The topic of integrative processes of grouping and ethnic assemblages carried out by descendants of immigrants that have settled in Brazil has been an gaining visibility within the social sciences in Brazil. The objective of this thesis was to trace a network of relationships (of ethnic, political, religious or scientific nature, etc.) among Poles, their descendants (Polish-Brazilians) – and so many other human and non-human actors – who have demonstrated repertories of Polish ethnic mobilization in action (polities) through multiple socio-technical networks. In terms of methodology, I opted to use a qualitative approach that correlates ethnographic perspective techniques to ANT (Bruno Latour’s Actor-Network Theory) and to studies on ethnicity. The research process counted on building socio-technical descriptions and made visible – in effect a diverse network of negotiations and recognized ethnic activities – at the interface of diverse environments such as strategic actions from heterogeneous actors, who are also mediators of polities, that promote ethnic processes in the midst of a multifaceted and plural composition of collectivities in Brazil.

Full textIn 1919, French diplomacy aims at constructing the alliance between Poland and Czechoslovakia so as to make it the main pilar of its alliance system in the east of Germany. From July 1920 onward, this security policy is undermined by the dividing of the Silesia of Teschen, jointly decided by France and the Allies, as it turns out to be unfavourable to the Polish. From 1924, with the bringing together of Prague and Warsaw, France starts to seriously contemplate the founding of a strategic barrier, closely linked to the French army, a barrier which would protect the eastern frontiers of post-locarnian Europe. But the rough outline of this triangular security policy as it is imagined by Paris does not survive the political upheavals of the second half of the twenties while French diplomats strive to reinforce collective security, staff officers try hard to make both the Polish and the Czechoslovakian armies aware of the stakes of their collaboration. These moves as well as the diplomats in Prague and Warsaw come up against the political turning of the Polish government after the coup d'etat of Marshal Pilsudski. When Hitler comes to power, the perception of a collective threat for the three countries does not cause any reaction. Whereas Warsaw has underpinned privileged relationships with Hungary, Bene consolidates the Little Entente, while the French government on the other hand let themselves be talked into the negociations of the Four Pact which are perceived as a betrayal by the eastern allies. The German-Polish non-aggression Pact drives Prague away from Warsaw for good. France proves powerless to check the crisis about the Polish minority in Czechoslavakia. In 1938, Czechoslovakia and Poland are but playthings in the hands of the great powers. The Polish government takes back the initiative with their ultimatum of September 30. It is for the Quay d'Orsay to try and convince Prague to give up Teschen two days after Munich

The aim of this work is to describe and analyze the linguistic beliefs of bilingual individuals in relation to the Pol (local Polish), namely, their perceptions and convictions, and then relate them to the attitudes expressed by these individuals. These linguistic attitudes can be observed through the real use of the language taking into account the terms of kinship (blood, spiritual and aliance(in-law)), aiming to perceive the maintenance of the Pol. or its substitution by the Pt.-RS (rio-grandense Portuguese). The research takes place in bilingual contexts (Pol./Pt.- RS), in two localities that belong to two southern states in Brazil: Aurea (Rio Grande do Sul) and Nova Erechim (Santa Catarina). The settlement of Aurea/RS began in 1906 with the arrival of Poles, who, according to IBGE data, constitute 92% of the municipality population. The first settlers of Nova Erechim/SC arrived in 1952, they were gaúchos descendants of Pole and Italian immigrants, originaly from Erechim/RS. Thus, there is a topodynamic relation between the two sites. This research becomes relevant as it addresses a minority immigration language, which lacks linguistic studies. The research is based on the Pluridimensional and Relational Dialectology (Thun, 1996, 1998, 2005, 2010), which contemplates the variational space and the plurality of informants. The data collection and the choice of the informants is based on the cross model developed by Thun (1996). Thus, the research considers the following dimensions: diatopic (Aurea/RS and Nova Erechim/SC), diagenerational (GII [55 years old or more] and GI [from 18 to 36 years old]), diasexual (male and female) and diastratic (Ca [with graduation or more] and Cb [from no schooling until high school]). The research, as well as the questionnaires used as a tool to collect the data, both questionnaires, one on linguistic beliefs and the other on kinship terms, are part of the Atlas das Línguas em Contato na Fronteira (2013). The analysis of the data led us to verify that in the two points researched, the Cb and the GII make more use of the minority language, in this case, the Pol.. The GI presents a considerable substitution of the Pol. by the Pt.-RS, indicating a considerable linguicide of the Pol.. Áurea/RS and Nova Erechim/SC presented 36% of Pol. maintenance. Whereas in Áurea/RS the language is still used in some social contexts, in addition to the family context, in Nova Erechim/SC it is used mainly in the family. The majority of the informants expressed positive beliefs in relation to the Pol., they are, however, aware of the little use they make of it, a fact that is perceptible, when analysing the informants' attitudes.

Full textThe subject matter and chronology indicated in the topic strictly define the object of my interest, and it includes not only the character of Berek Joselewicz, who has been treated by me as a symbol of a much wider phenomenon. This thesis has radically a chronological order. The plot of the narrative is Berek Joselewicz' s work. In Chapter One I am trying to present the shaping of the history and the lines of development of the Jews in Poland over many hundreds of years, which is essential for understanding the history of the Jews in general. Thus I encroach on the ground of a subjective history of historiography. In further part I reflect on the situation of the Jews in the Napoleonic France and its implications in the Duchy of Warsaw, which was a natural orbit of the Empire. Chapter Three is devoted totally to the essence of the issue and the main topic of this thesis, namely Berek Joselewicz. A Polish Jew, a member of the Polish legions, a character contrasting with an established stereotype of a Jew not fit for military service has not attained a biographic elaboration yet. The next chapter is a kind of Berek son's - Józef Berkowicz - biogram, who is in a way his natural inheritor. In Chapter Five I present the characters of not less interesting Polish Jewish heroes, who are presently half if not totally forgotten, and at the same time, in the part closing the chapter, I draw attention to a separate and enticing for a researcher issue, namely the Frankists, who departed from Judaism in favor of Catholicism or protestant confessions. In the annex, which crowns the thesis, I discuss the influence of Berek Joselewicz's legend on present - day generations, especially in the context of a modern perceiving of heroism. The thesis is crowned with an epilogue, in which I offer a slightly different outlook on the role of great Jews fighting for democratic and independence ideals in the Napoleonic period

Full textThe objective of my PhD thesis is to analyse historical commissions in the processes of rapprochement in Poland. Two cases studies are selected: the Polish-German school book commission and the Polish-Russian group for difficult matters. This work relies on two main sources:a series of interviews and research conducted in the archives. Other sources are complementary to this main corpus: participatory observations, analysis of political discourses, opinion polls and themedia. From one part to another, the points of view differ, or even oppose themselves. Historians then lookfor, according to Ricoeur, a narrative which could favour rapprochement. This dialogue on history matches exactly with what is asked for the historical commissions. Then, why are these commissions created ? how do they work and why do they continue to function ? The first hypothesis assumes that these commissions are created in an objective of rapprochement, or even reconciliation. The second one assumes that their functioning – and its continuation – depends on three variables:context, mandates, actors. My thesis is structured on five points. The first three parts concern each of the three variables cited:context, mandates, actors. The fourth part relates to the spheres of influence of the commissions and the debates they induce: politics and religion, public debate, scientific debate. The last partfocuses on the projects of the commissions: the common book or the centres for dialogue on the Polish-Russian side, the common historical schoolbook on the Polish-German one
