Abstract:
This thesis describes the fabrication of plastic microneedle devices, their fabrication by injection molding, and analysis of the penetration mechanics. Injection molding is an economical mass-production technique that may encourage widespread adoption of microneedles for drug delivery. Four polymers were injection molded into hexagonal and square patterns of between 91 and 100 needles per array. The patterns and geometries were chosen to study the effect of needle spacing and array design on penetration force. Two needle spacings of approximately 1 mm and 1.5 mm were employed for both patterns. Molded parts showed tip radii below 15 microns, heights of 600 to 750 microns, and an included angle of approximately 30 degrees. An economic analysis performed of the injection molded polymer devices showed that they can be manufactured for approximately $0.10 - $0.179 per part, which should be low enough to gain market acceptance. The added benefits of low pain perception, improved drug delivery for certain treatments, and the possibly of being recyclable make injection molded micro-needle devices a desirable alternative to silicon or metal microneedles. Penetration tests were performed with plastic micro-needle arrays and arrays of steel needles of the same spacings and patterns. Silicone rubber with mechanical properties similar to human skin was used as a skin simulant. The results showed that the micro-needles penetrated skin to depths between 120 and 185 microns depending on pattern, spacing, tip radius and needle length. This depth is sufficient to deliver drug therapies, but not so far that they stimulate the nerve endings present beyond 130 microns inside the dermis layer in human skin. An analytical model was developed to estimate the effects of various microneedle and skin characteristics on penetration force. The model was based on literature sources and derived from test results. The model accounted for coefficient of friction, tip radius, tip angle, and needle spacing, as well as the skin mimic's mechanical properties such as elastic modulus, mode I fracture toughness, and puncture fracture toughness. A Monte Carlo simulation technique was used to correct for errors in needle length and testing angle. Comparison of the experiments to the model showed good agreement.

Abstract:
Designing an injection molded plastic part requires optimizing the part with respect to various stakeholders’ needs throughout its life cycle. The conditions in which a product is operating in service are often inadequately understood or specified, resulting in wrong material selection, which in turn leads to failure when the product is used. Many aspects interrelate with the initial part design and the essential rules of each should be taken into account to ensure a well-functioning plastic product. Regardless, a part design often passes sequentially from concept development to the manufacturing phase with features that unnecessarily complicate production, add costs and weaken the intended embodiment of the product. Therefore, a checklist was developed to ensure that oversights do not happen and verify that a design fulfills the requirements set for it. The commissioning company in the project was the design office Sytyte Oy. The aim of this thesis work was to investigate the effects of design decisions on the product’s feasibility and performance in service. The study focused on the underlying reasons for failures in plastic products, failure phenomena and ways of preventing them. The project started with literature research. To support the theoretical review, a small-scale survey was conducted among operators in plastic industry in Finland to strengthen the outcome of the project. The findings from the research were compiled into a checklist. The approach into the list was adopted from the FMEA method aiming to create a stripped-down version of it. The result offers a tool for anticipating and spotting possible failures by bringing up the influences that most frequently affect the part performance. It contributes to preventing delays in processing and premature failures in service. The checklist was verified by specialist consultation to receive suggestions and requirements for improvements and to ensure its reliability.

Abstract:
In this study, the thermal and mechanical properties of poly(ethylenetheraphthalate) (PET)-thermotropic liquid crystal polyester (TLCP), mixtures and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-TLCP mixtures were studied. The curing of PMMA-TLCP mixtures was done by heat, gamma radiation and microwave. The amount of TLCP in mixtures was % 0.5, 2 and 5 TLCP by weight. TLCP was synthesized by melt-acidolysis system, and PET-TLCP mixtures were prepared by using lab scale batch mixer. PMMA samples were prepared according to denture manufacturer&rsquo
s procedure. The characterization of polymer samples and mixtures were carried by FT-IR, NMR, DSC, DMA, tensile, impact, three point bending tests and light microscopy. The mixing of TLCP with PMMA yielded heterogeneous dispersions. This was observed from light micrographs. The mechanical and rheological properties of all polymers were not positively affected by inclusion of TLCP. It is also worthwhile to note that weakening of PET-TLCP mixtures were due to the thermal degradation as the thermal age of the mixtures is much higher.

Froth floatation is an important process used in the mining industry for separating minerals from each other. The separation process is based on rendering a selected mineral hydrophobic using an appropriate hydrophobizing reagent (collector), so that it can selectively attach onto the surfaces of a rising stream of air bubbles. Thus, controlling the hydrophobicity of the minerals to be separated from each other is of critical importance in flotation. If one wishes to separate plastics from each other by flotation, however, it would be necessary to render a selected plastic hydrophilic and leave the others hydrophobic. In the present work, the possibility of separating common plastics from each other by flotation has been explored.

While water contact angle is the most widely used measure of the hydrophobicity of a solid, it does not give the information on the kinetics of flotation. Therefore, the forces acting between the surfaces coated with different hydrophobic polymers (or plastics) in water were measured using the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). The results obtained with polystyrene, polymethylmethacryrate (PMMA), polypropylene (PP), and Teflon showed the existence of long-range attractive forces (or hydrophobic force) that cannot be explained by the classical DLVO theory. The surface force measurements were conducted in pure water and in solutions of surfactant (alkyltrimethylammonium chloride) and a salt (NaCl). In pure water, the attractive forces were much stronger than van der Waals force. In the presence of the surfactant and NaCl, the long-range attraction decreased with increasing concentration and the alkyl chain length.

A series of contact angle measurements were conducted to determine the hydrophobicity of polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chlorite (PVC), and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) in the presence of different wetting agents (surfactants). The results show the possibility of separating plastics from each other by flotation, and a series of microflotation tests conducted on PS and PVC showed promising results.

Abstract:
Polymers in concrete have received considerable attention over the past 30 years. Superplasticizers are one of the admixtures which have polymeric structure. In this study, polycarboxylate type slump-releasing dispersant, which is a copolymer of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) and methacrylic acid (MAA), was synthesized in different feed compositions. The synthesis procedure of this copolymer was retrieved from literature. The derivatives of this water-soluble copolymer (AMPS-MAA) were synthesized by a macromonomer which was synthesized by the esterification of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (PEG) with MAA (PEGMA) and then copolymerizing this macromonomer with AMPS monomer, the resulting copolymer is AMPS-PEGMA. In order to study the methyl group effect on fluidity, the other type of macromonomer (PEGA), composed of PEG and acrylic acid (AA), was synthesized and copolymerized with AMPS monomer, giving AMPS-PEGA. The structures of synthesized polymers were verified by NMR and FT-IR analysis. The slump-releasing effect of the synthesized copolymers was studied in terms of reaction pH, composition, molecular weight, amount of PEG side chains, and molecular weight of PEG side chains. The AMPS-MAA copolymer with 40% AMPS content was the most effective in promoting the fluidity of cement pastes. In scope of reaction pH, the AMPS-MAA copolymer, synthesized at a pH of 11, gave the most effective result on fluidity of the cement pastes. In copolymers of PEG acrylate macromonomers and AMPS monomers, copolymers with 5% PEG acrylate content showed the highest fluidity both in copolymers of PEGA and PEGMA. In copolymers with PEG side chains, the 15% AMPS-PEGA copolymer synthesized at pH of 6 gave the most effective result on fluidity of cement pastes. In the study of mechanical properties of the mortar samples prepared by the copolymers selected, AMPS-PEGA copolymer with 25% PEG content showed the highest flexural strength, and AMPS-MAA copolymer with 60% AMPS content and a reaction pH of 11 gave the highest compressive strength. In this study, zeta potential measurements were also performed to analyze the fluidity behavior of the copolymers.

Abstract:
This thesis reports on the research undertaken to investigate the reduction of the environmental impacts of plastic packaging through the effective selection and application of biopolymers during the pack design process. The principle objective of this research is to develop an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of biopolymers as a packaging material and to develop a framework which enables biopolymers to be considered at each stage of the pack design process to enable their effective and appropriate selection and use.
