This work attempts to seek new insights in understanding the archeological phenomena traditionally labelled as the western Bronze Age and the coastal Pre-Roman cultures of Finland (1500 BC-AD 1), by studying the phenomena from a socioeconomic interaction and practice oriented community perspective. The basic line of thought is that it was the everyday life of the local agents and their interactions that constituted the local communities. Communities are seen as built from the bottom up by the interaction of various local agents. The organised agents, their practices and their mutual interactio

This thesis studies the effects of the internationalisation of the economy on various regional economic policies and is organised as follows: Chapter 1 provides a general introduction. Chapter 2 studies the effects of industrial policy on manufacturing firms' location decisions. Industrial policy provides a productive local public good, financed by locally-raised tax revenues. Building on the 'new economic geography' literature, two new, opposing agglomeration forces are described: first, taxation reduces the market size - making a region less attractive - second, production cost fall - making

We set up a general equilibrium trade model with heterogeneous agents allowing for country asymmetries. We show that under international trade compared to autarky, a unilateral tax increase leads to a less pronounced decline in aggregate real income in the reforming country, while income inequality is reduced to a larger extent for sufficiently small initial tax rates.
