Abstract:
Novel, high molecular weight, high glass transition temperature, photocrosslinkable polyimide and poly(imide siloxane) homo- and segmented copolymers were prepared and characterized. The polyimides were synthesized by the classical two step method of first preparing soluble poly(amic acid) prepolymers by the reaction of various aromatic dianhydrides with aromatic diamines. The siloxane modified copolymers were synthesized by reacting single or mixed components of the aromatic dianhydrides with a mixture of aromatic amine and bis(3-aminopropyl) end blocked polydimethyl siloxane oligomers in a c

The interaction of water vapor with the surface and bulk of poly(imidesiloxane) copolymers has been characterized in an attempt to determine the important factors in the copolymer's resistance to water ingression. The multi-block copolymers were synthesized from benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride, bisaniline P and pre-formed amine-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) oligomers, with phthalic anhydride as an end-capping agent. Similar copolymers had been previously shown to have reduced water sorption, increased surface hydrophobicity, and increased adhesive durability in hot/wet environmen

High-performance polymers have found an extreme range of applications in the aerospace industry. Composites which have polymers incorporated in them can usually meet the needs of the design, and are the ideal materials for aerospace applications due to their light weight, high strength, and radar transparency. Phenyl-ethynyl terminated oligomers, for example, have found many uses in the aerospace industry. Phenyl-ethynyl terminated oligomers (AFR-PEPA-N) exhibit glass-transition temperatures of up to 450°C. Unfortunately crystals form due to interactions of the oligomers. These crystals do

Novel, polyand weight, randomly coupled, poly(imide siloxane) segmented copolymers were prepared and characterized. The copolymers were synthesized in two steps, the first involving the generation of soluble poly(amic acid) intermediates through reaction of various aromatic dianhydrides and aromatic diamines with a series of bis(aminopropyl)polydimethylsiloxane oligomers. These difunctional siloxane oligomers were prepared through the anionic equilibration of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane with bis(3-aminopropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane in the presence of a siloxanolate catalyst. A series of mixed matrix membranes based on zeolites incorporated into fluorinated polyimides were fabricated and characterized in this study. The first system consisted of a polyimide (6FDA-6FpDA-DABA) with carboxylic acid groups incorporated into its backbone and amine-functionalized zeolite particles (ZSM-2). FTIR indicated that these functional groups interacted with each other through hydrogen bonding. Both SEM and TEM images revealed good contact between the polyimide and the zeolite. Permeability studies showed a drop in He permeability suggesting there were no voids between the two

End-functional poly(ether amic acid)s and poly(siloxane imide) multiblock copolymers, comprised of 2,2'-Bis[4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]propane dianhydride (BPADA) / meta-phenylene diamine (MPDA) and hexafluoroisopropylidene-2-bis(phthalic acid anhydride) (6FDA) / meta-phenylene diamine (MPDA) polyimide segments, have been prepared and characterized to explore possibilities for controlling interface properties. Incorporation of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) components into polyimide backbone structures can yield advantageous properties such as low energy surfaces and low stress interfaces.
