GREEN, GEORGE DAVID. "QUINODIMETHANE POLYMERS." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/183860.

Abstract:
Monomers and polymers containing the quinodimethane unit were synthesized. The infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and ultraviolet spectra of these materials were also reported. Oxidation of the enolate dianoion of α, α'-di(carbomethoxy)-α, α'-diphenylquinodimethane (DMPQH₂) with iodine gave 7,8-di(carbomethoxy)-7,8-diphenylguinodimethane (DMPQ) in greater than 50% yield. This compound had a reduction potential of -0.85V (Ag/AgCl reference) but would not form charge transfer complexes with electron donors. Attempted polymerization reactions of DMPQ were also discussed. A series of donor

A series of low band-gap conjugated polymers with intramolecular charge transfer properties were synthesized and bulk heterojunction devices based on these polymers were fabricated. The electrochemical and photophysical properties of the polymers were tuned by using different electron withdrawing molecules or ruthenium complexes as the comonomer. Preliminary results suggested that the electronic structures of the polymer were significantly altered by the incorporation of different acceptor units. The polymers also demonstrated intense absorption bands in the visible region, indicating

Aniline Black is perhaps the oldest known synthetic polymer. It has been studied since the mid 19ᵗʰ century, and is still a matter of interest. These interests arise from the fact that Aniline Black is inexpensive, yet has some very unusual and potentially useful electrical properties. The present approach has been a systematic study of Aniline Black related compounds. The model compounds were synthesized in a controlled fashion to dictate exact structure and purity. It is expected that the better the process of formation, the more uniform the structure, and hence a more usable material as an

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been compared to natural antibodies in that they can specifically bind target compounds in a similar way that antibodies specifically bind to an antigen. The attraction of the MIPs technology is the ease of creating binding elements which are relatively cheap compared with the process of isolating natural antibodies. In this research monoterpenes, such as α-terpineol, were chosen to be the model compounds for investigating the molecular imprinting of small, poorly functionalised organic compounds. In this study the development of an improved electrochemical fuel cell sensor for the detection of low-levels of formaldehyde vapour is described. Current fuel cell sensors used in the commercial Formaldemeter™ instrument lack sensitivity, respond to methanol, and show an interference response to humidity. For the detection and accurate determination of low-level concentrations of formaldehyde an improvement in these characteristics is essential. Two routes were investigated to achieve these requirements. Firstly the oxygen reduction reaction at the cathode was replaced with that of a conducti
