Abstract:
Nowadays researching socio-political broadcasting of the 21st century is topical. The recent decades have witnessed a significant increase in the number of journalistic radio programs, evolution of their format and genre diversity, and improvement of broadcasting forms and approaches. However, modern radio publicism as independent form of public-oriented journalism has not been studied sufficiently. The article deals with theoretical ambiguity of the concept of publicism (political and topical journalism), determines its general characteristics and patterns, namely, depth of author’s thought, a high level of personification, strong emotion, direct appeal to the society, publicist’s own ideals and values, solemnity, prepossession, worldview forming, and rapid development during transition and crisis periods. The authors analyze correlation between the notions “publicism” and “publicist style”, and determine that the latter, being the journalist’s manner of interpreting a public phenomenon and a way of his/her identification with a particular community, is one of the characteristics of publisism. Meanwhile, the study shows that some media content of publicist-like style only imitates publicism, being in fact pseudo-publicism, whose influence is destructive due to its anti-civil and anti-social orientation, provocative character and intolerant attitude. The authors propose their own scientific definition to the term “radio publicism”, point out essential and functional characteristics of Russian radio publicism, its development trends and prospects, and determine universal features of modern radio publicism. The article also describes its current genre-and-format structure. Documentary publicist and art publicist genre groups, having their own verbal, compositional, structural, and functional features and radio audience, are distinguished as ontological categories of radio publicism. The research methods used by the authors include structure functional analysis, typological analysis, method of observation, comparative analysis, classification, and a systemic approach.

The object of the research is the works of publicists of the 19th — 21st centuries about the Decembrists, starting from 1825 and ending today. It is noted that both scholars and publicists had to independently determine their attitude to the phenomenon of the Decembrists’ revolt depending on the political agenda. In terms of ideological orientation, the materials about the Decembrists are conditionally divided into three groups: loyalist, revolutionary, and liberal. It is concluded that these publicist concepts, according to which the Decembrists were either traitors, liberals, or radical revolutionaries, are still relevant.

Adolf Kliszewicz (born 1879) was one of the leading publicists of the Second Polish Republic connected with the Christian-conservative trend. He was a publicist for many conservative magazines, including Przegląd Powszechny, Nasza Przyszłość or Ateneum Kapłańskie. The article concerns views of Adolf Kliszewicz on the doctrine and political system of Bolshevism. It should be noted that Kliszewicz based his analysis of Russian communist thought on the background of political tendencies that began to dominate in Europe. For him, Italian fascism and German national socialism were the reference point for reflections on Bolshevism. Additionally, the Polish journalist saw in the Russian communist doctrine the great danger of national and state existence. Radical socialism, as he treated Bolshevism, was an expression of the perversion of man and his enslavement by materialistic ideology.

Abstract:
Since the early 20th century, public relations has been implicated in the production and sustainment of celebrity. Celebrities rely on the work of publicists to strategically cast, produce, and place discourses within spheres of popular culture. Through an extended interview with Alan Nierob, publicist of transgender celebrity Caitlyn Jenner, this article is an analysis of celebrity public relations as a site of cultural intermediation. Drawing on Bourdieu’s notions of habitus, capital, and fields, this article sheds light on the practice of celebrity public relations to understand how publicists leverage cultural and social capital to construct legitimacy for their clients. This study contributes to a broader sociological understanding of celebrity public relations and opens new avenues for research in considering how publicity might translate into broader socio-political impacts.

Antonio Borges da Fonseca produced several newspapers and periodicals throughout his political life and in various places from north to south of Brazil. What gave it the greatest notoriety, however, was the so-called O Republico, which began in 1830 in Rio de Janeiro. This periodical allowed the publicists to debate their ideas and further inflate the political spirits that the capital of the empire was experiencing. With intense attacks on the monarchic system and the emperor, O Republico provided a differentiated view among so many newspapers produced by Borges da Fonseca. This article aims to analyze the publications of O Republico in its first stage, between 1830 and 1831, analyzing the main strategies of the publicist for the defense and propagation of his ideas, mainly the republic and federalism.

In his dedicatory letter to the Archbishop of Bremen the political publicist proceeded to accuse the Papacy, more wolf than pastor, of having intruded upon both church and secular authority, arrogating to its own monarchy the supreme Sacerdotium and the supreme Imperium. Abstract:
The relevance of the study is due to the lack of research on the speeches of prominent Ukrainian political and cultural figures of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries as a phenomenon of national publicism and the need to find spiritual lessons in the publicistic works of Oles Honchar, a prominent writer, public and political figure, which would inspire contemporaries, strengthen their sense of freedom and courage in confronting the Russian aggressor. The object of the study is Oles Honchar's speech "Time for Unity" at the First Congress of the International Association of Ukrainian Studies on 27 August 1990 and his handwritten, typewritten, and printed versions. The purpose of the study is to carry out a comprehensive analysis of Oles Honchar's speech "Time for Unity" in relation to the urgent problems of public life in Ukraine in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. This is the first time that we have studied Oles Honchar's speech in the context of its relevance today, using the artist's autographs and diary records. The journalistic legacy of this personality includes 1020 texts. A large group of works (193, 18.8 %) is represented by speeches; they are second only to articles. This is due to the social activism of their author, who could not stand aside from the pressing problems of the day and belonged to the cohort of those who were approaching the day of Ukraine's independence.A comparison of the speech's handwritten, typewritten, and printed versions shows that the writer sought a concise and accurate expression dictated by the genre diversity of the speech – the words at the opening of the congress, harmonisation of the composition elements and the author also considered the social status of the audience. The idea of Ukrainian unity permeates the entire text of Oles Honchar's speech. The lexeme "unity" performs a semantic and architectonic function: it forms the plot, becomes the core of the compositional structure of a publicistic work, enables the author to move easily in time and space, and rise to the philosophical level of understanding national problems. The interconnection of the two main themes of the speech "Time for Unity" – the revival of Ukraine and the unity of Ukrainians in the world is realised by the publicist through the consideration of the relations between the diaspora and mainland Ukraine in the new time.Oles Honchar's publicism, written topically, has not lost its significance for new generations of Ukrainians.

Abstract:
The study reviews the activities of one of the leading authors of the “Igbal” newspaper, Haji Ibrahim Gasimov. In his works, the publicist covered the most important socio-political and socio-cultural problems of his time, expressed his attitude to them and conducted analytical work on their generalization and forecasting. He lived in turbulent times, where global problems affected not only the country, but all of humanity. All of them, having passed through the filter of G. Gasimov’s pen, appeared on the pages of “Igbal”. Addressing the leading issues of the time, such as the promotion of education and culture, instilling a national spirit in people, Islam, religion and politics, the ongoing political processes, and the protection of women’s rights, the publicist ac-tively wrote in every issue of the newspaper about ignorance, religious fanaticism, and the need to protect women’s rights. He persevered against oppression, not as an ordinary citizen, but as a force that could influence the course of events, which at the same time changed their course, he could direct them. This fighting can be clearly seen in his works published by “Igbal” in almost every issue. The workes, which are almost a century old, are relevant and have not lost their value to this day. They played an exceptional role in shaping public opinion, spreading science and culture. This process is influenced by the deep observation of the publicist, as well as by his patriotic, effective civic position.

Emma Goldman was an important anarchist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, whose eventful life was impacted by the political developments of her time. She also had to live off her writings, especially once she had been deported from the United States. In this regard, and as a publicist, Goldman often had to make pragmatic decisions. She tried to sell her autobiography Living My Life (1931) for the best price and acted like a true capitalist publicist. The present article traces Goldman's path as editor of Mother Earth to her later problems and negotiations with US publishers and provides a deeper insight into the financial necessities that forced her to accept the necessity to forget her anarchist ideals, at least when she dealt with possible contract partners for her books.

Abstract:
From the onset, the traditional image of the prominent Russian conservative of the second half of the 19th century, the famous founder of the Moscow Vedomosti newspaper M. N. Katkov as a “defender of traditional values” was questionable. Representatives of various ideological camps: Westernist liberals, Slavophiles and nationalists from the editorial board of the Novoye Vremya newspaper were united in viewing him as a smart opportunist, who had chosen a convenient time for supporting the government to forward his personal ambitions. Despite the fact that speeches in defense of the Church could indeed be heard in Katkov’s journalism and his publications, in many ways they occupied rather an instrumental place in the system of his ideological views, which was far from the fi rst and which was repeatedly noted at the time by both Slavophiles and church traditionalists per se, such as T. I. Filippov and K. N. Leontiev. In this respect, Katkov came to be rehabilitated by Soviet historiography, which in a simplifi ed form argued the unity of “the liberal” and “the conservative” periods of his activity. This simplistic and ideologized image of Katkov is still present in modern research. Post-Soviet, especially conservative-minded, authors often tend to present Katkov as a consistent monarchist guardian and a no less consistent Orthodox conservative. And yet, Katkov’s political ideology assumed the transformation of Russia into a centralized and homogeneous national state of the European type, in which there could be no place for status in statu. Maintaining the unconditional loyalty to the Orthodox Church, at the same time the Moscow publicist denied its political subjectivity. By his propaganda of “the Russian Catholicism” and “the Russian Judaism”, Katkov came to be the fi rst one in the Russian conservative tradition to separate the Russian national identity from religion as such and Orthodoxy in particular.

Abstract:
The question of the attitude of the famous church publicist Bishop Andrey (Ukhtomsky) to the theory and practice of socialism in Russia and the USSR is considered. For the first time, the views of the bishop on the similarities and differences between socialist ideology and the Orthodox faith, starting with the events of the First Russian Revolution and ending with the Soviet period, are reconstructed and analyzed. Particular attention is paid to Andrey (Ukhtomsky)’s criticism of socialism, professed by left political forces and attempts to oppose it with a different socialism, which the church publicist called Christian and ecclesiastical. The legitimacy of classifying the bishop as a supporter of Christian socialism is questioned and a view is proposed according to which Bishop Andrey’s opposition to political socialism was forced and was intended to deprive the socialists of the monopoly on knowledge about the just reorganization of society, as well as to conduct polemics with the adherents of socialism in a way they understand language. It is argued that changing political views and attitudes towards various forms of state power throughout his life, Andrey (Ukhtomsky) remained consistent in upholding his views, both on the nature of socialism and on the ways to overcome it.

Abstract:
Th e article concerns the little-studied aspects of the biography of the prominent political fi gure, literary critic, publicist and prose writer Yakov Veniaminovich Braun in order to reconstruct in its entirety the social and politi-cal activity of this multifaceted personality. Th e author examines the unrealized literary projects connected with the left -wing Socialist Revolutionary movement and repressions against Braun. Th e study is based on the archival and investiga-tive materials, publications in newspapers and magazines, documents of the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History and the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art. Most of the sources are introduced into scientifi c discourse. Th roughout 1917–1933, Braun was an active participant in the Socialist Revolu-tionary and Left Socialist Revolutionary movements, member of the All-Ukrai-nian Committee of the Socialist Revolutionary Party in 1918–1919, secretary of the Party of Left Socialist Revolutionaries (syndicalists) of Ukraine in 1922–1923, member of the Central Committee of the United Left Socialist Revolutionary Party of Ukraine in 1922–1923 and the Central Bureau of the Association of LeftNarodnik Movement (Association of the Party of Left Socialist Revolutionaries and the Union of Socialist Revolutionary Maximalists). He participated and acted as a speaker at party congresses and conferences. During his imprisonment and exile (with interruptions) in 1923–1933, Braun followed a left Narodnik direction and maintained contacts with like-minded people. However, breaking with them did not save him from arrest and execution in 1937. Braun’s activities as a party publicist can be traced through his articles in the newspapers Narodnoe Delo and Bor’ba and magazines Klich, Znamya and Narodnoe Prosveshchenie, as well as in the collection of articles Puti revolutsii. Also of interest are the unrea-lized literary projects of the publishing house “Revolutionnoye Tvorchestvo” and the magazine of the same name with the participation of Ivanov-Razumnik and Sergei Esenin. Particularly noteworthy is the letter from Braun to I.Z. Steinberg with a mention of his lecture titled Esenin and Mayakovsky in Kharkov in the spring of 1922 and a letter to Vladimir Mayakovsky dated November 8, 1927, in which Braun narrates about the book Esenin and Mayakovsky that he planned to write.

Perevalova, Elena V., and Maria V. Petrushina. "“The Tribune of Strastnoy Boulevard”: The language personality of the publicist Mikhail Katkov." Tekst. Kniga. Knigoizdanie, no. 36 (2024): 51–70. https://doi.org/10.17223/23062061/36/4.

Full text
Abstract:
The article attempts to analyze the language personality of the authoritative conservative publicist Mikhail Katkov, who in 1863-1887 was the editor-publisher of the influential newspaper Moskovskie Vedomosti. The relevance of the stated problem is due to the growing interest in modern science in the study of the conservative press of the second half of the 19th century, its influence on public consciousness and the formation of ideological attitudes of the audience. The scientific novelty of the research consists in the introduction of new, previously unexplored material into scholarly discourse, in the analysis of Katkov’s journalistic texts for the purpose of studying the structure and content of his language personality. The methodological basis of the study consists of works of Yu.N. Karaulov, W. von Humboldt, V.V. Vinogradov, E.D. Polivanov, M.M. Bakhtin, G.I. Bogin, V.A. Maslova, V.V. Ledeneva, T.V. Shmeleva. The level model of language personality proposed by Yu.N. Karaulov was implemented in the study of Katkov’s language personality in the form of a comprehensive analysis of all three components: lexicon, thesaurus, and pragmaticon. The analysis of the thesaurus allowed us to demonstrate how Katkov’s views were embodied in the concepts he implemented, the hierarchy of these concepts, as a result of the publicist’s political preferences. The article presents a full range of language tools and techniques, with special attention paid to metaphor, which allowed us to conclude that Katkov’s texts generated a type of journalistic metaphor new for that time, the main function of which is evaluation. A detailed study of the thesaurus and the lexicon that embodies its features allowed us to conclude that the highest level of Katkov’s language personality - the pragmatist - reflects the national specifics and features of the publicist’s linguistic and axiological picture of the world. In the course of the analysis, it became obvious that a large role in Katkov’s texts, and therefore in the structure of his language personality, is played by various means of syntax. First of all, this represents such an important feature of Katkov as the logical presentation. The main functional type of text used by Katkov is reasoning; the syntactic forms and structures used by the publicist implement a variety of strategies and tactics of persuasion, which allows us to consider his language personality as the quintessence of oratorical skill. It is revealed that the language personality of Katkov reflects the peculiarities of his worldview, scientific and logical thinking, moral and ethical ideas, political views, national and cultural mentality. The linguostylistic and pragmatic analysis of the texts of Katkov’s publications allowed us to conclude that his language personality is characterized by a variety of linguistic representations and a variety of possibilities in the expression of meanings, which was one of the reasons for such a strong influence of his journalistic texts on the audience. The authors declare no conflicts of interests.

The article is devoted to the consideration of the socio-political views of the Russian publicist and writer V.P. Meshchersky. V.P. Meshchersky was a supporter of right-wing views, assessed as conservative and protective. His views were expressed for the most part in his letters, journalistic articles in the magazine "Citizen" and in novels. In his activity, he was characterized by the desire to prevent the impending crisis of state power in Russia by protective measures: the preservation of autocracy, the support of the nobility, the priority of Orthodoxy. Evaluation of V.P.'s activity Meshchersky for a long time wore an exclusively negative coloring, which is not entirely fair. Some of his ideas (the prevention of wars and international conflicts, the union of monarchical states) were true and fair.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of V.S. Solovyov's “Sunday Letters”. Aspects of the author's dialogue with the reader within the framework of this publicist cycle are considered. The relevance of the topic is based on the importance of this work for understanding the writer’s last work, “Three Conversations” and the general direction of the development of his publicist writing. The “Sunday Letters” have relatively recently come to the attention of Solovyov scholars and remain little studied. On the basis of the main premises of M.M. Bakhtin’s concept of speech genres, the article examines the works included in the Solovyov cycle from a communicative perspective, highlighting several perspectives: author – addressee, author – text, addressee – text. This approach is new for Solovyov studies and productive due to the combination of literary and linguistic methods of scientific research. As a result, the general scheme of the way Solovyov the publicist constructs a communicative act with the reader established and some features of his dialogue with the audience are characterized. The article concludes that 1) Solovyov's main goal in publishing “Sunday Letters” was to organize a regular and direct dialogue with the Russian reading public on a wide range of social, political, philosophical, religious and moral issues (reflecting the influence of the tradition of F.M. Dostoevsky’s “Writer’s Diary”); 2) the author of the cycle primarily implemented an educational and prophetic creative strategy; 3) during 1897–1898 Solovyov distinguished between various sections of the reading public, corrected his position regarding the addressee; 4) the choice of the genre form of the work (letter-sermon) was not accidental, it was justified by the nature of the speech situation, participants of dialogue, specifics of communication sphere, subject of speech and determined the uniqueness of his style; 5) the style of the Solovyov cycle is characterized by heterogeneity, unevenness, excitement. These conclusions clarify the specifics of the author's position in the works of Solovyov the publicist, the character of his implementation of creative strategies.

The article considers the problem of taking the decision by the publicist and political thinker N. V. Ustryalov to return to his homeland from Far East. Based on the analysis of the materials of his correspondence with his friend N. G. Dikii, which happened in 1930-1935, the author reveals the influence of the unstable economic and political situation in the area of Chinese Eastern railway on various aspects of the life of a well-known “smenovekhovets” in Harbin. Also the author analyzes the escalating of difficulties and problems that he faced in service, teaching, publicistic, socio-political and other spheres of activity; reveals the reasons for the compilation and break up of the relationship with his colleagues and recent associates, which became conditions and circumstances that caused this choice. But the defining role in N. V. Ustryalov’s decision to return home was a factor of his personal motivation - a deep yearning for his homeland, sense of duty to the state and the people, the desire to help his homeland in conditions of its large-scale transformation. The author also highlights the fact that the thinker’s reflections about coming back are permeated not only with nostalgia for his homeland and patriotic thoughts, but also with painful worrying, anxiety and concern for his family and possible lack of demand in the USSR. An irresistible desire to return to his homeland faced in his mind the premonition of the irreversible tragic consequences of his choice.

Abstract:
The publicist and editor Raphael Butti was one of the pioneers of Iraqi social and political journalism. The study of his 400 articles between 1920 and 1956, have shown that the predominant direction of his work, the impulse for writing was the desire to promote and develop democratic institutions in Iraq. The subject matter of his publications was related to the need for freedom of choice, gender equality, freedom of speech and the press, and increasing the level of education of the individual. Applying the methods of problem-thematic, lexical-stylistic and comparative analysis of Rafael Butti's articles, the authors have revealed that almost all his articles are permeated by the theme of patriotism and reflect his broad outlook. At the same time, the relative paucity of the language and creative style of the Iraqi publicist was found, which is expressed, in particular, in the limited use of artistic expression. Rafael Butti focuses primarily on intellectual enlightenment, compensating for the lack of emotional messages with long analytical phrases, lengthy paragraphs, and lengthy headings.

In this article I explore the connection between this precarious time and the emergence of the sociopolitical concept of morality in New Granada (present-day Colombia) during the first thirty- five years of the republic (1818–1853). I focus on two conceptual moments as exemplified ed by the reflections put forth by Simón Bolívar (1783–1830), military and political leader of the independence period, and José Eusebio Caro (1817–1853), publicist, poet, and political ideologue of the Conservative Party.

Ever since Jacob Burckhardt dismissed him as “the first thoroughly dishonest historian of antiquity,” Eusebius has been an inviting target for students of the Constantinian era. At one time or another they have characterized him as a political propagandist, a good courtier, the shrewd and worldly adviser of the Emperor Constantine, the great publicist of the first Christian emperor, the first in a long succession of ecclesiastical politicians, the herald of Byzantinism, a political theologian, a political metaphysician, and a caesaropapist. It is obvious that these are not, in the main, neutral descriptions. Much traditional scholarship, sometimes with barely suppressed disdain, has regarded Eusebius as one who risked his orthodoxy and perhaps his character because of his zeal for the Constantinian establishment.

The article for the first time analyzes the circumstances of V.V. Rozanov joining the staff of “Novoye Vremya” journal edited by A.S. Suvorin. It focuses on the support given by Rozanov to Suvorin at the critical moment of the latter’s career when the committee of the Writers’ Association was planning to accuse the editor of the secret collusion with the government. The accusation could discredit both the editor and the journal. The article highlights the connection between anti-Suvorin campaign and the attempt to start the new popular newspaper “Rossiya”. Rozanov supported Suvorin and even prepared a reply to the committee of Writers’ Association that marked the beginning of the long-lasting cooperation and confidential relationships between the editor and the publicist. Though Rozanov’s literary manner didn’t quite conform to the format of a popular newspaper, Suvorin initially published a lot of his articles as it was necessary to fill the gap after the resignation of two rather productive authors as the result of the above mentioned events. Working for “Novoye Vremya” and communicating with Suvorin Rozanov gradually developed a new manner of publicism and began to cover not only the topics that interested him but also political issues of general interest.

Wilhelm Feldman – a writer, publicist, literary critic, activist and political thinker, legendary editor of “Krytyka” in Kraków – was also an initiator and participant in many Young Poland discussions. The article is an attempt to reconstruct the basic ideas and intuitions present in Feldman’s major historical works and minor sketches. The author argues that they are philosophical in nature and form a coherent position. His philosophy combines romantic inspirations with the positivist programme of organic work and with elements of independence socialism, constituting an important element in the philosophical thought of Polish modernism in Galicia.
