Pollen tube growth rates and pollen tube attrition were examined in Cucurbita pepo plants grown in an experimental garden. Two separate studies were performed utilizing controlled hand-pollinations. First, female flowers were hand-pollinated and collected at intervals over a 22-h period. Examination of stained pollen tubes in these pistils under reflected UV light revealed variation in growth rate: after approximately 7 h, the fastest growing pollen tubes grew at nearly twice the rate of the mass of the pollen tubes. Pollen tube growth rates in legitimate cross- and self-pollinations were compared by controlled hand pollination in two varieties of Pontederia cordata L. (Pontederiaceae). In each pollen–stigma combination pollen germinated readily on stigmas and pollen tubes penetrated stigmatic tissue. Pollen tube length in styles was positively correlated with pollen size. In most pollinations legitimate pollen tubes grew more rapidly in styles than self pollen tubes. This difference was statistically significant in most comparisons. Inhibition of incompatible pollen tubes was either in the style or ovary.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The original objective was to determine the impact of temperature on floral behavior and pollen tube growth and humidity on the proportions of self-, close, and cross-pollinated avocado fruit on trees growing in humid, coastal and dry, inland CA climates. Because self-pollination was demonstrated to be the prevailing mode of pollination in Florida cultivars in warm humid conditions, it was appropriate to determine if similar rates of self-pollination occur in a dry Mediterranean climate present in California. The conclusions of the work were that despite limiting cool temperatures present in V

Abstract:
During the evolutionary process of speciation in plants, naturally occurring barriers to reproduction have developed that affect the transfer of genes within and between related species. These barriers can occur at several different levels beginning with pollination-barriers and ending with hybrid-breakdown. The interaction between pollen and pistils presents one of the major barriers to intra- and inter-specific crosses and is the focus of this research project. Our long-term goal in this research proposal was defined to resolve questions on recognition and communication during pollen-pistil
