The aim of this research is to evaluate the influence of castor-oil based polyurethane resin formulation (particularly proportion pre-polymer/polyol) in static bending properties of particleboards produced with Pinus sp. wood specie. Results related to modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity were determined. Four proportions polyol/pre-polymer were evaluated: 0.75:1; 1:1; 1:1.25; 1:1.5. Results showed improvement in MOR and MOE with increase of pre-polymer component. Proportion 1:1.25 (poliol: pre-polymer) was considered the most interesting once employs the least amount of the petr

Polyurethanes are the result of a reaction between an isocyanate and a polyol. The large variety of possible reagents creates many possible polyurethanes to be made, such as soft foams, rigid foams, coatings, and adhesives. This polymer is one of the most produced and consumed polymers in the world with an ever-increasing demand. Despite its usual petrochemical nature, research on bio-based polyurethanes flourishes due to the ease in creating bio-based polyols. It is well known that the traditional synthetic polymers, such as Polyurethane foams, require raw materials that are not fully sustainable and are based on oil-feedstocks. For this reason, renewable resources such as biomass, polysaccharides and proteins are still recognized as one of the most promising approaches for substituting oil-based raw materials (mainly polyols). However, polyurethanes from renewable sources exhibit poor physical and functional performances. Excessive use of plastic has raised pollution rates around the world, with plastic ending up in landfills or the sea, posing a threat to both terrestrial and aquatic life. Considering this problem, the widespread use of polyurethanes (PUs) in many industries has resulted in unavoidable PUs pollution in everyday life. Polyurethanes are a class of materials which can be regarded as filling the gap between rubbery elastomers and rigid plastics and metals. They can exhibit both high elongation and resilience, while retaining high modulus which make them unique for a wide variety of applications in which both stiffness and extensibility is needed. It is now widely accepted that the diverse properties of these copolymers are attributed to the existence of a two phase microstructure. One phase is regarded as a glassy or hard segment, whereas the other phase is considered to be rubbery and to give soft segments. T

Abstract:
Polyurethane, as a versatile polymer prepared by the polyaddition of isocyanates and hydroxyl group containing compounds, is widely used in the automotive industry and with an upcoming change of European legislation becomes recycling increasingly important as an alternative to landfilling or incineration. Glycolysis is one of the chemical degradation processes used to transform polyurethane waste using simple glycols as the degradation agents into a raw material. Single phase glycolysis was used to produce recycled polyol from polyurethane semi-rigid foam dedicated for headliner production. Th

The prime aim of this work is to enhance the energy absorbing capabilities of e-glass/epoxy composite under low velocity impact using plasticizing modifiers. Epoxy terminated polyol at 5–15 phr loading levels as plasticizing modifier was mixed into two-phase SC-15 epoxy resin system by a high speed mechanical stirrer. Modified epoxy resin system was then used to fabricate E-glass/epoxy composites by hot press processing. Low velocity impact test at two different energy levels was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of incorporating plasticizing modifier on impact properties of these c

Polymer nano-composites (PNC) are polymers which are reinforced with less than 5% by volume of nano-sized particles with high aspect ratios (L/h > 300). Compared to conventional composites, where the reinforcement is on the order of microns, the nano-composites are reinforced on the order of a few nanometers with advantages in processing and toughness. Nano-composites of epoxy clay have been studied where epoxy is mixed at high shear rates with clay. In our method of making nano-composites, an epoxy, Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol (DGEBA) A was mixed under high shear with organically modifie

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to develop a new conductive thermoplastic material with superior electrical properties. Currently, conductive polymers are typically filled with carbon or metallic particles [1]. However, these filled thermoplastics exhibit drawbacks such as high rigidity, toxicity, and high viscosity [2]. An alternative approach investigated in this work is to substitute these fillers with intrinsically conductive polymers like Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). PEDOT can achieve exceptional electrical conductivities (over 1000 S.cm-1) when combined with polymeric dopants

Abstract:
Commercial biodegradable polymers that combine high oxygen and water vapor barrier properties are scarce. In the packaging industry multilayer materials are usually used to achieve the barrier requirements, however they are usually not recyclable and will not biodegrade when discarded. The outstanding barrier properties of poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) make it an excellent candidate for a biodegradable oxygen and water vapor barrier packaging material. At the same time, its processability into films using standard converting equipment is a major challenge. Low melt strength, high processing temper

Abstract:
Growing concerns about ocean contamination from fossil fuel based polymers have created a demand for biodegradable alternatives, particularly for packaging applications. Thermoplastic starch (TPS) is a promising, eco-friendly biopolymer but has poor mechanical properties and high hydrophilicity. To address these issues, this article explores modifying starches through reactive extrusion and blending them with other biodegradable polymers. The study evaluates blends of native or acetylated starch with poly(butylene succinate) adipate (PBSA), using glycerol as a plasticizer and tartaric acid as

Abstract:
Welding technologies are state of the art for joining polymer composites, with one of the two joining parts considered laser transmissive (LT) and the other laser absorptive (LA). Pigments are often added to LT to enhance the crystallinity of the polymer matrix. However, pigments lead to internal scattering of the laser beam and the rate of transmission or the laser energy density decreases. Depending upon the type and amount of pigments added in the formulation of LT, the percentage of the laser beam transmitted, absorbed, or scattered differs. Laser welding performance depends on the laser e

This research has focused on chemical immobilization of RGD-containing peptides (RGD, RGDS, GRGDS) on the surface of tyrosine-derived polycarbonates having carboxyl pendant groups, poly(DTE-co-20%DT carbonate) through a two-step reaction. The first step involved an activation of carboxyl groups by N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) in the presence of 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDCI). The second step was a covalent attachment of RGD-containing peptides. The success of peptides. The success of peptide immobilization was determined by the ninhydrin method and x-ray photo

The diffusion scaling exponent value of BA is close to 0.5 which refers to the diffusion controlled mechanism, or the Fickian diffusion as the BA release mec
