/Open Science declarations and agreements endorsed or signed by African governments; 200 Open Access journals from Africa registered on the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ); 174 Open Access institutional research repositories registered on openDOAR (Directory of Open Access Repositories); 33 Open Access/Open Science policies registered on ROARMAP (Registry of Open Access Repository Mandates and Policies); 24 data repositories registered with the Registry of Data Repositories (re3data.org) (although the pilot project identified 66 research data repositories); and one data repository assigned the CoreTrustSeal. Although this is a start, far more needs to be done to align African data curation and research practices with global standards. Funding to conduct research remains a challenge. African researchers mostly fund their own research, and there are little incentives for them to make their research and accompanying data sets openly accessible. Funding and peer recognition, along with an enabling research environment conducive for research, are regarded as major incentives. The landscape report concludes with a number of concerns towards sharing research data openly, as well as challenges in terms of Open Data policy, ICT infrastructure supportive of data sharing, capacity building, lack of skills, and the need for incentives. Although great progress has been made in terms of Open Science and Open Data practices, more awareness needs to be created and further advocacy efforts are required for buy-in from African governments. A federated African Open Science Platform (AOSP) will not only encourage more collaboration among researchers in addressing the SDGs, but it will also benefit the many stakeholders identified as part of the pilot phase. The time is now, for governments in Africa, to acknowledge the important role of science in general, but specifically Open Science and Open Data, through developing and aligning the relevant policies, investing in an ICT infrastructure conducive for data sharing through committing funding to making NRENs financially sustainable, incentivising open research practices by scientists, and creating opportunities for more scientists and stakeholders across all disciplines to be trained in data management.
