Many persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are chiral. These pollutants are generally released into the environment as racemates, but frequently undergo alterations in enantiomeric composition as soon as they are subjected to life chemistry processes. Enantiospecific analysis of chiral POPs is important since enantiomers of chiral compounds often exhibit differences in biological activity, and most biochemical processes in nature are stereospecific. For abiotic processes, such as air-water gas exchange, deposition and long-range air transport, enantiomeric patterns of POPs may be used as chemic

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are a set of toxic chemicals that are persistent in the environment and able to last for several years before breaking down. POPs are a group of chemicals that have been extensively studied over the last few years. The main reason that these chemicals have received so much scientific attention is the myriad of negative effects they have on the environment and human health. The properties that cause the deleterious effects include a high molecular stability, rendering them highly persistent. Added to this is the lipophilic and hydrophobic nature of the compounds. POPs will thus tend to bio-accumulate and bio-magnify in the environment, causing a direct threat to humans and wildlife. To address this threat, the Stockh

Abstract:
The deep-sea has long been considered the last region one Earth to be untouched from anthropogenic disturbances. However, studies have shown that the deep-sea is not as pristine as once assumed and it has been suggested that it may actually act as a sink for persistent organic pollutants (POPs). POPs are ubiquitous in the environment and of particular concern due to their high persistence, toxicity, bioaccumulation potential and long-range transport. Although POPs have been detected in a range of deep-sea organisms from around the world, little is known on the potential impact anthropogenic co

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), bisphenol A (BPA) and pthalates may increase the risk of respiratory infections and allergic diseases in infants and the effects might last until, at least, adolescence. Cytokines and biomarkers of inflammation can provide information of the mechanisms behind such associations. Data from the “Infancia y Medioambiente” (INMA) population-based birth cohort project and from six other existing European birth cohort studies have been used in the present thesis, which also includes a systematic review. Environmental contamination of legacy contaminants has been of great concern worldwide because of their persistence and toxicity to humans and marine species. Only in the last decade, the presence and accumulation of emerging contaminants, and, consequently, their adverse effects in marine biota have been considered. The present research was performed to compare the different distribution of legacy contaminants (Pesticides, PCBs and PAHs) and emerging contaminants (UV filters and Fragrances) in the liver and muscle tissues of three tuna species living in different locations and with different

Obesity is a worldwide problem affecting both children and adults. Genetic, physiological, environmental, psychological, social and economic factors interact in varying degrees, influencing body weight and fat distribution and the progress of obesity. Moreover, some anthropogenic chemicals have proven to be endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) with the potential to interfere with different actions of hormones in the body. EDCs may thereby disrupt homeostasis, modifying developmental, behavioral and immune functions in humans and animals, and also promoting adiposity. Because hormones generall

Type 2 diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in adults and youths. Persistent organic pollutants and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), such as pesticides, dioxins, and organochlorines, are omnipresent and persist in the environment with potential for human exposure via contaminated air, waterways, soil, and human food supply. EDCs have been correlated with diabetes incidence and risks. Residential proximity to hazardous waste sites (HWS) has been correlated with increased hospital admission rates for diabetes. Given that nowadays people spend more than a 90% of their time indoors, the exposure to this cocktail of pollutants is a challenge that must be handled. Modern societies produce large quantities of municipal solid waste (MSW), which is commonly disposed of by incineration. This has several advantages: it reduces the waste’s volume and sterilizes it while also enabling energy recovery. However, MSW incineration has some notable disadvantages, the most widely debated of which is probably the production and release of persistent organic pollutants (POP) such as polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF), dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD), biphenyls (PCB) and naphthalenes (PCN). Abstract:
Permafrost thaw slumping along lakeshores in lakes of the Mackenzie Delta Uplands, NT is known to alter water chemistry significantly. Its impact on benthic communities and persistent organic pollutant (POP) behaviour in lakes is not known. Benthic invertebrate communities responded to slumps through changes to community composition and size spectra. Larger taxa tended to dominate in lakes with slumps. Variability in biomass size spectra was related to total dissolved nitrogen concentration and slump size. Concentrations of POPs in Gammarus were negatively correlated with total phosphorus
