Narladkar, Ashok S. "Conformation, morphology and glass transition of poly(lactic acid) in supported thin films." Lorient, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008LORIS122.
Full textSome physical properties of polymers when geometrically confined, e. G. The glass transition temperature (Tg), deviates from bulk material properties and thus may have significant implications for existing and emerging material properties. It appears that a detailed description and a fundamental understanding of the physical properties of currently used polymers in thin films, such as the emerging biodegradable and biocompatible poly lactic acid, would be useful in a variety of applications. Hence the objective of this study was to investigate the glass transition of polylactic acid thin films and the possible influence of the structuration and organisation of the macromolecules within the film, the crystalline content and surface interactions on the dynamics of the polymer. In the first part of this work, we probed, using the atomic force microscopy, the conformation of isolated polylactic acid macromolecules at the solid-air interface and studied the systematic effect of surfaces and solvents properties on the polymer conformation. We show that the macromolecules undergo a conformational transition from rigid rods to globular structures by decreasing the solvent and/or surface polarity. Using these different conformations, different film structures and organisations may be produced, as observed by AFM. If we clearly pointed out different intermediate structures, either formed from interconnected rigid entities or formed by globular aggregates, the final morphologies of films were found to be identically flat, smooth and independent of the initial polymer conformation. Following the film formation, annealing treatments were performed on the sample, prior to the glass transition temperature measurements, in order to equilibrate and remove the thermal history of the films. The influence of annealing treatment on the film properties, including the morphology and crystalline content was thus systematically studied by means of AFM and Raman spectroscopy. If the present study will not concentrate on the crystallisation process of PLA in thin film, the determination of the crystalline content within our thin film was nonetheless necessary to ensure a full description of the glass transition properties. Finally, in the last part of this work, the glass transition properties of the so-formed films will be described. The effect of the film thickness, the nature of the surface and the crystalline content on the glass transition of PLA thin film will be addressed. Furthermore, owing to the different nature of polylactic acid (pure L or D enantiomer, D and L copolymer or D/L stereocomplexes), different glass transitions behaviour were observed. This work provides new insights on the glass transition of polylactic acid thin films

Full textIn the environment the use of long-cycle polymers for agricultural purposes faced with a waste accumulation problem. Last decades the recent legislation involved an increased interest for biodegradable polymer materials. Before marketing of these new materials, it required to examine their inocuity for the environmental medium. In a biodegradability study of agricultural materials, an aerobic experimental set-up based on the Sturm test was elaborated. It consisted of bioreactors, thermoregulation system, electrovanes and CO2 infrared analyser (IRGA). It continuously measured bacterial carbon dioxide evolution during biodegradation test. The biodegradability results of different materials (principally make up plant polymers and polyesters) were compared. The agricultural soil bacteria degrading these materials were characterised by biomolecular analysis. In first this study used 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) analysis and used 16S-23S intergenic spacer region (ISR) analysis in second part. Results showed that the 16S-23S polymorphism was more efficient to discriminate bacterial sequences than 16S rDNA. This methodology was a rapid tool and allowed to specific bacterial race identification of degraded material. Concurrently to this study, degradation intermediate analysis was carried out with electronic microscopy and spectroscopic measurements (infrared and NMR). Surface erosion and chemical changes were found for all tested polymer materials. Results obtained with market film with confidential composition were exposed

Full textThis study deals with the molecular characterisation of the organic content of sewage sludges from Lorraine (Northeast of France). The 48 samples collected come from domestic wastewater treatment plant of different capacities (rural, small urban and urban) and from depuration stations treating dairy, cheese dairy and paper-mill effluents. The first part of this study enabled to make the inventory of the compound present in sewage sludges (1) under free form (soluble organic fraction - SOF), and (ii) Iinked to the macromolecular structure (insoluble organic fraction - lOF). To achieve that, the analytical tools used were respectively GC-MS on the one hand, and THM-GC-MS and Py-GC-AED on the other hand. The results of the analysis of the SOF and lOF provide equivalent information ln that they enable the differentiation of siudges according to thelr origin (food-processing, paper-mlli or domestic). A molecular fingerprint specific to each type of sludge was thus defined. Besides, all the domestic sludges are characterised by a geochemical petroleum background which testifies to a common diffuse pollution. Moreover, a variability in this geochemical background was observed for some domestic sludges, regardless of the size of the station, or of the degree of industrialisation of the region. These variations, which are essentially observed in the SOF, can be attributed to punctual or accidental pollution in the sewer system of domestic wastewater. The eventual goal of this work ls to provide molecular parameters in order to improve the monitoring and the control of wastewater sewer systems. The second part of this project studies the effects of biodegradation on the organic content of sewage sludges. Four samples were incubated at 24°C during 140 days in order to simulate the processes of degradation. The simultaneous analysis of the SOF and lOF of the biodegraded samples enabled the determination of the great tendencies of the evolution of the organic content during the experiments. A global pattern of biodegradation reactions can thus be proposed: the chemical degradation of the macromolecular structure of the lOF produces extractable compounds which will be either degraded themselves into lower molecular weight compounds or mineralised. Besides, organic markers resistant to biodegradation couId be determined and indexes of biodegradation proposed

Full textIn the context of global warming, more precise knowledge of atmospheric processes is needed to evaluate their impact on the Earth radiative budget. Clouds can limit the increase of temperature but this retroaction is not well understood due to a lack of knowledge of cloud media (like organic fraction composition). From the beginning of atmospheric studies, only chemical, especially radical, reactions was taken into account. However microorganisms metabolically active were found in cloud water arising questions about their role as biocatalyst. They are able to use carboxylic acids as nutriments, to degrade radical precursor (like H2O2) and to survive oxidative stress. The aim of this work is to quantify the impact of photochemical and biological processes on cloud chemistry composition. First, the concentrations of •OH, the most reactive radical, were evaluated and the influence of microorganisms on the concentrations were studied. A new method was developed in artificial medial before direct quantification of steady state •OH concentration in atmospheric waters (rain and cloud waters). Concentrations ranged from 10-17 to 10-15 M and did not change in presence of microorganisms. These measures were lower than concentrations estimated by chemical atmospheric models. A possible explanation was an underestimation of the main sink of this radical (organic matter). To better characterize this fraction, simple aromatic compounds were identified in cloud waters, phenol was found in the 8 samples analyzed. To go further, we studied phenol degradation in detail. Enzyme transcripts involved in phenol degradation were present in cloud water samples showing in situ activity of native bacteria. 93% of tested cultural strains, isolated from cloud waters, were able to degrade phenol. To quantify the relative contribution of radical versus microbial processes allowing phenol degradation, we performed photo-biodegradation experiment with a model strain (Rhodococcus erythropolis PDD-23b-28). Our results showed that these two processes participated equally to phenol degradation, suggesting that microorganisms and radicals can be involved in atmospheric natural remediation

Full textThe requirements of productivity, safety and quality impose the development of advanced control strategies for polymerization processes. Polymers produced by solution polymerization must have well-defined characteristics and physicochemical properties such as the polymer composition and molecular weight distribution. This work proposes an observer-based control structure in order to control the composition and the molecular weight of the polymer and in order to maximize the productivity of process. Firstly, we designed and compared three nonlinear observers. Then, we designed our control strategies based on a nonlinear input-output linearizing geometric approach. The performances of these proposed methods are illustrated through simulation studies involving the solution copolymerization of methylmetacrylate (MMA) and vinyl acetate (VAc)

Full textThe fouling of building-facade is caused by a main aesthetic phenomenon of biological weathering. The natural weathering favors the micro-organisms development. The biofouling kinetics depends on several parameters such as geographical situation, environmental conditions and physicochemical parameters of substrates. The main objective of this study is to highlight the influence of the mortar chemistry in relationship with its physical properties on the algal growth. The biofouling kinetics was followed on samples exposed outdoor and on samples tested in a laboratory bench which consists in spraying an algal culture on mortar specimens. In order to characterize the influence of the mortar chemistry on biofouling, two Portland cements (OPC) and two calcium aluminate cements (CAC) were tested. The influence of roughness, porosity and carbonation was also studied. The green algae Klebsormidium flaccidum were chosen for the accelerated laboratory tests because of its representativeness. The results obtain in laboratory and in situ show that CAC based mortars slow down the colonization kinetics compared to OPC based mortars. When porosity increases the biofouling kinetics increases and the effect of the mortars chemical composition is largely hidden. The carbonated mortars biofouling is achieved more quickly than uncarbonated ones especially for OPC based mortars. Finally, the rough surfaces are colonized faster whatever formulation tested. This parameter is mostly highlighted for in situ tests

Full textIn the current context of increased world population, it is necessary to built more infrastructures to meet the increasing industrial pressure. These constructions are erected on the sea as harbors, artificial islands or tourist accommodation. Concrete is mainly used because of its low-cost and durability in the marine environment. Like any material immersed in seawater, concrete is colonized by living organisms, becoming an habitat for their development. However, seawater is a very aggressive environment towards cementitious materials; physical, chemical and biological degradations are observed with time. Nowadays, physical and chemical degradations are well understood and reported in the literature but there is a lack of knowledge concerning biological effects. The aim of this thesis is first develop an experimental device in laboratory, allowing the colonization of cementitious material by microorganisms. Relevant tools to characterize the biofilm on the material were chosen to better understand colonisation’s kinetic. Chemical analysis of material and seawater were made to evaluate the actions of the biofilm on cementitious material. Different materials were produced to study the impact of the formulation on the colonization

Full textSince several years, plant roots aroused a new interest due to the environmental concern of their C input and storage in soils after decomposition subsequent to plant death or harvest. To better understand the role of the chemical quality of roots on their decomposition in soils and associated C dynamics, sixteen maize roots of hybrids and of brown-midrib mutants were used. These genotypes were earlier characterized by variations in the cell wall quality of above ground organs with respect to forage digestibility. The variations of root chemical quality were observed mainly on the cell wall polymers content and composition (polysaccharides and lignin). They translated into large differences in the kinetics of C mineralization during decomposition. The characterization of initial cell wall quality of the 16 roots together with the detailed study of the changes in cell wall quality during decomposition for 4 contrasted genotypes evidenced the role of soluble C on the short term, lignin fraction of the longer term, and the role of the organization of the cell walls in decomposition. .

Full textEmulsions are widely used in cosmetics. Depending on their composition, they exhibit various properties in terms of stability, texture, microstructure and macrostructure. At the present time, there a few to no studies in the literature interested in the effect of the emulsions composition on these different properties and the existing link between these characteristics that are implementing a command of the formulation. To address this dual problem, fourteen oil-in-water emulsions were formulated, with a controlled formulation protocol, for which the concentration of oil phase, acacia gum and xanthan gum evolve. Solutions of xanthan and acacia gums were also prepared to compare the effect of the gums on emulsions to the one on aqueous phase alone. The products were then characterized, in the most complete and objective way possible, to illustrate the influence of the composition on the properties of the emulsions and how these interact. Numerous parameters were collected through : ensory analysis, mcroscopic observations and static light scattering measurements, rhlogical and instrumental texture analyses. t can be concluded that the emulsions are well differentiates and that each of the emulsion parameter impacts its properties with significant differences, the oil phase content being preponderant overall. elationships between the data set were highlighted and suggest hypotheses about the impact of the formulation on the tactile properties of cosmetic creams

Full textThere is a tremendous need for developing advanced materials technologies for interfacing with brain and record neural activity. Such electrophysiological recordings are necessary for diagnostic purposes and brain/machine interfaces. Among the existing technologies, organic electronic devices constitute a promising candidate because of their mechanical flexibility and biocompatibility. The use of conducting polymers, which allow both ionic and electronic transport, allows new modes for interfacing with the biological milieu. This work presents an innovative process to incorporate the conducting polymer poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene: poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) onto electrodes for applications in electroencephalography (EEG). A step beyond conducting polymer electrodes is provided by the Organic Electrochemical Transistor (OECT). The primary advantage of using active devices is the local amplification they provide. This local amplification becomes extremely important in the case of electrophysiological signals, for which the amplitude is very low. The use of the OECT for various electrophysiological measurements is presented, done for clinical purposes like ECG or EEG, for new marketing studies like EOG, and for more fundamental neurological applications, like the recording in vitro of neuronal unitary activity. Bioelectronics is an inspiring field with broad scope. This thesis deals with applications of organic electronic devices in neuroscience. Other applications in diagnostics, biosensing, or drug delivery will offer huge opportunities for food safety, pollution control or even environmental applications

Full textSeveral billion nail polishes are sold every year throughout the world, and the market is still fast-growing. Despite a tightening of regulations over the past twenty years, the composition of varnishes remains problematic from an environmental point of view. The main obstacle to reach a 100% bio-based varnish is the secondary film-forming agent, or resin, which provides the additional adhesion, the gloss and the stability that nitrocellulose lacks. In this context, we have focused on understanding the physicochemistry of these complex systems in order to assist the design of new compatible biosourced resins through the establishment of structures-properties relationships. First, complete physicochemical characterizations (surface aspect and surface energy, composition, permeability) were carried out on native nails and two semi-synthetic models. An adhesion test was developed to evaluate the adhesion of formulations onto substrates. Correlated to physicochemical characterizations, these results allowed to identify the best model of the native nail and highlighted the adhesion mechanisms at the varnish-nail interface. In parallel, the "benchmarks" resins were characterized in order to define precise specifications according to their application performances. Thanks to the adaptation of prediction tools to polymers, we managed to link structural modifications to solubility and was validated using synthesized model oligoesters. The impact of some structural features on the gloss or the hardness of resins has been highlighted and the identified structures-properties relationships were confirmed through the evaluation of the performances of new bio-based polyester resins

Full textFibrous proteins (keratin, elastin, collagen, fibroin ...) make up to one third of the proteins ofmammals and birds. They are structural proteins with a protective and/or mechanical function. Silk appearsto be the ‘simplest’ model because it mainly consists of two small amino acids residues (alanine andglycine). Some silks have comparable or superior mechanical properties compared to those of syntheticfibres and could be used in technical applications (e.g. biomedical) if the variability of their properties canbe controlled. This work focuses on the structure of silks from: Bombyx mori (domestic silkworm)degummed or not, Nephila madagascariensis (wild spider, no sericin coating), GM Bombyx mori (includinga gene of Nephila) a recombinant spider silk 4RepCT (Escherichia Coli). Silk is analyzed by Ramanspectroscopy (and FTIR), uni-axial tensile testing, and also by the coupling of these methods. The analysisof the low wavenumbers region in Raman spectroscopy allowed the characterization of ordered regions of 2to 3 microns separated by about 60 microns. This is the first evidence of the heterogeneous structure ofsilk. Coupling with the uni-axial tensile test shows that these ordered regions are stressed under macroscopicdeformation, suggesting silk organization according to Prevorsek’s model, i.e. that the samemacromolecular chain belongs to both amorphous and ordered regions. The statistical study of themechanical properties of silkworm and spider silks shows great dispersion, but a good stability over time(decades). Genetic modification does not improve the fibres mechanical properties but a slight decrease intheir variability. Various strategies have been investigated to control the variability: bacterial production, solubilization of silk and films regeneration. The role of water in silk biosynthesis, as well as the effect ofvarious parameters (filtration, pH, drying ...) during the preparation of the films were studied. It wasconfirmed that the presence of protein aggregates promotes the organization in film and two types of filmswere prepared. The most amorphous ones have the most interesting mechanical properties, though only afew percent of those from the starting fibres. The fabrication of regenerated silk matrix compositesreinforced by silk fibres increases the strength and strain to failure. These initial results are encouraging forthe development of silk fibres/regenerated silk matrix composite materials

Full textClay minerals which can be found in granular materials strongly influence the rheological properties of fresh concrete. Due to the recent technical evolution of concrete, the understanding of the effect of clays in such systems takes on a significant industrial interest. This study was divided into two part, the first one dealing with the adsorption mechanisms of two polymers onto clay surfaces: a superplasticizer (PCP) and a polycation (F25). IR and SAXS-WAXS analysis together with adsorption measurment revealed that superplasticizer are adsorbed by clays and that the used of polycation inhibites clays-PCP interactions. The adsorption process of F25 onto clays by cationic exchange explains the preferential adsorption of cationic compounds rather than PCP and the restructuration of clay particles at the nano and micronic scale during the adsorption. In a second part, the rheological study of granular suspensions revealed a strong effect of clay particles on the flow behaviors of such systems. The rheological study of pure clay suspensions allowed the modelisation of the effect of clays on granular suspensions using excluded volume. In this case, the anistropic features of clays particles characterized by various technics (TEM, SAXS-WAXS) explains water retention properties of such nanometric minerals

Full textBiodegradable aliphatic polyesters such as poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL), poly(glycolide) (PGA) or poly(lactide) (PLA) are widely used in biomedical applications. When employed as an implantable material, the control of the surface properties of polyesters is of great interest because biochemical reactions occur on the surface or at interfaces. This work proposes a simple and versatile method to immobilize simple molecules, macromolecules, and biomolecules on PLA surfaces while preventing polymer degradation. The method is based on a one-pot, two-step procedure, first developed in solution with PCL and comprises an anionic activation under selected conditions followed by propargylation to form a ¡°clickable¡± PLA surface. This methodology is then employed to generate bioactive surfaces, namely antibacterial PLA surfaces and MRI-visible PLA surfaces. In a first place, chemical strategies are developed and optimized in homogeneous systems using PCL. Subsequently, PLA surfaces are modified, under heterogeneous conditions, by grafting of well-defined ¦Á-azido-functionalized poly(quaternary ammonium)s and an ¦Á-azido-functionalized complex of gadolinium to the propargylated PLA surface using "click" chemistry

Full textPolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are major persistent pollutants in the environment that are recognized as highly toxic to living organisms. Numerous studies were carried out on the fate of PAHs in soil and in plant rhizosphere and highlighted the major contribution of biodegradation processes and of the sorption to soil constituents. However, a lack of knowledge remains about the fate of PAHs in the soil and especially their location in soil compartments as well as the nature and the behavior of degradation products. The main objectives of the thesis were: (a) to localize PAHs and their derived products within soil compartments (organic matter, minerals, microorganisms and plant), and (b) to quantify and identify the organic compounds forming bound residues. For this purpose, we used two approaches: (i) the monitoring of a labeled PAH, the 13C-phenanthrene (13C-PHE), in a spiked soil planted or not to determine by IRMS and NanoSIMS the 13C-distribution into compartments and to identify derived compounds of 13C-PHE by 13C-RMN et TD/pyGCMS. (ii) the distribution and localization of aged and freshly spiked PAH contamination in a brownfield soil to study the impact of organic matter and minerals (using soil densimetric fractionation) in the PAH retention. More than 40% of C from 13C-PHE remained in the soil after 14 days of ryegrass growth. The 13C-enrichment in plant tissue was similarly to the soil enrichment (E13C ≈ 0.04 at.%) indicating uniform uptake of 13C-PHE between the soil and plant. NanoSIMS images acquired for roots confirmed this global enrichment in the plant. 13C-Hospots were also observed in the rhizosphere, and on the basis on their size, their shape and their elemental composition in C, N and S, they were identified as bacteria, which emphasize their contribution to the fate of PAHs in soil. In the industrial soil, most of the PAHs were found attached to the free OM. However, the freshly spiked PAHs in the soil were significantly associated with organo-mineral associations containing quartz, feldspars and phyllosilicates

Full textThe aim of this study is the analysis of structure and transfer mechanisms through chitosan based food packaging materials with incorporated carvacrol as a model of antimicrobial active substance. Integration of composition parameters, structure, processing and drying of chitosan systems is correlated to its physico chemical and functional properties. Understanding and detailed analyses of processing parameters is crucial in production of active chitosan coatings applied on conventional materials such as polyethylene. So, the knowledge of composition and microstructure in association to environmental conditions, control the retention and the release kinetics of carvacrol from chitosan film. Water vapour was crucial parameter that strongly influenced adsorption, swelling and plasticization of chitosan based films, as well as thermal, surface and mechanical properties. By changing the matrix structure, penetrating water molecules decreased gas barrier efficiency and increased release of carvacrol. Furthermore, release of carvacrol in the headspace was correlated to the antimicrobial efficiency and to the organoleptic impact on packed food products. Such investigation highlights the transfer mechanism within bio-based materials, prior to efficiency prediction for their industrial development. In dry conditions, all chitosan films were fairly good gas barriers (about 10 17 g/m∙s∙Pa). Chitosan coated polyethylene films were up to 10000 times less permeable than uncoated PE. Increase in the environmental humidity above 60% and up to 96% (that represents the conditions of a real fresh food packaging system), significantly increased gas permeability of all chitosan films. Mechanical tests confirmed that when relative humidity increased, structural changes were induced. Therefore, extensive water plasticization of chitosan matrix was observed.Diffusion coefficients of carvacrol from chitosan film increased up to 1000 times when humidity increased from 0% to 100%. Water vapour triggers the release of carvacrol in the vapour phase. This indicates the importance of controlling the environmental conditions in the packaging at the time of the application but also during the active film storage.Films with carvacrol concentrations in the vapour phase above 2x10-7 g/mLair were efficient against large spectrum of bacteria, including some Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. In some instances the concentration that was required for carvacrol antimicrobial efficiency was not organoleptically acceptable to consumers
