This thesis is concerned with Grice's Theory of Conversational Implicature and its application to the translation of Arabic political speeches into English. In order to conduct successful communication, trice has suggested that interlocutors (in this case, politicians) are expected to observe the Cooperative Principle (PP) which is underpinned by four maxims: Quality (tell the truth), Quantity (be informative), Relevance (stick to the point), and Manner (be clear). Using the fine-grained methodology of Conversation Analysis, the video recordings of four political speeches delivered by a Mexican Governor were examined. Since previous studies have found that speakers design sequences of talk to elicit the audience’s applause (Atkinson, 1984a, 1984b; Bull, 2003; Heritage and Greatbatch, 1986), the departure point for this thesis was to find where applause occurred in order to examine what sequences of talk elicited it. This thesis explores the nature of ambivalence in Maori political thought as expressed during John Ballance's tour of seven Maori districts in 1885. A microhistorical study of Maori speeches recorded during the tour, undertaken by Ballance as minister of Native Affairs, reveals three overlapping points regarding Maori political thought in the late nineteenth century. Firstly, despite a lack of power in processes of government and the effects of numerous land laws, Maori remained optimistic at the possibility of gaining equality, an optimism generated by the very act of Ballance's visit to Maor

Abstract:
Initially proposed in 2001, the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act (DREAM Act) continues to be relevant after nearly 20 years of debate. The year 2010 was significant because there seemed to be some possibility of passage. This study investigated the ways in which the DREAM Act discourse was framed that year by supporters and opponents. Selected Congressional speeches of three supporters and three opponents were analyzed using the approach to frame analysis developed by Schön and Rein. Accordingly, attention went to each individual's metacultural frame (i.e., culturally sh

Abstract:
Pronouns carry considerable importance in language. The speaker’s identity and connection to the audience emerges through the consistent use of certain pronouns (De Fina, 1995). This research is about the use of we, us, and our in political discourse. Specifically, their use will be examined in the inaugural addresses of George W. Bush in 2005 and Barack Obama in 2009. The aim of this research is to examine the frequencies and the co-occurrences of these pronouns and then compare their use in these two speeches. More specifically, how do the pronouns examined affect the message and enhance hea

Abstract:
In this analysis of public speeches from four American presidents from the Republican party, the ways in which those presidents discuss and position American defense activities and stances are examined, to track the progression from the 1960s to the present. Presidents from one party were chosen, who presided over a period of active armed conflict or cold war. The addresses analyzed comprised public addresses to Congress or the American people. The analysis groups recurring frames--conceptually developed based on framing and agenda setting theories--into thematic categories for each president.
